The School of Culture and Society, Aarhus University, invites applications for a permanent position as professor of Old Testament / Hebrew Bible Studies within the Department of Theology. The position is available from 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position: The professorship is offered with a view to attracting a particularly talented person who is expected to play a key role in the continued creation of innovative, internationally recognised research. The successful applicant is expected to contribute to core activities at the School of Culture and Society in general and the study of the Old Testament / Hebrew Bible in particular in the following areas: research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange. The professor will also be expected to provide academic leadership relating to research, education and academic development as well as contributing actively to the further development of the department, both nationally and internationally.

Research: The Department of Theology at Aarhus University has a pronounced and significant international profile and a strong research network. The successful applicant will be expected to take a leading role in developing the research programme with special emphasis on the Old Testament / Hebrew Bible in its historical, literary and theological context and to contribute to research initiatives in terms of new research projects with internal and external partners, including the attraction and administration of external research funding.

Applicants must therefore be able to document academic qualifications at the highest international level within the field of Old Testament / Hebrew Bible research. It is of vital importance that the successful applicant takes part in the daily activities of the department.

Education: Applicants should be prepared to teach and contribute to developing courses, learning and supervision on Old Testament / Hebrew Bible Studies at all levels of the department’s degree programmes in theology (BA, MA and PhD), and will be expected to have considerable teaching experience at university level. Applicants must also be able to collaborate on teaching in connection with other degree programmes offered by the School of Culture and Society, such as the departments of the Study of Religion, Philosophy and the History of Ideas, History and Archaeology.

Talent development: The successful applicant is expected to be able to identify the development potential of junior researchers and to contribute to the talent development and supervision of PhD students and to teaching and developing PhD courses.

Knowledge exchange: It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange as mentioned in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance in cooperation with civil society actors or in connection with the public dissemination of knowledge. Applicants should document any prior experience within the field of knowledge exchange.

Qualifications: Applicants are expected to formulate a vision for the contribution of their research to the wider field of Old Testament / Hebrew Bible Studies. Applicants must be able to document: Academic publications at the highest international level, corresponding to a Danish higher doctoral degree, including research innovation in the field of Old Testament / Hebrew Bible Studies. Thorough knowledge of historical-critical and contextual approaches to the exegesis and theology of the Old Testament / Hebrew Bible. Thorough knowledge of relevant human and social science fields which are relevant to Old Testament / Hebrew Bible research. Thorough knowledge of sources and cultures in the Ancient Near East, adjacent to Ancient Israel and Judah. Experience of active participation in international research collaboration. Experience of research organisation, including the obtaining and administration of external funding in the field of Old Testament / Hebrew Bible Studies. Strong teaching competences and experience of supervising at all levels. Commitment to teaching development, the supervision of student projects, talent development, research management, and the development of PhD courses.

Brown University (RI) - New Testament / Early Christianity[]

The Department of Religious Studies at Brown University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the assistant professor level with a specialization in New Testatment/Early Christianity to begin July 1, 2018. The successful candidate will be able to support graduate training in New Testament; complement exisiting stregnths in the department's "Religions in the Ancient Mediterranean" graduate track and programmng; be familiar with theory and methods of religious studies; and contribute broadly to our undergraduate curriculum.

Christendom Graduate School of Theology (VA) - Sacred Scripture (Open Rank)[]

Christendom Graduate School of Theology invites applications for an open-rank position in sacred Scripture to begin August 2018. Preferred AOC is either OT or NT. The ideal candidate's work will reflect concern with the intersection of biblical studies and theology, especially in patristic exegesis. Applicants must possess a PhD, SSD or equivalent. College of the Holy Cross (MA) - Hebrew Bible / Old Testament[]

The Department of Religious Studies at the College of the Holy Cross invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment to begin in August 2018, in Hebrew Bible/Old Testament. We particularly welcome candidates with contemporary methodological frameworks such as post-colonial, ecological, critical race theory, or feminist approaches. College of William and Mary (VA) - Hebrew Bible and Israelite Religion[]

The Department of Religious Studies at the College of William and Mary seeks applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in Hebrew Bible and Israelite Religion. We are seeking a colleague with a demonstrable commitment to teaching excellence whose expertise in the history and literature of the Israelite period will complement our faculty line in New Testament and Christian Origins. Particularly welcome are applicants with secondary research interests in the material culture of ancient Israel or in the cognate cultures of the ancient Near East. The normal teaching load is two courses per semester.

Cornerstone University (MI) - New Testament[]

Cornerstone University, an Evangelical Christian institution with over 2800 undergraduate and graduate students, is seeking nominations and applications for a New Testament teaching position at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary. The position is classified as a full-time tenure-track faculty position with faculty rank and base salary dependent upon educational and professional qualifications and experience. In partnership with other faculty colleagues, the position supports the biblical studies curriculum of the Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Christian Formation, Master of Arts in Counseling, and other Master of Arts degree programs which combine to enroll over 340 graduate students on an annual basis, both on-ground and online.

Candidates will possess a completed Ph.D. or Th.D. in New Testament, or related discipline, from a properly accredited institution (e.g. regional, international, or professional, etc.) by fall 2018, evidence proficiency in New Testament scholarship and graduate level teaching (including Greek and Greek exegesis), be a team player with honorable relational skills, and exhibit a genuine Christian faith commitment and theological alignment with the Cornerstone Confession. Specialization in Gospels is preferred, but not required.

The successful candidate will serve as a New Testament professor at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary (a graduate division of the University). This includes teaching six graduate level courses (on-ground and online) on an annual basis, serving student advisees, contributing to assessment projects within the division, attending divisional and full-faculty meetings, and serving on at least two committees.

General Theological Seminary (NY) -  Professor of Biblical Studies (Old or New Testament)[]

The General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church("General"), located in the city of New York, invites nominations and applications for the position of a residential Professor of Biblical Studies (canon and rank open) to begin July 1, 2018. This is a three-year term appointment with opportunity for renewal.

This professor should be ready to affirm General’s mission statement as summarized by the high value placed equally on ‘education and formation’ and share in the Seminary's commitment to fostering wisdom through an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to theological education. 

Educational requirements and responsibilities: Candidates should be qualified to teach required courses in the Holy Scriptures, as well as electives that reflect their own research interests.  The position requires skill and commitment in teaching both introductory and advanced courses.  A Ph.D. or Th.D. in a relevant scholarly discipline is expected.

Ability to teach a secondary competency will strengthen the application.  Candidates with a background in Homiletics are especially welcome.  

Candidates will be expected to teach 15 credits per year, engage in scholarship (publish, attend conferences, apply to external sources for grants and research funding, etc.), perform modest administrative service within the institution, and pursue outreach activities that may include travel to and service at Church-wide events and teaching/preaching in local parishes.  

Formational requirements and responsibilities: This position holder is expected to contribute to the common work of a faculty which values and participates in a highly collegial curriculum and community-oriented formation process. In addition to teaching and research, the professor is expected to participate in twice daily chapel (regularly leading services and preaching), attend daily common lunch, lead a weekly advising group, and otherwise engage fully in our common life together.  As a residential seminary, this person is required to live in a seminary provided apartment on campus.  

Personal characteristics:  It is expected that this person will be a confirmed member of the Episcopal Church, a Church in full communion with the Episcopal Church, or a partner church within the Anglican Communion. Ordained applicants should have a minimum of three years of service in parish ministry. Experience in congregational ministry will be viewed positively. Harvard University (MA) - Tenured Professor in Hebrew Bible[]

The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations seeks to appoint a tenured professor of Hebrew Bible. The Hebrew Bible should be the focus of a candidate’s research and teaching. Candidates are expected to be able to situate the Hebrew Bible within its Ancient Near Eastern context as well as treat post-Biblical Scriptural tradition in Judaism and Christianity. The professor of Hebrew Bible will be appointed in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and will work with colleagues in the Committee on the Study of Religion, the Harvard Divinity School, and other departments in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2019. The professor will teach and advise at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Basic Qualifications: Candidates are required to have a doctorate or the equivalent.

Additional Qualifications: Demonstrated excellence in teaching and research is desired. Huntingdon College (AL) - Assistant Professor of Religion (Old Testament)[]

The Department of Religion at Huntingdon College (Montgomery, Alabama) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor with knowledge of and ability to teach Biblical Interpretation with preferred expertise in Old Testament. Samford University (AL) - S. Louis and Ann W. Armstrong Professor of Religion and Chair[]

College of William and Mary (VA) - 1 year Lecturer of Classical Studies (Biblical Hebrew) []

The Department of Classical Studies at the College of William and Mary is recruiting for a one year, non-tenure-track Lecturer position that will begin August 10, 2018. This is a fixed-term position, with possibility of renewal. We seek an individual with expertise in Biblical Hebrew who can also assist the department in expanding the scope of its curriculum beyond the traditional focus on the Greco-Roman world. The successful candidate will teach three courses a semester, to include elementary Hebrew, Mythology (which may incorporate substantial comparative and/or Near Eastern elements), and, potentially, courses dealing with other aspects of ancient Mediterranean or Near Eastern cultures, history, literature, archaeology, or religions. The role of a fixed term Lecturer at Durham provides the opportunity to deliver outstanding education and research within an inclusive and supportive environment that is staffed by world class colleagues.  Lecturers will be supported to develop their academic careers by training and financial support in research and education, guided by a designated mentor. 

The current post arises from the award of a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship to Professor John for the period 2018-20. Trinity College Theological School (AUS) - 3 year Postdoctoral Research Fellow[]

Trinity College has a thriving community of over 2,500 students from Australia and overseas in its various educational programs, including a Residential College, a Theological School and a Pathways School. The purpose of this role is to increase the Theological School’s focus on research and to further its research output in alliance with the University of Divinity of which it is a constituent College.

The incumbent must have completed a doctorate in theology in the last five years and be able to demonstrate capacity for high level research, as well as possessing organisational skills. She or he will be expected to work towards publication of at least two peer-reviewed articles per year and make considerable progress towards the production of a scholarly monograph.
