Open Searches: Full-Time / Tenure-Track Positions in Biological Anthropology[]

Baylor University: Assistant Professor of Anthropology  - Deadline October 1, 2019 - CAMPUS INTERVIEWS[]

The Department of Anthropology at Baylor University (Waco, TX) invites applications for an assistant professor (tenure-track).  This position is open to applicants with research and teaching interests in human genetics, including molecular anthropology, genetics of modern diseases, genetic epidemiology, evolutionary/population genetics, behavioral genetics, epigenetics, the microbiome, ancient DNA, bioinformatics, and all related topics.  Preference will be given to those who use genetic methods to study human health, and who are capable of teaching laboratory-based courses to undergraduate and graduate students.  Someone with a combination of active field and laboratory research is preferred.  The candidate should possess an earned doctorate (at the time of appointment) in an appropriate field of study.

The new faculty member will join a growing department with interest in applied perspectives on the anthropology of health, broadly conceived.  Interest in contributing to a new PhD program (in the Anthropology of Health) is required, and skills appropriate for training graduates for non-academic jobs are preferred.  Faculty members are required to contribute to teaching, research, and service.  Expectations for an active research agenda include publishing and granting, as well as involving students as appropriate.

The Department of Anthropology values diversity and is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic community through research, teaching, and service.  We also accept the American Association of Physical Anthropologists' Code of Ethics, the Society for Applied Anthropology’s Statement of Ethics and Professional Responsibilities, and the American Association of University Professors' Sexual Harassment Policy.  We pledge to respect each other, our students, and the people, animals, and places we study.

Applications will be reviewed beginning 08/15/2019 and will be accepted until the position is filled. To ensure full consideration, complete applications must be submitted by 10/01/2019.  The following materials should be uploaded into Interfolio : letter of application (explaining your qualifications, current and future research plans, and teaching experience and philosophy), current curriculum vitae, transcript of highest degree earned (or if PhD is in progress, a copy of official transcript showing completed PhD hours), and the contact information (names, email addresses, and phone numbers) for three potential references.  Finalists for this position will be required to submit official doctoral transcripts in advance of a campus visit.  Employment will be contingent upon the successful completion of a background check. To learn more about the above position, the Department of Anthropology, the College of Arts and Sciences, and Baylor University, please visit www.baylor.edu/anthropology/ .  Please contact Dr. Michael Muehlenbein (Michael_muehlenbein@baylor.edu) with any questions.

  • Question: I've heard all kinds of rumours about professions of religious identity and church based activity if employed by Baylor. Does anyone know if it's actually true?
  • Answer: Baylor discriminates against LGBTQ bc these are behaviors "contrary to biblical teaching," so i ca imagine they also discriminate against other non-Christian behaviors too. "The University encourages students struggling with (homosexual behavior) to avail themselves of opportunities for serious, confidential discussion, and support through the Spiritual Life Office..https://www.baylor.edu/student_policies/index.php?id=3229
  • Second answer, I work at Baylor in Anthro and we have no prob with LGBTQ, other faiths, or anything. To characterize the Anthropology dept as anti-anything is false. We are anthropologists, paleontologists, archaeologists, and work all around the world. To imply/say that we discriminate against anyone is false.
  • 10/16 - Letters of rec requested
  • 11/4 - invited for campus visit

      • Received an email from the chair of the search committee requesting letters.  11/20 (x5)
        • The email from the chair says they're hoping to have letters submitted by next Wednesday (Nov. 27).
    • In response to above - what do we think is going on for those of us who have a letter request in Interfolio but haven't received an email from the chair? Could the Interfolio request be a mistake? Given the tight deadline for letters, I'm not super hopeful. 11/21
      • Just received this message from the admin: "Thank you for your application for the positions in our department. At this time, please disregard the notification that you received from Interfolio that your application requires attention. It was sent due to a glitch in the system. No additional documents are needed for now. We apologize for the error." 11/21 (x6)
        • FFS.
  • Does anyone who has applied NOT have this request in Interfolio?
    • 11/21: I applied and DO NOT have a request in Interfolio. So presumably the Interfolio requests are legitimate. Although the fact that only some applicants have heard directly from the search committee is strange. Is it possible there are multiple committees since they are hiring for three positions?
    • 11/21: I applied and while I don't have any direct Interfolio notifications, if i review my application it says that 3 letters are required (and missing from my application). It doesn't give me any instructions or options on how to (or if I should) take action on this and it doesn't seem like I can edit the application to request/add these. Very confused! (x2)
    • 11/21: You can ignore that unless you heard from the chair of the search committee. There was a glitch in the system. Emory just notified a bunch of applicants via email that they didn't mean to request letters from them on Interfolio. You can see the full text of it in a comment above.
  • 12/3: Skype interview invitation. x4
  • 12/11: For those interviewed on Skype -- any idea when campus invites will be sent? (x2)
    • Nope. I'm guessing they need to share the recordings with the full committee (I believe one member was absent) and go over their notes. I would give it to to the end of the week.
    • I got an email on 12/11 with a follow-up Q from the committee so they're already deliberating.
  • 12/13: Campus invite extended. (x3)
  • 12/13: Rejection e-mail (x5)
  • 12/17: Has everyone who interviewed on Skype already heard back? I still haven't received an email.
  • 12/13: Campus interview (posted on 2020/01/05)
  • 3/3: Rejection email after campus interview.
  • 4/9: Junior offers extended; senior search apparently canceled.
  • 4/11: Confirming senior search is frozen without indication of being reopened

We are interested in scholars conducting research in such diverse topics as the evolutionary history of our species, disease-host co-evolution (e.g., malaria), genetics of diseases more broadly (e.g. cancer), ancient DNA, paleoproteomics , the evolution of human adaptation (including high altitude, skin color, and lactose tolerance adaptations), nutrition, behavior, and forensics.

The applicant will be expected to have an active research program in the field of evolutionary genomics or closely related field, and to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in biological anthropology. The regular teaching commitment for department faculty is three courses per academic year.

This information will be kept confidential and viewable only by the search committee.

  • Some insights I have learned which might be helpful
    • Take the diversity statement and diversity issues very seriously
    • Many MAGH clasess in the department are taught by bio anthropologists and the search committee chair is a bio anthropologist. Still, the eventual candidate will need to be approved by the entire faculty
    • There is a movement within the university (working its way through the faculty senate) to change the titles of lecturers like this to something like "Assistant Professor of Teaching, Associate Professor of Teaching, and Professor of Teaching". This would not change the terms of employment, but would better reflect the role of these state line lecturers (who are already voting members of their departments and larger faculty and are protected by academic freedom like other faculty). Some at the university would like to convert these lines into tenure lines--but that is a more long term and less likely prospect.
