Full-Time / Tenure-Track Positions
- The Barrett Honors College of Arizona State University is expanding its faculty and invites applications for a position in the core Honors faculty. The faculty members of Barrett are non-tenure track Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, and Principal Lecturers; most are on three-year renewable and rolling appointments. The main teaching responsibility rests on a two-semester interdisciplinary seminar course, The Human Event, in which students examine important ideas from earliest writings to the present. Special attention is given to critical thinking and argumentative writing skills. In addition, faculty members teach upper-division seminars, and mentor honors students throughout their four years in independent studies, individual conferences, theses, and other forms of scholarly achievement.
- Barrett attracts many of the top students in the country and provides them with an enriched academic experience that challenges them and enables them to become better citizens. The typical Barrett freshman is in the top five percent of his or her high school class, has SAT scores of 1320 or above, and has a high school grade-point average of 3.81.
- We seek to fill a full-time, multi-year faculty position whose primary responsibility will be to teach the first-year Human Event seminar. Successful applicants will demonstrate experience in and openness to teaching primary sources through multiple theoretical/disciplinary/methodological approaches, across different cultures and historical eras. The position begins August 2014; the nine-month salary will be based on education and experience.
- Qualifications: A PhD in any field of the humanities, natural or social sciences that complements the academic focus of the existing faculty members. Candidates whose work integrates views from multiple areas of the natural sciences, the social sciences, and/or the humanities are encouraged to apply. Johns Hopkins University - Islamic Studies
As part of a new Islamic Studies Initiative across the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, Johns Hopkins University invites applications for a newly established tenure-track assistant professorship in modern/contemporary (post -1700) Islamic studies. We welcome applications from a variety of research specializations and disciplines.
The tenure-track line belongs to the Islamic Studies Initiative. However, the successful candidate will hold the rank of Assistant Professor and be appointed in the home department of his/her discipline. The Department of Literature at the University of California, Santa Cruz is searching for two positions during 2013-14 in the area of Mediterranean Studies, one in Ancient Comparative and one in Medieval/Early Modern, conceived of as a “cluster hire.” The position in Medieval/Early Modern Mediterranean Studies is found below. Medieval and/or early modern Mediterranean Literatures and Cultures. Work in at least two languages, including Arabic, Byzantine Greek, Italian, Ottoman Turkish, Persian, Spanish, or other relevant languages. Candidates should have a strong grounding in the tradition of their primary literatures, with interests in ways the larger Mediterranean region is a relevant category of analysis. We seek scholars with the appropriate linguistic expertise whose work transcends traditional literary and textual approaches by conceptualizing the medieval and/or early modern Mediterranean as a dynamic space of cultural and historical significance. The successful candidate will be expected to teach large undergraduate lecture courses and small advanced seminars, and to actively participate in the graduate program. This position carries a five-course equivalency workload, which normally means teaching four courses over three quarters and carrying other academic and service responsibilities. The ability to contribute significantly to graduate education and the mentoring of graduate students is highly desirable. The successful candidate must be able to work with students, faculty and staff from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures (MLLC) invites applications for a tenure- track position as Assistant Professor in Arabic Language and Literatures or Cultural Studies, beginning September 1, 2014. Knowledge of the Eastern Mediterranean and modern Middle East from an interdisciplinary and/or comparative perspective strongly preferred. Ability to supervise and teach in the Arabic language program, as well as develop and teach courses in English within a field of specialization that would enrich the MLLC department’s course offerings. Bryn Mawr College - Lecturer in Arabic Language
Bryn Mawr College invites applications for a continuing non-tenure track (CNTT) position in Arabic language to begin August 1, 2014. Candidates must already hold the M.A. or have the Ph.D. in hand by the August 1, 2014, start date. Candidates must possess native or near-native command of both Arabic and English, native or near-native mastery of Modern Standard Arabic, demonstrated success in teaching Arabic language to undergraduates in a North American context, and the ability to work well on a team. The successful candidate will be expected to teach and coordinate the first and second years of Arabic on the Bryn Mawr and Haverford campuses within a Tri-College Mellon-funded Arabic program, led by Swarthmore College, with a shared language curriculum. The CNTT would also be responsible for teaching some drill hours, developing the syllabus and exams for both first and second year Arabic, directing the drill instructor, and organizing events highlighting Arabic culture. The successful candidate will also be a member of Bryn Mawr's Middle Eastern Studies Initiative (MESI) Steering Committee.

Kenyon College (OH) - Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellow in Arabic
Kenyon College is seeking applications for an appointment as a one-year postdoctoral fellowship in Arabic for the academic year 2014-2015, renewable for one additional year. The fellowship is sponsored by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
