Duke University Divinity School (NC) - Old Testament (Open Rank)

Duke University Divinity School seeks to make a faculty appointment in Old Testament, effective for July 2019. We welcome nominations for and applications from persons who have outstanding scholarly expertise in the critical interpretation of the Old Testament. Competence in the interpretation of the Old Testament as Christian scripture is highly desirable, as is competence in the history, culture, languages, and religious thought of the ancient Near East. The candidate appointed to this position will be expected to teach and offer leadership both in the Divinity School’s master’s degree programs and at the doctoral level.

The rank is open. Faculty rank and salary will be set according to qualifications and experience. A Ph.D., Th.D., or equivalent, are requisite. A professional masters degree in a theological discipline, and experience in ministry, lay or ordained, are desirable. Women, ethnic minorities, and United Methodists are especially encouraged to apply.

San Francisco Theological Seminary (CA) - Faculty Position in Old Testament-Hebrew Bible

Position Description

2019 Hire

Full-time, entry level faculty member

Qualifications:

• A PhD or its equivalent in the field of Old Testament/Hebrew Bible is required.
• A thorough understanding of the historical context of the Old Testament and interpretive methodologies with respect for a variety of approaches to biblical scholarship are prerequisites.
• The person shall demonstrate skill in teaching and a strong commitment to scholarship and research.
• It is also expected that the individual shall be ready to contribute to a critical and constructive understanding of the church’s ministry and to ministerial formation in an ecumenical Christian context.

Responsibilities:

• Teaching in the degree programs of SFTS (MDiv, MATS and DMin) and the MA and PhD programs of the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley is the primary focus of this position.
• The regular teaching load of an SFTS faculty member is two courses per semester with a summer DMin course taught every third year.
• All SFTS faculty members share in the necessary committee assignments and enjoy a generous sabbatical leave policy.
• Participation in SFTS shared governance including faculty meetings and occasional events is expected.
• Student advising for SFTS and GTU students is assumed.
• Up to one-quarter of the faculty member’s time may be dedicated to the teaching and advising of MA and PhD students.
• Membership in the core doctoral faculty of the GTU, pending GTU approval, is assumed.
• Members of the biblical studies faculty are encouraged as well to relate to the Near Eastern studies, classics, and history departments of the University of California, Berkeley, as well as the Jewish Studies programs of the GTU and University, as occasion arises.

Terms:

Three-year term appointment continually renewable with the possibility of being moved to tenure-track. Salary and faculty rank commensurate with qualifications and experience. Housing and benefits provided.

Westminster College, Cambridge (UK) - Tutor in New Testament Language, Literature and Theology

We are searching for a scholar and teacher with a passion for assisting church and academy in exploring scripture as it shapes the faith, practice and mission of the church. Applicants must be educated to PhD level. We would be particularly interested in applications from individuals whose areas of expertise include any of the following: scriptural and homiletic hermeneutics; the place of scripture in the formation of the early identity, culture and practice of the church in context; the relationship between scripture, liturgy and worship; the relationship between the Old and New Testament texts; or the theological interpretation of scripture. Candidates with other specialisms will be considered. This is one of two full time biblical posts within the college, and whilst having a working knowledge of biblical Hebrew, it is expected that this post-holder would be able to teach New Testament Greek at graduate level, and participate in the biblical teaching of the Cambridge Theological Federation (CTF), including advanced New Testament exegesis modules.

Durham University (UK) - Lecturer in New Testament

Contract Type: Fixed term (1/10/18 – 30/09/20) and full time but we will consider requests for flexible working arrangements including potential job shares

The role of a fixed term Lecturer at Durham provides the opportunity to deliver outstanding education and research within an inclusive and supportive environment that is staffed by world class colleagues.  Lecturers will be supported to develop their academic careers by training and financial support in research and education, guided by a designated mentor. 

The current post arises from the award of a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship to Professor John for the period 2018-20. Applications are welcome from those with research expertise in any area of New Testament studies. Those who currently teach in the area include Professor Barclay, Professor Francis Watson, Dr Jan Dochhorn and Dr Jane Heath, while many other staff in the Department have cross-disciplinary research interests that relate to the New Testament.  It is not anticipated that this period would be extended beyond the initial fixed term.

There is a weekly research seminar in New Testament, at which papers are presented by leading scholars from the UK and abroad as well as by members of staff and research postgraduates.

The successful applicant will be expected to teach modules in New Testament at undergraduate and taught postgraduate levels, to participate in postgraduate research supervision at an appropriate level, to undertake outstanding research leading to publications of international significance, and to play a full part in the life of the department.

Katz Center, University of Pennsylvania – Visiting Fellowship

The Herbert D. Katz Center at The University of Pennsylvania is now accepting applications for the 2019–2020 academic year on the theme of The Jewish Home: Dwelling on the Domestic, the Familial, and the Lived-In.

The Katz Center will devote our 2019–2020 fellowship year to the home—to what happens inside Jewish homes and what connects those homes to life outside. We invite applications from scholars in any academic field who are seeking to advance research that will shed light on this most formative and intimate of contexts for Jewish life, including the very definition of home.

As an object of inquiry, the home has not one door but many. We are planning a year that will look into the Jewish home across many different thresholds/entryways and look back out from the home into the broader world. Relevant topics may include the history of domestic architecture and material culture, anthropological research into kinship, parenting, gender roles, and master-servant relationships; literary instantiations  of the home as an object of memory and imagination; representations of Jewish domesticity in the visual arts, including theater, film, and television; the analysis of Jewish law as it relates to family life and sex; the economics of consumption and display; the ritual study of the life cycle as it plays out in domestic contexts; and urban studies that approach the home as part of neighborhoods or larger social contexts, among others.

Eligible projects may be focused on the home in any period of Jewish history, extending from the four room houses of Iron Age Canaan to contemporary Jewish retirement communities. The year is also open to projects that may not be focused on the home per se but are helpful for understanding it, such as research on the history of privacy or the anthropology of childhood. The Center’s goal is to support individual projects, but it also seeks to develop an intellectually diverse cohort which means the ideal applicant will be one willing to learn from and work with scholars from other disciplines or focused on other periods.

Eligibility

The Katz Center invites applications from scholars in the humanities, social sciences, and the arts at all levels. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or expect to receive their degree no later than August 2019.
