The Department of Anthropology at Florida State University is recruiting two Cultural Anthropologists to join our vibrant and growing department. Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology

Responsibilities

The Department of Anthropology invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Cultural Anthropology. Our department is in an unprecedented period of growth as we reopen our PhD program. We seek applicants whose expertise complement and expand the existing strengths of the faculty. Preferred candidates will demonstrate a research focus that is both theoretically and methodologically grounded, and that tackles important global issues and contemporary challenges. Specific research and geographic focus are open.

Of particular interest are individuals whose research utilizes a mixed-method approach for understanding issues related to climate and the Anthropocene, migration and mobility, and/or social inequalities. Candidates whose research program has the potential to attract funding from the NSF, NIH, and other external sources are especially encouraged to apply.

This position is on a 9-month contract. Tenure-line faculty teach a 2-2 load, mentor undergraduate and graduate students, conduct research, and contribute to the shared governance of the department and university. Primary teaching duties will include courses required for the undergraduate major, courses that satisfy the general education undergraduate requirements and combined upper-division/graduate courses on topics in the candidate's research area.

Qualifications

Applicants must minimally hold a Ph.D. from an accredited institution or the highest degree appropriate in Anthropology. We seek a colleague with a demonstrated record of excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching, an interest in incorporating students into research opportunities, and an active externally-funded research program.

Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to motivate and inspire students, are essential.

The Department of Anthropology, with the support of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, is expanding its role in maintaining Florida State University as one of the top Public Carnegie Research I universities in the country. The Department is undergoing a phase of dynamic growth and adding new faculty in our newly reopened PhD program. We seek scholars who enhance applied learning and advance research and scholarly activities. Ideal candidates will organize and capitalize on key partnerships across campus and the city and increase community building locally, regionally, and/or globally. Given our commitment to community engagement and engaged scholarship we seek to appoint faculty who are deeply embedded in the communities they study.

Teaching Faculty in Cultural Anthropology

The Department of Anthropology at Florida State University invites applications for a Specialized Teaching Faculty position in Cultural Anthropology beginning in August 2025. We are seeking a dynamic colleague with expertise in applied anthropology, broadly defined, in fields such as business anthropology, community health, environmental anthropology, UX research, or related areas. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate courses that both complement and expand our current offerings, while also contributing to the growth and development of our PhD program. Our graduate program emphasizes biocultural anthropology and scientific methodological approaches, and we welcome applicants who can enhance its interdisciplinary reach. The geographic focus for this position is open.

This is a 12-month renewable contract position at the rank of Teaching Faculty I, with opportunities for rank advancement and promotion. Teaching faculty at FSU typically carry a 4-4-2 teaching load and are expected to participate in the shared governance of the department and university. Teaching expectations may be adjusted based on class size and service commitments. Primary responsibilities include teaching required courses for the undergraduate major, as well as upper-division and graduate courses aligned with the candidate’s area of expertise.

Assistant Professor, Applied Cultural Anthropology, Mississippi State University

The Department of Anthropology and Middle Eastern Cultures (AMEC) invites applications for an Assistant Professor, tenure-track position in applied cultural anthropology, beginning August 16th 2025. Regional focus is open. The preferred candidate will bring innovative methodologies for training students in engaged and/ or applied anthropology that have the potential to build collaboration within and across the sub-disciplines of the department.

AMEC is a dynamic department offering an anthropology major and Middle Eastern studies minor, with an applied anthropology MA program including a cultural anthropology track, and applied archaeology, bioarchaeology, and forensics tracks. A strong, active research agenda with the potential for involving graduate and undergraduate students is crucial to this position. The successful candidate will contribute to our track in applied cultural anthropology and must demonstrate a strong commitment to both graduate and undergraduate teaching and mentoring. The preferred candidate will be able to teach introduction to cultural anthropology, qualitative/quantitative research methods, as well as topical courses in their area of study. The position carries a 2:3 teaching load and a nationally competitive salary.

ROLE of the POSITION

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) is seeking applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, specializing in cultural anthropology with a focus on environmental anthropology in the Americas (Latin America and the US Southwest). The anticipated start date for this position is the Fall semester of 2025. We invite applications from dynamic individuals whose research expertise significantly contributes to the field of environmental anthropology, with a specific emphasis on the Americas. The successful candidate will explore and advance understanding in areas such as environmental degradation, illegal economies, extractivism, natural protected areas, national/regional identities, decolonization, heritage, and sustainability. Geographical focus should center on Latin America and the US Southwest. The ideal candidate will possess an active research project, demonstrating a commitment to advancing knowledge in the anthropology of the environment and climate change, particularly emphasizing the role of Indigenous communities and social movements in contemporary debates. The Assistant Professor will be responsible for teaching a range of courses, including Introduction to Cultural Anthropology, Ethnographic Methods, as well as upper-level and graduate seminars in their area of specialization. The teaching load for this position is 2 courses per semester.

PROFILE of the DEPARTMENT/COLLEGE

The Department of Anthropology at UNLV is a three-field department (archaeology, biological anthropology and cultural anthropology). MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Colorado College: TT Position Position in Anthropology (Environmental or Medical), Due: November 10, 2024

The Department of Anthropology is seeking to hire a sociocultural anthropologist at the Assistant Professor level with research and teaching expertise in environmental anthropology and/or medical anthropology. Further, we are interested in applicants with expertise or a strong interest in developing skills in lenses of equity (e.g. critical race studies) and those who use community-based learning or other applied approaches that can take advantage of opportunities in the local region. We are committed to hiring someone in this position who will join and strengthen our department’s commitment to antiracism, equity, and inclusion as stated in our Department of Anthropology Anti-Racism Statement. This tenure-track hire would be expected to teach introductory and upper-level courses in sociocultural anthropology that contribute to our course offerings for the major and minor and the college’s General Education requirements. This hire would also share departmental faculty’s responsibility in regularly teaching methods courses appropriate to their subdiscipline and the department’s core requirements for the major: Anthropology (AN) 206 Doing Ethnography, AN215 Anthropological Theory, and AN315 Senior Capstone.

Colorado College is a private, undergraduate liberal arts institution. Located in downtown Colorado Springs, the College enrolls approximately 2,200 undergraduate students. One distinguishing feature of Colorado College is its Block Plan, in which professors teach, and students take, one course at a time. Each block meets daily for three and a half weeks, allowing for unique teaching and learning strategies. Professors teach six of the eight blocks in an academic year, and this schedule often includes one block dedicated to supervising senior capstone projects. The Block Plan lends itself to experiential, field, community-based, and project-based teaching. Job Description

The Department of Anthropology at Idaho State University seeks an exceptional colleague for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the sub-field of medical anthropology to support and grow critical programming in teaching and research. This 9-month tenure-track position will begin August 2025. Candidates will demonstrate collaborative research interests emphasizing the intersection between medical anthropology and Latinx/Latin American studies, complementing current department strengths and the health professions mission of Idaho State University. Successful applicants will have a strong background in cultural anthropology and ethnographic methods. Research foci may include, but is not limited to, public health, ethnomedicine, environmental health, mental health, violence and trauma, gender and sexuality, biotechnologies, globalization of disease, policy, among many.

Applicants should demonstrate original research specializing in medical anthropology or global health as evidenced in publications and grants, with the potential to attract significant external funding. Applicants should also demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in medical and cultural anthropology, student mentoring, community engagement, and a commitment to working with diverse populations, including Latinx and/or indigenous students.

The successful applicant will teach 6 courses (3 per semester) in medical and cultural anthropology, including introductory courses, upper division courses, and graduate courses that may be field based, service learning, online, or interdisciplinary. Faculty are expected to supervise undergraduate and graduate students, perform university and professional service, and conduct active research that involves students.
