with a special focus on the „Production and Transfer of Knowledge."
At the Institute of Classical Studies the professorship belongs to a group of classical disciplines including Latin, Ancient History, Classical Archaeology, Medieval and Early Modern Latin and Didactics of Ancient Languages. At the same time it will be a core professorship of the Cluster of Excellence EXC 2150 „ROOTS - Social, Environmental and Cultural Connectivity in Past Societies" in the Excellence Strategy of the Federal and State Governments of Germany, especially Subcluster 3: Knowledge ROOTS: Innovation, Cognition and Technology (for further details see http://www.jma.uni-kiel.de/en/roots). As a professorship for Greek Literature with a special focus on the „Production and Transfer of Knowledge" it will strengthen the research agenda of the cluster of excellence and also be part of the teaching programs of Greek. At first, during the funding period of ROOTS, the new colleague will cooperate with the existing professorship of Greek (Prof. Dr. Lutz Käppel), after that they will be the only full professor of Greek in the department. Therefore the candidate has to cover the discipline of Classics/Greek as a whole with at least one research focus in Greek literature between Homer and Hellenistic literature. In addition to that a further research focus in the field of „Production and Transfer of Knowledge in classical cultures", especially Greece, is required.
Especially referring to the participation in the cluster of excellence, ROOTS, an expertise in one or more of the following research fields or methods is welcome:
theory and practice of production, conceptualization, operationalization and transfer of explicit and/or implicit knowledge in the medium of the ancient Greek written tradition
History of ancient Science
Text and material culture (Papyrology, Codocology etc.)
Comparative Studies (regional and diachronic, including concepts of ancient scientific literature, rhetoric etc.)
Research on the production and significance of knowledge between (natural) environment and cultural contexts will be central for the position within ROOTS.
Requirements: MA in Classics (or equivalent), a qualified pertinent PhD and additional research performance (Habilitation in Klassischer Philologie/Griechisch, Junior Professorship, or equivalent). English and German proficiency to conduct research, teaching, and administration. Experience in third party funding. Interest in participation in interdisciplinary research in the fields of humanities as well as natural and life sciences at CAU. Service in administrative committees.

College of the Holy Cross (USA:Mass) - Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Classics

The Department of Classics at the College of the Holy Cross invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment to begin in August 2020. Our new colleague will teach both Greek and Latin at all levels (beginning to advanced); develop courses in translations that serve the needs of our students; and contribute to our department’s cocurricular activities.  Our colleague will also contribute to one or more of these four areas of departmental emphasis: collaborative student research; diversification of the curriculum; outreach to audiences beyond Holy Cross; and exploration of new language pedagogies. The Department of Classics at Georgetown University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of Latin to begin in August 2020.

The teaching load is two courses per semester. The Department of Classical Studies invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in Greek language, literature, and culture at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 1, 2020. Candidates must have Ph.D. in Classical Studies or a related field in hand by the time of appointment. The Department offers an undergraduate major with concentrations in archaeology, language & literature, and civilization. The ability to teach ancient Greek and Latin at all levels is required. The Classics Program at the University of California, Davis invites applicants for a tenure-track faculty position, beginning July 1, 2020. Rank is assistant professor and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and expertise. Research specialization is open, and we are particularly interested in candidates whose research and teaching extend the boundaries of the field as traditionally conceived, for example by engaging with the reception of Classics in non-European contexts or with cultural encounters beyond the Mediterranean world. University of California, San Diego (USA:Ca) - Assistant Professor of Mediterranean Studies & Latin

The Department of Literature at the University of California, San Diego seeks to make a full-time, tenure track appointment of an Assistant Professor of Mediterranean Studies, with emphasis on Latin literature and culture. The candidate must have a PhD degree in Classics or related fields by time of appointment. The successful candidate will be both highly competent in the Latin language and will be able to demonstrate interest in and commitment to the comparativist study of the Roman Empire, and of relations among different regions and cultures across Africa, Europe, and Asia. We welcome applications from candidates specializing in either classical or late antiquity. Competence in another ancient language in addition to Latin, e.g. Syriac, Hebrew, Aramaic, an Anatolian language, Egyptian, Sanskrit or classical Chinese, is advantageous but is not required.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach Latin language courses at all levels - beginning, intermediate, and advanced - as well as more general thematic courses in which texts will be read in translation. The position is situated not in a traditional classics department, but in a multilingual Literature Department with faculty and students engaged in literary, comparatist, historical, and cultural studies. The candidate will also be expected to contribute to the interdisciplinary study of Mediterranean languages and cultures across the university. The successful applicant will also be affiliated with the Program in Classical Studies, which includes faculty from Literature, History, Philosophy, Visual Arts and Theater and Dance, and with the Center for Hellenic Studies. The Department of Classics at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for a tenure track position in Latin and ancient Greek language and literature at the level of Assistant Professor, to begin August 15, 2020. Evidence of a completed Ph.D. in Classics is required by May 1, 2020. Candidates must demonstrate, through their writing sample or published work, capacity for high-quality scholarly research in Latin and/or ancient Greek language and literature. The Faculty of Classics seek to appoint a Senior Instructor in Ancient Greek and Latin. The role is responsible for planning and delivering Greek and Latin language teaching within the Faculty under the direction of the Grocyn Lector, including marking work, participating in examinations, with administrative duties. The Senior Instructor role has additional regular duties supporting the Grocyn Lector in the administrative and organisational tasks connected with the language teaching delivery and the management of the language teaching. 

The postholder is expected to teach graduates and undergraduates, both beginners and advanced students, to develop and extend grammatical mastery, vocabulary, reading/declaming, scansion, translation from the language, translation into the language and linguistic analysis of texts as required by the Faculty (an average of 300 hours in term time pro rata) and to assist with admissions, examining and administration of the language provision with the Faculty. 

The successful candidate will have: experience of outstanding competence in specialist language teaching in Greek and Latin for graduates and undergraduates, admissions and examinations and course development. 

This role will not attract sufficient points to obtain a sponsored tier 2 visa under the points based immigration system, however applications are welcome from candidates who don't currently have the right to work in the UK, but who would be eligible to obtain a visa via another route

The Department of Classics at the University of Washington has been authorized to make a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in Classics. Candidates will be expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate level and engage in research that could include the following: Greek drama, race and ethnicity in the ancient Mediterranean world, and digital humanities. The successful applicant will mentor students and teach a wide variety of courses at all levels of our undergraduate and graduate programs, both in Greek and Latin and in translation. The School of History and Heritage forms part of the College of Arts, the largest College in the University, and is located at the University’s main Brayford campus beside a natural pool in the River Witham. The School wishes to appoint a Classicist to the position of Lecturer in Classical Studies (Greek Culture). Prospective applicants should specialise in Greek literature and language, with a proven ability to teach across a wide range of Classics modules, including Greek and Roman history and Latin.

This is a teaching-focussed role fixed-term for two years. The successful candidate will gain valuable experience of planning and delivering first- and second-year modules to students in both the BA (Hons) Classical Studies and BA (Hons) History degree programmes, and will be join a teaching team with expertise in ancient, late antique, and medieval history and archaeology.

S/he will coordinate and teach first-year modules on the culture and history of the Greek world, Greek and Latin literature, and introductory Latin; and second-year modules on the Hellenistic world and intermediate Latin. S/he may also be asked to teach in other areas of Classical culture or history as required, at first-, second-, or third-year level, and will be expected to contribute to Open Days and other recruitment activities.

Lincoln launched its BA (Hons) in Classical Studies in September 2018, and will be welcoming its second cohort of students in September 2019. First-year students receive a solid grounding in the art, archaeology, history, and literature of the Greek and Roman worlds, in addition to a full year’s tuition in the Latin language. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to contribute to the development of the degree programme at its upper levels.

For a second year in a row, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Centre for Hellenic Studies (SNF CHS) at Simon Fraser University invites applications for a one-year Post-doctoral Fellowship focused on Hellenisms Past and Present, Local and Global. Our search committee welcomes proposals that span disciplinary boundaries from candidates working on comparative approaches to the advertised fellowship theme. Applicants from all fields of the humanities and the social sciences are encouraged to apply. Situated atop Burnaby Mountain, east of downtown Vancouver, the Centre is a major site for Hellenic Studies in North America. Affiliated faculty have expertise in Ancient, Byzantine, Early Modern and Modern Greek history, archaeology, literature and language.

The successful applicant will join the faculty and students who make up our intellectual community and participate in the Centre’s day-to-day activities. In this context, they will take an active part in the SNF CHS seminar series, offering two formal talks on campus. The SNF CHS Post-doctoral Fellow will also offer one talk for a lay audience as part of the Centre’s community outreach activities. While at SFU, the SNF CHS Post-Doctoral Fellow will have opportunities to engage with the content development activities of the SNF New Media Lab.
