The Department of English at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in American Literature (1945-present) and Southern Literature at the rank of assistant professor to start July 31, 2015, pending final administrative and budgetary approval. We seek a faculty member committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and academic service. The successful candidate will maintain an active research program and teach a 3/3 load including sophomore American Literature surveys, upper-division courses in American Literature for majors, and specialized graduate seminars.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in English, or closely related field, and evidence of successful teaching are required. Evidence of scholarly publication or activity is desirable. We especially welcome candidates with auxiliary interests in one or more of the following areas: film, theory, digital humanities, disability studies, and ecocriticism.

Modern American Poetry, tenure-track assistant professor to begin Fall 2015. The Department of English seeks a dynamic scholar to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses. Primary expertise should be in modern American poetry, but the successful candidate should be conversant in more than one genre, with the preferred secondary genre being drama. Smith College (MA) - TT Asst. Professor of English and the Study of Women and Gender - CAMPUS INTERVIEWS SCHEDULED[]

The Program for the Study of Women and Gender (SWG) and the Department of English Language & Literature at Smith College invite applications for an equally shared joint tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, starting Fall 2015. We seek a scholar working at the intersection of questions of race, gender, and sexuality in literary and/or visual texts in the contemporary U.S.

We are particularly interested in candidates whose work does not replicate the College's current strengths in African American literature; comparative work is welcome. Successful candidates will demonstrate command of key methodological and theoretical perspectives in both gender studies and literary studies. Desirable additional fields or areas of strength include film and visual culture, critical race theory, drama and performance. We expect the successful candidate to have excellent preparation in literary texts from the twentieth century (and after), and must have prior interdisciplinary graduate training and teaching experience in women and gender studies. A Ph.D. in a relevant field is required by the time of appointment.

The new hire would teach two courses each year in SWG (http://www.smith.edu/swg/) and two in English (http://www.smith.edu/english/). Both programs offer considerable freedom in curricular design. In SWG s/he must be prepared to teach SWG 150, the major's interdisciplinary, team-taught introductory course. In English, s/he would teach a balance of introductory, intermediate, and advanced seminar level courses.

Description of Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for teaching the core courses in the English major, College Writing, and advanced courses that focus on national and global literatures. Additional responsibilities include advisement of students in the major and department and university service.

Required Qualifications: Ph.D. degree by time of appointment. The candidates' primary area of specialization must be in Latino literary and cultural studies with a dual emphasis in 20th century-contemporary American (U.S.) literature. Candidates must be dedicated to helping students from diverse backgrounds succeed in a multicultural and global community. Additionally, the candidate will likely be versed in critical race theory, LatCrit, border studies, and/or hemispheric studies.   • A: Yes, that's my understanding. It's not so onerous, though, when you consider the fact that the instructions tell us that we can have the recs mailed to him, too. That saves a few bucks since mailing all of the materials (letter, CV, recs) is considerably cheaper than having Interfolio upload the recs to the job site--especially if you have more than three to send. 
  • FWIW, the ad only mentions CV and a Cover Letter. "Please submit a letter of application and a current curriculum vitae to Professor Wyman H. Herendeen, Chair, Department of English, University of Houston, Houston, Texas 77204-3013." Even easier and cheaper. 
  • The application instructions on the job site ask us to "note that the three letters of recommendation may be sent to Wyman H. We are also interested in applicants whose research practice and pedagogy promise to connect with the College’s fine art, design, and architecture students/faculty. Interdisciplinary experience is a plus, and genres could include fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry, as well as hybrid and experimental writing.

We seek a candidate with a global perspective, who has the potential to teach 200-level electives and 300-level seminars in her or his area of expertise, which may include introductory and advanced literature and creative writing courses. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A PhD in literature (or an equivalent field) or MFA in Creative Writing; a minimum of three years’ postdoctoral/post-MFA teaching experience; significant critical, scholarly publications, and/or translations; at least one book of literary scholarship, plus significant creative writing publications in nationally recognized venues. Minimum of two books of creative work are required for an Associate level appointment.

The successful candidate will join a department with a curricular commitment to teaching the mutuality of the study of literature and the practice of creative expression, and should demonstrate active and ongoing participation in professional/ scholarly/ creative work (through a record of presentations, workshops, publications, conferences, etc.). Leadership ability, evidence of administrative ability, graduate teaching experience, and commitment to collaboration are highly desirable. Associate level hire will be offered an accelerated negotiable path to tenure.
