Job summary
The DNA replication group, Imperial College London, is looking to recruit a motivated and highly creative Research Associates interested in understanding how the eukaryotic replicative helicase promotes accurate DNA replication using biochemical approaches.
One of the most fundamental property of all living things is the ability to replicate their DNA, which allows cells to pass on their genetic material from parent to progeny. The Speck’s lab reconstituted eukaryotic replicative helicase loading with purified Saccharomyces cerevisiae proteins and identified the MCM2-7 double-hexamer as the template for replication fork assembly (Evrin et al PNAS 2009).
We are now in a strong position to address how the replicative helicase becomes activated for DNA synthesis.
The candidates will employ our well-established in vitro reconstituted system (Evrin et al PNAS 2009; Noguchi et al PNAS 2017) to study how the replicative helicase becomes activated during S-phase.
Duties and responsibilities
To generate reagents for the project
To design and carry out scientific experiments in accordance with the project
To maintain highly organised and accurate records of experimental work
To prepare material for presentation in oral and poster formats and present findings to colleagues and at conferences
To contribute to writing bids for research grants
To analyse, manage and communicate data, ensuring the validity and reliability of the data at all times
To draft publications and prepare them for submission to refereed journals
To submit publications to refereed journals
To actively contribute to the smooth running of the laboratory in co-ordination with other members of the group
To form a good working relationship with other members of the group and actively participate in team work
To promote the reputation of the group, Centre, the Department and the College
To develop contacts and research collaborations within the Centre, the College and the wider community
To supervise staff, as appropriate, and to provide guidance and occasional supervision to junior members of the laboratory, if requested
To actively participate in the group’s research meetings and academic activities organised by the Institute (including internal seminars, lectures, institute retreats and public-related activities)
Essential requirements
Research Associate: Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Epidemiology or medical statistics or a closely related discipline
Research Assistant: Near completion of a PhD (or equivalent) in Epidemiology or medical statistics or a closely related discipline
Epidemiology or medical statistics or a closely related discipline
Have excellent experience in protein biochemistry of replication factors, biochemical assays and the preparation of samples for cryo-EM analysis
At least one first-author publication in an internationally recognised peer-reviewed journal (published)
Strong experience in preparing samples for cryo-EM
Strong experience in protein expression, purification of replication factors
Solid knowledge in working with purified proteins

This post is based at the Hammersmith Campus in London for a period of 6 months.
Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,045 – £39,183 per annum
