The Department of Anthropology at Idaho State University seeks an exceptional colleague for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the sub-field of medical anthropology to support and grow critical programming in teaching and research. This 9-month tenure-track position will begin August 11, 2024. Candidates will demonstrate collaborative research interests emphasizing the intersection between medical anthropology and Latinx/Latin American studies, complementing current department strengths and the health professions mission of Idaho State University. Successful applicants will have a strong background in cultural anthropology and ethnographic methods. Research foci may include, but is not limited to, public health, ethnomedicine, environmental health, mental health, violence and trauma, gender and sexuality, biotechnologies, globalization of disease, policy, among many.
Applicants should demonstrate original research specializing in medical anthropology or global health as evidenced in publications and grants, with the potential to attract significant external funding. Applicants should also demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in medical and cultural anthropology, student mentoring, community engagement, and a commitment to working with diverse populations, including Latinx and/or indigenous students.
The successful applicant will teach 6 courses (3 per semester) in medical and cultural anthropology, including introductory courses, upper division courses, and graduate courses that may be field based, service learning, online, or interdisciplinary. Faculty are expected to supervise undergraduate and graduate students, perform university and professional service, and conduct active research that involves students.

Overview:
The Anthropology Program at USU seeks a Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Biological Anthropology for a (9 month), full-time appointment beginning August 1, 2024. We seek applicants who study contemporary human biological variation with potential research foci on: Nutrition, fertility, stress, biodemography, genetics, infectious disease, health disparities, or microbiome research. Assistant Professor in Vertebrate Anatomy, Department of Biological Sciences, Marshall University
The Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Science at Marshall University is seeking candidates for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. Applicants must have a PhD in the life sciences, at least two years of relevant postdoctoral experience, and a research program in comparative, gross, and/or micro- vertebrate anatomy.
The new hire is expected to bring to the position a competitive research program in the broad area of vertebrate functional anatomy, and introduce new model organisms and novel approaches to the department. This research program should expand on and form collaborations within existing strengths in the department, such as evolution, organismal biology, ecology, physiology, and molecular biology. We will consider applicants with research programs in any vertebrate taxon but are especially interested in candidates with an interest in mammalian systems and questions that integrate vertebrate anatomy and morphology with functional questions in extant organisms. A research program that makes use of vertebrate collections will be considered a plus.
Teaching responsibilities will predominantly be in the department’s general education and core courses for biology majors including courses in both human anatomy and vertebrate comparative anatomy. Prior experience in teaching undergraduate courses in vertebrate anatomy, mammalogy, and/or microanatomy/histology is preferred. The hire will also be expected to develop new graduate and upper-level undergraduate courses in their specific area of interest.

Assistant Professor of Archaeology/Physical Anthropology, New Mexico Highlands University (Open until filled)
We seek a bioarcheologist with a background in North American archaeology, or with previous field, or museum expertise dealing with skeletal collections. Applicants who have training and experience with NAGPRA or collections management are also encouraged to apply. The primary responsibilities of this position are to teach lower-division, upper-division, and graduate-level archeology, physical anthropology, and forensic anthropology courses; teach using various modes of instruction (e.g., F2F, distance); conduct scholarly activities including archaeological and/or bio-archaeological research; publish findings in academic publications; participate fully in departmental activities; serve on university committees; advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students; serve on thesis and professional paper committees; and other duties that may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must have a terminal degree (Ph.D.), in Anthropology (ABD will be considered) with a specialization in bioarcheology and a regional specialization in prehistoric North America. Overall, we seek a bio-archaeologist who can contribute to our growing graduate program (M.A) in CRM. The candidate should have a history working with marginalized or Indigenous communities, or experience with tribal agencies, state SHPOs, a body of work in Cultural Resource Management (either at the federal or private level) or working with skeletal collections.
Preferred Qualifications: The department has Sociology, Anthropology and Criminology programs, with a Master’s program in Southwest Studies, Cultural Resource Management and Criminology. As such, an applicant that can contribute to the departments strength’s in CRM, Southwest Studies, or Forensic Anthropology/Criminology will be given preference. Additionally, experience in curating collections of archaeological and ethnographic materials, skeletal collections, and a background in regulations pertaining to NAGPRA would be welcome.
Evidence of teaching related to archeology and physical anthropology, experience in Cultural Resource Management, tribal relations, and membership and involvement in one or more professional organizations, experience in the use of technology in the classroom, and delivery of on-line/distance learning courses will also be given preference.

The Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Riverside, invites applications for a tenured faculty position at the rank of Professor who will also serve as Department Chair. The successful candidate will have demonstrated higher education leadership experience and a vision to position the department at the forefront of educational attainment and world-class research in the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (CHASS) and across UCR-wide initiatives relating to interdisciplinary teaching and learning.
We seek applications from broadly trained anthropologists whose teaching and research interests build upon and complement that of the department. Research focus may include living or past populations, including the intersecting social, material, and biological aspects of human life. The Department of Anthropology invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in biological anthropology to start August 2024. This position is part of a cluster of recent hires whose research interests are thematically related to issues of Crisis, Resistance, Sustainability, and Resilience.
Geographic area and research foci for this position are open; we seek a biological anthropologist whose work lies at the intersection of human-environment interactions, sustainability, and resilience. Applicants must have expertise in both bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology. We are searching for an anthropologically grounded biological anthropologist.
We require that the candidate demonstrate an active research program in bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology. Candidate’s research interests should complement but not duplicate those of current departmental members. The candidate’s research agenda in bioarchaeology or skeletal biology should be demonstrated by funding, publications, presentations, and projects. Forensic anthropological expertise should be evident by means of previous forensic anthropological casework, demonstrating an ability to apply osteological and forensic skills to law enforcement cases (e.g., forensic casework, field recovery, authoring case reports, expert witness). The successful candidate will be able to teach a 2-2 course load of introductory courses in biological anthropology, elective undergraduate courses, and graduate courses in areas of specialization.

The successful candidate is expected to bring complementary expertise to the existing ones in the Department to enhance our strength in research and training in Bioarchaeology/Biological Anthropology, as well as teaching in our Bioanthropology Certificate. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) has established an interdisciplinary Forensic Sciences master’s degree program with plans to obtain FEPAC accreditation. The program is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences with core participating faculty from the departments of Anthropology, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, and Criminal Justice Studies. We are seeking an experienced and motivated director who will provide leadership in establishing the program, prepare for and oversee the accreditation process, manage curriculum and resources, recruit and hire part-time lecturers to teach courses, pursue the University’s goals in anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and work collaboratively with external and internal stakeholders. The program director shall be a full-time, tenured-eligible faculty member, appropriately qualified to meet the program’s stated mission, goals, and objectives. They will also provide leadership in forensic science education, research, and other scholarly activities so that students are adequately prepared for forensic science practice.
This is a full-time position with a 12-month appointment reporting to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. In addition to administrative duties, the director is expected to teach two courses per academic year. The director is also expected to engage in research in their area of expertise.

We seek a scientist trained in forensic anthropology with a research program grounded in biological anthropology. Research area is open; however, preferred research foci include skeletal and/or dental anthropology/biology, functional anatomy, or bioarchaeology. We seek applicants who will both augment the department’s strength in evolutionary anthropology and lead a coordinated effort to perform forensic anthropology casework in partnership with law enforcement and other medicolegal professionals in the state of Ohio. The preferred candidate will mentor and advise students in our new Forensic Anthropology major (BS) and forthcoming MS in Forensic Anthropology, with opportunities to advise PhD students in Anthropology. The geographical focus is open, with the successful candidate demonstrating a successful record of studying areas such as social and structural determinants of health and biocultural approaches to behavior and well-being. Postdoctoral Scholar, Primatology in Anthropogenic Landscapes, San Diego State University (Due Dec 1)
The Department of Anthropology at San Diego State University invites applications for a postdoctoral research fellow in primatology. This position is part of a NSF funded project integrating anthropology and statistics to understand how primates adapt to risk and rewards in anthropogenic landscapes. The postdoc would work primarily with the PI, Dr. Erin Riley (SDSU), with extensive collaboration with co-PIs Dr. Henry Scharf (Statistics, University of Arizona), Dr. Amanda Ellwanger (Anthropology, Georgia State University- Perimeter College), and the PI’s Indonesian counterpart, Dr. Ngakan Putu Oka (Forestry, UNHAS). This is a one-year position with the possibility of an additional year of funding. The postdoc would primarily work at Bantimurung Bulusaraung National Park in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, focusing on behavioral, ecological, and spatial data collection related to macaque decision making and human-macaque interaction. In addition, the postdoc will help train and lead research assistants in data collection and have a role in the preparation and publication of peer-reviewed publications.
The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Anthropology, Biology/Zoology, or a related field and: 1) experience collecting behavioral data on free-ranging primates; 2) strong quantitative data analysis skills; 3) experience mentoring diverse students; 4) strong communication and leadership skills, including working as part of a diverse team; and 5) experience working in remote field conditions for extended periods of time.

2-Year Ross-Lynn Postdoctoral Fellowship in Primate Behavior and Ecology, Purdue University (Due Nov 15)
Position Description
The Fellow will contribute to ongoing and new research projects in primate behavior and ecology under the supervision of Dr. Stacy Lindshield. Most of the full-time effort will be dedicated to advancing a longitudinal research program on savanna chimpanzees in Senegal and the collaborative HUNTRESS (HUnting, Nutrition, Tool-use, Reproductive Ecology, and meat Sharing in Savanna chimpanzees) project. The HUNTRESS team includes faculty members at Purdue, Texas State University at San Marcos, University of Utah, and Université Cheikh Anta Diop in Senegal. The Fellow will work closely with Dr. Lindshield to submit several external grant proposals, productively contribute to journal publications, and present their research at professional conferences. They will make substantial contributions to a high volume of upcoming publications and propose new projects where they would serve as lead author. The Fellow will allocate their full-time effort to the following activities: 1) data analysis and manuscript preparation for current projects (~50-60%), 2) external grant submissions for current and new projects (~30-40%), and 3) other professional development activities, such as presenting research at conferences, attending training and development workshops, and preparing for the academic job market (~10%). By the end of the two-year appointment, a successful Ross-Lynn Fellow will have added several publications, research presentations, and external grant submissions to their professional portfolio, and will have cultivated their unique research trajectory with supports from the Department of Anthropology at Purdue University.
Qualifications
The Ross-Lynn Postdoctoral Fellow is required to have a Ph.D. in Anthropology or a related field, and a research specialty in primatology or a similar area, such as animal behavior or wildlife ecology. Motivated candidates who have a strong track record of journal article publications, external funding, and experience in quantitative data analysis are especially encouraged to apply. Possessing the ability to write often and skillfully in English, and utilize strong organizational and time management skills flexibly are requirements of this position. Experience with statistical software packages such as R, geospatial software (e.g., ArcGIS), and proficiency in French oral and written communication are preferred. Postdoctoral Scholar — University of California, Davis (Applications reviewed starting March 1)
The Integrative Anthropology Lab at the University of California, Davis is looking to recruit a post-doctoral scholar to study ritual and religion among the Mentawai people (Siberut, Indonesia) with a focus on traditions that explain and deal with misfortune. This is a two-year position and partly funded by a grant from the Templeton Religion Trust. Potential research topics include shamanism, witchcraft, beliefs in local spirits, healing ceremonies, hunting magic, funerals, and local models of illness. The scholar will work closely with Prof. Manvir Singh to design and conduct field studies that include both qualitative and quantitative methods. The University of Illinois at Chicago (Chicago, IL) invites applications for a one-year Postdoctoral Scholar position, with likely renewal for at least a second year. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of and in collaboration with Dr. Katie Starkweather, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, on various aspects of the Shodagor Longitudinal Health and Demography Project. The project has collected several years of longitudinal and cross-sectional data on individual and household economics, adult and child nutrition, growth, and health, women’s time allocation, movement patterns associated with different livelihoods, social networks, parental investment, and more. Primary responsibilities for the successful applicant will include data analysis and visualization, database management, and manuscript preparation, and may also include fieldwork and/or teaching, depending on the individual’s preferences. They will gain experience with publishing, grant writing, mentorship, working with different types of data, and possibly teaching and/or fieldwork as well.
Necessary qualifications include:
- A PhD in Biological Anthropology or a related field
- Strong quantitative data analysis skills, with an interest in expanding one’s skillset
- Experience with or willing to learn database management and data visualization

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is accepting applications for a Post-Doctoral Teaching Scholar (non-tenure track) appointment to begin fall 2024. The Teaching Scholar should specialize in biological anthropology with a preference for scholars with training in human skeletal variation or bioarchaeology. The candidate should be able to teach upper division courses such as human osteology, paleopathology, and human variation, and have experience teaching introductory biological anthropology courses. Successful applicants should demonstrate motivation to teach and mentor undergraduate students and show evidence of an ability to publish research in their substantive specialty. The Post-Doctoral Teaching Scholar will be expected to teach two courses each semester and pursue their own research agenda. This is a one year position with the possibility of renewal. University of Alaska Fairbanks: Term (Visiting) Assistant Professor of Anthropology (rev begin 5/01)
The University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Anthropology invites applications for a non-tenure track Assistant Professor of Bioanthropology. Applicants must have training in biological anthropology and independent research experience on a specific question within biological anthropology. Expertise in dental anthropology, human biological variation, bioarchaeology, forensic anthropology, human osteology and pathology, or paleogenetics is a plus, but all research foci will be included.
Candidates shall demonstrate excellence in teaching. The teaching load and duties specifically may include a lower division, four-field, introduction to anthropology course (ANTH F101), introduction to biological anthropology (ANTH F221), human osteology (ANTH 422/622, analytical techniques (ANTH 426/626), anthropology and race (ANTH F225), human biological variation (ANTH F315), other established lower and upper division/graduate courses as needed, and courses in area of specialization. The successful candidate must hold office hours appropriate for the courses being taught and develop and modify curriculum for distance delivery and other teaching modalities.
