The Department of Asian Languages and Civilizations seeks a specialist in Chinese literature for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor beginning in July 2019. Within the last decade, Amherst College has profoundly transformed its student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, race, and nationality. College of William and Mary (VA) - TT Assistant Professor - Premodern Chinese Literature and Culture[]

The Department of Modern Languages & Literatures at William & Mary seeks applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in premodern Chinese literature and culture. This scholar would work primarily on Chinese literature and culture before the Qing period (1644–1911). The applicant is expected to establish and maintain an active research program.

Teaching expectation is two courses per semester. The successful candidate will possess the skills to teach current course offerings, such as Survey of Traditional Chinese Literature in English and Art of Chinese Poetry. He or she can develop new courses in the area of premodern Chinese literature and culture under the existing course titles, such as Freshman Seminar; Introduction to Chinese Cultural Studies; Topics (or Advanced Topics) in Chinese Language, Civilization, or Literature; and Advanced Seminar.  Candidates should also be able to teach courses in Mandarin Chinese at all levels as needed. Opportunities exist to contribute to our dynamic new general education curriculum ( and interdisciplinary programs such as Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies.

Required Qualifications: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Chinese or a related field at the time of appointment (August 10, 2019). Evidence of previous teaching experience, native or near-native fluency in Chinese and English, and a high level of proficiency in reading classical Chinese are required. Kalamazoo College (MI) - TT Asst. Professor of Chinese[]

Kalamazoo College seeks applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in Chinese language, literature, and culture beginning late August 2019. The successful candidate will join a growing East Asian Studies program, comprising specialists in Chinese language and literature, Asian History, Japanese language and literature, and Japanese language and sociolinguistics. Occidental College (CA) - TT Assistant Professor in Chinese and Chinese Studies[]

The Comparative Studies in Literature and Culture department at Occidental College seeks applicants for a full time, tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in Chinese and Chinese Studies. Applicants with degrees in either Chinese or Comparative Literature with a Chinese emphasis are encouraged to apply.

The recently established “CSLC” department has adopted an innovative liberal arts approach to the study of the so-called “lesser taught languages,” and we invite all candidates willing to contribute to the design of an undergraduate curriculum in Chinese that would complement this undertaking. Grounded in a student’s understanding of at least one foreign language, the department seeks to embed traditional language and literature instruction within a larger interdisciplinary and comparative context, one that highlights the role that the formal structures of language and literature play in the making (and unmaking) of those general horizons of intelligibility that help constitute a culture and a world.

We thus seek candidates who are interested in developing forms of language instruction that-- besides training students for the purposes of foreign language communication--will also actively prepare them for the task of literary and cultural interpretation. Regardless of their chosen areas of specialization, applicants should be capable of teaching courses in Chinese literature and culture (both in Chinese and translation) over a wide historical range, with particular sensitivity to the interconnection between authors, genres, and periods. Given the department’s comparative and theoretical emphases, we especially encourage applicants whose additional areas of expertise could facilitate connections between Chinese language and literature and the department’s wider curriculum. Such areas might include, but need not be limited to: poetic and narrative theory, hermeneutics, aesthetics, sub-specializations in the literary traditions of other languages, and/or other arts and sciences.

The successful applicant will be appointed in CSLC, but will also be affiliated with the interdisciplinary East Asian Studies program, and will therefore work with colleagues from several other departments (Politics, History, Art History, Religious Studies, Sociology, etc.), as well as other language faculty, in the expansion and development of Occidental’s Chinese language and literature curriculum. (Starting in 2019-2020, students pursuing the study of Chinese at Occidental will have the option of majoring in any one of three different areas: East Asian Studies, Chinese Studies, or CSLC with a Chinese concentration.)

The West Virginia University Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics ( invites applications for a faculty position in Chinese Studies beginning August 2019. Depending on qualifications and seniority, the appointment may be made at the advanced assistant professor level, at the tenured associate professor level, or higher. Applicants with exceptional qualifications will be nominated for the J. Vance & Florence Highland Johnson Professor in Chinese Studies. The successful candidate will have the following responsibilities: teaching Chinese language classes, content classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and potentially online classes; maintaining an active research agenda; and coordinating the Chinese studies program and graduate teaching assistants. This position, which is based on a nine-month contract, requires demonstrated excellence in university-level teaching with abilities in coordination and/or program administration; a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Chinese, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, or a closely related field; ability to maintain an active research program; and excellent communication skills in both English and Chinese.

The department offers M.A. degree programs in Spanish, Linguistics, and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), enrolling approximately 60-70 full-time graduate students from around the world, with the majority of those holding teaching assistantships. We also offer B.A.s and minors in a range of programs, including French, German, Spanish, Chinese Studies, Italian Studies, Latin American Studies, Russian Studies, and Slavic and East European Studies. The School of Modern Languages at The Georgia Institute of Technology ( invites applications for a Teaching Fellow in Chinese as part of its signature Global Languages, Cultures, and Technologies (GLACT) Postdoctoral Program, with a start date of August 1, 2019. This visiting faculty position is a full-time nine-month appointment with a 3/3 teaching load, and is renewable for up to three academic years. Fellows may teach one to two courses in the candidate’s area of research specialization and can apply for an annual course release in support of academic program development.

The successful candidate will have (1) a PhD conferred no later than the anticipated appointment start date of August 1, 2019 and not before August 1, 2014; (2) native or near native-level competence in Chinese; (3) an active scholarly agenda; and (4) documented evidence of successful teaching of the Chinese language, at both lower and upper levels, including content-based language courses. The Postdoctoral Program in Global Languages, Cultures, and Technologies

The GLACT Program fosters collaboration across languages, technologies, and global cultures. Candidates join a cohort of postdoctoral fellows across the languages represented in the School of Modern Languages and receive faculty mentorship to support their professional success. The GLACT program provides health and retirement benefits, a salary of $49,500 per academic year, and a $2,500 professional-development allocation per year. Summer instruction or academic program development appointments may be available. The School of Modern Languages will fund $1,500 toward relocation expenses.

Teaching and Curricular Development: GLACT fellows teach a range of undergraduate courses, with one to two courses possible in the candidate’s area of research specialization. The GLACT Program includes opportunities for curricular and program development in topics related to languages, cultures, and technologies, as well as potential instruction in connection with our signature summer study abroad programs Languages for Business and Technology (LBAT).   • Princeton University is pleased to announce the call for applications to the Fung Global Fellows Program at the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies (PIIRS). Each year the program selects six scholars from around the world to be in residence at Princeton for an academic year and to engage in research and discussion around a common theme. Candidates will be considered in three categories: (1) Four of the fellowships will be awarded to early-career scholars employed in the equivalent of tenure-track positions who are expected to return to their position. (2) One fellowship is set aside for a postdoctoral research associate who at the time of application does not have a tenure-track faculty appointment.   • During the academic year 2019-20, the Fung Global Fellows Program theme will be “Thinking Globally.” How people have thought about the planet has informed the institutions, norms, and policies that have pulled it together and torn it apart. For centuries, ideas of free trade, human rights or global governance have framed cooperation and competition, order and disorder. Such ideas have also spawned border-crossing movements, from campaigns to end slavery to commitments to reduce carbon emissions. In turn, global thinking and action have often reinforced commitments to national ideas and efforts to curb global exchange. The goal of this research theme is to explore how ideas framed the understanding of interests and the making of institutions that have yielded commonness and conflict across and within borders. We also want to understand how these ideas and practices came into being through scientific networks, foundations, and think tanks. The Program will also examine rival world ideas that have challenged prevailing orthodoxies. Nowadays, with cooperative norms under challenge, global institutions under stress, and a century of guiding ideas about global convergence in doubt, we want to take a broad look at where these ideas came from, their effects, and the prospects for intellectual renewal or rethinking. The goal of the 2019-20 Fung Global Fellows cohort will be to explore the ways people learned to rely on or to reject strangers far away, as well as to imagine how global relationships came to be and could be different. We welcome applicants from all disciplinary and inter-disciplinary fields from the sciences to the humanities whose work addresses this set of themes in any historical period or world region.

The successful candidate is expected to contribute significantly to the Chinese language program and teach language courses on all levels. The successful candidate should hold an MA in Chinese as a foreign language or in an allied field, possess native or near-native competence in Chinese and English, and have at least two years of Chinese language teaching experience at a North American institution of higher education.

Preference will be given to candidates who possess linguistic knowledge of the Chinese language and who demonstrate familiarity with current practices in Chinese pedagogy in North American higher education settings. Duties include teaching both recitations and lectures of language courses, as well as working closely with the language coordinator to contribute to the overall effectiveness of the Chinese language program. The Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Librarian [AMES Librarian] is a year-round (12 month) tenure track library faculty position responsible for the overall development, management and coordination of the George A. Smathers Libraries resources in all formats for these subject areas. The position supports the University’s academic programs including the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (LLC), as well as interdisciplinary programs supported by the University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, such as International Studies and the Center for Global Islamic Studies. Collaborates with other subject librarians to provide support in religious studies and other interdisciplinary areas. This position manages specialized subject area reference services, library instruction, and online database services.
