Arizona State University, Barrett Honors College  - Lecturer (Renewable) []

  • The Barrett Honors College of Arizona State University is expanding its faculty and invites applications for a position in the core Honors faculty. The faculty members of Barrett are non-tenure track Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, and Principal Lecturers; most are on three-year renewable and rolling appointments. The main teaching responsibility rests on a two-semester interdisciplinary seminar course, The Human Event, in which students examine important ideas from earliest writings to the present. Special attention is given to critical thinking and argumentative writing skills. In addition, faculty members teach upper-division seminars, and mentor honors students throughout their four years in independent studies, individual conferences, theses, and other forms of scholarly achievement.
  • Barrett attracts many of the top students in the country and provides them with an enriched academic experience that challenges them and enables them to become better citizens. The typical Barrett freshman is in the top five percent of his or her high school class, has SAT scores of 1320 or above, and has a high school grade-point average of 3.81.
  • We seek to fill a full-time, multi-year faculty position whose primary responsibility will be to teach the first-year Human Event seminar. Successful applicants will demonstrate experience in and openness to teaching primary sources through multiple theoretical/disciplinary/methodological approaches, across different cultures and historical eras. The position begins August 2014; the nine-month salary will be based on education and experience.

Bucknell University (PA) - Open Rank- POSITION FILLED[]

The Department of East Asian Studies at Bucknell University invites applications for an open rank, tenure-track faculty position to begin August 2014. We seek a teacher-scholar in the humanities (with the exception of history and religion) able to teach Mandarin Chinese language at all levels in addition to courses in his/her area of specialization, and who is committed to integrating diversity issues into the curriculum. Although a Ph.D. at the time employment begins is preferred, candidates who are ABD will also be considered. Teaching responsibilities include five courses over the academic year, of which at least three courses will be Chinese language; and at least one will be in Chinese culture, taught in English. Specific courses offered will depend upon departmental needs and will determine whether the remaining course is in language or culture, although the department predicts that the remaining course will be in the core major area of language. Teaching experience, both language and culture, and/or formal training in teaching Chinese as a foreign language highly favored. California State University, Sacramento - TT Chinese-Mandarin[]

Required: Terminal degree, in Chinese language or equivalent that prepares holder to teach Chinese as a foreign language. Scholarly specialization is open.

Candidates must have native or near-native fluency in both Chinese and English; demonstrate commitment to teaching language in a cultural context; and show willingness to work with interdisciplinary Asian Studies program.

Preferred: Ability to work effectively with diverse student body. Preference to candidates with native or near-native fluency in another Department language; and/or with demonstrated leadership experience; and/or experience in preparation of high school language teachers.

Citadel (SC) - Assistant/Associate Professor in Chinese - CAMPUS VISIT[]

The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina is accepting applicants for an open-rank, tenure track position in Chinese beginning Fall 2014 in the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures. The academic rank of the successful candidate will be based on the strength of his/her credentials.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Chinese and demonstrate native or near-native fluency in Chinese and English, and show promise of scholarship. The successful candidate will teach Chinese at all undergraduate levels, and will be responsible for developing a minor program in Chinese and an ability to teach Chinese at all undergraduate levels.

Columbia University - Modern Chinese Film / Visual Culture[]

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in modern/contemporary Chinese humanities specializing in film, visual arts, and/or media. Columbia University - Premodern Chinese Literature / Poetry[]

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures is seeking to fill a tenure-track assistant professor position in premodern Chinese literature and humanities with specialization in poetry and cognate areas in cultural history and the humanities broadly defined. The person will be responsible for teaching broad courses for undergraduates and specialized courses for graduate students as well as classical Chinese. The incumbent will work closely with colleagues to develop an innovative curriculum at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. We expect the successful candidate to have broad comparative interests and to participate in Core courses like East Asian Humanities and Chinese Civilization. Cornell University - Asst. Professor of Early Chinese Lit. - OFFER MADE[]

The Department of Asian Studies at Cornell University announces a tenure-track assistant professor position for a scholar and teacher of early Chinese literature specializing in any area of literary production, including histories of texts and writing, intellectual history, material culture, and the intersection of literature and religion, during any pre-20th century period; the primary focus of this search is from the Song through the Qing dynasties, but scholars specializing in earlier periods who engage themes or theoretical approaches that cross national boundaries or conventional periodization are also welcome to apply. Candidates should be able to teach a general education “Introduction to China” class as well as more advanced undergraduate courses and graduate seminars, including Classical Chinese. Ph.D. in hand by July 1, 2014, and publishing record or strong potential for publishing is important.

  • 11/27: Anybody heard anything yet from the committee? Just curious.
  • 12/4: I was one of three candidates who visited the campus in November. There was no Skype interview. The last interview was 11/19. Haven't heard anything yet but am still somewhat hopeful. I do suspect they may have already offered it to another candidate, however. But there's always a chance candidate one will take a different job, of course, so a little hope there as well. Pretty sure they want to wrap things up before the winter break, so if you weren't one of the three already invited, I'd say your chances are slim. If either of the other two candidates are reading this I'd be very curious to know if anyone's been offered the job yet, and whether s/he plans to take it, but I guess people tend to play cards close to their chests until things are firmed up, as is understandable (I myself have been holding off saying anything, but now my curiosity is getting the better of me).

  • --I'm pretty sure it was offered to someone from CU Boulder. I was one of three candidates and wrote to the committee a few weeks ago to ask for an update. I was told my candidacy was no longer being considered, though not explicitly told that someone else had taken the job. Upon asking for feedback, however, I was told that other candidates had more experience and publication history, leading me to believe it was offered to someone. It is possible they scrapped the search, but that would seem very odd to me. (12/25)

Northwestern University - Assistant/Associate Professor, Modern Chinese Literature and Culture  - OFFER MADE[]

The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at Northwestern University seeks to appoint a full-time faculty member at the associate (tenured) or assistant (tenure track) level in modern Chinese literature and culture.

We welcome candidates who work across multiple genres and media from the modern to contemporary periods. The candidate will join three currently tenured faculty members in late imperial Chinese literature, modern Japanese literature, and contemporary Hindi literature respectively, and fourteen continuing lecturer faculty in the Chinese-, Hindi-, Japanese-, and Korean-languages in the newly-formed (Fall 2013) Department of Asian Languages and Cultures.

As a new member of a growing department, the candidate should bring excellence in research and teaching, as well as enthusiasm and creativity in developing undergraduate curricula, establishing departmental governance, and, at a future date, planning a competitive graduate program.

This search is proceeding in tandem with a search for a tenure-line position in Japanese literature at the rank of assistant professor. Randolph-Macon College (VA) - TT Assistant Professor of Chinese - POSITION FILLED[]

St. Olaf College (MN) - TT Asst. Prof, Chinese Language and Asian Studies - POSITION FILLED[]

The Department of Asian Studies at St. Olaf College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Chinese Language and Asian Studies, beginning fall 2014. Appointment is expected at the assistant professor rank, and salary is competitive.

Applicants are expected to have completed a Ph.D. in a relevant field by August 15, 2014. Native or near-native competence in Chinese and English, demonstrated strong teaching skills and scholarly promise are required. Use of technology in classroom teaching and familiarity with current language pedagogy are expected. Specialization in Chinese language and Asian Studies (including literature, second language acquisition or interdisciplinary approaches such as film studies and cultural studies) is required. Teaching responsibilities include all levels of Chinese language and at least one course in English that contributes to our Asian Studies major and the China Studies concentration. We seek someone who is eager to work with a growing Chinese language program at St. Olaf College.

In addition to serving as an excellent language teacher at all levels of Chinese, the ideal candidate is someone who is interested in regional and transnational approaches to Asian Studies, who can work collaboratively on projects with faculty in other languages and other disciplines, and who is prepared to teach one or two courses each year in English on topics of interest to our students. We seek someone who is willing to work to advance departmental projects on integrating language study and disciplinary/interdisciplinary study. The successful candidate for this position will be called upon to advise students on international study programs, internships and student research projects. A full-time teaching load is six courses per academic year on a 4-1-4 calendar.

  • Hi, some perspectives for this job. The last person in this job was D. Y. Du, who relocated to Hong Kong now. The last time this job was open in 2012 they wanted someone who both teach culture classes and language classes and direct the Chinese language program. Probably too heavy-weighted for a beginning position so this time around they seem to go for someone who got a Ph.D. in Chinese linguistics only? I also heard that one old professor on campus was very hostile to many candidates and that could also be a reason why someone left the current position. Given this information, I don't think there is an insider candidate...
  • But what about the VAP who is currently their "Interim Chair of Chinese Studies"? It seems like he is already doing the job they want this candidate to do. I would be surprised if he is not a candidate for this job.

But then, if you are a great fit and get invited to campus, chances are that sometimes the candidate is so amazing that it is POSSIBLE to beat the inside candidate. You never know.

  • Having an inside candidate does not preclude doing Skype and conference interviews, though maybe getting non-serious questions is a clue. I had a Skype interview for the complit position at Georgia wherein I was asked such hard-hitting questions as "Can you draw a Chinese character for us?" and "Do you like teaching Chinese?" and they turned out to have an inside candidate. My interview with Miami was better than that, but it is frustrating when you get the sense that a "search" committee has already found what they were looking for before they began searching. I understand they want to get a sense of what is out there, but still...
  • They focued primarily on research when giving me the interview, and apparently they prefer someone doing film and comtemporary Chinese liteature to other fileds (modern or linguistics). My interview was abnormally long, because they spent at least 10-15 minutes "telling" me all the requirements to get tenured and how wonderful the other newly-hired APs are, which sounded very daunting and kindda weird. I don't know if it is a strategy to scare away applicants.

Valparaiso University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor to begin August, 2014. Ph.D. and strong evidence of scholarship in Chinese studies and language are expected. The successful applicant will primarily teach in the graduate Master of Arts in Chinese Studies (MACS) program under the International Studies Department. The hire will be responsible for teaching language and culture classes for the residential MACS students, some of which will be cross-listed as upper-division undergraduate Chinese language classes. Specialization in either Chinese linguistics or Chinese literature from modern to pop culture is a plus. MACS also provides online instruction on teaching Chinese language and culture to K-12 Chinese language teachers. The hire should have experience and interest in using online approaches to pedagogy. University of Florida - Lecturer in Chinese Language and Culture[]

The University of Florida seeks a full-time Lecturer in Chinese Language and Culture to begin Fall 2014. Candidates must hold a M.A. or Ph.D. by time of appointment in one of these fields: Chinese linguistics, Chinese literature, or Chinese cultural / media studies. Native or near-native competence in Chinese and English is required. Training in pedagogy or second language acquisition and familiarity with new technologies (digital, distance, and computer-assisted learning) are preferred. Experience in teaching Chinese at an accredited U.S. institution of higher education is desirable. Teaching assignment: 3/3 in the Chinese track of a B.A. program in East Asian Languages and Literatures. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience, and includes a full benefits package. There are ample opportunities for professional development and promotion. Washington University in St. Louis - Postdoctoral Research Associate, Taiwan Literature[]

  • The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral teaching fellowship in late Qing through early 20th century Chinese literature and culture, with a preference for scholars specializing in Taiwan’s literary development during the colonial period. In addition to carrying on research in this area, the successful candidate will be asked to teach three courses each year, at least one of which should be an advanced course or seminar that focuses on the legacy of colonialism in Taiwan literature and culture in the greater East Asian context. Candidates should be able to demonstrate prior successful teaching experience and must have a Ph.D. in Chinese literature or related field prior to the start of the appointment. This position begins in January 2014, with the possibility of renewal for two additional years.
