Full-Time / Tenure-Track Positions []
Aarhus University (DNK) - Anthropology (Deadline: 14 Oct. 2014)[]
The Department of Culture and Society at the Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University invites applications for an assistant professorship in anthropology. The position is a full-time, three-year training position; and subject to appropriate funding there will be an opportunity for a subsequent associate professorship. The position is available from 1 January 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The successful applicant will have a strong research profile based on comprehensive field experience. Applicants with special qualifications within one or more of the following subjects will be preferred: medical anthropology, visual anthropology, globalisation and development, and/or innovation, organisation, work and design.
- All applications must be made online and received by: 14 October 2014. Please apply online here
- Any news on this one? In November, I heard that they received 80 applications and were sending them on to an assessment committee. They thought they would get back to us in 2 months. I haven't hard anything.
- Just wrote to the chair--last week--and found that they indeed did receive over 80 applications. He said the assessments should be ready in the next "few weeks" (which, according to Scandinavian time, means by next fall).
- Assessments are now out
- Was anyone else deemed "qualified" for this position? If so, what exactly happens now? The email I received explained that the assessment reports would now be send to "the management", but then what? Do they whittle the number of qualified candidates down to a short list (three, four people?) and then ask for references? Do interviews follow suit? No idea how the Danish system works. As well, I'm just curious as to how many people were considered qualified for this position--especially considering how it was split between medical, visual, development and/or organizational anthropology? That's one heck of an open call...
- I was deemed qualified. It depends, sometimes the categories are split between qualified and very qualified, in other cases they pick from the pool of people deemed qualified. Usually interviews follow once they whittle down a short list of those deemed qualified or very qualified. How these people are picked is an open question depending on the position. References should have been sent with the initial application
- I was also deemed "qualified" and have a Skype Interview. Any ideas how big of a pool they skype with?
- I was deemed qualified, but no skype interview for me--bummer.
- For those of you who were invited for a Skype interview, what was the format like? How long was it? Has it been scheduled yet?
- The interviews happened last week. I think we're supposed to hear back this week, but I haven't heard anything yet.

- Letters of reference requested by email via Interfolio (11/11) x10
- Were all of these requests made 11/11?
- Can someone clarify the letters of reference request. Did the request come via email, or just through Interfolio? I see that on Interfolio my appication is now marked as incomplete, and that there is room for references. Does this mean they are being requested of me? Any timeline for having the letters submitted? New to Interfolio, so any help is much appreciated, thanks. (11/14)

Can others confirm the Interfolio dynamic?

- Thanks for letting me know about Interfolio experiences. Good luck candidates.

- Letters of recommendation requested x3 (11/12)
- I just got an email request this morning for letters (11/17).x2
- Letters seem pretty pro-forma here, given that it's just a form e-mail addressed "Dear Candidate" and the applications are not even due for another few days... It seems like a way to technically get around the AAA rules about not asking for letters at the first stage while actually creating more work for everyone...
- Maybe this is the case, but I applied several weeks back and did not receive the request for letters.
- Has anyone who submitted on the deadline received a letter request or confirmation of receipt? (11/17)
- To the poster above--I just did. They seem to be tricklying in slowly today. Don't lose hope just yet...
- (11/17/14) To clarify re: comment above, you received request for letters or just confirmation of receipt, or both? I have received neither...
- I received a request for letters today, but no initial confirmation of application receipt at the time of application (11/14).
- I applied several weeks ago and received no rec request or confirmation. I am not the same person as the first person who posted, so know that you are not alone in your situation (11/17)

- Request for phone interview (12/3) x 2
- Email rejection, first time been contacted (12/16) x5

- Fellow job searchers, Help! Does anyone know why there is a different job ad on the Saint Louis University jobs website? http://www.slu.edu/jobs/faculty_job_details.php?i=12729&d=12729jd It asks for quite different things (ie. online application (for all but the recs) instead of the aaanet ad's suggestion that all needs to be posted) The SLU ad also asks for a quite different candidate "Subareas of interest are advanced methodology and urban-community development. The successful candidate will have expertise in advance quantitative methodology and a willingness to teach a M.A. and Ph. D. courses in the following areas: advanced quantitative methodology, community development or program evaluation. The preferred candidate should have skills across multiple methodological techniques and a policy orientation." Which one is correct?!!! Or are they hiring two people for the Fall of 2015? Or am I somehow misreading/mistaken?
- the department is also hiring a sociologist, I assume this is the call for that position
- Emailed the chair after submitting an application online, following the links from the department website for the anthropology position. The online application is for the Sociology position. Submit your application for the Anthropology position by POST as per the ad on the AAA website.
- 10/23 Skype interview request x3
- 11/20 The job ad has been reposted with a new deadline (12/1).
- Out of curiosity, did anyone ever get any sort of confirmation email or EEO request after the initial submission? I did for other jobs that had postal mail applications, but not for SLU. (11/20) I also submitted for the earlier deadline and did not receive any confirmation or EEO request; it appears that they weren't happy with the pool and are hoping that re-posting gives them more candidates (11/21) <-- alternatively, they got into trouble with HR for not using the university's online platform, so they're reposting it to comply. <--yes, given the news about the campus visits, that's almost certainly the case.
- 11/20 Campus visit organized.
- Offer made and accepted. [Is this correct? I heard it was a failed search again.]
- Nope, not a failed search.

Southern Methodist University, Assistant Professor of Anthropology--Japanese Culture/Society (Deadline: Dec. 15) - CAMPUS VISITS COMPLETED[]
The SMU Department of Anthropology invites nominations and applicants for an opportunity to be involved in a dynamic interdisciplinary program in Anthropology. Creative and innovative thinkers are encouraged to apply to fill a tenure-track appointment for in Cultural Anthropology at the rank of Assistant Professor to start August 2015. We propose to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Sociocultural Anthropology who specializes in Japanese culture and society within the important contexts of rapid urbanization and globalization. Because Japan plays a key role both within its region and globally, we seek to enhance our undergraduate and graduate programs by adding a focus on Japan to our current cultural and geographic specializations, thereby covering most of the Pacific Rim. The ideal candidate will conduct research and publish on the challenges and opportunities of Japan’s critical national and regional transitions. Possible areas of expertise can include one or more of the following: demographic change, migration, technological development, changes in family life and employment patterns, industrial and market transitions, natural resource use, and human/environmental impacts. Our candidate will also incorporate a focus on related policy development and its implications for Japanese society, as well as for other Asian nations. We prefer candidates with experience working in a research context with NGO’s and other institutions on practical solutions to these challenges.
We envision the ideal candidate teaching a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in his/her area of topical and regional expertise as well as contributing to broader topical/comparative courses in urbanization, globalization and applied Anthropology. Furthermore, because Anthropology is an interdisciplinary field that emphasizes the cross-cultural comparative approach, we envision someone with a background in Japanese culture and society offering a contrasting view as a guest lecturer and/or team-teacher in existing courses focused on urbanism in America. Our candidate will also have opportunities to contribute to and participate in a range of different SMU interdisciplinary programs including Business, Environmental Engineering, International Studies, Human Rights, World Languages and Literature, Markets and Culture, and the Dedman College Interdisciplinary Institute.
SMU has strong graduate and undergraduate programs in anthropology with possibilities in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex area for interdisciplinary linkages to other universities, and the larger metropolitan area. Candidates should demonstrate a history of external research funding, scholarly publications and high quality in teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels. While an appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor tenure track is anticipated, extraordinary candidates at all levels will be considered.
Minimum qualifications include a PhD in anthropology at time of application, demonstrated expertise to teach undergraduate courses in cultural anthropology and graduate courses in their specialty, and an established record of funded research.
- Application: Please send a cover letter addressing research and teaching interests, curriculum vitae, and contact information to Dr. Caroline Brettell, SMU Dept. of Anthropology, P.O. Box 750336, Dallas, TX, 75275-0336, cbrettell@smu.edu. Please cc all application materials to Pamela Hogan, phogan@smu.edu. We encourage digital applications with saved documents in .pdf form. To ensure full consideration for the position, the application must be received by December 15, 2014 but the committee will continue to accept applications until the position is filled. The committee will notify applicants of its employment decisions after the position is filled.
- Follow-up request for letters in early Jan. Any further news on this search?
- Skype interviews were done in mid-late Jan.
- Campus visits for four candidates concluded 2/27.

The Department of Anthropology within the Division of Social Sciences at the University of California, San Diego (http://www.anthro.ucsd.edu/) is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. The Department of Anthropology invites applications for an assistant professor in socio-cultural anthropology who has a special interest in racial formations, which broadly may include multicultural, multi-ethnic and historically pluralist social orders. Thus we include here multiple forms of cultural difference that become socially institutionalized and a basis for hierarchy and ultimately conflict. Subjects of interest include (but are not limited to): the analysis of racism and its changing patterns; the historical and contemporary analysis of ethnic/racial and religious based social orders (structural pluralism); relations between race, ethnicity and class; hierarchic and egalitarian ideologies in relation to racial/ethnic conflict; the intersection of ethnicity and religious identity including the ethnicization of religious conflict; transformations of indigeneity and indigenous movements; xenophobia in autochthony movements. Geographical area of interest is open. This appointment is a tenure-track assistant professor position beginning July 1, 2015.

- has anyone heard anything back yet about this position? long lists, interviews, etc? (10/24)

- I think they had an inside candidate. I received word on the 8th that they have their finalists.
- You received word within a week of the deadline that they had finalists?! Wonder why they didn't send that news out more broadly (yet). And can I just say for the record how much I hate the broad job listing when there's already an inside candidate? Can't you at least signal that by making the listing as narrow and absurdly specific as possible, so that we all know and don't waste our time?!? Grrrr. (11/3) x2
- I agree! Especially since they asked for recommendation letters up front: fie on them for wasting everyone's time. (11/3) x3
- Is this confirmed? (11/8)
- There was no inside candidate. Three finalists have been chosen for on-campus interviews.

Regional focus open: particular interest in Latin America, Africa, Asia or Oceania. The teaching load is four semester courses per year plus a January course every other year.
- Application deadline: October 15, 2014. Preliminary interviews at the AAA annual meetings in December are important in the selection of final candidates. For initial application, submit only curriculum vitae and detailed cover letter outlining research and teaching interests. All materials should be addressed to: Chair of the Search Committee, Department of Anthropology and Sociology and must be submitted through Interfolio. Follow this link to apply for the position: https://apply.interfolio.com/25712. Fax and e-mail applications will not be accepted.
- Invitation to interview at the AAA meetings (Nov 4) x 3
- Did anyone else get this? x3 (2nd person posting: considering that this application only included a CV and a cover letter, I would think the first step in the decision process would be to request letters, no? Something does not seem right here...anyone else get such an invitatation?)
- No invitation here but it isn't that odd. Some universities use the AAAs as a way of narrowing the pool (yes even before letters). The AAA invite might have also requested letters (we don't know). Williams also did a 1-year search last year and in their rejection letters they informed some applicants of the upcoming TT search and suggested they apply. Others, like me, did not get the suggestion. I have a feeling that they know what they are looking for despite casting a wide net.
- To the previous poster -- yup, I did get that request last year, but no invite this time around, so what they want might also be shifting. Also, I have heard that last year's VAP would be a front runner for that position, the way that search was framed.
- Job Talk invitation (12/16)
- Official rejection by email from search chair (2/13). The email mentioned that they had made an offer to candidate who accepted, and also that they had received 387 applications!!!
- (2/16) Second that, rejection email had a personal feel; nice to see these days.

A Running List of Schools Violating AAA Career Center Request[]
The AAA has requested that search committees refrain from asking for letters of recommendation until initial screening of applicants has been completed:
"Solicitation of letters of recommendation should occur only after an initial screening of candidates to minimize inconvenience to applicants and referees. Names of references may be requested, however."
http://www.aaanet.org/profdev/index.cfm
Despite this (at least three year-old request), many institutions persist in requiring letters of recommendation as part of an initial application package. This places a burden on both the applicant and his/her reviewers and places undue stress on advisor/advisee relationships. Please list here the names of schools/job posts asking for up-front letters of recommendation so that we may alert the AAA to violations of their request:

10/26 Musing: Note, this isn't an apology for the tactic by these programs, but: I'm struck by the fact that the list requesting letters right away is _growing_ and I suspect that in today's bleak, competitive market & under the strain of academic cuts, it'll continue. This may be because of a few reasons: 1) HR might demand that of all job searches and therefore it's a matter of compliance; 2) This may be a way to weed out candidates from the very start--those who have the excited support of their committees/departments vs. those who, for whatever reason, do not.
The lesson to be learned is that job applicants should start getting letter writers prepped even in July-August.
I think it is two things: 1) Tradition, as in its always been done this way 2) laziness, it is easier for the search committee to have the letters on hand. Search committees rarely look at letters before they get to the short list.
11/12: I've been on the market for years but this year for the first time I am on a search committee. I convinced our SC members that we did not need initial letters, but that was overruled by mid-level admins who changed our ad to state that we did. That said, having the letters has been very helpful even at the initial stage. We are in the multiple 10s of applicants not the multiple 100s like some searches, but I read all the letters on our way to making our conference interview list (I know others did too, it was a significan part of our discussion, albeit less so than materials the candidate provided). Letters let you know (as noted above) who has the support of their committee, when there are multiple applicants from the same program/advisor they show how they stack up, and they give insight into gaps in CVs/why someone is leaving a TT position/didn't get tenure, etc when it could be awkward or inappropriate for the applicant to state it their own document. I still think letters ideally should *not* be part of the initial package, but the logistical ease of the SC really is there, especially for smaller searches. In our case, the letters very much mattered in making our first cut.
11/19: In response to the SC poster above, any thoughts on individually tailored recommendation letters vs. Interfolio letters? Does the difference between the two and the impression that each makes (respectively) stand out to you?
12/16: Institutions follow different practices with respect to letters and place differing weight on them. A SC that is trying to winnow hundreds of applications to a list that can be interviewed is not likely to have much use for letters in the opening stages. If I'd read three letters for every applicant in the search we're doing this year, I'd have had to read over a thousand letters. At my institution we only ask for letters from candidates we've invited to interview at the meetings, and we don't really look closely at them until after the interviews, when we're ready to start moving to a final short list. Letters are important to us, but less important than an applicant's writing sample or description of teaching interests. Letters that are detailed about the candidate's work and provide an honest assessment of the candidate's quality have the most influence, but we don't expect the letter to address us as a specific department.
