Who previously held the job?[]
In some cases this year (and every year) these job postings are replacing people who have moved on to other institutions. This can be useful knowledge if you want to find out more about the position from the last person who held it. For example:
Know of other replacements or moves? Add them here.
NC State replacing Eduardo Corral who moved to Wash U and Sumita Chakraborty who moved to UVA. (Wondering if the line for Taylor Schey, the spousal hire that Sumita Chakraborty had at NC State, will also open up? He is also spousal at UVA now.) Answer: No, it won't, because he was not on the tenure track.
Cornell position might be from Alice Fulton retiring!
Reed College Poetry/Poetics - Is this an inside higher with Peter Miller? (Would love to know the answer to this as well! Their posting for a TT Poetry Prof. last year certainly was inside.. Ugh. Obnoxious! lol) [Oh boy! Now I'm wondering if their current fiction posting will also be an inside hire with Sara Jaffe].
WORD ON THE STREET[]
- Is it me, or there is nothing but adjunct professor ads on HigherEdJobs?
- there are a LOT of temporary/contingent jobs there this year, but there have been a few permanent/TT ones too. Feels less like the clearinghouse it's been in other years, which makes me wonder whether there will be a bulk of jobs elsewhere or whether they'll just be scattered this year.
- I think also the usual schedule of ads going up in summer with deadlines in October, interviews by MLA, offers by February, is sort of out the window. This was already a little wobbly before the pandemic, but now (it seems) there are far more TT jobs postings going up at surprising times. Also-also—if we look at the bigger, darker, picture—it seems admins at less financially stable institutions are just doing away with permanent and TT lines when people leave and using adjuncts instead. That said, I'm still crossing my fingers for TT ads going up in the next couple months! Extending this answer: I'll admit I'm getting a bit spooked at this point. More are trickling out, but it's definitely looking like slim pickins this year...
- Well, at our English Department, we're down from 10 TT lines and one FT faculty member to 5 TT lines, all in the space of ten years. After requesting reinforcements for the last several years, we finally got approved for a TT line shared with another department.
- At the English dept where I’m the most recent tt hire, I took over a line for a person who retired. Someone else retired in the spring, and we were about to conduct a search but the line was given to another department because they had more of a need. There was another retirement in literature (a guy I never met) and that search (for a POC hire) has been put on hold. Feels like places are hiring less TT.
- Update: Thanks for the answer. I remember seeing more TT jobs at this time of year when I first was in the market two years ago. Now, it is pretty quiet out there. The point about TT jobs popping up randomly at any time well taken--hope it's the case this year.
- Question: Has anyone heard of a candidate getting the job without a published book even though the job ad listed it as a minimum requirement? I'm wondering how strict ad committees are about this and if I should bother with those programs/schools that specifically say "at least one book published."
- Response to above question. Yes, I know a few people who've received jobs without books. It depends on the department needs and the candidate match. It usually happens to people who are actively sending out manuscripts or represented by an agent and hope to have a contract before the job starts. Again, it depends on the job listing/candidate match/needs of school, so it's hard to say.
- I was able to get a job with no book at one of these institutions, although it was years ago and I ultimately turned it down. I've known friends who were able to also, but they generally had a very strong publication record even without the book. It seems harder to get the positions that have graduate programs, which makes sense, instead of primarily undergraduate institutions. Although, I've also been on search committees where the chair said they had to look at applicants that matched what was in the ad (so if it said book, they needed to look at people with books) so as not to get potentially sued, so I dunno. I think they're worth applying to since you never know the overall pool of applicants, for one thing, and you may be able to offer something else the dept needs that could swing it/make it worthwhile for them without having the book, but I also wouldn't put too much hope in those jobs just from a mental health standpoint.
- To add to the above, the wording of "preferred" vs. "required" makes a difference. From what I've been told by HR and chairs, an applicant/finalist with a book could sue if the person hired doesn't match the "required" credentials listed in the ad. Though in practice I doubt stuff like that actually happens.
- Adding also to the above: I know three people who got TT jobs without books, and just a few nice but not overly-prestigious pubs, all at small unis in rural Texas. So maybe there's something to be said for less-desirable locations (with possibly less apps) being better shots for those without books yet.

- Question: Is there any argument to be made for applying to positions that are not your primary genre (i.e. the one your published book falls under)? Have others done this? I'm wondering because I can certainly teach (advanced) fiction, even though I'd be considered a nonfiction writer based on my publications.
- Answer: If I were in an admission committee and received such a dossier, I would try and see how the candidate chooses to present themselves and their body of work. With a caveat that I have never served in an adcom, I'd still think the cover letter offers enough creative license for a candidate to designate a primary genre that is different from what the "documents" (degrees, publications, etc.) suggest, positioning themselves as an author, first and foremost, rather than being pigeon-holed to one specific genre by choice or circumstance. More specific and concrete to your situation, if you believe that you can teach advanced/intermediate fiction, perhaps you can discuss how you'll be able to do this in your teaching statement or by uploading sample syllabi.
- (not OP nor the person addressing the question) Part of the problem with applying is that often, depending on the type of institution, for tenure and promotion you will have to publish a book or books in that genre, I have books in multiple genres, and even with that was told on interviews at more than a few places that I would have to publish in that genre to be successful. Schools with graduate programs most likely will also want someone published in that genre, for a variety of reasons. I would still apply because you never know, but think the time might be better served at SLACs, particularly those where they need people to teach in multiple genres (to get more bang for their buck) but the downside is a lot of those schools aren't doing too hot.
- Answer: I have served on several search committees for faculty and administrator positions. Search committees at public institutions are usually bound by HR to fill out a matrix for each applicant, which allows them to justify hiring decisions in case an applicant chooses to sue because they weren't offered the job. There's a difference between "required" and "preferred" qualifications--if an ad lists published work in a genre as "required," candidates whose application shows no evidence of work in that required genre are immediately disqualified. There is some flexibility with "preferred" qualifications--meaning it would be nice but not necessary to get to the next stage of the process, so the candidate is not immediately disqualified. The more boxes that a candidate checks, the more likely they are to make it to the next stage. Even if a candidate has taught a cw course on fiction, if the job ad listed "published works of fiction" as a required qualification and the applicant has no fictions publications, the application wouldn't progress.

- QUESTION: I've literally never applied to academic jobs before. Is it standard to apply through the portal and then follow up with the search committee chair via email, if their email is linked? That seems like an overstep to me, but I saw something about doing this on Reddit. I trust this wiki more than I trust Reddit. Answer: Oh goodness no. The only time to reach out to a search committee chair/contact is if you have a specific question (like, say, you are confused about something in the job ad; you had an interview and you haven't heard the result and it's well after they said you would). [I say this as someone who has not served on a committee, so take it with a grain of salt--but this is my sense] A2: The answer is a resounding No. So long as you receive the email confirming that your submission is in, you're good. In extreme cases where you don't (due to spam filters), the best you can do is to reach out to department secretary or staff to check it for you. Never the Chair, though.
- QUESTION: If a job listing specifies MFA as a requirement, is it a waste of time to apply with an MA/PhD and more substantial than asked for publication record? Answer: Not a waste of time. I've had success as an MA/PhD holder for jobs that cite the MFA requirement, though it's possible I've been first-round booted from others, of course, for the credential problem.
- Has anyone heard from Claremont McKenna or Williams? (10/30) No word from either of them.
- Does anyone know what happened with the position at Sonoma State? The posting seems to have vanished. Answer: They went on a hiring freeze because of financial troubles. See here: https://localnewsmatters.org/2024/10/29/sonoma-state-university-feels-financial-sting-of-falling-enrollment-imposes-hiring-freeze
- Seconding the above — seems like apps previously submitted still say “under review,” but position description is gone. Maybe closed early due to inside hire? Answer (kinda): The wording in the original ad was: "The position will remain open until filled. Early response is encouraged." Perhaps, they found someone they couldn't refuse?
- Do we think interview // material requests for poetry have gone out yet and they're just not added yet? Or they are just taking forever or ??
- Anybody know what's going on with Brown? People have posted they got rejections last week and this week. Has anybody gotten a request for more materials or an interview? Haven't heard anything either way—is it possible they are doing a batch by week? That seems so time consuming...
- QUESTION: Anyone in a difficult position with references? I have a PhD in English and have published a lot, but no MFA, and no real connections to writers who can write me references from inside the university system. I can get a reference for teaching composition as an adjunct, but no creative supervisors. I assume I can't turn to friends or agents, so I'm really not sure what to do.
