  • Their interfolio ad stated that they were accepting applications into December, but their coordinator said otherwise.  Apparently, it's a bit chaotic.
  • Any news? Anyone? There were supposed to be three positions, no? I heard word of an insider, but nothing else.

NOTES:

Any news? The deadline for cancelling MLA hotels is in two days! It's getting a little too close to the wire here.... (12/10)

  • I hear you, but those details aren't really at the forefront of most SCs' concerns. I just checked their website, and their last day of classes is Friday. Finals go through the 19th. So I wouldn't hold my breath on hearing anything by Friday. And, honestly, I know people who have gotten calls on Xmas Eve...when the MLA was held in late December. And then there was this last year: https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2014/01/02/email-job-candidates-renews-debate-about-conference-interviewing
  • Haha. Yes. I was one of the peeps who got an interview with UC Riverside last year. I was lucky enough to have a friend to stay with in Chicago. But buying last-minute plane tix is never fun. Needless to say, I didn't get the job. (12/10)

Any word on this one yet? Just wondering bc other schools with similar deadlines are setting up interviews (12/2)

  • Nothing here. Hopefully we'll hear something soon! (12/2)
  • No word here either. Given how really broad this ad is, I imagine they have just been absolutely inundated with applications. (12/2)
  • Yes, you're totally right about how broad the ad is (and the resulting avalanche of apps). I totally spaced on that. Thanks for the perspective. (12/2)

NOTES:

  • Also posted at Medieval 2015
  • Is it normal for references not to be contacted for this one, or is it just me? I've used the same system for other applications and had the option to send an e-mail to my recommenders/Interfolio to have letters uploaded, but this one doesn't even have that option. I'm guessing they might be planning to contact references at a later stage, but thought I'd check in case that's not the case and something has gone wrong.
  • I had the same problem and looked at the FAQs. There is one explaining that in the References section of the application the button "Send" will be activated at same point. When I don't know.
  • Anyone know whether they're planning to interview at MLA?
  • Has anything happened in this search since they sent out acknowledgements a month ago?
  • Anyone heard anything since first-round interviews wrapped?
  • -  Nothing at all yet. This week hopefully.
  • I'm dying here! Maybe they've only contacted people who aren't on the wiki.... (3/6)
  • At this point I'm wondering if they can't manage to get together until their spring break, or if its an internal hire, or something?  Because out of four/five ppl on here with interviews, it would be odd if NONE of us were called.  But anything's possible...
  • At the end of my interview, the chair said that it would likely take 2 or 2 1/2 weeks before they invited people out to campus.
  • As of 3/9, campus interviews have not yet been scheduled.
  • Did anyone hear anything regarding campus interviews this week?
  • Nope.  Their break is next week; I assume we'll hear then.

University of California, Davis (CA) - Mellon Visiting Assistant Professorship in Comparative Border Studies - ADDITIONAL MATERIALS REQUESTED[]

The UC Davis Graduate Group in Cultural Studies is pleased to announce a two-year Visiting Assistant Professorship for 2015-2017 in Comparative Border Studies supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Applicants should be specialists in research on one or more border zones, such as: US-Mexico, Israel-Palestine, Afghanistan-Pakistan, North- South Korea, East-West Germany, North Africa-Europe, etc. We are interested in promoting comparative and transnational research so these perspectives are preferred, but not required. The specific field is open, but interdisciplinary orientation in humanities and qualitative social sciences is preferred.

Our new three-year Mellon Research Initiative in Comparative Border Studies focuses on the making, unmaking, crossing, and fortification of borders—national, regional, colonial--and aims to rethink notions of border crossing as well as containment within different regional studies contexts as a result of transregional, comparative dialogue. The initiative is organized around three major themes: 1) human rights, citizenship and racialized belonging; 2) mobility, militarization and containment; 3) protest cultures and transnational solidarities. Research interest in one or more of these areas is preferred. We will consider junior scholars including recent PhDs and ABDs (the degree must be completed by July 1, 2015).

The Mellon Visiting Assistant Professor will participate in the activities of the Mellon Research Initiative in Comparative Border Studies. Duties include teaching three courses per year, and serving as co-organizer of colloquia and other events involving faculty and graduate students. The appointment will be housed in an appropriate department or program in the humanities or (qualitative) social sciences, in accordance with the background of the successful applicant (fields may include Asian American studies, Chicana/o studies, History, English, Spanish, Middle East studies, South Asian studies, German, Native American studies, American studies, Anthropology, among others).

The Mellon Visiting Assistant Professor will receive an annual stipend of $55,000, plus health benefits, research funding, and relocation funds.

  • To apply, please send a letter of interest, CV, and contact information for three (3) references (we do NOT accept letters via Interfolio) through the online application form found at https://recruit.ucdavis.edu/apply/JPF00476.
