Full-Time / Tenure-Track Positions

Arizona State University, Barrett Honors College  - Lecturer (Renewable)

The Barrett Honors College of Arizona State University is expanding its faculty and invites applications for a position in the core Honors faculty. The faculty members of Barrett are non-tenure track Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, and Principal Lecturers; most are on three-year renewable and rolling appointments. The main teaching responsibility rests on a two-semester interdisciplinary seminar course, The Human Eventin which students examine important ideas from earliest writings to the present. Special attention is given to critical thinking and argumentative writing skills. In addition, faculty members teach upper-division seminars, and mentor honors students throughout their four years in independent studies, individual conferences, theses, and other forms of scholarly achievement.

Barrett attracts many of the top students in the country and provides them with an enriched academic experience that challenges them and enables them to become better citizens. The typical Barrett freshman is in the top five percent of his or her high school class, has SAT scores of 1320 or above, and has a high school grade-point average of 3.81.

We seek to fill a full-time, multi-year faculty position whose primary responsibility will be to teach the first-year Human Event seminar. Successful applicants will demonstrate experience in and openness to teaching primary sources through multiple theoretical/disciplinary/methodological approaches, across different cultures and historical eras. The position begins August 2014; the nine-month salary will be based on education and experience.

  • Qualifications: A PhD in any field of the humanities, natural or social sciences that complements the academic focus of the existing faculty members. Candidates whose work integrates views from multiple areas of the natural sciences, the social sciences, and/or the humanities are encouraged to apply. Experience in teaching argumentative writing skills is required, and experience leading seminar-based discussions is highly desired.
  • Application: Please send: (1) a letter of application detailing teaching philosophy and experience, disciplinary training and research, and how you can contribute to honors education; (2) a C.V.; (3) a brief description of course objectives and themes you would adopt in The Human Event, and a list of readings for the first and second semesters; (4) two letters of recommendation that address the extent and quality of your teaching. Sample syllabi for this course can be found under faculty profiles on the college website. Send your application materials, which should be formatted as PDF files, to: bhcfacultysearch@asu.edu. Questions about the position may be addressed to: Dr. Joseph P. Foy, Chair, Faculty Search Committee, at bhcfacultysearch@asu.eduReview of applications will begin on March 3, 2014.

NOTES:

  • Very careful about following established CSU "rules" - which are pretty normal - about the process.
  • Any chance this is an inside hire? They have a lot of lecturers one of whom probably fits the description. Not an accusation, just a question.
  • A number of these "Lecturers" seem to be current or former M.A. students at Cal State Fullerton. There is a Ph.D. candidate that is currently a lecturer there that has a career in film. He seems qualified. But again, who knows. The speculation probably isn't worth it.
  • Anyone heard anything yet? (10/7)
  • Someone reported a phone interview above
  • I've been told they haven't really gotten to the phone call stage - which seems to contradict the above comment. Anyone heard anything else? I freely admit, my contact at Fullerton might not know as much as she thinks she does so I thought I'd check here.
    • FWIW, 2 more interviews have been marked above by different users (10/21)
  • Anyone else who phone interviewed heard anything yet? At this point I'm guessing I'm out, but it would be nice to have a little more certainty. (11/15)
  • Campus interview noted above [11/15}
  • Looks like they have scheduled five campus visits. So, if you haven't been contacted, seems like you are out (myself included) unless some are placeholders for those interviewed at ASA. Scroll down a little and there is a notice about talks on the left side - https://www.facebook.com/CSUFassa

NOTES:

What are people submitting to this one? The application instructions seem to indicate a research/teaching statement at one point, and teaching philosophy/sample syllabi at another....

  • My suspicion is that "Sample Syllabi" is a standard category for that particular kind of HR submission portal and not something the committee specifically has in mind. I'd go with what's in the job ad, not the labels on the application.
  • I'm actually going to disagree: as someone who has been on the market for the past two years, the hybrid, super-deluxe research-teaching-syllabi-statement seems to be an increasingly popular genre. Plus, this is a liberal arts school where the teaching is taken VERY seriously. If you've got a good sample syllabus, use it. If not, don't sweat it, but IMO, don't EVER expect a job call to be rational or reasonable.

Will this be an inside hire?  There's a qualified VAP in the position right now.

  • I guess it is a possibility. Although, the current VAP doesn't seem to fulfill the focus on digital/media studies in the job call... Apply and see what happens.
  • the current VAP is also an alum on Skidmore
  • it looks the the current VAP is in the first of a three year gig.

NOTES:

Question--are unofficial transcripts, downloaded from my university's online student record system, acceptable? I'm assuming so since the online application system only accepts uploaded documents.

  • I figured the same thing and submitted unofficial ones with a note in my letter that I would be happy to provide official transcripts at their request.

Are anyone else's recommenders irritated about all the "ridiculous" details that they are apparently required to fill out to submit the online recommendation form? Mine are.   x2, nothing but trouble with their PeopleAdmin system.

Any news on this search?  Thought they would move quickly to a first round of interviews.

  • No news here
  • CONFUSED: Am I reading the above right that this job closed on Nov. 12th and they did interviews, campus visits, and have already had someone accept in less than a month from the closing of the job posting?  If so...congrats...but just checking to be sure.
  • No, you are not reading correctly. That is just the format for each job on this page. People are supposed to fill in dates whenever these events actually happen. As others have noted, none of these things seem to have occurred yet. Hope this clarifies things for you. [12/9]

Did anyone apply to this? I applied and gave the Interfolio contact for my letters of rec and already had them requested by the university. Just wondering if this is standard or not since the request occured a couple weeks after I applied.

Hi, guys. I heard from a very reputable source (at Davis, in another dept) that this job is earmarked for a VAP. I'm still going to apply, but if you're on the fence about it, maybe don't bother? Just FYI.  Good luck to all.

Hi folks. The description seems pretty transparently tailored to a visiting fellow. I was mid-application process and it only took a bit of research to notice. Stopped applying immediately.

Any news? Has the VAP been tapped for the job? (3/10)

University of Groningen - Assistant Professors in American Studies - CAMPUS INTERVIEWS HELD

The successful candidates will teach in the bachelor and master degree programs in the Department of American Studies and carry out research within the Groningen Research Institute for the Study of Culture (ICOG). Teaching and service will comprise 60% of the full time position, research 40%. The appointees will be employed in the teaching and research group American Culture and Cultural Theory or American Political Culture and Political Theory.

American Studies at the University of Groningen is the only department of its kind in the Netherlands to offer a fully self-contained, interdisciplinary bachelor's degree program (three years) and a specialized master's degree program (one year). Both programs are fully taught in English. The majority of students spend a semester at one of the thirteen US universities with which the program has long-established student-exchange relations.

The core curriculum in the BA program is organized around three interdisciplinary course tracks that span the three curricular years: The Americas, Theories of Culture and Rhetoric and Composition. The majority of the interdisciplinary course modules are team-taught by faculty that typically operate in at least two course tracks.

The department currently has a total enrollment of approximately 350 students. American Studies PhD students carry out their work within the Graduate School of Arts and Humanities. There are thirteen faculty members, most of whom have international degrees and extensive teaching experience. Both the BA and MA programs were awarded renewed accreditation with distinction for organization, coherence and academic content in the most recent national peer review (TAE). The aim of the program is to retain its strong international position and to strengthen its position in Europe and beyond by attracting more highly qualified international students to the MA. The department is currently working out plans for the introduction of a two-year international MA degree program in "Culture, Politics, Ethics" in collaboration with one or more partners in North America.

Research at ICOG is characterized by an interdisciplinary approach. It represents many periods and disciplines, ranging from (art)history and theory of literature to media studies and from performing arts to international relations.
