California University of Pennsylvania - TT Faculty, post-1865 American Lit.
The English Department at California University of Pennsylvania seeks a specialist in American literature, post-1865, to teach upper- and lower-division literature courses and first-year composition. Teaching load is 4/4 and will include an early American literature survey, in addition to courses in the area of specialization.
RANK & SALARY: This is a tenure-track faculty appointment. Salary is competitive and commensurate with academic preparation and experience. An excellent fringe benefits package is included.
THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT must be capable of and committed to effective teaching and fulfillment of professional responsibilities, continuing scholarly growth, and service contribution to the University and communities. Also, the successful applicant will have experience working with diverse populations.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES include involvement with departmental, college-wide, and university committees. Also, in accordance with the terms of the collective bargaining agreement between the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education and APSCUF, the successful applicant might be assigned to perform work at off-campus sites, in the evening/weekend college and/or provide instruction through online and/or other distance education methods.
Applicants must have demonstrated ability to teach post-1865 American literature in depth, and have secondary preparation in early American literature, with preference given to candidates with a special interest in the novel. Candidates must show evidence of a research agenda in area of specialization, as well as experience teaching first-year composition.

The Department seeks an outstanding scholar of contemporary (post-1945) literature and culture to join a dynamic team of specialists in developing the Department’s profile of research and teaching in this area.
The successful candidate will have an outstanding record of research and publication for career stage and show exceptional promise as a leading scholar in the field of contemporary British, American and/or Anglophone literature. S/he will be expected to engage in and develop research projects in literature and culture of the late 20th- and 21st-century; to develop interdisciplinary academic networks; to secure research funding and to develop the impact of research; and to attract and supervise PhD candidates. The candidate will contribute to the development of the department’s new MA in Contemporary Literature, Culture and Theory (to begin in 2013-2014) and design and deliver teaching for undergraduate and other postgraduate taught programmes (particularly the MA in English 1850 to the Present). I know someone there who says that the English department is quite dysfunctional and that there's a VAP who's a favored inside candidate. I got curious and made inquiries because I saw that there's someone there in this position who is NOT the VAP but who must be leaving.
OP here -- awesome how more info in academia can make things less readable. . . thanks, though. I have a better writing sample this year, so I suppose I'll pay my $6 & apply, current VAP or not, dysfunction or not. It seems like a potentially very decent job, depending on dept'l dynamics.

- Yes, I have that question as well. It would seem that the letters are the next stage because they did not ask for them initially. It's not clear.
- My impression is that it is not a request for more materials, but rather an automated completion of the application packet. I've asked several people who applied, and all either got interfolio requestions or had their status on the UPenn site change to "recommendations requested" (meaning emails had been sent to their recommenders).

The Department of English at Washington State University seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English at its Tri-Cities campus with a research specialty in nineteenth- and/or twentieth-century American literature and the ability to teach transnational literature across both periods. The successful candidate will teach lower- and upper-division undergraduate courses in nineteenth- and twentieth-century literature at the Tri-Cities campus while also having the opportunity to teach specialized graduate courses to Pullman campus students. In each case the department maintains a strong commitment to interdisciplinary, transcultural curricula in literary studies. Teaching may also include undergraduate courses in world and comparative literature, cultural studies, humanities, and other areas of interest. Service on M.A. and Ph.D. committees, including the directing of dissertations, is expected. Strong candidates will show evidence of excellent scholarly potential; demonstrate the ability to teach successfully at the college level, work in diverse, multi-cultural communities, and contribute to the goals and growth of the department.
The Department of English combines a strong research orientation with a commitment to high-quality instruction. The graduate program in Pullman offers M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in English and American literature and Rhetoric and Composition. Faculty teach a standard 2/2 course load, but new faculty are eligible for reduced teaching loads prior to tenure review to develop their research programs. They gave people two weeks to submit additional materials, so those people who submitted right at the deadline (11/1) and then received a request for more material may not have submitted their writing samples/teaching portfolios until 11/14 or so. I'd imagine the committee won't be contacting people about interviews until at least early December.
