Bellevue University seeks a broadly trained cultural anthropologist with real-life experience in cross-cultural applications to a variety of applied areas. This position is best filled by a faculty member serving as an effective educator, mentor and role model for students and adjunct faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences. The successful candidate will have the ability and willingness to teach introductory cultural anthropology courses and develop relevant anthropology curriculum in collaboration with colleagues in other academic colleges (for example, ethnography of technology or entrepreneurial and organization-based communities). The candidate will also demonstrate an ability to teach and train in ways that value the varied learning needs and interests of a sociologically diverse student population.

The Department of Anthropology at The City College of New York seeks to add a full-time, tenure track faculty member in cultural anthropology at the assistant professor level. This Department focuses on questions of inequality and social justice through time and at the level of the everyday, including the formation of raced, classed, gendered, and religious identities within structures of power. An interest in borders broadly defined guides departmental interests in immigration, citizenship rights and diasporic processes within the Americas. The specialty of the successful candidate is open, and might include legal, political, or medical anthropology. However, he/she will have or will develop a research program that focuses on an immigrant group or groups in New York. The candidate must have demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level as well as the beginnings of an exceptional research program. It is expected that the candidate be interested in working across the disciplines, with colleagues in, for example, Political Science and International Studies, as well as Latin American and Caribbean, Asian, Women's, or Black Studies, as appropriate. College of Charleston - Sociocultural/Europe - Feb. 4
The College of Charleston School of Languages, Cultures and World Affairs (LCWA), invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor in International Studies to begin fall 2013. This position is a new appointment for one year with the likelihood of renewal for an additional two years. The International Studies program seeks a candidate whose research and teaching focuses on European immigrant communities from North Africa Francophone Africa, South or East Asia. The candidate should be able to contribute to inter- and multi-disciplinary teaching and research that enhances our interdisciplinary program in International Studies. Candidates from Anthropology, Sociology, Cultural Studies and Media Studies are specifically encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate must be able to teach our International Studies introductory course as well as the major's Capstone courses and contribute to an area studies concentration in at least one of the above regions. An earned PhD before August 2013 is required.

Job Description: The University Honors Program and the Anthropology Department are seeking an Assistant Professor to fill a non-tenure-accruing position for a renewable three-year contractual period, beginning Fall 2013. The Graduate Institute invites applications for a full-time position at the rank of Assistant Professor.
Starting date: on 1 September 2013 or on a mutually-agreed date.
Candidates must hold a PhD in Anthropology or Sociology or equivalent, and have a demonstrated interest in, and ability to address broader theoretical issues, as well as methodological challenges of studying phenomena fom the local to the global, using a mix of methods including fieldwork and ethnography. Competence in quantitative methods would be an asset. Candidates must have their doctoral degree in hand prior to their appointment.
The Institute is seeking to attract candidates focusing on one or more of the following fields relating to issues in the South: markets, poverty, inequality and social justice; global health and medicine; issues of global environment, livelihoods and resource use (e.g. climate, land, water, food and agriculture). The capacity to work with colleagues from other disciplines is an asset. The successful candidate will teach at both master's and doctoral levels and supervsie masters' and PhD theses. The teaching language is either English of French. Prior knowledge of French is not required, but the successful candidate is exepected to acquire at least a passive knowledge of it.

Mississippi State University (Nov. 16, 2012) - Department Head
The Department of Anthropology & Middle Eastern Cultures (AMEC) at Mississippi State University seeks applications for the position of Department Head to begin July 1, 2013. AMEC (http://amec.msstate.edu/) is a young, rapidly growing department. Undergraduates receive basic grounding in four-field anthropology. The applied M.A. program has two tracks: archaeology/bioarchaeology and cultural anthropology. Faculty areas include environmental anthropology and archaeology, human skeletal analysis, household and settlement pattern archaeology, and medical anthropology. Applied aspects include cultural resource management (CRM), forensic anthropology, isotope studies, geophysics, and human-environment interaction. The Department Head will serve on graduate committees and as major professor for a limited number of students. Teaching expectation is one course per semester. AMEC is in the College of Arts & Sciences, which includes 14 academic departments and eleven programs. The Ohio State University Department of Anthropology seeks a cultural anthropologist whose research and teaching focus on the social, cultural, economic, and/or environmental determinants of health, beginning academic year 2013-2014.
To complement our strengths in human nutrition and reproductive health and to develop new collaborations within and outside our department, the Department of Anthropology seeks to recruit a junior-level cultural anthropologist who applies a biocultural approach and engages a political economic framework in the study of human health and well-being, including but not limited to mental health, addiction, infectious disease, and the growing international epidemic of non-communicable chronic diseases. The successful candidate will strengthen our research collaborations with other OSU departments and colleges in the health, social, and behavioral sciences in developing theory and methods to address long-standing questions about how complex interactions between sociocultural and biological factors affect human health and well-being. The successful candidate will use ethnographic and epidemiological methods of data collection and analysis. Highest priority will be given to applicants having expertise in both of these areas, which will broaden the scope of analysis beyond the traditional framework of biomedicine or discipline-bound approaches to the study of population health. Princeton University Department of Anthropology invites applications for two tenure track assistant professor positions in sociocultural anthropology. We seek ethnographically grounded and theoretically engaged scholars whose research and teaching promise to expand our current range of inquiry. Applicants should send a cover letter summarizing their teaching and research goals for the next three to five years, and -- given Princeton's strong emphasis on independent work -- a statement of advising philosophy for undergraduate and graduate students. - I looked at the Web site to check out the faculty research interests. What struck me was that almost all of the them are Columbia or UC Berkely alumni. Ridiculous.
- Are we supposed to send physical copies of the application materials? I went to their Jobs website and couldnt' upload anything.
- Do you read this advert to mean that the cover letter must include a section on advising philosophy, or that a separate advising philosophy should be sent?
- Not applying for this, but since the clause about advising philosophy occurs in the sentence detailing the contents of the cover letter, I would assume they are asking for it in the letter rather than as a separate document. It is a bit ambiguous, though, so it might not hurt to inquire with the dept?
- "Applicants should send a cover letter . . . , and a statement of advising" -- I can't parse that as anything but two separate items (and "statement of [blank]" is a common stand-alone item in these sorts of job apps
- The online application form is asking for different documents than the ad states. Instead of advising philosophy, the online app is asking for a statement of teaching interests AND a statement of teaching interests (NOT a statement of advising philosophy). What did others do?
- I sent a long letter including a 3-5 yr research plan with teaching interests and then a separate Advising Statement, since that is what the job ad asked. I did not ask contact the Dept to ask.

I find (a) the impersonal nature of this communication, and (b) the lack of information it contains to be slightly offensive. - That is just obnoxious. As if being more than a year or two out of graduate school makes you "stale". Aside from that, the fact that it was posted at this odd time with a quick deadline, the open-ended language of the advert, and its very flexible timeline all give the department a lot of latitude in recruiting, which corroborates the idea. But all that said, Mittens, it never hurts to apply. LDS presidential candidates are clearly a minority group-- you can never predict what a department might end up deciding it wants.
- I view advertisements with "diversity goals" with a great deal of skepticism. I have been a person of color in the finalist position on 2 campus interviews this year with "strong emphasis" on diversity goals as stated in the ad and personally stated to me; in both cases, the candidates chosen were of obvious European descent, but their research and/or course teaching interests were on the African Diaspora, Latin American Studies, etc. (I was an acquaintance of both - they are good people, with substantive skills, talents - I'm not knocking them personally). But, at the end of the day, I have stopped filling out the survey requests for diversity candidates that come from the Human Resources Depts. They use these for their stats on how many people of color respond to their recruitment ads, regardless of who they actually hire. Makes them/the university look good. So, if you are a person of color and actually expect there to be substance behind the words - I hope you encounter a university that actually means what it says and doesn't simply go for the stats and the window dressing. I have yet to find one......

- Submitted an application in early March, and just received EOE survey request, so it seems unlikely either that phone interviews were scheduled in early February, or that the search committee stopped accepting applications at the end of February.

- I also received two EOE survey requests in one day. In my experience, EOE survey requests have nothing to do with interviews. They are required to submit information regarding those who apply to the position. Schools who are less than classy sometimes send these to applicants along with a rejection letter.

- Maybe my expectations have just been lowered a great deal, but I actually found this a rather forthright email. Instead of just quietly conducting interviews and eventually getting around to sending us rejection letters after the fact, they have emailed to let us know that interviews are occurring, that we are not at the top of their list, but that if these interviews are not successful or if they desire to make another hire, they will go back through the pile of letters to see if anything looks better the second time around. True, this is unlikely, but it is the unmentioned reason why schools hold off on rejecting us until they are absolutely certain they have someone who has signed on the dotted line. Basically the email says, don't count on it, but we're not going to reject you until there is nothing left to give out.

- The fact that they created a listserv to deliver the news is kind of funny and suggests that this is more or less a wholesale rejection. I guess this is to be expected considering that the job ad frames "diversity" so ambiguously that virtually any anthropologist could read themself into it; no specified subfields, topical foci, or geographical regions - just diversity. It seems like a rather anti-intellectual approach to an important cause.

The Department of Anthropology at UNC-Chapel Hill is seeking to hire a 1-year replacement Instructor in cultural medical anthropology. We seek a dynamic teacher whose research focuses on anthropological analyses of biomedicine, including topics such as: new biomedical technologies and ontologies of the body; disability and care-giving; infectious disease in political-economic and cultural contexts; epidemics and the politics of biosecurity; medical research and clinical trials; transplant; end-of-life care; and drug use/rehabilitation technologies. Scholars working on questions related to the intersections of biomedicines and other medical systems, including epistemologies of medical pluralism, the politics of bio-prospecting, and the circulation of pharmaceuticals, are also of interest.

The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), part of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado at Boulder, serves as a national information and referral center in support of snow and ice research. Our mission is to make fundamental contributions to cryospheric science and excel in managing data and disseminating information in order to advance understanding of the Earth system. Position Overview. NSIDC is expanding its data management capabilities into new disciplines beyond the geosciences. In particular, two ongoing projects supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) are addressing a broad array of physical, life, and social science data of the Arctic. The Advanced Cooperative Arctic Data and Information Service (ACADIS—aoncadis.org) is a collaborative effort with the National Center for Atmospheric Research to provide data archiving and access for all projects funded by NSF's interdisciplinary Arctic Science Program including Arctic Social Sciences. The Exchange for Local Observations and Knowledge of the Arctic (ELOKA—eloka‐arctic.org) provides data management and user support services to facilitate the collection, preservation, exchange, and use of local observations and knowledge of the Arctic. To help address this expanding scope NSIDC has created a two‐year postdoctoral fellowship to expand its capabilities in managing Arctic social science data. As a member of the ACADIS and ELOKA teams, the Postdoctoral Research Scientist will be working with professional data scientists and curators at multiple organizations, and the broader Arctic research community to enhance and expand data management services that formally preserve Arctic data and make them available to diverse audiences in integrative ways. The Research Scientist will conduct active research on how social science is actually conducted, in order to develop requirements for effective management of social science data. A Science and Technologies (STS)‐based research approach is preferred. In keeping with the broader goals of the NSF Arctic Program, a special focus should be on social science research that seeks to integrate data across disciplines and understand systemic aspects of the Arctic. The Research Scientist reports to the NSIDC Lead Project Manager who is a co‐principal investigator on ACADIS and ELOKA and is responsible for coordinating data management across all of NSIDC. Duties. The Research Scientist will play a strong role in defining social science data archival and usage requirements for ACADIS and related NSIDC systems. The Research Scientist is expected to develop and sustain Arctic social science data management at NSIDC through the future. Tasks include:
- Define and implement a research agenda to understand how Arctic social science researchers collect, assess, manage, access, share, and prepare their data, especially in a multidisciplinary setting;
- Based on ongoing research, define data system and process requirements to accommodate social science data and users;
- Develop NSIDC’s capacity to effectively manage, preserve, and ethically share social science data;
- Work with NSIDC's staff to develop and implement data systems and interfaces for social science data;

- This precise job description was posted two years ago, and out of curiosity I checked the faculty list at F&M: the person hired then seems to have left after one year. Who knows why, but since I remember having a combative AAA interview with this dept. two years ago, I have to wonder if it' s a positive working environment.

If the term effectively starts at the end of August, and applications are sent out in Sept or October for the following year, how much could that reflect upon F&M? I don't actually know that department, but from my own experience as a VAP in a small liberal arts department, it was not until well after the job season that the departmental dysfunctionalities became evident to me as a newcomer. Seems more likely that a better job opened up or there were other personal reasons to move on...

Having said that, not everyone uses the wiki, and it may not be as much of a phenomenon in the job search in Canada, where the likely pool of finalists for this job came from. Two of friends, both anthropologists in Canadian universities, had never heard about it when I mentioned it to them this year.
- This Canadian has been using the wiki for years, but I think you're right, it is used more widely by US candidates. I'm guessing there was a much smaller candidate pool for positions at UGuelph than for many of the positions here, so perhaps there just weren't any wiki users in that pool (or they were getting their info from other sources). My experience with the anthro department in a previous UGuelph search is similar to what others have posted here: I didn't hear anything about the status of the search until I received my mailed rejection letter from the SCC announcing they had hired someone.

- The hiring practices centered around these super-expensive conferences in super-expensive cities that circumvent any fair practice that the universities HR systems have in place are just awful. I'm not saying this is a case of that, but on face value it looks like it.

- To be fair, it's public information. Just because the link got deleted from this wiki does not mean that the names aren't still up on the departmental website. Any department chair is much more likely to find out someone is applying elsewhere by googling their employee's name than from a link (with no names) to a publicly accessible website posted on the wiki. People concerned about that should try to to make confidentiality arrangements with the schools they are applying to--I know sometimes it is possible (but, of course, not always, and that's part of the risks of being on the market).

The Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences at Webster University invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the level of assistant professor in cultural anthropology to begin in August 2013. We seek an individual with an active research agenda and successful undergraduate teaching experience in political anthropology with primary interest in the anthropology of human rights preferably in the Global South. General Discussion and Questions
Has anyone noticed that this year jobs seem to be requiring a ridiculous amount of documents up front? It seems insane that at the first stage of an application a school needs letters, transcripts, writing sample, syllabi, teaching and research statements, in addition to a cover letter and CV. Each of the three that I have finished has required these documents (all in slightly different requests requiring timely individualized tailoring). I have at least a dozen more apps to go, my full-time VAP to attend to, and that pesky dissertation to finish up. Anyone have any idea what the logic is behind requiring everything up front?
A: It theoretically should make the search committee's process easier. Narrow the pool based on CVs and cover letters, and then instead of having to request additional materials for a smaller cohort they would have them already at hand. As an applicant, I find it annoying as well. Some jobs even want undergrad (!!) transcripts. Even initial letters of recommendation seem like an unecessary requirement.
A2: This is particularly strange since I thought that the AAA had started asking that schools NOT require letters of rec in the first stage.
A3: My understanding is that it is not the department that requires all of these things up-front but it is from higher -up in the university system.
I've applied for three of four jobs now that request multiple documents in the AAA Career Center Ad, but when I get to dropping these files into the online college or university jobs website, the job appears to request different documents. For example, the job ad asks for two syllabi and one pub, the online system asks for two pubs and one syllabus. How are other applicants handling conflicting requests for materials?
Either I'm losing my mind (possible) or North-Carolina Greensboro had a Nov 1 Asia/Africa job that is now longer posted on AAA or their own website. Can anyone confirm this is a cancelled search?

What are people's thoughts about applying for jobs at schools where you have previously been rejected? I tried the job market in 2010 and am trying again now. Do you think that they will remember me or is it worth another shot?
A: I think it is always worth a shot, and that seems to be the general attitude from all the colleagues I've asked. Just make sure your application reflects new developments since your prior application (e.g. in your cv, their faculty make-up, etc.)
A2: Agreed. What have you done over the last two years? I imagine you are a different candidate now--if they remember you, they'll see progress. If not, *you* still benefit from your previous experiences. I personally wouldn't mention previous applications. SC members will be different ...or they won't. But it seems immaterial to include mention of it now--you cover letter needs the space for all your current accomplishments. Be confident and by all means apply!
Q: I wonder if it would be helpful to know how many folks on the wiki had applied to each position. I sometimes check the wiki obsessively to see if anyone has updated a job. If I'm the only person on the wiki who has applied for a given job, then this exercise is extra pointless. What are people's thoughts on having a notation for each job: #applicants on wiki?
- I always wonder about this, but I've decided I'm better off not knowing, because it invites pointless speculation about my chances. (Even if I could see accurate numbers, what would I do with this information? Would I decide it was better for me if there were 20 people applying to the position, or 200?) I went through the "checking the wiki endlessly" experience a few years ago and finally decided it was better to find other uses for my time. I rarely come here now, but did yesterday, and now regret doing so, because it looks as though I haven't made the long list for my first choice (and best fit) job. Sometimes obliviousness is a blessing. If you're not seeing useful information here, I recommend finding another diversion.
- I found out the number of applicants for two of the jobs I applied for last year. In one case, the chair of the search committee told us in an email when scheduling interviews. He told us how many applications (150 or so) they received, how many were being interviewed, and the expected timeline of each stage of the search. I have to say that there was something calming and comforting about just knowing all of this information (as opposed to anxiously speculating about it). That was the most professional and considerate search I have been involved in. In the other case, I heard through a friend of a friend on faculty that there were over 400 applications (a figure I thought might have been inflated to prop up the stature of the program by those from within it, but who knows). I agree with the poster above in some ways: such knowledge can invite more speculation, but it also provides a helpful if sobering reality check about the incredible crap shoot that applying for a job in these economic times actually represents. And most days for me, that makes the rejection letters feel a little less brutal.
- What I would really like to know is who gets hired (and also invited to campus visits, but I realize that is a more sensitive issue since some people's home institutions don't know they are on the market). It is really frustrating to invest so much effort in researching a school or specific program, meeting some of its faculty, trying to figure out what they are looking for and if you can be that person, and even visiting the campus and having days worth of conversations about the job, and then never hearing how it turns out. Could we create a page that lists the new hires for each position so that people can at least figure out what kind of work people are doing who are landing jobs? I know sometimes it is mentined in the specific job listings, but I think a more schematic list (also showing failed searches) would be really useful from a research perspective. Also a way to celebrate those who get jobs!
