  • Applications due November 1, 2010.
  • Has anyone heard anything from BC?
  • Not a word since "application received" (16 Nov) (x3) -- did you get it by mail or email? I did not even get this confirmation.... It was by email. Strange, I didn't get this confirmation either.
  • I didn't either. But then, they asked for more information in Nov so I guess they got it.
  • Received affirmative action information form. (12/3) Anyone else heard anything? -- didn't even receive the affirmative action info form. wierd.(12/6)
  • Didn't receive the affirmative action form either. but was asked to send over the dissertation. (12/6)
  • Received the affirm. action form, perhaps they're staggering them? (12/7)
  • finally received the affirm. action form (12/8)

  • Does anyone know anything about this search, or if it was canceled? The deadline was December 1, so it could still be early to hear.
  • Isn't this a 'Chinese history" job? I guess that this posting should be in the Chinese history section.
  • AHA interviews to be scheduled by phone (x2)
  • has anyone received a phone call for AHA interview?
  • Yes, on December 13th.
  • Received a strange message this morning which explains in detail what this job is about. Neither a rejection nor a interview invitation. Does anyone else get a message like that?
Yes -- I received mine yesterday. I emailed the dept. chair about it and whether it might indicate that they may still want to schedule an interview with me. I received an even stranger response that interviews at AHA were all scheduled but that "the search continues" -- I cannot for the life of me figure out why they would send detailed position info to people whose applications they have already cut. Salt in the wound? Very strange. (x4) I did not even get a response when I e-mailed the chair after receiving the position description, very bizarre. ---Maybe an administrative error? (Such as-- someone emailed the description to the whole email list and not just the interviewees?)
  • Has anyone heard anything since AHA?
  • Same question: have they made campus invites
  • Yes.
  • When?
  • The week after AHA. Decisions are supposed to be made within two weeks.

University of Wisconsin-Madison[]

  • Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Asian history with a focus on diasporas since 1500. "Diasporas may include populations moving within or between Southeast, East, and South Asia, or Asian populations settling in other parts of the world."
  • Applications due November 1, 2010

-- Anyone heard anything? Didn't even get an asknowledgment of receipt... (12/7)

Last year, didn't they hire someone whose work focuses on diasporas in a South Asian context?

--I've got insider info here--this is definitely a real job posting.

--It is a real job posting for visa purposes, since the applicant they hired is not a US citizen. 12-8 could you please kindly clarify this case further? Does one have to the US citizen for the job? Do they make any differences in selection process based on the country of origin or whether one is a US citizen or not? I thank you so much for your further input.

--It does seem strange that they desire another faculty member who works on a similar area...(12/9)

-The comment above about this being a "job posting" for "visa purposes" doesn't make sense. According to USCIS regulations covering the granting of permanent resident status to highly skilled workers, it is correct that such an applicant would have to have skills or assets that could not be found easily--i.e. such an applicant would not be replacing a native worker. In many industries, it is indeed accepted practice in the rare cases that a current employee's international status is being converted to permanent residency, that a loyal employer would post such an ad (written in an extremely specific manner tailored to current employee). Except this is completely unnecessary and happen in academia. The academic job process, by definition, picks a uniquely qualified individual from an enormous pool (at least N. America) for the position. Legally and logically speaking, no additional documentation would need to be provided to the USCIS. In the cases that I am familiar with, no additional 'fake search' or 'double ads' were necessary.

Thank you so much for the above posting. I am also an international student (F-1 status). I have been in this country (USA) for the past ten years and i have my children here as the native US citizens. I am applying for the academic jobs and waiting for the interviews too. I was worried to hear the one's non-native status could make a difference! Please post if any of the friends do have any good knowledge about this. I thank you so much. Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas ad Happy New Year to you all!!!

- I am an international student as well and my phone interview has been recently CANCELLED simply because I am holding an F-1 Visa. (They told me that applicants must be eligible for working in the US "permanently,") So, your non-native status might make a difference in some cases.

- thank you for posting this, and i am sorry to hear that your F-1 status made a big difference. I think we can say that we will be eligible to work, first through OPT and then permanently, when the university sponsors us. This is what the system is like and 1000s of people are being recruited this way...please kindly update any important information. thank you!

12/21 "In many industries, it is indeed accepted practice in the rare cases that a current employee's international status is being converted to permanent residency, that a loyal employer would post such an ad (written in extremely specific manner tailored to current employee). Except this is completely unnecessary and happen [sic] in academia."

That this does not happen in academia is completely UNTRUE. It happens, and has happened, even within the UW system. I know of one recent case at another campus. Does it not strike any one as odd that the person they hired as a historian of modern south Asia last year fits the current job description? I agree with the posters above. There is something fishy going on here. It will be interesting to see how the situation pans out.

Come on people -- this page is for sharing information about specific job searches not whining or complaining -- that stuff belongs on the 'rants' page or shared with people who care.

---Huh, that's precisely what's being done here: sharing information about this particular job search. No one is whining or complaining about the job itself, only expressing legitimate concern about its authenticity.

Huh? No, they're whinining and complaining about the job search. This discussion belongs on the 'rants' page. I guess even baby's whining sounds reasonable to other babies, and like love poetry to mommy. For the rest of us, it's just whining.

        • To the poster immediately above: speak for yourself. I don't see it as whining at all. Like the orignal poster, I too want to know whether or not this job is an actual search. Curiosity does not equate to complaining. To the poster below: to date, I have not heard from the SC. And this only increases my doubt.

Has ANYONE received any acknowledgement of their application, requests for more material, or an AHA interview date?

I received acknowledgement of my application and affirmative action materials but no other requests. The letter indicated that shortlisting would be completed by 12/23.

  • Where is the humanities position listed? I didn't see it on IHE or CHE.
  • It was on H-Net: http://h-net.msu.edu/cgi-bin/logbrowse.pl?trx=vx&list=H-Asia&month=1010&week=d&msg=oRRU79vUGmNpdtnlk14eMA&user=&pw=
