  • Updates:
    • Any updates for this position? Has anyone received Zoom invites?
    • No update on my end (email or portal) - 10/15
    • 10/16: No update on this end either. Wonder if they are taking unusually long or if the people invited just aren't on/active here 🤷🏽
    • 10/16: I wouldn't expect to hear anything for awhile; if the initial submission was just a CL and CV, sure, a month is reasonable, but they also asked for letters and a writing sample and that takes more than a month to "read" and sort through.
    • Thanks to those who posted above, I also haven't heard anything. (10/17).
    • Has anyone heard about American University's Culture and Technology position? Deadline was 9/20.
      • have not heard anything (10/16)
    • Still no update on this? (10/28)
    • What is the protocol to inquire about the timeline of the process? Many universities don't even ever send a rejection letter! Is it ok to write to them and ask where they are with the process?
      • It's definitely ok to ask, there's no harm in doing so. Just be short and polite, and email the search chair if you know who that is.
      • Were you able to reach out to ask? I was thinking of doing the same!
      • I tried looking for the job advertisement to find contact information but the job link is unavailable at the moment. :( I don't know whom to contact.
      • For the person who was looking, Prof. Dustin Friedman was the point of contact for this particular job!
      • I emailed the coordinator listed on the job post, who referred me to Max Keenan, the coordinator for College of Arts and Sciences. I sent an email 10/31, I'll update if I hear back
        • 11/8 received this reply: Thank you for reaching out about this. I just checked with our Department of Literature, and they have begun reviewing applications. You will be contacted directly if an interview is requested, or you will be notified when the search has closed.
    • Still no update (10/28). The job posting has been removed from the website, but my applications hows as "in progress" on WorkDay
    • 10/30 - my references received requests to submit their letters of recommendation <-- Do they already request letters when submitting application? <— yes, letters were due with initial application (i recall bc one of my recommenders was late). Maybe the other poster accidentally commented under the wrong job?
      • I remember that we had to submit names & contact info for references with the application, but one of my references forwarded me the email they got requesting a LoR yesterday (10/30) to be submitted by 11/13. Could be that this was just a reminder email, but good to know that they're looking to review letters of rec by 11/13!
      • If this is accurate, it would mean that there'd be almost two months between submission deadline and them beginning review of full files, which is... kinda wild! (ps: idk why user 98.230.75.238 deleted my comment. this is a fandom, my dude. and pointing out this delay is relevant to folks who're waiting on the search, and who, if this is correct, will be waiting until mid-december for a first round cut.)

  • Updates:
    • Has anyone heard from Creighton yet? 10/24
      • Nothing here. But I did hear a rumor that they possibly already had someone in mind. Which would be particularly annoying since they requested rec letters with the application. (I get that sometimes you have to post the job but if that's the case, don't waste letter writers' time, too) 10/25
      • That is so shitty. I had to ask people to write letters at a days notice. I don't know why hiring committees do this.
      • If that's the case, it only suggests that this is not a valid school at all—already had someone in mind but intentionally requested letters from other candidates to create an appearance of fairness
    • Not sure if this is helpful -- I interviewed early October. Haven't heard back (11/3), but they said it would be a few weeks for an update. I am not affiliated / don't have relationships with anyone at the school.

    • 10-22 - For the Loyola Marymount position in Strategic Rhetorical Studies: Why do you think they felt the need to send that email to applicants with an updated job call and asking for edits to materials AFTER the deadline? Are you actually going to update your materials? I might be alone in thinking this, but if the applicant pool is not what they expected that is on them. They should request specifics in the materials for semi-finalists (since they already said they'd be requesting extra documents at that point), rather than sending all applicants into a panic.

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Amsterdam, Netherlands) - Full Professor of Media and Culture with focus on media and environment (Deadline 07/14/24)

  • Job description: The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam seeks a distinguished scholar for a full professorship in Media and Culture (1.0 FTE) with particular focus on media and the environment. Far-reaching changes to traditional media-industrial structures and media culture’s unprecedented enmeshment with politics and the living world demand new modes of inquiry and a rethinking of received conceptual categories. We offer the opportunity to lead a motivated team, closely cooperate with colleagues from other chair-groups of the Art & Culture cluster and beyond, and be part of a vibrant, friendly and interdisciplinary community. Teaching within our BA, MA, and RMA programmes is systematically research-driven and focuses on media and culture, media aesthetics, media and the environment, the interstices between media, art, architecture, and design, the influence of digitisation processes on media and cultural theory and history, and new developments in media production, distribution and exhibition. We are looking for a colleague with a strong research agenda and a clear vision on the future of media studies. In particular, we welcome candidates with innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to the critical, theoretical or historical study of: media infrastructure and (audiovisual) media technology; archives, memory and historiography; materiality, eco-media and sustainability; data, platforms and politics; tech industries and governance, or more-than-human entanglements of media, politics and aesthetics. Close affinities with the study of art, design, architecture or visual and material culture are an asset.

Word on the Street

  • This system seemed to be getting super cluttered. I went through and moved info up to their respective calls. I went and added abridged headings for the others.
  • I don't think it ever made it on here. But Zoom Interviews for the Public Speaking VAP job at Alabama are occurring on 11/15.

General Query

  • What is the average timeline after the deadline? I know it differs based on universities and hiring committee but what is the overall experience with hiring timelines for tenure-track jobs in the field of media, communication and journalism? TIA
    • It definitely differs a lot, but I think generally Zoom interviews are scheduled within 2-3 weeks after the deadline, then those might go on for a couple weeks. Then, they would schedule on-campuses a couple weeks out. My guess is the quickest turnarounds would be a month and a half after the deadline, but can easily stretch out to 2-4 months (especially getting closer to winter break)
  • Should we expect to receive explicit rejection letters at all, or does ghosting for 3+ weeks essentially = a rejection? TIA
    • Been on the market on and off since 2017-- most of the time (maybe 80% of the time?) you're just ghosted.
    • I was a finalist for a position at Cal State LA back in 2021/22 and still haven't heard back....lol. It can be demoralizing to put in all the effort of applying to jobs, asking for letters of recommendation, interviewing multiple times, and not to hear back. Given this can happen, it's important to develop practices for mental heath resilience. For example, when your mind starts running through all the scenarios why you haven't heard back, take a walk. When you do hear back with a rejection, journal. When your under-qualified jerk of a colleague gets a job before you, spend time with loved ones. Try not to take your frustration out on your partner/friends/family -- and definitely try not to internalize the rejection. The job market doesn't make sense. Don't try to make sense of it. Protect your mental health.
  • I'm seeing people receive both interview requests AND rejections for a job that I applied for and about which I have received literally no communication either way (the website still says "under review" when I check my application). Is it normal to just...ghost some people? Does this mean I'm still in consideration even though people received zoom invites last week (if the updates so far have been truthful)? Should I be reaching out to the chair of the search committee to find out what happened? Thanks for any insights in advance!
    • It probably just means you are kept in a waitlist. If they didn't end up liking anyone they interviewed then they might dip into the waitlist pool. But I would just leave it be because they most likely will find someone from their pool. It's also not worthy of your time and energy to be stressed about that. Like the posts above ghosting is very normal. If a school wants to know more about you they will reach out!
  • Where did the Muhlenberg listing go? It had a deadline of 10/18. I'm curious if anyone has heard from them yet.
    • I added it again. Do you think it's possible the search was called off?
  • Fellow folks, how do you manage your mental health while on the job market? For example, you have interviewed with multiple positions, and no one invited you for a campus visit. How to deal with the frustration.
    • Things are never as good or as bad as they seem. I have friends from grad school who thought their lives were effectively over after failing to get a TT job. Now they make twice as much as me doing intellectually fulfilling work while living in high-quality locations. Hang in there, and remember that you have value as a scholar and as an intellectual even if the TT market doesn't recognize it.
    • May I ask what kind of work they’re doing? (Industries, job titles, whatever you’re comfortable sharing?)
