- Any word on campus visits?
- Anybody heard from them since the AHA? (1/17)
- invited for campus interview (1/17)
- SA or SEA?
- What were the fields of those invited for campus interview. I guess that question has been raised by someone before me (above) too
- Not so sure the info above (about campus interview) is reliable.
- Are you suggesting that they have not invited anyone for campus interview yet? What are your sources?
- I wouldn't take anything on this site as reliable, until it is substantiated by more than one person. There are those who post things just to create confusion, that's all. Good luck!
- I concur to the above post.
- The questions still remains: why has it taken them so long to offer invitations, if the above are true? Almost two weeks have passed since the interview in Chicago.
- My guess is that they may have invited for the campus visit (i am not the one, though), and only one may have posted the info
- Kind of doubt that of the many who have posted previously, this single posting represents anything material. Anything concrete at all to offer?
- This thread is getting very interesting, approximating to a suspense story.
- difficult for the historian to differentiate fact from fiction!!
- Any luck in differentiating fact from fiction so far folks?
- They have had campus interviews.
- When did they conduct them?
- in Feb before Mardi Gras
- Have they made an offer already?
- no offer made yet (feb 7)
- But campus interviews are complete?
- yeah, how exactly have they completed campus interviews if they are planning to conduct them in Feb before Mardi Gras, which falls on Feb 21?
- This thread is getting too confusing. Perhaps only the search committe members can shed light on the actual status.
- Final candidates were contacted awhile back, but it seems like this search is buzzing on the wiki and maybe no one dared comment here. Best wishes and good luck to everyone else--we all know it's a hard market, so hang in there.
- has an offer been made?
- Campus visits still ongoing (2/22)
- how many people have been invited to campus?
- I would presume between 2-3. That's a standard practice.
- updates?
- offer made
- accepted
- profile of the candidate?
- Rutgers PhD

- intend to interview in March
- have interviews already been set up? anyone know?
- Offers made.
- offers made to several. personal names deleted to prevent circulation of false information. (october 2012)
I have heard that at least one candidate has now gone off to Reading. And three offers were originally made. The third was to someone doing Southeast Asia.
- Hi all; I'd just like to remind posters that they're bound by the Wiki's Terms of Use ; while posting candidates' names is generally considered acceptable when they are publicly known/advertised, it could be a breach of privacy to post information about individuals which is not in the public sphere. If you choose to delete contributions for this reason please leave a note so the admins & other users can tell the difference between a legitimate edit for legal/terms of use reasons, and 'vandalism'. Thank you! AFII (talk) 07:18, August 3, 2012 (UTC)

- [1 July 2014] Successful candidate has asked that their name be redacted; they are no longer in this position at Augustana College. AFII (talk) 09:04, July 1, 2014 (UTC)
- I would say that the previous practice on the successull candidate was a gross viloation of personal privacy. Her personal information including facebook name, advisors' information, Chinese name, personal pcitures were published without the permission. What are the purposes of this website? facilitate information flow of what? Please be professional. Or use your time to focus on your own work or publication.
- BTW: Is it helpful to hide your identity by writing up a "grammatical sentence" such as "[s]uccessful candidate has asked that their name be redacted" ? Sorry to say this. We all know who you are. But we are much more civilized and respectful than you. Good luck with everything.
- [2 July 2014] Hi, just to be clear, I - AFII - who wrote the comment dated 1 Jul. above - am the moderator of the History pages on this wiki, and not the person requesting/making the edits; I edited the page to make it clear why information has been removed, which is good practice. If you're in doubt about what constitutes a breach of privacy and 'personal information', please check the wiki's Terms of Use. To make it completely clear - no 'personal pictures' were published here, and the name of the successful candidate (although perhaps not their 'facebook name') was (and still is) in the public domain. If you have concerns about, and want to delete, personal information on a wiki page, it is always a good idea to add an explanation about why you are doing so (try using the 'Edit Summary' box in the edit window) so that moderators & other users know why an edit is taking place, and that it is not just an act of wiki vandalism. AFII (talk) 14:07, July 2, 2014 (UTC)
Interesting response. I remembered clearly that I provided the reasons why I wanted to delete my personal information on this website in 2012. IT WAS Ignored! More importantly, it was restored (probably by a name called AFII) with more of my personal information, including my facebook name, my Chinese pennamee, my advisors' names(including my previous advisor and my dissertation's second reader. How much public information it was? ), and a website with my personal picture. IT was gross.
Listen, we are all colleagues to some point. Stop being so unprofessional.
- [Another mod.] Clearly there was miscommunication and confusion here. I haven't been involved with this situation, so I can't recreate what happened, but I believe the reverts probably occurred because of misunderstanding rather than ill intent. I am sorry that this has been troubling to you. The information has now been removed, and the means for communicating problems in the future have hopefully been clarified. Naming of hires and candidates is often a source of tension on the wiki, and the boundaries between what is appropriate and inappropriate are not always clear. Your perspective in this particular situation will help us to make better determinations in the future. --Una74 (talk) 15:24, July 2, 2014 (UTC)
How do you define "ill intent"? After I expressed my conernn about my privacy in 2012, my personal information still standed here until I told people that I left the institute, can you please delete my informaiton?
How do you define "inappropriate"? I used to work as a journalist. If my interviewee requests not to use her or his real name, I will have to respect his or her will. The editor here ignored my request and reposted not only my name, and also my facebook name, previous mentor's information, my second dissertation reader's information. Apparently, it was someone who graduated from the same institute with me. My classmate told me that lots of my personal information was post here; and it looked quite ill intented (even with a link that shows personal picture). Was that appropriate?
Is it hard to understand 己所不欲 勿施于人 N ever do to others what you would not like to be done to you?
Will you feel comfortable, if your name, including facebook name, mentors' information, and your personal picture available here? If that is routine, please get everyone's information and picture up here.
- As already indicated, sometimes there has been confusion about what is appropriate; we are still learning. This site is hard to manage sometimes (particularly in this field). Apologies for misunderstandings have been offered already; all I can do is offer them again. The problematic info. has been erased. More care will be taken in the future.

- [20 Mar] User edited the above to change 'multiple offers made and declined' to read 'offer made and accepted'. I've reverted it so that the discussion continues to make sense.
- An offer was indeed made a couple of weeks back and accepted

University of Colorado at Colorado Springs[]
- Tenure track assistant professorship in East Asian history.
- The Department of History at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs invites applications for a tenure-track position, at the assistant professor level, in East Asian History, with a specialty in China and/or Japan. Requirements include survey courses in Chinese and Japanese history, and specialized upper-division courses. The successful candidate must be able to teach graduate courses in East Asian history, and to participate in a multi-discipline Humanities program. PhD is required at the time of the appointment.
- Submit a CV, letter of application, list of 3 references and unofficial transcript. The successful candidate will be required to submit an official transcript of his/her terminal degree.
- Review of applications will begin 1 November 2011 and continue until the position is filled.
- Apply here: http://www.jobsatcu.com/applicants/Central?quickFind=66280
- Contact: Dr. Chris Hill, email: chillatuccsdotedu
- Notes:
- Semester-based teaching load is a 2/3 in the History Department
- Another note: I am a recent hire in this department and my colleagues are great, the students are solid, I have time for my research, and it is genuinely a collegial environment. I'll check back for questions periodically.
- UCCS is not a research institution as far as I know. It is more of commuter college.
- On the "research institution" note above. I am a faculty member of the department, and can tell you for certain that all faculty in the department have very active and vibrant research agendas, including many national research awards, external funding, etc. You will find here a healthy balance of active research and committed teaching.
- A couple other points to consider about UCCS and its future:
- We are growing! UCCS is in a strong growth trajectory. We are a very financially healthy institution = job security. See here: http://communique.uccs.edu/?p=4583
- Regarding resident versus a commuter campus. About 10-15% of the UCCS student population lives on campus and many more live close by to campus. Our regents just approved the construction of more dorms because our population is growing. So again, we are increasingly becoming more a resident campus. See here: http://communique.uccs.edu/?p=4494 and http://communique.uccs.edu/?p=4686
- We are a RESEARCH university. And now, it's official. See here: http://communique.uccs.edu/?p=3855 Since I joined the t-t faculty in fall 2010, in less than 12 months I've conducted two international research trips. Also, UCCS funded portions of these trips.
- Has anyone heard anything in regard to this position at U.C.C.S.?
- Currently receiving and reading applications. We will meet in the 2nd week of December to begin making longer short list. We hope to conduct phone interviews with semi-finalists probably in January, on-campus soon after that.
- Have letter writers been asked to submit their letters of recommendation yet by e-mail? My recommenders say that they haven't been contacted yet....
- Not yet -- selected candidates will be asked to provide letters later.
- A departmental representative will be at the AHA at the job tables in the job center. This is NOT for interviews of any kind, but just for informational purposes. Any candidates who wish may come by, find out more about the job/department, tell us more about your work, etc. This will be at the AHA Friday 3 - 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 - 1, in Chicago Marriott, Grand Ballroom, Salon I. Come by, say hi, and introduce yourself if you are at AHA.
- Anybody heard anything? Why is it taking these people so long to make a decision?
- Job posting remains open, and applications still accepted, until late December.Selected candidates will be contacted in the next few weeks and asked to provide letters of reference, but all candidates still being considered. Phone interviews will be conducted in the first half of January. All candidates encouraged to meet with us at the tables at the AHA job center.
- "Encouraged to meet?" - what does that mean? Is this a kind of pre-phone interview? Why can't proper interviews be arranged in that venue, I wonder. Looks like a disorganized search.
- Regarding a couple questions posted above.
- "Why is it taking these people so long...?" You can thank the bureaucratic public university hiring process. This isn't the private sector where hiring can occur very quickly, rather public institutions have to abide by very strict advertising and review timelines. (You might think back to how long your PhD admissions process took -- quite a while, no?) We certainly understand the anxiety that each of you are experiencing. I know it well as I went through it very recently. Please, hang in there! :-) Officially, the search cannot move forward until the job posting has been listed through Friday, December 16.
- "'Encouraged to meet?"' - what does that mean?" Great question. As we are not sending an offical search commitee to the AHA to conduct "official" interviews, we can't "formally" interview candidates at the AHA. But, as one of our faculty members will be at the AHA, you shouldn't miss this opportunity to "informally" let us know more about you. Every connection you make helps.
- Regarding, "Looks like a disorganized search." We are utilizing and abilding by a specific evaluation process -- each step takes time. 1. Defining the search. 2. Receiving university approvals to advertise. 3. University processes to formally announce the search. 4. Receiving applications on a university-dictated timetable. 5. Individually reviewing a large number of applications (1000+ pages of applicant materials) 6. Meeting to discuss applications in relationship to departmental needs. 7. Meeting to discuss and select the phone interview candidates. 8. Coordinate calenders to arrange phone interviews (which will ideally include all members of tenure/tenure-track faculty and long-time instructors). 8. Scheduling phone interviews (where we are today.). If that appears to be disorganized, then you are certainly entitled to your opinion. Of course, we all are busy teaching and working on our research too.
- In sum, we appreciate your interest in the position and we thank you for your applications and questions. Likewise, understand that the applicant pool is wonderfully strong. I know that every member of the commitee thought that almost every applicant was qualified for this posiiton. And that makes the decision-making process much for difficult.
- I'm just wondering why the search committee does not want to see rec letters when making an initial assessment. By the way, to the UCCS faculty member who is posting here, thank you very much. As you can see, there is a lot more written for this job than pretty much for any other job. That is very kind and helpful for you to do that. It provides an insiders glimpse into the process.
- To the applicants: I'm the faculty member who will be at AHA (my colleague also checks this board, so there are 2 of us). We are not conducting any kind of formal AHA interview, as mentioned above. Rather, since I was going to be on an AHA panel, I volunteered to man a table for some hours and meet with any applicants; don't take that as "disorganized" but rather as an attempt to be as humane as possible. We will be doing phone interviews in the first two weeks of January. As for rec. letters -- we have found in previous searches that asking for letters after drawing up an initial longer short list works best for us. We realize other departments do that differently, but we want to lessen burdens on candidates, letter writers, and ourselves.
- A decision was made and I didn't make the cut.
- Received request for letters of rec yesterday (12/14)
- on-campus interviews scheduled
- offer made and accepted

Once submitted, application materials cannot be changed or updated. The University only requires the attachments above for the application process. **All other sections in the online system are not required.**

- Submitted application at 12 PM 11/28. Got email asking for recommendations at 5 PM. Got rejection letter at 6:45 PM ("The Search and Screen Committee has completed the selection process for the Assistant Professor of History"). Recommendation letters didn't ship until the following morning at 4:45. Pretty tight ship they're running! Is this search finished, perhaps?
- Intriguing. So has anyone been contacted for interviews?
- Search is not finished as far as I know. They are still planning on interviewing at the AHA. Since the deadline for apps is today, Dec. 1, I'd assume that they will contact interviewees in a couple of weeks. To the person above who submitted their application, was that a form email you got from HR?
- Yes, first email (please send recs to email address on announcement, link to announcement which didn't work) was from admin asst in History, second email (thanks but we're done and no thanks) was from HR. I'm inclined to think someone was actually reading letters and rejecting immediately (which I apprieciate, actually).

- new poster here re-restoring after another person vandalised the wiki: just restoring the info about another reneg here by a ucsd student that was here but seems to get erased / restored. not sure if it's really fair to blame esherick though as pervious posters do. these people make their own decisions, can't blame him for their behavior. i'd encourage the circulators of the ref letters from the conference to post them here though--they are juicy! after reneg this job may still hire, so good news for all of us still looking.
- New offer made & accepted (mid-March)
- What about UCSD, and that professor? Can anyone fill me in?
- The edit, since deleted, of 05:16, March 16, 2012 by 209.226.25.124 stated "And a reneg!! Second time this year an Esherick student backs out of a signed contract. When will people learn?" It's not clear what "people" the original poster was referring to. Candidates in this market back out of signed contracts because of the skewed timing of offers. When one school demands an answer within two weeks, you sign the contract even though you're waiting for news from other schools. When another school comes along with a better offer, it makes sense to take it. There's no penalty for backing out of a contract before you've even started working at a school, is there?
- There's a reputational penalty, for you and your advisor / program. Doing this is douchebaggery and makes you look like a complete slime. If you want to wait on other schools, don't sign and just pass on the offer in hand. These are the hard decisions people make on the market every year. If you don't plan on moving again to a different school the effect on you personally is minimal, but you may have screwed over a school and other candidates. In the instances on this board, the advisor is retiring and the students may not want to move again, so it may have little effect on UCSD or any of the principals. I would also say that you can get away with this more if you are a star.
- I disagree. First of all, the information about backing out of signed contracts isn't public (unless rumors here count, and there's no evidence that the rumors about the Ohio job are accurate). So how does the information get around to damage someone's reputation? Is someone going out of their way to say bad things about colleagues? Second, no other candidates or schools are screwed over. The original school tears up the signed contract and moves on to the second ranked candidate. It's common. I'd rather be a douchebag holding the job I really want for the next 40 years of my life than to be stuck with a job that's my second choice because of fears that someone on a rumors forum might call me a "complete slime"! Our reputations in this field should be based on our scholarship, not on personal decisions about what jobs we pursue and take.
- There's not really no point defending anyone including yourself here. Wrangling on a public forum would only increase the damage [of one's reputation].
- Hill accepted offer
