none of my friends working on the Song-Ming period has heard anything. They are all from one of the best schools in the field. x3

Yes
I can actually count the number of recent graduates and ABDs working on the period from the Song through the Ming. Maybe they are looking for advanced assistant professor, if not associate. In that case, two people come to my mind. One now in GA and the other used to be in ME.
Don't forget about the advanced assistant Song guy in MI. The one in GA will be tenured next year.
It seems that they're looking primarily at the assistant prof level, so ABDs who didn't land an interview for the position shouldn't feel discouraged.

This is a great department indeed. Very collegial, fantastic scholars. It's sheerly bad luck. It's said that they will reopen the search next year.
So whom did they invite -- only people who already have TT jobs?
I would be interested to find out, not many scholars fresh out of grad school would turn down this job

Why senior hires?
This search is weird. They reposted the search ad recently and changed the position level from assistant to assistant or associate.
They expanded the position when they only received a handful of applications.
I note than someone deleted the comment on how Furman "screwed over their last Japan hire." While not tactful, let's keep things up and rebut rather than censor.
