This is a tenure-track 9 month position with twelve month duties, appointment to begin July 1, 2021. Candidates must have a PhD in Anthropology. Anthropologists from any subfield are welcome to apply.

Position Requirements

Primary Purpose

The Department of Anthropology at Idaho State University invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor opening for a broadly trained biological anthropologist with a focus in forensic anthropology to begin August 2021.

Key Responsibilities

Faculty in the department typically teach a total of six courses per year (three courses per semester). 40% Teaching/Advising

In addition to courses on DNA sequence analysis, population history modeling, and big data analytical methods relevant to the broad spectrum of career interests of students across the discipline, the new faculty member will also be expected to offer courses in biological anthropology and anthropological genetics. The standard teaching expectation is two courses per semester. All faculty are expected to:

Prepare for and attend all class meetings. In case of absence, faculty member must make arrangements for a substitute to teach class. Classes should not be canceled.

Provide instruction throughout the semester, usually 3 hours/week.

Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades.

Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught. Be available for a minimum of three office hours each week including reasonable appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours.

Mentor undergraduate and graduate students in independent research projects.

Adhere to program, College, and University policies.

40% Research

The successful candidate will conduct research in human evolutionary genomics to complement existing faculty research foci in human evolutionary genetics, ancient DNA analysis, biogeoarchaeology, the initial peopling of the Western Hemisphere, and regional population history. Geographic area of interest is open, but should complement existing faculty expertise in the circumarctic, the North American mid-continent, and Latin America. Tenure-track faculty members are expected to develop and maintain a research program of national and international stature that substantially advances scholarship and knowledge discovery throughout their career. Tenure-track faculty members are expected to publish in peer-reviewed journals and books, gain extramural support for their research activities, and present findings at national and international professional conferences.

  • Heads up that there is a lecturer at UNH with these exact qualifications. I contacted the department with some questions and tried to gauge whether it was an internal hire, especially since they are requiring letters upfront and it feels like virtually every posting this year has been for an internal hire and a complete waste of time. They are claiming it is an national search to expand their biological anthropology offerings but I'm not convinved. Also they said that they can request letters after the initial screening, so it doesn't seem like letters are actually required at the time of application.
  • I was a bioanth lecturer there before (yes, I know my IP address is visible) and I was not treated well. I am sitting out this application, even though my qualifications are exactly as described.
    • Can you elaborate? Was it the UNH climate, administration, anth faculty, etc? I'm trying to decide whether or not I should bother to apply (leaning towards no but trying to get as much info as possible).
    • Without going into exact details (such as year of the incidents or what happened) for fear of potential retaliation, it was a combination of all those factors. UNH was doing a particularly concerted union busting effort at the time, and I'm glad they had not succeeded at that point, as I had to call on my union support to halt various actions against me that would have violated the rules/contract stipulations for lecturers. My efforts were *robustly* fought against by the then chair. When the administration determined that my contract was not up for renewal (which I was expecting--it was a one year contract), I did not object in the slightest. The current chair is not the person I worked under, and I actually like Dr. Harrison-Buck very much, but I would be surprised if the overall power structure, both internal to and outside of the department, had changed much.

Position Description

The University of Washington (Seattle, WA) invites applications for a one-year Postdoctoral Scholar position, with likely renewal for at least a second year. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Dan Eisenberg, Associate Professor of Anthropology. Ideal applicants will have broad interests in the evolutionary biology of living humans. Job duties will be adapted based on the interests and career goals of the Postdoctoral Scholar. The fellow is likely to work on projects investigating telomere biology using data and samples from the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey, and the Tsimane Health and Life History Project.

The duties of this position include teaching bioanthropology and archaeology courses and to contribute to the department's NAGPRA consultation and documentation process. We are particularly interested in a scholar with experience with NAGPRA compliance, consultation and project management.

The successful candidate will teach 4 courses (1 Spring, 3 Fall), including a large online introductory class, Introduction to Bioanthropology (Anthropology 1003), and bioarchaeological courses to be determined in consultation with the selected candidate. In addition to teaching, the VAP will also contribute to management of Tribal consultation, documentation, and the repatriation of culturally identifiable remains and objects in the department’s NAGPRA collections.
