Dr. Luke Thominet, an Assistant Professor at Florida International University, is conducting a research study of academic job rejection letters. The goals of the study are to explore how current trends in letter construction relate to letter recipients’ reactions and to best practices. The results of the study might help academic departments construct more effective rejection letters. In doing so, this study seeks to contribute to a more humane job market in academia.

We need participants to complete a brief online survey. If you are an academic job seeker who has been on the market at any point during the last five years and have received a rejection letter from at least one school, please consider completing the survey at the following link:

The survey will take approximately five minutes to complete. All answers will remain anonymous and you will be asked to anonymize any information you submit.

Is there a way to organize the wiki this year by different area? Of course, a job could fall under more than one area, but it would nice to have it organized that way. I have heard from many people that it makes it hard to search for jobs and also to see what has been updated. 

Can a great resume save you from a bad interview?

If you are applying for a job, and you don't want your current employer to know about it, and the job you are applying for says "may we contact your current employer"... how should you answer?

Hey folks, I"m applying for a job this season (one of the sparse ones I could be a candidate for). The dept. site is a desert. Faculty profiles only have an email address and sometimes a photo. The page itself doesn't list any type of student activities, department activities, or any signs of the culture of the place (though, I suppose what I'm seeing may very well be the culture). This makes it pretty tough to tailor the letter beyond what the ad asks for (teaching enthusiast, energetic etc). It's a mid sized state school part of a larger state university system. Any tips on what location-specific touches to add? 

1. Are there any guides on how to dress for academic job interviews for men? 

2. Should i bring a briefcase? Or do most people not bring their laptop?
