--Follow up Q: Does anyone know if the recruiting dept at UCSD has to activate the recommendation letter request? I'm in the same boat: status reads "letter not requested" but I thought letters were automatically requested by the application system. If the dept has to take action that would both explain long delay between app deadline and website update as well as explain why some people's status never changes from "letter not requested"--i.e., those folks didn't make the next cut. Anyone know?

Certainly. That should be said/assumed for many of the NCA interviews. I think the point is that they seem to have gone through the selection process for at least the first cut. They met with candidates but not ALL candidates.

==Questions/Comments ==

*Has the position been offered at '''Michigan Technological University'''??

*Have you heard anything about '''Northwestern (Media, Technology & Society)?'''--Receipt of materials letter and very specific mention of no preliminary decisions until early to mid December and for candidates to remain patient. When did you receive your letter?

''Thank you !''

I received my letter around the second week of november

Rejection letter received, dated 12/11/2008. Was it an e-mail rejection letter or a regular letter sent via snail mail? -snail mail.

*Anyone hear anything from '''University of''' '''South Carolina (Mass Communication)?'''

-Yes. Rejection letter received 12/5

- Also received a rejection letter dated Dec 11 in the mail on Dec 18.

*How about '''Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada'''?

Invu scheduled, 12/12

Really? Hmmmm. Is it on-campus interview at Carleton or phone interview?

*Have you heard from '''SUNY Albany (Communication Studies)?'''

**They did phone interviews in October. No word beyond that.

Got an e-mail rejection letter today (Dec 18)

*How about '''School of Journalism, Indiana University at Bloomington'''?

Receipt of materials

*Any update on the situation at '''Ohio State U (Communication Technology)?'''

*Those of you who have received calls for interviews, has the status of your online applications changed? Does it still say "in progress"?

Yes, it does say 'in progress' despite the fact that I have received a rejection letter in the mail.

*Anybody hear anything from '''Hofstra'''?

**Hofstra is doing NCA interviews on Sunday, November 23.

**Phone interview on 12/12

**Received letter saying the search was on hold last week (1-21-09)

*Has anyone heard anything about the three '''Middle Tennessee State University''' positions? Are they interviewing at NCA?

**MTSU is arranging phone interviews for the 2 weeks post-NCA. Emails were sent on 11/14.

*How about '''Butler''' University?

**Butler sent out an email 11/19 offering to do informal meetings at NCA, saying they weren't ready to do formal interviews.

*'''U Nebraska Lincoln'''?

**Emails for NCA interviews went out in the evening 11/15.

*'''Northeastern'''? I know that their search is going to be extended until December.

**Northeastern (Boston) rhetoric is doing NCA interviews as of an email 11/15.

**On-campus interviews completed.

*And '''Ohio State U''' - Communication Technology? Any shortlist yet? Rejection letter? Or Interview?

*Anyone hear anything from the '''University of North Texas''' ''after NCA''?

**Yes. They're reviewing files. No definitive dates or anything, though as of 12/2.

*Any news about '''Ohio State U'''- Political communication?

**I have an on-campus interview for the OSU social influence position. (There was no first round interview.) The chair mentioned that they have five open searches (he said this last Sunday, 11/16) and it is hard to schedule everyone. That may be a reason for the delay on the other positions. Anyway, the good news is it appears that they still exist.

*Any word on the '''Michigan''' jobs?

**i am also curious about Michigan job (political communication)

***Search over in Michigan. Somebody got a job.

*Any news re: '''Memphis''' or '''Texas-Austin'''?

Austin- e-mail saying that i didn't make the cut

*The "communication and humanities" position at Texas-Austin has been filled.

*The University of Memphis position has NOT been filled -- the provost's office sent an email today apologizing for a system glitch. Memphis is still reviewing applications.

**campus interviews were conducted at Memphis in November (3 candidates)

***Memphis position was filled mid-Dec. 08

*Any news on University of Colorado (Boulder)'s org com job?

*Any news on the SDSU job? (Do you mean San Diego or South Dakota?)

*Any word on the '''University of San Francisco''' or '''Seattle University''' jobs?

**USF job frozen (email 11/18) -- Is the Interpersonal/Social Interaction job rozen, or just the Public Speaking job? The email I received implied that the department, because of their "current financial status" was pulling all position ads.

**Seattle U is doing on campus interviews.

*Any news from '''Merrimack College'''?(held interviews at NCA)

*Anyone have the scoop on the '''Texas A&M''' joint comm/wst position?

**From what I understand, they did interviews at NCA and are doing more at MLA; so don't expect to hear anything before the 1st of the new year.

*Any news from '''Dominican''' post-NCA?

**They are doing phone interviews with people they did not get to meet at NCA and expect to contact people by Christmas

**Did that Dominican info come through in an email?

**'''Texas Christian''' PR job

**'''UTSA (Texas, San Antonio)'''

*Any news on the Cal State Chico job?

**Some phone interviews were done before NCA, on-campus interviews are being done 12/4-12/12

*Does anyone have any information on the '''Denison University''' job? It isn't even on the list. Anyone know if it has been canceled? ''Denison is currently holding on-campus interviews for their intercultural position, and then I think they are planning to begin reviewing the media studies position after that.''

*Does anyone have any information on the '''Catholic University''' job?

*Has anyone heard anything further from the '''SUNY New Paltz''' (electronic media) search?

*Any updates from '''Franklin Pierce''' beyond the phone interview?

**I had a phone interview on Nov 24, 2008. They said they'd be in touch within a week or so and called my references... never heard from again.

*Any updates on '''UC San Diego''' Communication and the Person?

One of my letter writers told me they requested a letter (1/22); also shown if you log back into application. How many candidates are on this long list?? Hmm...I logged onto my app and the status column for the letters is now blank where previously it said "letter not yet requested"- should I infer anything from this?

*Any updates on '''Texas A&M''' (int'l comm/global media & systems)?

*Has anyone heard from '''Pace University''' (communication studies)? - Phone interview 12/9.

**Pace-Received letter postmarked 12/16 "We will begin reviewing applications immediately."

*Any news on '''Mount Union College''' in Alliance Ohio?

*FYI, an IP address of 98.226.113.228 (traceable to Muncie, IN) '''deleted the entire "Position Offered" category today''', along with the one posting noting that the position at Ball State (in Muncie, IN) had been offered. Let's be alert for this kind of questionable editing as the job searches move forward. The wiki is here to help all candidates have a better sense of how the market is playing out, and the free flow of information between anonymous candidates makes that possible.

--This was an accident (deleting the category). I meant to delete the BSU job offer information because it was posted without my knowledge and, subsequently, turned down. Apologies for any confusion or problems this may have caused.

**What is a good source for Visiting Faculty posts? A lot of schools will be seeing increased enrollment next year and despite the hiring freeze, will need people to staff these positions. Or are most classes likely to be staffed with adjuncts? Many new PhDs I know (and ABDs for that matter) are striking out this year, and folks are starting to get panicked. Advice?

***I think you just need to keep your eyes peeled on CRTNET, professional organization (NCA/ICA) job sites, and multidisciplinary lists like the Chronicle Jobs list and HNet. Aside from that, word of mouth is the only other way you'll hear.

***Thanks for the reply. When do these positions typically get announced? I know fall course schedules are being drafted now, is it usually in the aftermath of this process?

***It depends. If the past is any indication (and who knows ... it may not be given the economy is in the tank), folks will start announcing now and continue doing so until a month before Fall term starts. It's so dependent on the budget, needs, etc. of each school that it's hard to identify a single time when those go up. Often, though, the TT searches need to be resolved first because lateral moves create vacancies.

**I am inquiring as to whether people would feel comfortable posting salary information in relation to positions (offers and/or acceptances). I think that a lack of clear information on salaries disadvantages candidates during the negotiation process. Alternately, we could set up a separate wiki if that information would complicate this page. Feel free to respond here or on the discussion tab.

***In a "normal" year, this would only have limited utility given the vast differences between schools, geographic regions, etc. In an economy like this, ask for as much as you can without being offensive and hope for the best. The AAUP faculty salary survey has data for average pay by rank from the prior year for just about every school out there. I find that the starting salary average is 8-16% lower than the average assistant professor salary, depending on various factors (pubs, specialty, size of school, etc.). I'm really just not sure that having anonymized data about offers this year would be anymore helpful than the above information. That's just my $.02, though.

***I agree that anonymous data may not help much, given the multiple variables at play. But all state university salaries are public information, and several states (e.g: Michigan, Mass., Illinois) have their data in searchable databases online, so go searching on Google, and you should be able to find specific salaries of people hired last year or the year before in state universities. The Chronicle also lists average salaries in their Tools link in the Careers section (though you should expect to get less than the average at schools with law or business schools).

***I hesitate in posting this link b/c it's the project of a right-wing group that clearly believes state employee salaries are too high, but for those trying to assess their worth in negotiating salaries, this gives the salary for all NYS employees, including CUNY and SUNY: [[http://www.seethroughny.net/|http://www.seethroughny.net/]]

'''2/16/09''': It seems as if the updates here have about trickled to a halt during the past week or so. Either no news is good news, or perhaps we've reached the point where decisions are about to be made and the floodgates will soon be unleashed. Best of luck to all in this abysmally grim market cycle. Please update when you can so others can plan, celebrate, or grieve accordingly ;)

'''2/16/09: Any update on the position of Assistant Prof at Temple University (Broadcasting, Telecom & Mass Media). The application deadline passed on Feb.1 '''After much ado about my late application (lost by the damned post office! thankfully it was eventually found), I worked up the nerve to email the SCC, he responded literally within minutes saying that the few days lateness wouldn't be a problem - it didn't seem like they were rushing through the apps so it might be a while.

'''2/21/09''': I want to echo the poster and request that anyone who knows anything about the positions listed as open update them. I don't know if Feb is typically a radio silence month in this process, but several searches have ceased communication altogether.

*Any news on the '''St. Mary's''' search? Heard a rumor they might be mobilizing for campus interviews, but can't get a real confirmation on that. If the wiki is any indication, the search looks like it's been inactive since they did NCA interviews.

3/4/09: Note that fzybot edited the page today to redirect to academicjobs.wikia com and this action seemingly cannot be undone. In the move, it appears as if all page edits since 2/26 were lost.

'''3/4/09: '''Any news about  '''Emerson College'''?:  As of 3/6, they are reviewing applications and plan on contacting people within the next two weeks.

'''3/6/09:  Any news about UW Plattville, UW Whitewater, Rollins College, SIU Edwardsville, or Edgewood?'''

3/7/09: Did anyone apply for the UNC Greensboro Assistant Director of the Speaking Center/Lectureship position?<br />'''3/11/09:'''   Anything on the Queens College Media Historian position?  Thx...

'''3/13/09''': Any word on the '''Sonoma State''' lecturer position?

3/17/09: Any news on the '''Metropolitan State College '''(Denver CO) position?

3/17/09: Has anyone heard anything about the '''Pine Manor College '''or '''Fisher College '''(both in/near Boston MA) positions?

3/17/09: Speaking of Boston, does anyone know if Boston University ever made a hire? (Their application deadline was way back in October, but I never heard anything...) Thanks.

  • University of Denver (relational/family)
  • University of Wisconsin-Superior (Mass Comm Generalist)

Requested More Information[]

  • Catholic University (10/12)
  • Marquette (letters of recommendation)
  • Texas State University, San Marcos (letter rec'd 9/16)
  • Texas State University, San Marcos (Letter rec'd 10/14)
  • UC San Diego (Communication and the Person) Letters of recommendation (1/22)- how did you find this out? My electronic app still says "letter not requested" even though they said letter requests were automatic upon submission of the application...

A: One of my letter writers told me, and then I confirmed by chkng the online application. (2/2)

--I was told not to read anything into the letter requested/not requested status. Haven't seen where they've scheduled phone/on campus interviews, so maybe we're all still in the game.

-- what is the norm in Communication? to ask for all letters or, like in anthropology, to only ask the long-list? why was someone advised not to read too much into some people being asked, and other not. Seems like a long=list cut to me!

--on campus scheduled 2/6

  • NCA gossip reports that Vanderbilt is doing interviews at NCA, although emails suggest that applications will not be reviewed until 1/1/09
*I would not trust this gossip.* -- why?
     Vandy did interviews at NCA
As I understand it, they did not do "interviews" at all, but the most preliminary of informal, non-committal conversations
with some members of the applicant pool who were unknown to them. These are clearly not interviews in the traditional sense
and probably should not be interpreted as such.
Certainly. That should be said/assumed for many of the NCA interviews. I think the point is that they seem to have gone through the selection process for at least the first cut. They met with candidates but not ALL candidates.
  • Saginaw Valley State University
