*I'm actually going to disagree: as someone who has been on the market for the past two years, the hybrid, super-deluxe research-teaching-syllabi-statement seems to be an increasingly popular genre. Plus, this is a liberal arts school where the teaching is taken VERY seriously. If you've got a good sample syllabus, use it. If not, don't sweat it, but IMO, don't EVER expect a job call to be rational or reasonable.

The successful candidates will teach in the bachelor and master degree programs in the Department of American Studies and carry out research within the Groningen Research Institute for the Study of Culture (ICOG). Teaching and service will comprise 60% of the full time position, research 40%. The appointees will be employed in the teaching and research group American Culture and Cultural Theory or American Political Culture and Political Theory.

American Studies at the University of Groningen is the only department of its kind in the Netherlands to offer a fully self-contained, interdisciplinary bachelor's degree program (three years) and a specialized master's degree program (one year). Both programs are fully taught in English. The majority of students spend a semester at one of the thirteen US universities with which the program has long-established student-exchange relations.

The core curriculum in the BA program is organized around three interdisciplinary course tracks that span the three curricular years: The Americas, Theories of Culture and Rhetoric and Composition. The majority of the interdisciplinary course modules are team-taught by faculty that typically operate in at least two course tracks.

The department currently has a total enrollment of approximately 350 students. American Studies PhD students carry out their work within the Graduate School of Arts and Humanities. Both the BA and MA programs were awarded renewed accreditation with distinction for organization, coherence and academic content in the most recent national peer review (TAE). The aim of the program is to retain its strong international position and to strengthen its position in Europe and beyond by attracting more highly qualified international students to the MA. The department is currently working out plans for the introduction of a two-year international MA degree program in "Culture, Politics, Ethics" in collaboration with one or more partners in North America.

Research at ICOG is characterized by an interdisciplinary approach. It represents many periods and disciplines, ranging from (art)history and theory of literature to media studies and from performing arts to international relations.

*Familiarity in teaching successful intensive workshops
*Ability to teach complex material in a way that is accessible to a broad audience
*Experience teaching complex global issues of political economy



Highly desirable attributes include familiarity with the epistemological problematic inherent in computerized expert systems and the impact on worker control, workplace power and skill, labor process studies, complex organizational analysis, the philosophy of science generally, and the social aspects of technological design and implementation.

Research areas include the political economy of healthcare restructuring and the clinical and technological impacts of healthcare restructuring on both patients and the Registered Nurses who provide their care.

The ideal Researcher Candidate will have the following qualities:

*Strong quantitative ability highly desirable
*Experience in power structure research
*Familiarity with corporate research and/or corporate campaigns
*Strategic research skills
*An understanding of market concentration and complex organizational issues
*Background in evaluating and reviewing corporate statements
