NOTE from the Anglophone page: "A note for anyone interested, though this comment does not concern Koc in particular. Academic jobs east of the UK, even in parts of Europe, do not work the way you might expect. If you apply for this one, or others, especially in the Middle East--Lebanon and Egypt, for example--you will be interviewed by the dean, over the phone, and sent a contract in the mail. No faculty involvement, and probably no face to face at the MLA and on your first day your colleagues will be, well, very surprised to see a new office mate. If you have an office. Simply put, faculty have no rights and perks there as we do in the US and this concerns everything. Even the wrong comment on a curriculum matter might result in revocation of your work permit and an escort to the airport. Or worse treatment. If you don't believe me think about what it might mean to the university and beyond if you, say, decided to teach a feminist novel or theoretical text, or a novel with a sympathetic gay character, or a novel about an embattled minority in the country concerned (take your pick here and plug it in--Gypsies, Palestinians, Jews, Armenians, Shia in some places, Copts...). So, consider the authoritarian nature of the government concerned, and remember, you have no rights there as you do here. No AAUP standards, no due process, no academic freedom, nothing. If this works for you, and you can keep quiet and let it all go, well, these sorts of jobs are for you. If not, adjunct a little more in the US, work on that article or book, and when you get a stable job here, take a sabbatical break there, again, if you can look the other way. It took me a many years of work abroad in just this sort of job to see the light and appreciate why we have tenure and other forms of job security here in the US. There should be a special wiki site for overseas jobs so that prospective faculty can read about what they might be signing up for. And the AAUP should step up as American faculty go abroad. We need real protection from real dangers." --> While relevant for some schools, bear in mind Koc is a private university run like an American copllege, therefore, the standards are much higher! --> Word goes that these standards include princely reception on campus interviews and then no response ever. Connections have a definite bearing, since "private" can have a certain connotation in new establishments. Please do NOT erase this comment. I currently work in Turkey. I am an American, a feminist, and a queer. I work for a private university. I have my own office, travel research expenses and work with wonderful peers from top ranked international universities. My courses, as well as others in my department, focus on issues of gender, race, and sexuality. I teach texts and show films relating to transgender identities also. I generally just read the wikis and laugh (or cry) but I was compelled to respond to this one because of the ignorant comments made above about the way people are treated east of the UK. There of course are differences living and working here. The way the universities work are not always 100% transparent (as in the US). Yes, the hiring process was different for me somewhat; I was the top candidate and offered the position much like a postdoc candidate is selected--based on how you appear on paper. However it was my department that chose me, not a dean. Some of my fellow new faculty hires in other departments did have MLA interviews. Simply put, the person above may have been motivated to help people but really the comment confuses and continues creating negative stereotypes about the non-Western world. It is not perfect here. Sometimes I get annoyed with how things function and with my lack of power and control--however I think you ask any junior faculty member if they feel this way and the answer is yes. I will say the concept of tenure is different abroad. Mostly only natives seem to get tenure and the process is much longer. But to have a wonderful life experience in a country that is at once Europe, Asia, and the Middle East not only is transformative, it diversifies your dossier. I had 5 MLA interviews this year (ranging from tier 1 research institutions to a community college) as compared with 1 last year . I just wanted to present the flip side of this coin. --> FYI: Comment 3 is by a different person than comment 1, and is an answer to comment 2. Your university (and I'm taking a guess here) works differently in its hiring processes, but if my guess is right, its firing processes are quite interesting. You should check them out. I am not completely without hope for my country though. ;) QUESTION: Does anyone know the job search time frame for Turkish universities? Or has anyone heard back from Koc? It has been almost 6 weeks since the application deadline and I have not heard anything from them. Is this a normal wait period for Turkey, or have they already offered the job to someone? Any information would be highly appreciated. Thanks! x2 A: Normal for this particular univ, even after visits, and even after much longer periods of time.
