It appears to be down now, but I wonder why they pushed it back three times. ==> presumably to attract more candidates? I guess we will have to wait a few more weeks to hear (if ever!) back. ==> That, or they were waiting for budgetary approval to close the posting. Could be that this search is DOA.
  • any news on this?
  • None on my end. Sigh.
  • I just called the department to get an update and they are making first round decisions right now. The search is still active, they are working on a medium list.

We are searching for an anthropologist or a geographer who specializes in contemporary human health and well-being in the context of global environmental and/or social change.

  • Nothing on my end...
  • Nada x1. Seems like a lot of searches are later this year, and/or posting here has become less common.
  • received an email informing me I'm on a long list and requesting a syllabus (11/6)
  • checked the recruitment website and they'd requested a syllabus a month ago, but I never received an email. x4
  • After reading the above comment, I also checked the recruitment website and saw that an optional syllabus had been requested on October 12. I wonder if they decided to request syllabi from everyone, but just didn't bother to tell us? In any case, I haven't been contacted about being on a long-list, so I assume that the syllabus request does not equal long-listing.
  • Same. I uploaded the syllabus all the same, but I suspect that you're right and I haven't made the first cut. (11/14). x4 - and I'm really dissapointed. :(
  • Dear All...Remain calm, they have your info. Always remind yourseves that If they want you, they will find a way to tell you.
  • Those people who were on the long list got notified and asked for a syllabus. They may have had to open the portal on interfolio for everyone (or may have not known how to do it more selectively). I wouldn't bother to add a syllabus if you were not contacted by email, but it also doesn't hurt if you have one and have doubts.
  • Online interviews scheduled. Nov 30.

University of Tennessee (TN) - Post Doctoral Research Associate - Cultural Evolution - Deadline: 15 Oct. 2017[]

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Tennessee (UT) seeks to appoint a two-year postdoctoral researcher in computational social science to start by 1 August 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The research project will apply culture evolutionary modeling to analyze existing databases of human behavior, past and present, in order to robustly examine how cultural evolution in the 21st century digital West differs from that of past centuries, millennia and/or traditional societies.

The appointment is a rare opportunity for an early career researcher to join an ambitious research network that is focused on real-world applications of the research to business and non-profit sectors. Although based at UT, the postdoctoral scholar will be invited to collaborate with researchers at Texas A&M University–San Antonio, with all travel expenses covered through that institution, as well as with researchers at the Socionomics Institute near Atlanta, an innovative consulting group with a commercial interest in cultural change and market activity and that has hosted the international “Social Mood” conference every April since 2011.

The ideal candidate will have a developing publication record in areas of computational social science, which may overlap with areas of anthropology, cultural evolution, sociology, social-network analysis, and complexity theory. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in a social science as well as skills in programming, familiarity with large databases and social datasets, and quantitative statistical analysis. Desirable abilities could include knowledge of Bayesian statistics, parametric inference, stochastic processes, and/or phylogenetic analysis. Candidates must show the potential for international research and publication. S/he will exhibit proclivity for independent work as well as co-ordinating interdisciplinary research with collaborators in the U.S. and internationally.

Historically known for its unparalleled strength in forensic anthropology, the anthropology department at UT is in an exciting period of growth and increased international attention in its core areas of biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, and archaeology. UT is committed to building international excellence in an interdisciplinary scientific approach to anthropology. This commitment is demonstrated by the hiring of a new department chair through an external search and by the department’s 2017 move to Strong Hall, with its new, state-of-the-art facilities shared with the departments of biology, chemistry, and earth and planetary sciences.

Interested individuals should submit applications via email as a single PDF to Professor Alex Bentley, Chair of Anthropology (rabentley@utk.edu), that includes: (1) a cover letter including statements outlining research interests and experience and how they relate to the theme of the postdoctoral appointment above; (2) names of and contact information for two references; and (3) a full CV.

  • Review of applications will begin on October 15, 2017, with initial interviews held by electronic media and/or at upcoming professional meetings.
