• Degree(s) from a highly ranked institution on U.S. News and World Report rankings factors favorably into hire decisions (questionable how exactly this works)..
• Wow, this is pretty disturbing and seems highly elitist, especially considering these rankings are contested and they do not indicate one's potential as a faculty member. Not a good sign, I think.

• Not to mention the fact that grads of CNU or comparable institutions would not qualify to work at CNU!
• Excellent point!!
• (11-2-2010): A highly ranked degree might factor into employment consideration, but take a look at the faculty profile page: http://www.cnu.edu/communications/profiles/index.asp. Not exactly a collection of Ivy leaguers or top notch talent, at least judging by the same standards being imposed for hiring new faculty. I've also known people who have interviewed for CNU, one was even hired, and the school will take, at least in terms of the quality of applicants made available, whatever they can get. The article might be disturbing to some, but it's basically a marketing strategy to make CNU seem more important, prestigious, etc., than it actually is.
• (12-20-2010) On this thread, I guess I can be glad to report that, despite some fancy degrees, I have not heard anything. The elite factor, thankfully, cannot be a standalone determinant.

• Has anyone read their mission statement that the call asks you to respond to in your cover letter? It seems really militant about enforcing a particular way of thinking, and I'm not convinced they offer an environment where one could feel safe about exercising their academic freedom if they disagree with the mission statement's peculiar spin on understanding diversity and social relations. Some key text:

• • "The College values the merit of each unique individual, rather than succumbing to the dehumanizing, discriminatory trend of so called "social justice" and "multicultural diversity," which judges individuals not as individuals, but as member of a group and which pits one group against other competing groups in divisive power struggles."
  • I chose not to apply because of this. I felt the same way about the mission statement; it seemed to conflict with my values intractably. Seems like a good job for someone who holds these politics.
  • I had a similar response to this portion of the mission statement. My initial sense was that this phrasing might have come from a feeling of being embattled as a conservative institution rather than an active opposition to diversity (it's worth looking in to the history of the institution on this point). Also, I consulted a somewhat recent alumnus of the school, who indicated that the school was not actively opposed to diversity in practice but actually had a relatively varied group of students. Even so, it seems like applicants for this position should be comfortable operating in a conservative environment.

Question: Is it legal to require someone to be an active Christian to be a "successful candidate" for a job?

• Yes, if it's a private university, then religious requirements of faculty are legal. I was told by a senior faculty member that, if I was unclear about what this meant, to e-mail search chairs asking them to explain further what "actively involved" entailed. For some Christian schools you have to sign a faith pledge of sorts, while for others you don't, etc.

• I've heard that this means that you have to sign an agreement that you will instill Christian beliefs about the origin of humanity - i.e. evolution.

• Do you mean creationism? How, exactly, would one teach creationism in a comm job?

• If your understanding of Christianity is limited to creationism you're probably not right for this job.

• My personal understanding of Christianity is by no means limited to creationism. I was simply looking for clarification of a statement made by above poster: '"I've heard that this means that you have to sign an agreement that you will instill Christian beliefs about the origin of humanity - i.e. evolution." This sentence makes no sense to me; I was wondering if they meant to say creationism instead of evolution.

• It is not uncommon for a pledge signature. Many state schools require a pledge to uphold the state's constitution. It doesn't mean much. If you aren't right for the job, they will find reasons other than your signature on an oath.

• This position specifically asks for "A statement indicating how the candidate will support the Christian mission of the University (http://seaver.pepperdine.edu/about/mission/)" (which is why I'm personally not applying).

• A colleague received a phone call 10/24 (Sunday, seriously?) evening. I guess PSU is trying to be as proactive as possible, which is a good thing. Always better to be informed than not!
• They narrowed the 400 aps down to about 20. They already did first round phone interviews last week.
• This position requires the job recipient to position themselves to secure external funding. Actual acquisition is probably not required for tenure, but a solid application probably is.
  • That is not true, and I am thinking you are the one who erased the discussion. I know someone who got an offer in this department that required external funding to gain tenure. I am sure a solid application is necessary, but so is external funding. DON'T ERASE CONVERSATIONS AGAIN.
• Please note that the person who wrote the above bullet point curiously erased two comments and edited at least two others which criticized the outside funding requirement. And the lame dig about a "solid application" was really not necessary. As this was very obviously the work of a PSU SC member, I'm now counting my blessings not to have been on its short list. Unbelievable.
  • I agree. It is unbelievable. If you don't want to read things, don't read them. This wiki site is not for people to police and erase. These are important issues to talk about.
  • I also agree with people protesting the erasure of comments. Search committees obviously have a lot of power during this difficult job market - making snarky comments about "solid applications" is not very gracious. The person who erased criticisms about requiring applicants to commit to securing external funding is not willing to accept the fact that applicants have the right to make note of (and critique) the hoops applicants are made to jump through to get a job.

(Well, pardon a non-academic moment, but that just sucks.) That's really lame and confusing. To me, it sounds like departmental/school politics-like they had to write the position two ways to satisfy various' individuals particular desires and demands.

• I believe that positions 1 & 2 are the same -- there's one position with two possible ways that it will be filled. (The ad doesn't say that there are two positions.)
• Ah, I hadn't considered that the advertisement was for only one position. One could certainly read it both ways. The only reason I am inclined to think there may be two positions is because the two fields are so dramatically different: the former specifies digital media with preference for Asian American studies scholars; the latter is more open-ended. After all, it seems like overkill to call for an Asian American digital media scholar on the one hand and then call for an open-ended race scholar when the former could address the latter.
• Received request for additional publications from department chair (11/22) (X3). Do you happen to know if this request indicates a second level of long/short list, or is it unrelated? Were phone interviews mentioned in the request email? Yes, request was accompanied by notice of short/short list. Interviews not mentioned in request.
• Did those of you notified of the short/short list apply to position one, position two, or both/either? I was notified of short list and only applied for position two. I only applied for consideration for the second position (if, in fact, it is a second position).
• I applied for both, was on the long/short list, and received a rejection letter today (12/4)
• There is only ONE position available!!! They are looking for someone for digital/networked media and/or race/ethnicity. (12/8) I wonder how much politics was involved in the writing and posting of these job ads. Why did they have to list two positions, and write the calls in a way that made it ambiguous as to whether there were one or two jobs??? Would have been simple enough to collapse 'the two postings into one description.
• I interview in UC-San diego a few yrs back--Communication. Felt very badly treated--they did not even have a place/space for the candidate to wait in, between meetings etc...Nor did they take candidate to visit Dean. Faculty were unfriendly and uppity ....Don't know about other departments but from what I have heard, UC-Sd is not very collegial
• I also interviewed there a few years ago and had the opposite experience. It's a long interview process, 1-on-1 interviews with individual faculty instead of group interviews, which makes for a long couple of days. Most of the faculty I met with were friendly, they all come from different disciplines so I'm sure there are internal factions. Grad students were intense, clearly play a role in dept business. I left the visit exhausted but also feeling like they'd read my work and had much to say about it. I also met with some faculty from other depts, got the feeling it was a very interdisciplinary place.
• Any updates about campus visits? (12/12) Scheduling for late January and early February.
• For the person who posted the above update about scheduling (or anyone who knows), have phone interviews already been conducted? No phone interviews to my knowledge. I believe they skipped them and just created a campus visit short list.
• Alright, one more question for the person above with the insider knowledge (thanks, by the way): Any knowledge of whether or not the finalists have been contacted? Just asking because I was on the short-short list of folks asked to submit publications, yet I haven't received word one way or the other since then.

• Good link, but are you sure this is accurate? If the deadline was 10/8, that's quite a quick turnaround to do all phone interviews and such by 10/19. ----I'm not sure about UGA's process, but in my experience on the job market last year, several R-1 universities did not do phone/NCA interviews and instead went straight to on-campus invites. I wonder if this is the case because qualifications for an R-1 position are generally a lot more narrow, such as the need for the candidate to have top pubs and a research specialty. Personally, coming from an R-1 myself I haven't heard of this. We always do NCA or phone interviews, and the other R-1 that I know is already doing on-campus interviews in the next few weeks did a round of phone interviews too. But, alas, the proof is in the pudding. Congrats to those interviewing at UGA, and best of luck as the process moves forward!

• Or, "serious" applicants would also have other deadlines, and may have believed that deadlines are deadlines. I wonder if the University's EEOC office knows that "serious applicants" somehow "knew" to disregard the deadline.
• From the comment above it doesn't look like the deadline was disregarded. Plus, a "serious" candidate wouldn't wait until the last minute to send in materials.
• There are all sorts of good reasons why a "serious" candidate might wait to the last minute: scheduling a defense, waiting on acceptance of a conference paper, waiting to submit or receive publication information on an article, etc.--all of which fairly seriously affect the strength of a candidate's application. If a SC posts a deadline, it should be adhered to. If they have no intention of doing so, don't put a deadline and instead denote that the search is immediate and ongoing (as many are). Moreover, a deadline implies that this is set so that members of the SC can form their own schedules and go through a process together on deciding on candidates. SC's which do not adhere to a deadline may not be following proper protocols, including the input of the full committee. We could therefore just as easily say that committees which don't adhere to deadlines are not "serious." (x3!)
• A friend of mine has an on campus interview scheduled for January.
• Do people not realize that search committees start looking at files before the deadlines especially when there are lots of candidates? (x1!)
• I think people do realize this, and this it's perfectly appropriate for SC's to go through applications as they receive them in order to sort them into piles and make a shortlist. But contacting people on that shortlist before the deadline seems to me to be highly unfair to the other candidates if there's a posted deadline. (x2! And, unfortunately, this seems to be happening more often... see comments about one of the Wisconson-Madison jobs this year)
• Oftentimes it's perfectly acceptable for committees to review applications and contact candidates before a deadline. They just can't extend an offer before the deadline. So the lesson, for better or worse, is to get your materials in as quickly as possible. (x2!!)
