The successful candidate for the position will be an interdisciplinary scholar of the Caribbean with the ability to teach courses rooted in other regions of the African Diaspora. United States Air Force Academy (CO) - Assistant Professor of English (American minority literatures, incl. African American)[]
The Department of English and Fine Arts anticipates hiring an Assistant Professor in American minority literatures (e.g. Native, Latina/o, Asian, African, and/or American ethnic) and/or modern drama beginning June 27, 2016. Diasporic/hemispheric approaches and interdisciplinary studies are especially welcome. We will privilege candidates with an excellent teaching record and an active research profile grounded in a strong theoretical framework. The successful candidate will teach a variety of courses at all undergraduate levels, including first-year composition, general literature surveys, and special topics courses for English majors, and will fulfill associated duties to the department, faculty, and student body. Funding is provided for research and scholarship opportunities as available. The initial appointment will be for three years. Successive reappointments of up to four years in length will be based upon an assessment of performance, Air Force and departmental needs, and funding availability.
Applicants will be assessed based on teaching credentials, scholarship, service, and education. A Ph.D. in English, Comparative Literature, and/or multi-cultural/ethnic studies disciplines and/or modern drama with demonstrated expertise in the specified fields by the time of the appointment is required. About the College/Department: The J. The position entails conducting research leading to publication, designing graduate and undergraduate courses, providing curriculum material, constructing syllabi, leading classroom instruction, writing and administering exams, coaching students in the writing of essays, mentoring and evaluating students, serving on various faculty- and student-oriented committees, and participating in the faculty decision-making of the English Department and the Program in African and African American Studies.
Teaching will consist of four courses per year, on a semester system: two graduate and/or undergraduate courses in the Department of English and two courses in the Program of African and African American Studies. Service will be both in English and in AAST , though an effort will be made to keep total service no more than is normal for English Department faculty who are not jointly appointed. Ongoing research and publication are required. Job performance will be evaluated jointly by the Chair of the Department of English and the Chair of African-American Studies; tenure and promotion will be in the Department of English.
Regular, reliable and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

The English program at Westminster College is in the process of revising its major to focus on ways of thinking, reading, and writing rather than traditional categories of literary historical period and national culture. Our new curriculum favors comparative, transnational, and transhistorical approaches as well as the study of media in all their forms. In addition to literary studies, the program offers a concentration in creative writing and ample opportunities for students to engage with contemporary writers. Each year the Anne Newman Sutton Weeks Poetry series features several readings by nationally known poets, one of whom teaches in residence for a semester. Published since 1965, ellipsis is a student-edited literary journal that features work by emerging and well-known writers from across the country.
Current English faculty specialize in medieval and Renaissance literature, early nineteenth century and environmental literature, Latino and other U.S. minority literature, South Asian literature, film studies, composition pedagogy, poetry, and fiction. We seek a colleague who can complement our strengths by offering additional courses on diverse authors and media. In our teaching, we maintain Westminster College’s commitment to inclusive, supportive, and engaged student learning.

- I think Williams was pretty good on this search. rejection a few days after they said they'd get to it, and while it's true that they have at least one postdoc that fits this search, it seems that it's quite a standard practice these days among SLACs to get a postdoc and run a search the next year. And the postdocs still have to go through the whole proces, which means lots of competition from super qualified candidates. I guess on the one hand it's an enviable position, but on the other I can't imagine that it's any less terrible for them than it is for the rest of us.

The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) seeks a dynamic scholar and leader for the position of Director of African American Studies. Founded more than twenty years ago, African American Studies at UTEP offers a rich mix of programming linking students, faculty, staff and members of the community in the El Paso border region and beyond. This context provides exciting opportunities to explore the intersections of African American and Latina/o experiences and draw on UTEP’s important civil rights history.
The Director of African American Studies is a member of the UTEP College of Liberal Arts Chairs’ Council and has responsibility for leadership of the academic program and research activities associated with African American Studies. The Director generally teaches one course each semester and could also participate in UTEP PhD programs related to their scholarly and research interests. With staff assistance, the Director serves as an advisor for the UTEP Black Student Union and a mentor for many students enrolled in programs throughout the University. The Director works with the UTEP Black Alumni Network (UBAN) and with community partners to build support for African American Studies and address relevant social issues at UTEP and in the El Paso community. The Director and staff, working in collaboration with UTEP students, affiliated faculty, campus organizations and other University and community officials, sponsor a variety of events and activities throughout the year, including Black History Month programs, and initiate new avenues of engagement and outreach.
Required Qualifications: Candidates should have a Ph.D. in African American Studies or a related academic disciplinary area, and possess a strong record of scholarship commensurate with an appointment as Professor or Associate Professor with Tenure in an appropriate UTEP academic department or program. Demonstrable experience in serving in an administrative role, engaging in community outreach, and initiating and expanding a new program is highly desirable.
