    • The H-Net job ad is currently set to expire Jan 5, but the position is open until filled. The committee hopes to start reviewing applications at the beginning of spring semester, in late January. For various reasons, especially its federal budget appropriation, Gallaudet is not able to work on the standard history hiring calendar and searches move forward after winter break and usually are not completed until near the end of the semester. The position is contingent upon funding, though that is not uncommon.

Indiana University Kokomo- Ancient/Medieval Mediterranean/Middle East[]

    • Haven't heard a thing. Perhaps at this point faculty just want to be done with the semester, grading etc. So maybe word either way will come between mid-December and Christmas. Somebody noted this below (under Northwestern) and it makes sense. I just don't see how not a single person has communicated about so many schools that didn't have ASA interviews. (12/4)

      • Those are always tricky especially if one decides to be honest. I guess it comes down to whether or not to apply in the first place...
      • In these situations I think honesty is the only avenue to take, because if one is dishonest when asked about their religious beliefs, it will only turn out bad for you and the institution--no one wins. Even if you got the job you would have to hide your true thoughts from your colleagues for years, and if it does come out, then they may be upset with you for lying in the first place and may be less able to trust you in the future because you have been dishonest for however many months/years. This will only sow discord in the department and work place. I know we are all desperate to get any academic job and stay in the game, but my two cents is that it is lose/lose if you're not going to fully disclose your beliefs when asked. As historians we always talk about conducting our research with integrity, why wouldn't we extend that to other areas of our profession? Even the AHA Statement on Standards argues that "trust and respect both of one’s peers and of the public at large are among the greatest and most hard-won achievements that any historian can attain." I think you gotta be honest in stating your views and then see how the institution responds. [Note: I am not a Baylor search committee member, but just a job-seeker who found the above post problematic]

        • Thanks for the update and congratulations to your colleague. That is quite an acheivement. However, being an African historian of Africa, I can't imagine the logistical nightmare that would be preparing for an ASA interview on such short notice e.g. the complications of getting a visa etc. They might have to conduct a Skype interview..

          • Hey guys, a little help here. What is a pre-interview?
          • A "pre-interview" is when an ABD candidate telephones a department to speak to the SCC to check that their application is complete. The "pre-interview" usually goes "incredibly well" with the ABD candidate expected to progress to an actual interview.
          • I had neither an interview nor a "pre-interview," but was asked a couple weeks ago to submit scholarship and informed that finalists will be chosen early next year. Hope this helps. 12/6 (x3)
            • Thank you for this update. Finally some information that sounds credible after weeks of speculation ("pre-interviewees" etc.) It makes sense that they'd ask for written samples first because none were requested in the job ad.

                • It seems the person above (claiming the offer went to the Assistant Prof. with a recent book on slavery) has confused the African History search with the Luso-Brazilian Studies search, which resulted in an offer to someone who fits the above description. Please check your info before you post on this thread.

      • We write to inform you about the search for a tenure-track historian in the Department of Africana Studies and the Department of History at Brown University. The search has now concluded. We thank you for your interest in the position and for taking the effort to apply. We were struck at how rich the field was and regretted that we were not able to pursue the candidacies of so many qualified people. We wish you the best in your professional endeavors.
  • Why does this happen? I think I heard the Northwestern search failed too.
    • Four potential reasons come to my mind:
      • a) The search committee is unable to come to a consensus on which candidate to hire.
      • b) The higher administration disagrees with the search committee on which candidate to hire.
      • c) The higher administration decides to reprioritize the funding line and do something else with the money.
      • d) Budget cuts cause the funding line to be cancelled outright or put into hibernation.
      • I've seen c and d take place and heard of incidents of a and b. Any of these outcomes is embarrassing to the search committee and they are usually not discussed  publicly (though d, not being the department's fault, is an exception). Another thing that sometimes happens is that a candidate is hired and is unable to assume the position (e.g., accepts another position & breaks contract, has a medical emergency and retires/quits, etc.).
  • Look, there are many ways to apologist ways to explain failed searches at major institutions (let's keep in mind that we are talking about Brown and Northwestern), but the bottom line is that a failed search is a sign of serious dysfunction. Brown's failed search may be "innocent" enough (ie able to be blamed on factors beyond the control of the committee/hiring departments), but Northwestern has failed several times to fill this SAME position. It is very difficult to believe that not a SINGLE candidate is good enough...
  • I'm happy someone can admit this. It's so obvious that it is pure dysfunction. You can see this at work at conferences, symposia, etc. Historians and search committees just unable to function normally and make rational decisions.
  • Searches are complicated and they don't always result in a hire. That doesn't mean excellent people did not apply or that no one was "good," it just means institutions have to meet their own needs first and that's sometimes more complicated than it appears from the outside. It's easy to throw around slurs against committees and institutions and call them dysfunctional, but the realities are usually more interesting and less insidious. 
  • ha, complicating the inner workings of power is so very interesting...how nuanced.

    • There is certainly no harm in trying. However, it is of course best to meet deadlines. You never know what happens to apps in a department after the deadline. Perhaps, staff in charge would add yours to the pile; perhaps they end up in the trash; perhaps they end up in a separate pile to be looked at if they don't get enough apps to shortlist from those who submitted on time (difficult to imagine such a situation) etc . I think what the above poster meant was that some schools may have simply decided not to look at the apps until they are ready to e.g. after Thanksgiving or the end of the quarter especially if the intention is to conduct AHA or Skype interviews for the first round.     • [not a direct answer, but: the UK/EU job market (usually) works quite differently to the US market, partly because we don't have tenure-track. An ABD is unlikely to be hirable into a UK lectureship - it does happen, but it's rare and controversial (and the same applies to very recent UK/EU graduates too). The UK is also at a crucial point in the REF process (explained on this talk page) which means that hires will be focusing on publications (book probably essential), research reputation, and proven ability to get large-scale grants. Oh, and have to master distance learning technologies...

  • I'm afraid that the first commenter has either badly misread the job ad or has no real idea how the profession works. It's possible the commenter thought the ad was implying that one would have to teach all of these courses in a single semester, which would be a higher teaching load. However, the ad says nothing about what the teaching load actually is, and a quick search of the course catalog reveals most faculty to be teaching two courses this Spring, plus independent studies and graduate student supervision. Not really an insane demand, so much as on the generous R1 side of things. If the poster's concern is really with diversity of classes taught, then good luck to them.
