Position: Assistant Professor of Children’s and Young Adult Literature

Starting Date: Fall 2019

Minimum Qualifications: 1) An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in English or closely related discipline from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required; however, applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered. For appointment, the doctorate must be completed by the date of appointment (8/19/2019). 2) Evidence of successful teaching at the undergraduate level. 3) Evidence of scholarly activity in the field of Children’s and/or Young Adult Literature.

Preferred Qualifications: 1) Evidence of teaching expertise in Children’s and Young Adult literature 2) Evidence of research in Children’s and Young Adult literature that spans multiple periods and productively intersects with one or more of the following: print culture; genders and sexualities studies; critical studies of race and ethnicity; environmental criticism; and/or English Education.

Duties: The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities generally include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.

The successful candidate will teach lower-division, upper-division, and graduate courses in the department and will design new courses in their area of expertise.

The Department: The English Department at California State University, Los Angeles, cultivates students’ imaginations and critical skills through the intensive study of literature and language. Offering programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts and the Master of Arts degrees, the department provides courses that build on the traditional study of British and American literary history while encouraging students to further explore literary theory and criticism, world literatures and transnational critical paradigms, children’s literature, creative writing, rhetoric and composition, interdisciplinary cultural analysis, and the history and structure of the English language. Drawing on the richness of L.A.’s geographical and cultural context, the department equips students to see the study of literature and language as both personally enriching and publicly meaningful within their own communities. Those communities may be defined through the department’s direct engagement with the neighborhoods of East L.A. and the San Gabriel Valley or regarded as a global terrain, in which Oxford connects to Oaxaca and where ideas resonate from ancient Greece and Rome to the contemporary Pacific Rim.

Position Title: Assistant Professor of English (Secondary English Education)

The Missouri Southern State University Department of English and Philosophy invites applications for an Assistant Professor with a specialization in Secondary English Education, appointment to begin August 1, 2019 in Joplin, Missouri.

The English Program is committed to providing strong training for future teachers and to supporting their development in the areas of content knowledge, pedagogy, and global education issues. The successful candidate will teach such undergraduate courses as Young Adult literature, Teaching Writing in the Middle and Secondary Schools, and Teaching Methods in Secondary English Education. The candidate may also travel to site locations to observe student teachers, establish positive working relationships with area schools, and collaborate in the planning and development of training materials and courses related to the education program as well as to the student teaching experience.

The successful candidate must have grades 9-12 English certification, as well as evidence of quality postsecondary teaching. FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES

In addition to teaching and scholarship, faculty are expected to engage in service to the department, school, and community. THE DEPARTMENT

The English Department has ten full-time faculty, 25 adjunct faculty, and 216 majors. The Department offers a B.A. in English with emphases in literature, Single Subject credential preparation, and creative writing, and an M.A. in English with emphases in literature, rhetoric, and creative writing. It hosts the Sonoma Writers Festival, a Writers on Writing series, and the literary magazines Zaum and Volt have their home in the Department, offering students the opportunity to advance their editorial skills in the production of these distinguished periodicals. DUTIES OF THE POSITION

The Department of English at Sonoma State University seeks dynamic candidates with proven teaching and leadership abilities in English education. Desirable qualifications include expertise in several of the following areas: applied linguistics for teachers; working with English language learners; digital/new literacies; reading pedagogy; English grammar (pedagogical and rhetorical); literature, including world, multicultural literature, and/or young adult literature. English education is one of three emphases in the English Department, along with literature and creative writing. Our students are undergraduate English majors who intend to pursue a career in teaching. We are interested in candidates who will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education through their teaching, research, and service. In particular, we encourage those from historically underrepresented populations (e.g., African American, Latinx, Native American, LGBTQ+, etc.) to apply.

 

Candidates will teach three courses per semester in the following areas: English education pedagogy and methods, literature, specialty courses in the Master’s Program, general education, and composition.

Directing M.A. theses in areas of expertise is also expected. In addition to teaching and continuing research and scholarship in their areas of expertise, faculty are expected to develop new contributions to the curriculum and to work with the greater community. For the first two years, the candidate will teach two courses each semester.

Faculty are also expected to engage in academic advising, to assist the department with program assessment, administrative and/or committee work, and to serve on School- and campus-wide committees. PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have demonstrated excellence in teaching; potential for successful research and scholarship; and proven ability to work with a diverse student body, ranging from freshmen to graduate students. The candidate must have a Ph.D. in English, English education, or a closely related field. ABD’s will be considered if the degree is in hand by August 19, 2019. Required qualifications include expertise in current approaches to the teaching of literacy and composition, evidence of culturally sensitive pedagogy and principles, and university teaching experience. Candidates with a strong background in teacher preparation and a commitment to educational equity and disciplinary innovation are of particular interest. Desirable qualifications include several years of teaching experience at the secondary (6-12) level; writing pedagogy; experience teaching literature, especially young adult literature; linguistics; familiarity with CCSS; evidence of a commitment to diversity and equity in education through scholarship, teaching, and/or engagement; knowledge of and experience working with multicultural and multilingual populations in public schools; and experience in collaborative work with teachers.

 

To be recommended for tenure, the candidate must demonstrate satisfactory performance in four areas: teaching effectiveness; scholarship, research, creative achievement and professional development; service to the University; and public service and service to the community. Although tenure may be granted at any time, contract provisions specify that "the normal period of probation shall be a total of six (6) years of full-time probationary service and credited service, if any. Any deviation from the normal six (6) year probationary period shall be the decision of the President following his/her consideration of recommendations from the department or equivalent unit and appropriate administrator(s).” Tenure is required for promotion above the level of Associate Professor.

RANK AND SALARY

Salary, service credit, and rank (when appropriate) depends upon academic preparation and professional experience. The salary range for this position is $74,200 - $80,878.

Position Title: Assistant Professor of English (Young Adult Literature and English Education)

About the University: Western Washington University, with over 15,000 students in seven colleges and the graduate school, is nationally recognized for its educational programs, students and faculty. About the Position: Standard quarter system teaching assignment (currently 2-2-2), with specialty courses at the undergraduate and MA/MFA levels; general education courses and other courses depending on the candidate's interests and departmental needs; exemplary teaching, including fulfilling teaching responsibilities in ways that support an equitable and inclusive learning environment for students; a high quality program of scholarly activity; service to the department through a range of activities that include advising secondary English education majors, contributing to curricular and program development, and collaborating with the Woodring College of Education and local schools.

Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in English or a related field, or Ed.D. with an emphasis in English education by September 1, 2019. Demonstrated currency in the field of young adult literature and English education, and potential for strong scholarship and publication in young adult literature, pedagogy, and related fields. Preferred Qualifications: Recent middle or high school teaching experience and/or professional development work in the schools. Demonstrable secondary areas of expertise such as children's literature, literature and writing pedagogies, writing or film studies for prospective middle and/or high school teachers. Interest in serving on WWU's Children's/Young Adult's Literature Conference Advisory Board.
