Amherst College (MA) - TT Assistant Professor of Chinese Literature[]
The Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations seeks a specialist in Chinese literature for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning in July 2016. We seek candidates with expertise in modern or pre-modern Chinese literature, performing art, film, or popular culture. Those working across genres and media are especially encouraged to apply. Within the last decade, Amherst College has profoundly transformed its student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and nationality, among other areas. Today, nearly one-quarter of Amherst’s students are Pell Grant recipients; 43 percent of our students are domestic students of color. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion. The appointee will be expected to teach general courses that engage a broad range of students in Chinese culture and advanced courses for students concentrating in Chinese studies. The Department of East Asian Studies at Bucknell University invites applications for an open-rank, tenure-track faculty position to begin August 2016. We seek a teacher-scholar in the humanities (with the exception of history and religion) able to teach Chinese language at all levels in addition to courses in his/her area of specialization (applicants with expertise in art history, theatre, and/or visual culture are particularly encouraged to apply), and who is committed to integrating diversity issues into the curriculum. Candidates who will have a Ph.D. at the time employment begins, or who are ABD, will be considered. Chinese courses at UMBC, including those on literary topics, share a focus on culture and language in an intercultural framework. The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the University of New Hampshire invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in Chinese beginning Fall 2016. The successful candidate will have completed the Ph.D. by the time of employment (August 2016) and will have demonstrated a deep interest in undergraduate teaching, a vigorous and active commitment to scholarship, and a willingness to participate in the service obligations of the program, the department and the University. While the particular area of scholarship is open, the position requires a broad interest in classical and contemporary Chinese culture and society. Further requirements include: native or near-native command of Mandarin Chinese, with standard pronunciation, as well as of English; familiarity with both traditional and simplified Chinese characters; formal pedagogical training in foreign language instruction; and a record of outstanding and inspiring teaching at all levels of Chinese (particularly the fourth-year level) at an American college or university. he Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a tenured associate professor of late imperial Chinese culture (ca. 1271-1912). The search committee welcomes applications from specialists in any field, preferably with competencies in at least two of the following areas: literature (including poetry, prose, fiction, and drama), cultural studies, and relations between China and Inner Asia. The successful candidate should have broad research interests centered on primary sources and strong training in relevant languages. He or she will contribute to the Department’s undergraduate program by offering a one-semester lecture course on Chinese civilization and other broad-based lecture courses in addition to graduate offerings in his or her fields of expertise. A normal teaching load is 4 courses per year on a semester system. The Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures at the University of New Mexico invites applications for a Lecturer II position in East Asian Studies-Mandarin Chinese beginning in August 2016. The successful candidate will contribute to the pedagogical goals of a department seeking to develop further its new East Asian Studies major and to strengthen the teaching of critical languages. This Lecturer will work closely with existing faculty in Chinese and Japanese to teach courses in Chinese and the East Asian Studies program. The position will involve teaching a base load of twelve credits a semester. The successful candidate will develop and teach undergraduate beginning and intermediate courses in Chinese language that integrate exposure to East Asian cultures. High Point University invites applications for the position of Chair, Modern Foreign Language Department, beginning Fall 2016. The successful candidate will hold an earned doctorate in Chinese language, literature, culture or a related field, or Asian Studies with a concentration in Chinese (Mandarin) and will have the vision, skills, and experience to lead the department in expanding and developing the Chinese minor. The Modern Foreign Language Department currently offers majors in Spanish and French along with a minor program in Chinese, as well as additional course offerings in Italian, Portuguese, Arabic, Japanese, German, and Russian. The department also actively participates in the university’s Global Studies Program, the First Year Seminar Program, the International Business and International Relations majors, and the Latin American Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies minors.
