American University of Beirut (LEB) - Assistant Professor of American Studies[]

The Center for American Studies and Research (CASAR) at the American University of Beirut is seeking to appoint an Americanist from a social science or humanities discipline, starting August 15, 2017 at the rank of Assistant Professor. The hire will have joint appointment with CASAR and an appropriate department in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

We are particularly interested in a scholar whose research and interests engage the field of American Studies and can contribute to the center’s efforts to foster research and outreach. We hope to attract a candidate who can offer graduate courses in the MA program in Transnational American Studies as well as teach “Introduction to American Studies” and special topics courses in the Minor in American Studies.

Applicants must have completed their PhD by August 2017. The appointment is for an initial period of four years with opportunities for renewal and advancement. The usual teaching load is not more than 5 courses a year. The language of instruction is English.

The Program in American Studies at Barnard College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professorship beginning July 2017. Applicants should have a PhD in American Studies or a relevant field in hand and should specialize in some combination of the following fields: race, ethnicity and indigeneity, gender and sexuality studies, critical theory, media and visual culture, and/or the history of American social activism. Special consideration will be given to applicants with demonstrated research and teaching excellence in American Studies. Teaching responsibilities at Barnard will include the American Studies junior colloquium, one semester of the American Studies senior research seminar, and two additional courses designed in consultation with the Program director. Applicants should have demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching and advising.

Required Qualification Summary: Applicants should have a PhD in American Studies or a relevant field in hand.

  • I emailed the admin assistant about the website saying it hadn't received one of my LOR, and she never answered. I then called the dept, no one picked up, and I left a voicemail. No one ever returned my call. I emailed the chair of the dept and never got a response back. Red flag for a hot mess dept? (Nov 2016 - Jan 2017)

The faculty of the Interdisciplinary Studies Department/Program for Accelerated College Education in the College of Arts and Humanities at California State University Dominguez Hills invites applications from individuals for a tenure track position in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies/Program for Accelerated College Education in the College of Arts and Humanities.

Responsibilities: Duties include teaching upper-level undergraduate humanities courses in American literature (broadly defined) and culture for the major and General Education (in person and online); pursuing a program of active scholarly ; student advising; curriculum development; working with community partners; student recruitment; and assuming department, college and university committee responsibilities.

The Department: The department offers a single degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with four Areas of Concentration: American Studies, Comparative Cultures, Environmental Studies, and Global Studies as well as a complementary group of minors. It is not only a rigorous upper division academic program that values a broad-based Liberal Arts and Sciences curriculum but also a degree completion program designed to help working adults attain their baccalaureate degrees. IDS/PACE serves a student population that is diverse across all factors, including race, gender, ethnicity, class, ability, and age. The department maintains an active presence in the university and in the community through partnerships with local community colleges and public-sector employers.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in English, American Studies, or related field in hand by August 15, 2017. Evidence of a minimum of two years of effective solo (non-teaching assistant) college teaching experience Ability to teach upper division humanities courses at the undergraduate level. Ability to teach courses in one or more of the following specializations: the literature and culture of the American West, Los, Angeles, the Pacific Rim, Environmental Literature, Borderlands, U.S Ethnic literature, and the Digital Humanities. Evidence of successful research and scholarly production. Experience in teaching undergraduates from diverse age, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds, including adoption of appropriate pedagogical strategies for diverse student populations.

Preferred Qualifications Evidence of successful online instruction. Demonstrated experience in department/college/university service. Demonstrated experience with pedagogies that promote student success, retention, and graduation.

The Department of Leadership and American Studies at Christopher Newport University invites applications for a tenure-track position in American Studies, effective August 21, 2017. Applicants must be committed to undergraduate education and demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching and research with undergraduates. The successful candidate will have a teaching/research focus and expertise in the study of America’s origins, America’s intellectual or economic tradition, religion in America, or America’s place on the world stage. Teaching responsibilities will include the American Studies core, including AMST 100, the foundations of America, and AMST 200, the evolution of America, or AMST 300, a course that focuses on America’s role in the world, as well as an upper level course in area of the individual’s expertise. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to become a fellow in the University’s Center for American Studies, an interdisciplinary center that promotes teaching and scholarship on America’s founding principles and history, economic foundations, and national security. The nominal teaching load for tenure track appointments is 3-3. The Ph.D. in American Studies or closely related field is required for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. Davidson College (NC) - TT Asst. Professor - Environmental Justice (incl. American Studies) - CAMPUS INTERVIEW STAGE[]

The Environmental Studies department at Davidson College seeks to hire a tenure-track assistant professor in Environmental Humanities with an emphasis in Environmental Justice. We particularly welcome applicants with doctoral degrees in interdisciplinary Environmental Humanities. To complement our existing strengths in environmental literature, we also welcome applications from those who specialize in environmental justice with degrees in other humanistic disciplines such as American Studies, Art History, Cultural Studies, History, Philosophy, and Religion.

Teaching load is four courses in the first year, and five thereafter. Courses include an interdisciplinary foundation course in Environmental Humanities, a first-year writing course, and courses in the applicant’s areas of expertise at the introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels. The successful candidate will also mentor undergraduate research projects.

We are looking for a committed teacher-scholar who will maintain an active research agenda; participate in departmental and college-wide initiatives; advise students in Environmental Studies; and contribute to all levels of the curriculum. Demonstrated or potential teaching excellence is essential. In addition to the interdisciplinary major in Environmental Studies, Davidson has interdisciplinary majors in Africana Studies, East Asian Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and Latin American Studies, as well as interdisciplinary minors in Communication Studies, Digital Studies, Film and Media Studies, Global Literary Theory, Health and Human Values, Middle East Studies, and South Asian Studies. Cross-listed courses and collaborations with one or more of these areas and with disciplinary departments are encouraged. The successful candidate will be expected to have a PhD by August 1, 2017.

Kennesaw State University is now accepting applications for a nine-month, tenure-track assistant professor of American Studies/Latin@ Studies in the Interdisciplinary Studies Department, which begins August 1, 2017. We seek to hire scholars whose research fits into either or both of the following themes: 1) identity, experience, and representation ; and, 2) structural and institutional inequality . Successful candidates will compete in an interdisciplinary pool and have a record of accomplishment in one or more areas, including but not limited to: American studies, anthropology, art history, cognitive science, economics, English, ethnic studies, ethnomusicology, linguistics, history, neuroscience, philosophy, political science, psychology, public health, Spanish, sociology, women’s studies, and world heritage.

Assistant professor candidates should show promise of research excellence and creativity, while candidates for associate and full professor ranks should have a record of research excellence and creativity. The distinctive core sequence, which serves as the centerpiece of the general education requirements, emphasizes a deep examination of American society. DOC is designed to be an interdisciplinary curriculum that explores the promise of the nation's founding ideals juxtaposed to collective struggles to realize those ideals for all communities. The year-long Dimensions of Culture Program introduces TMC students to major issues in the history of the United States with an emphasis on the tension between the nation's founding principles and the inequality and lack of opportunity experienced by various groups over time.

Topics include:

successive waves of immigration
the formation of stratifications based on gender, class, "race," religion, and other categories
the social movements that struggled to fulfill the founding ideals
the role of institutions in the delivery of justice and equity, and
the cultural production that has been shaped by these issues.

All three courses in the lower-division DOC (Diversity, Justice, and Imagination) sequence provide undergraduate students with a critical language that allows them to analyze social problems in an intelligent and grounded fashion. In addition to attending core curriculum faculty lectures, students will participate in small discussion sections led by graduate student Teaching Assistants.

The Dimensions of Culture Writing Program Director will be an academic leader who, in addition to teaching in the program, will contribute to its design and help define its pedagogical vision.
