    • I would say that the previous practice on the successull candidate was a gross viloation of personal privacy. Her personal information including facebook name, advisors' information, Chinese name, personal pcitures were published without the permission. What are the purposes of this website? facilitate information flow of what? Please be professional. Or use your time to focus on your own work or publication.

Interesting response. I remembered clearly that I provided the reasons why I wanted to delete my personal information on this website in 2012. IT WAS Ignored! More importantly, it was restored (probably by a name called AFII) with more of my personal information, including my facebook name, my Chinese pennamee, my advisors' names(including my previous advisor and my dissertation's second reader. How much public information it was? ), and a website with my personal picture. IT was gross.

Listen, we are all colleagues to some point. Stop being so unprofessional.

I haven't been involved with this situation, so I can't recreate what happened, but I believe the reverts probably occurred because of misunderstanding rather than ill intent. I am sorry that this has been troubling to you. The information has now been removed, and the means for communicating problems in the future have hopefully been clarified. Naming of hires and candidates is often a source of tension on the wiki, and the boundaries between what is appropriate and inappropriate are not always clear. How do you define "ill intent"? After I expressed my conernn about my privacy in 2012, my personal information still standed here until I told people that I left the institute, can you please delete my informaiton?

How do you define "inappropriate"? I used to work as a journalist. If my interviewee requests not to use her or his real name, I will have to respect his or her will. The editor here ignored my request and reposted not only my name, and also my facebook name, previous mentor's information, my second dissertation reader's information. Apparently, it was someone who graduated from the same institute with me. My classmate told me that lots of my personal information was post here; and it looked quite ill intented (even with a link that shows personal picture). Was that appropriate?

  • As already indicated, sometimes there has been confusion about what is appropriate; we are still learning. This site is hard to manage sometimes (particularly in this field).   • The edit, since deleted, of 05:16, March 16, 2012 by stated "And a reneg!! Second time this year an Esherick student backs out of a signed contract. When will people learn?" It's not clear what "people" the original poster was referring to. Candidates in this market back out of signed contracts because of the skewed timing of offers. When one school demands an answer within two weeks, you sign the contract even though you're waiting for news from other schools. When another school comes along with a better offer, it makes sense to take it. There's no penalty for backing out of a contract before you've even started working at a school, is there?
  • There's a reputational penalty, for you and your advisor / program. Doing this is douchebaggery and makes you look like a complete slime. If you want to wait on other schools, don't sign and just pass on the offer in hand. These are the hard decisions people make on the market every year. If you don't plan on moving again to a different school the effect on you personally is minimal, but you may have screwed over a school and other candidates. In the instances on this board, the advisor is retiring and the students may not want to move again, so it may have little effect on UCSD or any of the principals. I would also say that you can get away with this more if you are a star.
  • I disagree. First of all, the information about backing out of signed contracts isn't public (unless rumors here count, and there's no evidence that the rumors about the Ohio job are accurate). So how does the information get around to damage someone's reputation? Is someone going out of their way to say bad things about colleagues? Second, no other candidates or schools are screwed over. The original school tears up the signed contract and moves on to the second ranked candidate. It's common. I'd rather be a douchebag holding the job I really want for the next 40 years of my life than to be stuck with a job that's my second choice because of fears that someone on a rumors forum might call me a "complete slime"! Our reputations in this field should be based on our scholarship, not on personal decisions about what jobs we pursue and take.
