Princeton Univ. (NJ) - Asst. Professor, TT, Sociocultural Anthropology (2 positions) - Oct. 1[]
Princeton University Department of Anthropology invites applications for two tenure track assistant professor positions in sociocultural anthropology. We seek ethnographically grounded and theoretically engaged scholars whose research and teaching promise to expand our current range of inquiry. Applicants should send a cover letter summarizing their teaching and research goals for the next three to five years, and -- given Princeton's strong emphasis on independent work -- a statement of advising philosophy for undergraduate and graduate students. Application dossiers should also include a full CV, names and contact information for four referees, a writing sample (e.g. published or submitted article) and syllabi for two courses in sociocultural anthropology (one basic, one more advanced). The PhD is required by time of appointment (July 1, 2013); therefore, current graduate students should also indicate their progress toward timely completion of the degree.
Applications should be made through Princeton University Jobs website: jobs.princeton.edu/applicants/. Address applications to Search Committee, Department of Anthropology. Review of applications will begin on October 1, 2012, continuing until the positions are filled.
Future information about the department can be found at: www.princeton.edu/anthropology. For information on Princeton’s policies related to faculty and families, see www.princeton.edu/dof/policies/family_friendly.
Application review begins: October 1, 2012
Start date: July 1, 2013
- I looked at the Web site to check out the faculty research interests. What struck me was that almost all of the them are Columbia or UC Berkely alumni. Ridiculous.
- Are we supposed to send physical copies of the application materials? I went to their Jobs website and couldnt' upload anything.
- Do you read this advert to mean that the cover letter must include a section on advising philosophy, or that a separate advising philosophy should be sent?
- Not applying for this, but since the clause about advising philosophy occurs in the sentence detailing the contents of the cover letter, I would assume they are asking for it in the letter rather than as a separate document. It is a bit ambiguous, though, so it might not hurt to inquire with the dept?
- "Applicants should send a cover letter . . . , and a statement of advising" -- I can't parse that as anything but two separate items (and "statement of [blank]" is a common stand-alone item in these sorts of job apps
- The online application form is asking for different documents than the ad states. Instead of advising philosophy, the online app is asking for a statement of teaching interests AND a statement of teaching interests (NOT a statement of advising philosophy). What did others do?
- I sent a long letter including a 3-5 yr research plan with teaching interests and then a separate Advising Statement, since that is what the job ad asked. I did not ask contact the Dept to ask.
- has anyone heard anything re: long or shortlisting? 10/23
- Received a request for letters but no invitation to interview (10/22) - i imagine this might mean that I'm on a long list?
- I also received a request for letters but no invitation to interview on 10/22.
- Received email invitation to interview at AAAs (10/22) x4 (along with a request to have letters sent)
- Received email invitation to interview at AAAs (11/7) (along with a request to have letters sent)
- At the AAAs, I overheard the chair of the committee tell someone they were interviewing 23 people for these positions!
- Campus visit scheduled (12/07)
- Just out of curiousity: has the search committee made a shortlist for both positions? (1/2/2013)
- If campus invites are happening, that is the short list.
- Not the one asking the question, but it is odd that only one person says they had a visit scheduled when there's two jobs. It's hard to believe that only one person out of the whole short list is active on the wiki. Nice to see some signs of life here still. (1/3/2013)
- I personally know someone who has a campus visit there, and they do not use this wiki.
- I have heard all four names of the people invited for campus visits (though one person dropped out). All of them interviewed at AAAs, so I have no idea what that means for people contacted even before AAAs for refs due after AAAs but never interviewed (1/6).
- Who drops out of a campus invite to Princeton?! Yeeesh.
- Apparently, that person got a pre-emptive offer not to entertain the Princeton offer...apparently, there are four people on the short-list, still. Maybe an additional person was added (1/7).
- 8 campus visits have been scheduled for January (1/8).
- Since we don't name names like some other wikis, would those who claim to be "in the know" at least name the kinds of universities/institutions from which the candidates invited for campus visits are coming? Just curious about the select tiny pool.
- As one of those selected for campus visit, I would deeply appreciate if any person to whom an offer is made report it here--should I be one of the fortunate chosen, I pledge to do the same.
- I also had a campus visit and am still waiting as well.
- Heard that one offer has been made (don't know about the second one. 2/16).
- Rumor has it the second search has been cancelled... (3/8)
- long short list received an email stating first job is still pending, second job is deferred and that there is a one-year lectureship position for next year (3/14)
- I was invited for a campus visit. I received this generic email on 3/15, which was sent to everyone on the short list: "Warm greetings from Princeton. I am writing to share an update from our on-going search process. One position is still pending, but we thought you should know that we have deferred filling the second line in favor of a future assistant professor search. In the interim, we have posted an ad for a one year lectureship in sociocultural anthropology, and we look forward to filling that position later this spring. I apologize for the anonymity of this message — it goes out to you with collegial good wishes from all of us here. Please don’t hesitate to be in touch if you have questions, now or later on." I find (a) the impersonal nature of this communication, and (b) the lack of information it contains to be slightly offensive. Would it have cost the search committee much time to send us each a personal email with a more robust explanation?
- agreed. apparently it is unrealistic to expect the committee to decide upon the desired specialization and number of positions beforehand, let alone send a decent explanation.
- for what it's worth, heard that the person who was offered the TT job took another offer, and the factionalized dept. didn't have a contingency plan, betting the farm that the one person they could "agree" upon would take it--and losing. so both searches "failed" while most of us still don't have jobs. pretty sad commentary on how this whole market works...
- one year lectureship for 2013-14 posted at https://jobs.princeton.edu/applicants/jsp/shared/position/JobDetails_css.jsp?postingId=194736
- Deadline May 3. With the endearing condition "... preference will be given to scholars whose PhDs are 2011 or later." (4/23)
- That is just obnoxious. As if being more than a year or two out of graduate school makes you "stale". They don't seem to have caught on to the fact--or perhaps more accurately, they just don't care, like most other elite institutions--that more and more quality scholars who would make a fine addition to any department are having to take post-doc after post-doc (if they're even that lucky) while competing with persons who already hold full time TT jobs for new lines. Good luck to all in this dog-eat-dog world.
- any news on the lectureship? (5/21) No news on my end (5/28)

- Same here. I was under the impression they would make a decision in early March, but I never heard back from them. (3/13)
- Second poster from 3/12 here - I am still waiting for an update from SLU. To the other finalist who posted - any idea how many people had on-campus interviews? I see two advertisements for job talks on the university's website and one of them is for my talk. Does this mean there are two of us, or simply that only two talks were advertised online?
- I believe they had three candidates for on-campus interviews. Not sure why they are not all advertised. And I heard back that they will make a decision by the middle of this week. (3/19)

University of California, Los Angeles-- Open Subfield, Assistant or Associate- Jan 31[]
Over the next one to two years, the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) seeks to hire two anthropologists for tenure-track positions at the Assistant or Associate Professor level who will contribute theoretical and empirical innovation at the leading edge of the discipline. We invite applicants in any subfield(s) of anthropology and encourage applications from those whose work creatively bridges subfields. Our department is committed to building a more diverse faculty as it responds to the changing population and educational needs of California and the nation. We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching, research, or community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.
- To apply, applicants must submit (a) an application letter including statement of research and teaching interests, (b) curriculum vitae, (c) up to three publications or article-length writing samples and (d) names and email addresses of three references who will write letters of recommendation. Please reference Recruitment Job #1085-1213-01. Review of applications will begin on January 31 and will continue until the positions are filled. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience; Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment. The appointment can begin as early as July 1, 2013.
- Where does one apply for this??? I don't see it on the UCLA anthro homepage or on the AAA jobs site.
- Kind of weird that it is only advertised there, and with a deadline in less than two weeks. Not to mention the timeline for hiring. Inside job? I thought UC positions had to be advertised widely.
- [RESTORING DELETED STUFF ...WTF?]
- Here are the deleted entries. Deletions seem to have occurred by accident, not intention, when someone was moving a search to "completed" section. Please, please, please use "Preview" before you hit publish before you make a major page revision. It is time-consuming to fix inadvertent erasures and it upsets other users on the page. Thanks. [2/7]:
- Does anyone know if the application site automatically sends an email to your referees upon submitting the application? It's not clear and I want to give a heads up to my referees. Thanks!
- yes, it does.
- thanks
- The department is looking to increase diversity
- Is that an interpretation of the job description or some knowledge beyond what's posted?
- If you reread the job description, you'll see the language right there.
- Yes, but most job descriptions have some mention of diversity goals -- however it does seem to be highlighted here rather than any other deisred specialization. Are we sure this is a diversity hire -- any point applying if you look like Mitt Romney?
- Heard a local rumor that it is. Aside from that, the fact that it was posted at this odd time with a quick deadline, the open-ended language of the advert, and its very flexible timeline all give the department a lot of latitude in recruiting, which corroborates the idea. But all that said, Mittens, it never hurts to apply. LDS presidential candidates are clearly a minority group-- you can never predict what a department might end up deciding it wants.
- I view advertisements with "diversity goals" with a great deal of skepticism. I have been a person of color in the finalist position on 2 campus interviews this year with "strong emphasis" on diversity goals as stated in the ad and personally stated to me; in both cases, the candidates chosen were of obvious European descent, but their research and/or course teaching interests were on the African Diaspora, Latin American Studies, etc. (I was an acquaintance of both - they are good people, with substantive skills, talents - I'm not knocking them personally). But, at the end of the day, I have stopped filling out the survey requests for diversity candidates that come from the Human Resources Depts. They use these for their stats on how many people of color respond to their recruitment ads, regardless of who they actually hire. Makes them/the university look good. So, if you are a person of color and actually expect there to be substance behind the words - I hope you encounter a university that actually means what it says and doesn't simply go for the stats and the window dressing. I have yet to find one......
- Phone interviews (2/5)
- Person who posted "Phone interviews" --do you mean you were contacted to schedule one, or that they are already doing them??
- FYI I have it on good authority that the seach committee has NOT started soliciting phone interviews yet.
- Is there anybody who gets contacted for the next step, phone interviews and so on? (02/20/2013)
- no further information so far. I heard the the SC is still receiving and reviewing application. So far they've received more than 400 applications!
- any further updates on the search?
- heard that they are still taking applications, planning to complete mine this week.
- they stopped accepting applications at the end of February and the ad was pulled from the Chronicle (by 2/28); has anyone gotten a phone interview or heard anything about these positions? Someone mentioned to me that the national budget "sequester" might impact whether or how they move forward with this, even though these aren't "research" specific jobs. Comments? (3/19)
- Submitted an application in early March, and just received EOE survey request, so it seems unlikely either that phone interviews were scheduled in early February, or that the search committee stopped accepting applications at the end of February.
- I submitted my application in time for the first (quick turn around) deadline. A few weeks later I got an EOE request, and ignored it. Then I received two more EOE requests today from a differnt person at UCLA. Maybe this means I should respond.... (3/20)
- I've received two EOE survey requests also, but nothing in terms of a request for an interview...(3/21)
- I also received two EOE survey requests in one day. In my experience, EOE survey requests have nothing to do with interviews. They are required to submit information regarding those who apply to the position. Schools who are less than classy sometimes send these to applicants along with a rejection letter.
- Campus visit scheduled in April (3/21)
- I got an email that 6 campus visits are scheduled but i am not one of them; the email is SO illusvie as following: "This is a complex search that offers the possibility of filling more than one position over the next year or two; as such, we are still accepting applications and are not closing the search or eliminating candidates from consideration at this time. As we move forward, we will consider your application to remain active unless you inform us that you’d like to withdraw or until we inform you that the status of your application has changed in some way."(3/28) x2
- Maybe my expectations have just been lowered a great deal, but I actually found this a rather forthright email. Instead of just quietly conducting interviews and eventually getting around to sending us rejection letters after the fact, they have emailed to let us know that interviews are occurring, that we are not at the top of their list, but that if these interviews are not successful or if they desire to make another hire, they will go back through the pile of letters to see if anything looks better the second time around. True, this is unlikely, but it is the unmentioned reason why schools hold off on rejecting us until they are absolutely certain they have someone who has signed on the dotted line. Basically the email says, don't count on it, but we're not going to reject you until there is nothing left to give out.
- I wonder if the ambiguous "rejection email" above was selectively sent or sent to [all] applicants. x2 I wonder too! Were we special or not at all? lol! :)
- The fact that they created a listserv to deliver the news is kind of funny and suggests that this is more or less a wholesale rejection. I guess this is to be expected considering that the job ad frames "diversity" so ambiguously that virtually any anthropologist could read themself into it; no specified subfields, topical foci, or geographical regions - just diversity. It seems like a rather anti-intellectual approach to an important cause.
- How would constraining their pool of applicants to a particular sub-field, topic, or region be helpful to the important cause of diversity? Doesn't strike me as "anti-intellectual" to keep a wide variety of options open.
- Any news on whether these positions were filled? The advert is still up, and the general impression seems to be that it's an ongoing thing with a rolling deadline. But given how many people applied and the fact it got to interviews, it seems like it would be a bit weird to put a new application in now...
- positions not filled yet, they are still doing campus visits.
- heard one offer has been accepted, not sure about the other

Position Overview. NSIDC is expanding its data management capabilities into new disciplines beyond the geosciences. In particular, two ongoing projects supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) are addressing a broad array of physical, life, and social science data of the Arctic. The Advanced Cooperative Arctic Data and Information Service (ACADIS—aoncadis.org) is a collaborative effort with the National Center for Atmospheric Research to provide data archiving and access for all projects funded by NSF's interdisciplinary Arctic Science Program including Arctic Social Sciences. The Exchange for Local Observations and Knowledge of the Arctic (ELOKA—eloka‐arctic.org) provides data management and user support services to facilitate the collection, preservation, exchange, and use of local observations and knowledge of the Arctic. To help address this expanding scope NSIDC has created a two‐year postdoctoral fellowship to expand its capabilities in managing Arctic social science data. As a member of the ACADIS and ELOKA teams, the Postdoctoral Research Scientist will be working with professional data scientists and curators at multiple organizations, and the broader Arctic research community to enhance and expand data management services that formally preserve Arctic data and make them available to diverse audiences in integrative ways. The Research Scientist will conduct active research on how social science is actually conducted, in order to develop requirements for effective management of social science data. A Science and Technologies (STS)‐based research approach is preferred. In keeping with the broader goals of the NSF Arctic Program, a special focus should be on social science research that seeks to integrate data across disciplines and understand systemic aspects of the Arctic. - Based on ongoing research, define data system and process requirements to accommodate social science data and users;
- Develop NSIDC’s capacity to effectively manage, preserve, and ethically share social science data;
- Work with NSIDC's staff to develop and implement data systems and interfaces for social science data;
- Develop/refine data archival processes and management for social science data;
- Develop knowledge representation methods in support of social science data;
- Travel to Arctic research locations and national and international meetings to understand Arctic social science research approaches;
- Publish research results in peer‐reviewed literature;
- Secure ongoing funding to sustain social science data management and related research initiatives at NSIDC;
- Other activities, as required for the completion of the project.
In addition to work on ACADIS and ELOKA, the successful applicant will have opportunities to engage with other diverse projects at NSIDC. They will be supported and have opportunities to strengthen their skills in proposal writing, publishing, managing students and staff, and will have access to periodic teaching and speaking experiences at the University of Colorado. The Research Scientist may be required to perform fieldwork in remote locations and/or work flexible hours in support of field activities. The Research Scientist will have regular attendance; the ability to work under stress and multiple projects; the ability to work well with others and accept direction, supervision and performance feedback; and to perform all related tasks as required.

- received email via interfolio asking for supplemental materials (10/5) X4
- Received this email from interfolio on 10/12:
- "Dear applicants, There may have been some confusion about requests for materials for the Brown job, when information appeared temporarily in the job ad that was meant to go only to 15 people on a long shortlist who were asked to submit additional materials. Only applicants who received a specific request for additional materials should gather and submit these additional materials. Apologies for any inconvenience."
- I got this notice as well, after getting an email from interfolio on the 5th asking for more materials. Are people who previously received an email from the same interfolio "help" address requesting more materials assuming they are indeed on the long shortlist?
- I think the answer to this is yes. Nevertheless, you may want to check with the department to make sure.
- Received email requesting Skype and AAA interview (10/30)
- Campus visit scheduled (12/3)
- any updates on the search?
- also, what about the post doc? any news on that front? --> Writing Samples and letters requested and were due March 1. I haven't heard after that (3/9).
- offer has been made for t-t search, not to me. (3/1)
- congratulations to the candidate who was offered the job! Has the offer been accepted?
- no, not yet (as far as I know). purely speculating here, but there may be a competition for retention involved. (3/7)
- Any more updates on the post doc search?
- The postdoc search is a separate one.
- word on the street is an offer was made for the postdoc search. But I could be wrong!
- Was the T-T search concluded? Offer accepted?
- as far as I'd heard, not yet.
- No, not yet
- Wow, that cadidate must have several good offers to negotiate!
- just heard: offer declined 3/22
- did the department offer the position to the 2nd candidate?
- I heard via an indirect source that the job negotiation is still ongoing. I could be wrong on this regard, of course.
- search finally complete, second candidate accepted the offer [posted 4/22]
Carleton College - TT Asst. Socio-Cultural Anthropology - Sept. 15[]
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Carleton College invites applications for a tenure track assistant professorship in socio-cultural anthropology beginning September 1, 2013. The successful candidate will have a specialization in globalization, sustainable development, or food and an area studies specialization in Latin America, East Asia, or the Middle East. In addition to teaching in their substantive areas, the successful candidate will also be required to teach Introduction to Anthropology. The individual we seek is dedicated to excellent teaching in a liberal arts environment, welcomes opportunities to work with students as partners in learning, and is committed to teaching students with diverse backgrounds and learning styles. Strong research credentials and a promising scholarly agenda are essential, and the successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Anthropology (or its completion imminent).
To apply, please visit the Carleton College website at jobs.carleton.edu to complete the online application, including a letter of intent, c.v., statement of teaching philosophy, and contact information for three references.
- Review of applications will begin on September 15, 2012 and preliminary interviews will be conducted at the 2012 American Anthropological Association Annual meetings in San Francisco.
- FYI - although the ad says "contact info for three references" these references will receive requests for letters of reference once you submit your application to the online system. In case you want to warn your references. (9/24)
- FYI - This is probably obvious, but I wrote to ask whether they would consider other geographic regions. The answer was no; they want to diversify their coverage. Had to try! Good luck to all who meet the criteria. (8/1)
- Anyone heard from this school? I applied but haven't heard anything. (x2) Hope someone gets into the long/short list!
- Request for interview at the AAAs (10/22) (x3)
- Congrats! Did you hear via email? Yes, from the administrator (10/22).
- Generic email rejection from administrator received, 10/23. "Although your credentials were impressive, other candidates fit our needs better at this time" etc.
- Did anyone else not get the generic e-mail, but also no contact from them about AAA meeting?
- I was not contacted for an AAA interview and did not get the generic e-mail (x4). I also did not write in my cover letter that I would attend the AAA, I regret that.
- That's probably the maybe 'come back to after AAA' pile. Unfortunately (I'm in this boat too, so don't take this the wrong way) in this market, maybe is likely going to be a no.
- Yes, I did write in my cover letter that I would attend the AAA, and have not presently received either a request for a AAA interview or a rejection (10/23). (x6)
- Did everyone else's rec letter writers submit letters? The reason I ask is that I believe only two out of three of my recommenders submitted, since the automated e-mail they received said the deadline was in late November (in small print). So we assumed that they wouldn't look at rec letters until after AAA interviews. But now I'm wondering if this is the reason why I haven't heard anything. Ugh.
- I also only have two recommendation letters. One of my recommenders commended that he was given until November 30th to submit the letter. I have not receiced either a rejection or an invitation for interview.
- Request for syllabi and a writing sample for AAA interview (10/25) (x3)
- Invitation for campus visit and interview (11/20)
- Have other people been invited for a campus interview?
- Rejection email (11/27) x2
- Neither rejection or invite here, after AAA interview (11/28) Congrats to the invitees! (x2)
- Neither invitation to interview nor rejection, much less campus visit. (x2)
- I see on their Web page that they have three job candidate talks listed for January. They don't list the names, though--good for them on that choice.
- Why? I don't see why that is something to be coy about.
- Has nothing to do with being coy. Some of the applicants probably already have positions, and they'd like to keep their job-seeking activities "private" for fear of retribution from their current employers. (I'm not one of those who was invited, by the way.)
- Rejection email--no previous contact (12/17)x2
- Offer was made and accepted

College of the Holy Cross - Sociocultural/Africa - Oct. 29[]
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the College of the Holy Cross invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment in cultural anthropology to begin in August 2013. Rank open. We seek a teacher/scholar specializing in the study of Africa; sub-specializations of interest include anthropology of religion, urban anthropology, media, critical development studies, medical/global health, nationalism and ethnicity, and linguistic anthropology. The successful candidate will teach introductory cultural anthropology, intermediate courses (some related to Africa), and advanced seminars. New course development is welcomed. This position carries a 3-2 teaching load. Please submit a cover letter describing research and teaching interests, curriculum vitae, statement on teaching including sample syllabi, undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and three letters of recommendation to http://www.interfolio.com/apply/13711. Questions about the position can be sent to Prof. Susan Rodgers, search committee chair, Sociology and Anthropology, srodgers@holycross.edu.
- Review of applications will begin on Oct. 29, 2012, and continue until the position has been filled. We shall conduct initial interviews at the AAA meetings, Nov. 14-18, 2012
- I know we are not supposed to ask if people have heard about jobs - but I'm wondering if anyone has heard a peep from Holy Cross? Did anyone else on the wiki apply for this one?
- I applied and have not heard anything yet (11/7) (x3)
- request for AAA interview via email (11/7) (x5--I was one of the people who posted this AM that I hadn't heard yet) I was contacted today. Doodle interview request shows 22 interviews! (11/8) 25 interviewees (11/11)
- have not heard a confirmation from the administrator on the requested time (11/11)
- On 11/8, I wrote to the administrator to ask if times would be confirmed and she said that I should just come at the time I picked. This makes me very uncomfortable as it seemed like the doodle poll was not set up that way. I keep imagining all 22 of us showing up at "my time." (11/11)
- I second this discomfort but hesitate to write to the administrator again given I had enough complications with this application because of Hurricane Sandy. Anyone else concerned about the opacity/non-confirmability of the Doodle poll?
- I am also concerned. How are we to know that our selection was even registered? It's strange that we cannot even go back and confirm what we selected. I tell you, there are a million small forms of torture involved in this application process.
- The admin just wrote to change my interview time due to a problem with the doodle poll. She states that everyone's times will be confirmed. Phew.
- Just received request for 2 writing samples (12/5) (x3)
- Campus visits are currently taking place (2/6)
- Recieved rejection email - position offered and accepted.

- Does anyone know what happened in their search for a Latin Americanist last year? (TT hire made)
- The ad says they would contact candidates for interviews by Oct 31st. Did they contact anyone thus far? (11/1)
- For what's it worth, two of my collegues and I applied for this job and none of us has heard a thing. (11/2) Me again, still nothing personally :(, but one of the collegues reports an interview request.
- Received request for interview at AAA even though they won't have a table at the meeting (11/5) (x2)
- Don't know if this is still the case (or if it would be reflected in the "table" chart on the AAA website) but I interviewed with them a few years ago, and it was in a hotel room, not at a table.
- They were supposed to notify by now. Has anyone heard anything?

- writing on behalf of a friend who got a skype interview request, scheduled after the AAA.
- contacted to schedule job talk (Dec 11)

The department seeks candidates with research and teaching interests in one or more of the following specializations: applied anthropology, disease/disability, gender, body, or food/nutrition. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in anthropology prior to appointment, a strong record of teaching, an active program of research and publication, a commitment to service, and enthusiasm for working effectively and collegially within a diverse faculty setting.
- Has anyone heard anything? (12/17)
- No
- did not know this opening until today. Does the department advertised the position at AAANET.ORG?
- I certainly didn't see it, and I check the AAA career site daily, sometimes twice daily. This is the first time I'm seeing the position.
- Position was advertised on AAA but appears to have been taken down after the closing date passed, its still posted on Fordham's department website.
- Nothing here either. I thought I might hear something before winter break. (12/19)
- What about now, has anyone heard anything? (1/17)
- No (1/17)x4
- Has anyone heard for an interview? Haven't heard anything at all (1/23)
- Still haven't heard anything either way -- anyone received interview info? (2/5)
- There was an entry (x3) about a long short list notification several days back, but it has gone missing. (2/9)
- Admin here: please do not delete posts. Here is a link to the deleted updates about long-short list notifications from Jan 28. http://academicjobs.wikia.com/wiki/Cultural_Anthropology_2012-2013?diff=275794&oldid=275775

Franklin & Marshall College - Sociocultural Anthro. - Nov. 2[]
The Department of Anthropology at Franklin & Marshall College invites applications for one tenure-track position in sociocultural anthropology at the Assistant Professor or Instructor level, beginning Fall 2013. Ph.D. in anthropology, teaching experience, and a track record of publication strongly preferred. Franklin & Marshall faculty are expected to be excellent teachers, active mentors, and productive scholars. Teaching load is 3/2, which includes participation in the College's general education requirement, "Foundations," and/or the first-year seminar program and teaching courses that fulfill the College's non-Western cultures requirement. We are looking for a colleague who does not duplicate our present departmental interests. The successful candidate must have experience in conducting and analyzing extensive, long-term fieldwork. Topical areas of interest are: critical approaches to humanitarianism, language and culture, visual representation, and race and ethnicity. Research and teaching culture areas are: Middle East/North Africa, Asia, or Oceania.
Candidates should send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, graduate transcript, the names and affiliations of three references, and brief teaching and research statements to Misty L. Bastian, Chair, Department of Anthropology via email at misty.bastian@fandm.edu. Candidates who progress in the search will be given directions where to send hardcopies of their transcripts. We will interview candidates for the position at the American Anthropological Association meetings in November.
- Application deadline is Friday, November 2nd, 2012. We will accept application materials electronically, but not after midnight on that date.
- This precise job description was posted two years ago, and out of curiosity I checked the faculty list at F&M: the person hired then seems to have left after one year. Who knows why, but since I remember having a combative AAA interview with this dept. two years ago, I have to wonder if it' s a positive working environment.
- Leaving after one year would probably not be a reflection on the department. If the term effectively starts at the end of August, and applications are sent out in Sept or October for the following year, how much could that reflect upon F&M? I don't actually know that department, but from my own experience as a VAP in a small liberal arts department, it was not until well after the job season that the departmental dysfunctionalities became evident to me as a newcomer. Seems more likely that a better job opened up or there were other personal reasons to move on...
- And, for what it is worth, the job ad posted two years ago said they would be hiring two people and asked for different things. To quote my 2010 jobs search document "Topical areas of interest are: cultural approaches to medical anthropology; language and culture; the anthropology of media; visual representation; and transnationalism. Preferred research and teaching culture areas are: Mexico/Central America; Middle East/North Africa; South Asia; and Japan."
- Again, for what its worth, I have never applied to F&M, but the Department Chair is a lovely person. She has been a discussant on two of my panels and offered generous feedback.
- Received email to set AAA interview (Nov 5) x 2
- To those who received email to set interviews at AAA on Nov 5: had you submitted your applications well before the Nov 2 application deadline? I submitted my application on Nov 2 and am curious if they read all the applications and made their decisions in just 2 days or if they might still be consdering applications submitted on the deadline in which case more AAA interview emails might be forthcoming...
- I submitted mine in mid-Oct, so I supposed that's possible.
- Cool thanks for responding!
- Has anyone been invited for a campus visit? (1/8)
- I was "long-shortlisted" and asked to send more materials around Thanksgiving. I was told they would be contacting people for campus visits "early in the spring semester," so I would assume that would have to be soon? Still haven't heard anything though. (1/14)
- asked for campus visit (1/17)
- did it work? I like the strategy (lol x1)
- heard through the grapevine that an offer has been made (2/23)
- This search is complete, offer was made and accepted a few weeks ago

- A professor there told me that there is an inside candidate...
- Interesting. Is it someone in JMC or LBC? This stuff is always so mysterious.
- So, as of 12/21. I haven't received an offer; wondering if anyone else has? SC head said that recs have been made to the dean but she was not sure when the actual offer was going to be made bc of logistics related to getting everyone in one room.
- That implies that the SC has probably recommended you to the dean. Congrats! Have you received the offer today?
- Nope, I haven't. And actually, maybe I did not phrase this properly. I emailed the SC head to ask about timeline and she said that she could not tell me anything, only that recs had been made to the dean. And there was nothing encouraging about the email in fact. So, if you are the one other external candidate (assuming that there were 3 of us and one was internal), perhaps we can assume that it went to the internal person?
- Hi - this is the 4th person writing here. (I was told there were four of us at the visit.) Thanks, guys, for keeping information circulating. Hope we all get to hear something soon. Best luck. 12/22

- I think either was fine. Here's what the dept. assistant wrote to me when I asked about letters in October: "We would prefer three letters of references sent to us. If you submit only reference contact information, we may contact you at a future date for the letters." (12/18).

University of Guelph - TT Assistant Professor - October 31[]
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Guelph invites applications for a tenure-track position in Anthropology at the rank of Assistant Professor, effective July 1, 2013. The successful candidate will have a strong research programme in environmental anthropology and/or indigenous peoples’ issues. Applicants with research programs that also incorporate elements of civil society are especially welcome. Ethnographic area is open, but should complement the existing strengths in the Anthropology programs. The successful applicant should be able to teach within the range of our core courses, including anthropological theory, regional ethnography and kinship and social organization. These courses run from second year undergraduate through senior seminars. Being able to contribute to graduate teaching in theory, methods and/or a substantive area is a must. Beyond these requirements, there is also the potential to develop new courses.
Applications must include a letter of application (including a statement of teaching and research interests), a curriculum vitae, a teaching dossier (including a teaching philosophy, course outlines, and course evaluations), and selected recent published scholarly work. Applicants should provide contact information for three referees. Applications should be submitted no later than October 31, 2012 to: Dr. Patrick Parnaby, Chair, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, Canada, N1G 2W1. - Applicant Tracking Questionnaire received (October 4) x 3 (received Nov 5)
- Does anyone know if they are doing AAA interviews? Seems at this point no?
- Did anyone hear from them? Did they schedule interviews yet? --reply: not me (x3).
- This posting seems to just be hanging out there. Anyone have any news? (1/09/13)
- email rejection. "candidate has already been hired." Did anyone on here even get an interview? Weird.(x3)
- No interview, no information, just a depressing rejection. So much for those who say it is still rare to earn a PhD when there are hundreds of us jockeying for so few positions. Was the PhD worth it? (1/18/13)
- -- Same here: Just received the rejection email (1/18/13) saying that the search is finished and that they have appointed someone. It is weird indeed that nobody posted here anything about an interview, a job talk etc. Maybe they had someone in mind from the very beginning and the search was more of a drag.
- weird; I didn't even get a rejection email. Having said that, not everyone uses the wiki, and it may not be as much of a phenomenon in the job search in Canada, where the likely pool of finalists for this job came from. Two of friends, both anthropologists in Canadian universities, had never heard about it when I mentioned it to them this year.
- This Canadian has been using the wiki for years, but I think you're right, it is used more widely by US candidates. I'm guessing there was a much smaller candidate pool for positions at UGuelph than for many of the positions here, so perhaps there just weren't any wiki users in that pool (or they were getting their info from other sources). My experience with the anthro department in a previous UGuelph search is similar to what others have posted here: I didn't hear anything about the status of the search until I received my mailed rejection letter from the SCC announcing they had hired someone.
University of Manitoba - Nov 30th[]
Assistant Professor, Sociocultural Anthropology
- Any news on interviews?
- I've heard nothing about interviews or a long-short list or anything (1/18)
- Campus visit invite (2/15)
- Did they make an offer already? (5/6)
- They have hired someone who currently holds a post-doc. She is starting in Fall 2014. (5/29)
University of Memphis - Applied Anthropology - Nov. 1[]

The U of Memphis offers the BA and a nationally recognized MA program in Applied Anthropology established in 1976 with an emphasis on engaged scholarship, and concentrations in (1) Globalization, Development, and Culture, (2) Medical Anthropology, as well as a graduate certificate in museum studies. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching introductory undergraduate courses in cultural anthropology and area/topical studies, as well as globalization and development courses at the graduate level. - Application reviews begin November 1 and may continue until the position is filled. Initial interviews will occur at the 2012 American Anthropological Association meetings November 14-18 in San Francisco, CA.
- I'm filling out the app now and the job system states that up-front references letters ARE required in order for consideration.
- I wrote to the search chair who told me it was a glitch in the system. they only need contact info at this point
- I think the system might auto-generate reference requests when you submit their email addresses, so it may be good to give your references a heads-up!
- email request for AAA interview (11/2) x2
- has anyone who interviewed at AAA heard back? (12/17)
- I haven't heard anything (12/17). When I asked about their timeline in the interview, they said that they would probably contact people in December for campus interviews in January.

- Did anything every come of this search? There's been no word since December. (3/14)

University of Minnesota, Morris - Cultural Anthro. - Dec. 1[]
The University of Minnesota, Morris seeks an individual committed to excellence in undergraduate education to fill a tenure-track position in cultural anthropology beginning Aug. 12, 2013. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic individual who can increase student enrollment in our program. UMM emphasizes close student-faculty relationships and faculty-directed student research. Position open until filled; application review begins December 1, 2012.
- Invited to AAA interview (~10/25) x2
- How is it possible for them to extend already interview invitations for the AAA when they clearly state that "application review begins December 1, 2012"?
- Turns out these aren't interviews at AAA, but "information sessions." :-P
- The hiring practices centered around these super-expensive conferences in super-expensive cities that circumvent any fair practice that the universities HR systems have in place are just awful. I'm not saying this is a case of that, but on face value it looks like it.
- I totally agree with the above comment. But I also want to say (as one of the people who attended the "information session") that it was utterly, completely, not at all about the candidates. There were no questions asked, no notes taken, no evaluation being made. The session was informative, but it was all stuff that I had already learned online. Other places = very different story.
- It was also utterly, completely a waste of time. I had to refrain from walking out. The person read from a sheet of paper and would not allow questions or comments. I felt like I was 12. I was not impressed --on any level. (--Second that!)
- It wasn't a waste of time for me. I politely interrupted her, and then proceeded to ask her the questions I had. Very informative, especially since she's a senior member of the department. (I agree, it wasn't a waste of time and she allowed me to ask questions).
- Request for phone interview (1/22) x3
- BCC email rejection (1/29) (x5)
- Has any one heard anything since their phone interviews? I don't think I personally did particularly well in mine BUT haven't heard ANYTHING since the Feb. 8 interview. I also know their ideal time line was to have things wrapped up by early March.
- on campus interview scheduled for this week [posted 2/25]
- Has an offer been made ?
- Snail mail letter saying the search was closed, no offer made. I was not interviewed and this is the first contact I have had since submitting the application.
- I got same/similar letter dated March 28th, and I was a phone interviewee. However, I also looked at my online application and its status said 'position filled.'

- rejection email received; said had been 25 interviews and 3 people made the short list (12/4)
- I have not received a rejection email, but was not invited to interview at the AAA either (12/6)
- 3 job talks scheduled (12/11) and thanks for keeping them anonymous
- yes thanks for keeping them anonymous. please, folks, be mindful that this is very sensitive information for those of us who are not known to be on the job market by our current institutions. and good luck to those candidates who are still in the running!
- To be fair, it's public information. Just because the link got deleted from this wiki does not mean that the names aren't still up on the departmental website. Any department chair is much more likely to find out someone is applying elsewhere by googling their employee's name than from a link (with no names) to a publicly accessible website posted on the wiki. People concerned about that should try to to make confidentiality arrangements with the schools they are applying to--I know sometimes it is possible (but, of course, not always, and that's part of the risks of being on the market).
- Does anyone have any updates on this search? Has an offer been made? (1/18)
- I suspect, but cannot confirm, that an offer has been made. Can anyone out there confirm? (1/18)

University of Wisconsin - La Crosse - TT Asst. Cultural Anthropology - Nov. 1[]
The Department of Sociology/Archaeology is seeking a dynamic cultural anthropologist who is looking to teach motivated students in a collegial, supportive, and collaborative atmosphere. Our open position is for a tenure track, Assistant Professor of anthropology to begin late August 2013. We seek applications from individuals who hold a Ph.D. in anthropology by time of appointment. Preference will be given to candidates whose areas of expertise incorporate any or all of the following: environmental anthropology, the social construction of gender, and sociolinguistics. Candidates with research experience in the South Pacific, Africa, the Middle East, and South/Central/Western Asia are especially encouraged to apply, but all applications will be considered from candidates whose geographic focus complements, rather than duplicates, faculty regional interests. Candidates who have experience with a variety of teaching methods, have the potential to obtain research funding, and have a strong desire to incorporate undergraduate students in their research activities are preferred.
- The position is open until filled, however the review of applications will begin on November 1, 2012.
- Teaching load is technically 4/4, but taught as a 3/3. From a search committee member: "The teaching load at UW-L is 4/4, but it is taught as a 3/3 load here in our dept. This means that we have 3 preps a semester, and we teach 2 sections of a General Education class as 1 of these preps. This allows us to meet the demand of the university whereby a 4/4 is a typical load, but in reality, we are in the classroom for 9 hours a week (each class is usually 3 credits)."
- Any word/replies re: AAA interviews? (x4) (11/12)
- Did they end up interviewing at the AAA? I know they had reserved slots, but not sure if they contacted anyone yet.
- I can confirm that they did conduct interviews at the AAAs, though I was not one of the interviewees. I never heard back from them regarding my application, so I assume it was tossed into the "no" pile.
- Received rejection email. Said they had 107 applicants (x6). (11/25)
- Contacted for campus visit. (11/21)
- Offer made. (12/7)
- Was the offer accepted?

General Discussion and Questions[]
Has anyone noticed that this year jobs seem to be requiring a ridiculous amount of documents up front? It seems insane that at the first stage of an application a school needs letters, transcripts, writing sample, syllabi, teaching and research statements, in addition to a cover letter and CV. Each of the three that I have finished has required these documents (all in slightly different requests requiring timely individualized tailoring). I have at least a dozen more apps to go, my full-time VAP to attend to, and that pesky dissertation to finish up. Anyone have any idea what the logic is behind requiring everything up front?
A: It theoretically should make the search committee's process easier. Narrow the pool based on CVs and cover letters, and then instead of having to request additional materials for a smaller cohort they would have them already at hand. As an applicant, I find it annoying as well. Some jobs even want undergrad (!!) transcripts. Even initial letters of recommendation seem like an unecessary requirement.
A2: This is particularly strange since I thought that the AAA had started asking that schools NOT require letters of rec in the first stage.
A3: My understanding is that it is not the department that requires all of these things up-front but it is from higher -up in the university system.
I've applied for three of four jobs now that request multiple documents in the AAA Career Center Ad, but when I get to dropping these files into the online college or university jobs website, the job appears to request different documents. For example, the job ad asks for two syllabi and one pub, the online system asks for two pubs and one syllabus. How are other applicants handling conflicting requests for materials?
Either I'm losing my mind (possible) or North-Carolina Greensboro had a Nov 1 Asia/Africa job that is now longer posted on AAA or their own website. Can anyone confirm this is a cancelled search?
- Yes. I received a message on Oct 18 from the dept. secretary that the search has been cancelled.
- Same job as this one that is still on the university HR page and was updated Oct 19?http://provost.uncg.edu/Academic/EPA_Personnel/JobLists/DetailPage.asp?s='2413'
- If this is one of those cases of someone lying on the wiki to get an edge, that's really severely f-ed up. What a disgrace. I hope it's not true.
- Has anyone emailed Prof. Andreatta to check? I see that the above link is active for the job but it is not on the department website (their chair search is) and it is not on the main listings page for HR either.
- A professor there just wrote (I have permission to quote): "We had to replace the original job position announcement with a call for a new department head, as our department chair (who has been in that position for about 9 years now) announced that he is stepping down." So that probably rules out most of us. Good luck all!
- Just got an official snail mail letter that the search is cancelled (10/22)--extra disappointing considering how much material they asked for and how long it took me to prepare it! Good luck to everyone.
- Cancellation confirmed by e-mail.
- (10/23) I called the chair and he confirmed that the search was cancelled.
What are people's thoughts about applying for jobs at schools where you have previously been rejected? I tried the job market in 2010 and am trying again now. Do you think that they will remember me or is it worth another shot?
A: I think it is always worth a shot, and that seems to be the general attitude from all the colleagues I've asked. Just make sure your application reflects new developments since your prior application (e.g. in your cv, their faculty make-up, etc.)
A2: Agreed. What have you done over the last two years? I imagine you are a different candidate now--if they remember you, they'll see progress. If not, *you* still benefit from your previous experiences. I personally wouldn't mention previous applications. SC members will be different ...or they won't. But it seems immaterial to include mention of it now--you cover letter needs the space for all your current accomplishments. Be confident and by all means apply!
Q: I wonder if it would be helpful to know how many folks on the wiki had applied to each position. I sometimes check the wiki obsessively to see if anyone has updated a job. If I'm the only person on the wiki who has applied for a given job, then this exercise is extra pointless. What are people's thoughts on having a notation for each job: #applicants on wiki?
- I always wonder about this, but I've decided I'm better off not knowing, because it invites pointless speculation about my chances. (Even if I could see accurate numbers, what would I do with this information? Would I decide it was better for me if there were 20 people applying to the position, or 200?) I went through the "checking the wiki endlessly" experience a few years ago and finally decided it was better to find other uses for my time. I rarely come here now, but did yesterday, and now regret doing so, because it looks as though I haven't made the long list for my first choice (and best fit) job. Sometimes obliviousness is a blessing. If you're not seeing useful information here, I recommend finding another diversion.
- I found out the number of applicants for two of the jobs I applied for last year. In one case, the chair of the search committee told us in an email when scheduling interviews. He told us how many applications (150 or so) they received, how many were being interviewed, and the expected timeline of each stage of the search. I have to say that there was something calming and comforting about just knowing all of this information (as opposed to anxiously speculating about it). That was the most professional and considerate search I have been involved in. In the other case, I heard through a friend of a friend on faculty that there were over 400 applications (a figure I thought might have been inflated to prop up the stature of the program by those from within it, but who knows). I agree with the poster above in some ways: such knowledge can invite more speculation, but it also provides a helpful if sobering reality check about the incredible crap shoot that applying for a job in these economic times actually represents. And most days for me, that makes the rejection letters feel a little less brutal.
- What I would really like to know is who gets hired (and also invited to campus visits, but I realize that is a more sensitive issue since some people's home institutions don't know they are on the market). It is really frustrating to invest so much effort in researching a school or specific program, meeting some of its faculty, trying to figure out what they are looking for and if you can be that person, and even visiting the campus and having days worth of conversations about the job, and then never hearing how it turns out. Could we create a page that lists the new hires for each position so that people can at least figure out what kind of work people are doing who are landing jobs? I know sometimes it is mentined in the specific job listings, but I think a more schematic list (also showing failed searches) would be really useful from a research perspective. Also a way to celebrate those who get jobs!
Question: How long does it typically take from the last on-campus interview until an offer is made? Or does it vary greatly?
