So then what was the "short-list" all about? I'm confused, the grapevine said they weren't deciding
 
until Spring.
 
They chose a short list in December and then picked someone from that list, presumably by
 
talking amongst themselves, but also by contacting people's referees. (They called at
 
least two of mine.) I also thought that they would be making the decision later, but
 
they offered me the position in January.
