Bilkent University (TURKEY) - Assistant Professor - American Culture and Literature[]
The Department of American Culture and Literature at Bilkent University invites applications for a faculty position on the Assistant Professor level beginning in fall semester 2019 (September 2019). Applications are invited from candidates with primary fields in American Studies, American literature, American history, film studies, art history, theatre and drama, cultural studies, gender studies, genres of American music, the anthropology of American cultures, the sociology of popular culture in the U.S., and critical theory. The regular course load is 3/3, but new faculty may be granted a course load reduction during their first two years of teaching. Applicants should be able to teach one or more of our first and second year courses—Introduction to American Studies, Methods and Texts, American Texts and Contexts, and the Survey of U.S. History—as well as courses pertinent to the applicant’s specialty within the range of third and fourth year courses that we offer. We would prefer applicants who can work within interdisciplinary contexts; we are open to considering candidates with various fields and periods of specialization. Experience in teaching content-based English writing skills would be highly desirable.

Georgetown University in Qatar invites applications for an Assistant Professor in the field of American literature, or Comparative literature with a focus on the United States, for a core faculty position at GU-Q. Core faculty positions are full-time positions designed to replicate the institutional commitment to academic freedom and professional opportunities associated with tenure-track appointments. Candidates must have a terminal degree and be a strong generalist able to teach introductory and advanced literature courses in post- 1865 American Literature, including our survey for English majors. Subfield within American literature is open, but the successful candidate should teach the wide diversity of American literature. The department welcomes secondary interests in transnational or hemispheric approaches to American literature, digital humanities, and/or interdisciplinary teaching. The successful candidate will also be able to teach classes in the Civitae Core Curriculum, including freshman writing courses devoted to research and rhetoric and literature courses designed for non-majors. Preferred Qualifications: Specialization in writers of color, in particular African American and/or Latinx literature; Scholarly interest and/or expertise in media studies; Experience teaching both literature and college-level writing courses in a variety of formats (ex. in-person, online, hybrid, etc.); Experience teaching students who are First Generation and/or non-traditional college students.
Rank, Salary & Benefits: Tenure-track, Assistant Professor level. Budget annual salary is $55,000 (for a 9-month contract). The Goodrich Scholarship Program (the Nebraska State-funded program founded in 1972 by the Nebraska State legislature) is an academic unit of the College of Public Affairs and Community Service at the University of Nebraska, Omaha. Annually, the program offers full-tuition and general fees scholarship to incoming college students who demonstrate high academic potential and high financial need, who are Nebraska residents, and who enroll at the University of Nebraska, Omaha; the 2018 cohort consists of 60 students (aka scholars). The program has produced over 1,900 graduates. Many Goodrich scholars are first-gen college students and PELL grant recipients. We are seeking a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of English (with an already earned PhD in English from an accredited school) to teach certain required courses in the Goodrich freshman sequence, which includes English Composition, Autobiographical Reading and Writing, and Perspectives on US American Culture (a 6-credit hour course offered in the spring semester). The successful teacher-scholar candidate must have demonstrated excellence in teaching (with at least two years of experience teaching lower-level undergraduate classes) and must have demonstrated a potential for excellence in research and service. The university’s official faculty workload consists of 12 hours every semester. A research-active/productive faculty usually has a 3-credit course release which means a teaching load of 9 credit hours (usually 3 courses) and a research load of 3 credit hours every semester. Every semester, a research-active/productive Goodrich faculty teaches 2 classes (6 hours) in Goodrich and a third class (3 credit hours), usually a graduate or undergraduate course (in another department or unit) open to all UNO students. Qualifications:
- Earned graduate degree in English. MA required; PhD preferred. Course curriculum includes Freshman English Composition. Specialization and/or qualification to teach courses in American Literature required. Qualification to teach courses in Technical Writing preferred.
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to work with a diverse community of students and professionals.
- Demonstrated willingness and ability to act ethically and in a socially responsible manner.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare lectures and assignments, and teach assigned classes maintaining curricular integrity and coherence.
- Other related administrative responsibilities as assigned.
