American University - Beirut - Assistant Professor of American Studies - CAMPUS VISIT SCHEDULED
The Center for American Studies and Research (CASAR) at the American University of Beirut is seeking to appoint an Americanist from any social science discipline or humanities discipline, starting September 1, 2013 at the rank of Assistant Professor.
We are particularly interested in a scholar whose research and interests engage the fields of transnational American Studies and can contribute to the Center’s new MA program in Transnational American Studies, in addition to an existing minor program in American Studies. We hope to attract a candidate who can teach “Introduction to American Studies” at the undergraduate level and courses related to transnational American Studies at the graduate level.
The appointment is for an initial period of four years. The salary is competitive but depends upon qualifications. The usual teaching load is not more than 15 credits per year. The language of instruction is English. The hire will have joint appointment with a department in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will demonstrate research promise and accomplishments appropriate to rank, and be prepared to teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. We seek an Americanist with a specialty in popular culture and gender/sexuality. The position carries a five-course load. Evidence of teaching excellence and a Ph. The program offers degrees at the M.A. and Ph.D. level and includes a new, fast-growing undergraduate major. A Ph.D. in American Studies or field appropriate to the position is required. We aim to hire a promising scholar-teacher who will push the intellectual boundaries of our rich and diverse discipline and who appreciates the transformative potential of digital technologies for his/her own research and teaching agenda. Our new colleague will embrace the role digital technologies can play in expanding the audience for American Studies scholarship and in engaging a wider public. Our new colleague will also contribute to the broader Carolina Digital Humanities Initiative. Supported by a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the CDHI is designed to offer an adaptable and sustainable model of transformative academic practice for the 21st century, which embraces research, teaching, engaged scholarship, and the dissemination of knowledge in the humanities. One of three new digital humanities hires in the College of Arts and Sciences anticipated over the next four years, he/she will contribute to and help shape the direction of the Digital Innovation Lab. The position carries a $50,000 start-up fund with the expectation that the candidate arrive on campus prepared to pursue a robust and innovative digital research agenda.
