AAUW American Dissertation Fellowship[]

Do you have to be working on gender/women's studies to get this?

Nope - check previous winners.

Wasn't there a fee for this? How do I pay it, since it's not in the application - or have I missed something? (Nope, no fee)

Did the AAUW extend the due date? Now when you go onto the submission site it says the application is due 11/8/2018. Edit: To answer my own question, yes! The deadline has been extended. I emailed them and they responded: "Thank you for contacting ISTS! Yes, the deadline has been extended until November 8th to allow applicants to make any final edits to their applications!"

03/04: March is here! Waiting anxiously. Last year it seems like they notified in beginning of the second week. 3/11 and 3/12 gonna be the day?

  • I might die before then. (Too dramatic?)
  • I'm so glad other people wrote something because I've been thinking the same thing!

03/08: This weekend is torture. At a conference and having a hard time staying focused. Shout out of support to all those reading the wiki. Break a leg everybody! (x10)

  • provisional acceptance email (7:01 AM PST, Literature). I am shaking
  • provisional acceptance email, history (x3 for someone in my history program, not me (yet!!))
    • Congratulations! I hope they are still in the process of sending out acceptance emails :) Anyone in history?
    • Congrats!  What's the first letter of your last name? Wondering if it's going in alphabetical order....
    • Congratulations! That's so exciting! Hopefully they are still sending more out today. I have refreshed my email hundreds of times this morning but have not heard anything yet... Good luck to everyone waiting! (x2)
    • I guess this year is going to be a first when only one person heard from ACLS on the forum :D. Congratulations, let's keep our hopes up!
    • Well, there's the second acceptance. Guess that makes it official, as far as this wiki goes. Time for a stiff drink... (x1)
    • last year i think they announced some of the alternates with the rejections, so still a kernel of hope there?
    • It seems like last year, rejection/alternate emails went out a week after the acceptances.
  • provisional acceptance email (10:01 AM EST, Literature).
  • provisional acceptance email (9:58 AM EST, Musicology)
  • provisional acceptance email (09:02 AM EST, French)
  • provisional acceptance email (7:08 AM PST, English)
  • Provisional acceptance email (9:02 AM CST, Philosophy)

It looks like in past years all of the acceptances were sent out at the same time. I'm finding it hard to keep any hope alive at this point. What's everyone doing to pass the day today?

  • Working through edits for a book chapter... and venting with a colleague.  We're convinced that ACLS-Mellon wants people who have published a lot already as we both have lengthy lists of quality grants/fellowships.
  • I wish it were so simple! I have two published journal articles, with one more formcoming in the top journal in my field. Still got rejected last year and this year. Merit matters, but so does luck.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  • I have eight publications but what I don't have is an acceptance letter in my mailbox! (Also what I didn't have was a great, polished chapter to send because my drafts are still in flux, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.)
  • Thanks for these insights. Did you already receive rejection letters? If so, what fields? And since this is my first time applying for this fellowship, I would appreciate if someone clarfiied what "provisional acceptance" is.
    • I haven't received anything (3/12), so I'm praying for an alternate spot, but expecting a rejection. I'd also love to know what "provisional" acceptance means.
    • I haven't received anything - History, Balkan Studies - (3/12) and am expecting a rejection, unless a miracle happens.  What does "provisional" acceptance mean?  Anyone?
  • For what it's worth, I got a provisional acceptance and I only have one publication in a small newsletter (and I don't come from a particularly prestigious institution). Luck (and a bunch of work) indeed!
    • Well, nobody is short of the "bunch of work" part, I believe, since we all work so hard to get to where we are career-wise. Even completing the application for this particular fellowships took me months. When more than 1000 people apply for a fellowship and there is only 60-70 available, the majority has to be rejected regardless of the quality of their work.

I was also rejected last year, but our formal rejections didn't come until a week after acceptances went out! Hoping they send them out earlier this year!

Does anybody know if they provide feedback for the rejections as well?

  • yes, I think you can request feedback on rejected apps (looks like I'm in the same boat). there are directions on the FAQ section on the website.

  • Still nothing. Could someone please explain what this "provisional acceptance" thing is about?
    • Basically each person needs their advisor to confirm that they're eligible for the award before they'll write a formal award letter. If you have already accepted another grant, or defended, etc., you would have to turn it down.
    • Thank you!
  • To those who didn't get it, I was rejected last year and accepted this year (end of my 6th year). It's a crapshoot either way! --- Thanks for the info. I wonder if chances are higher when you have more than one chapter. My field is History, and I plan to re-apply (I had only one completed chapter when I applied).
    • True... but I'm in my 7th year and I did explain why I'm taking "longer" -- serious medical reasons that pushed off my exam date. I hope that readers understand that life does happen when we're en route to the PhD!
    • So hard to know! Last year I had only written one chapter when I applied and this time around I've drafted six (out of seven). My timeline I submitted was mostly time for the introduction, conclusion, and substantial time for revisions.

  • Received an email this morning at 6:37 am PST notifying me that I have been selected as an alternate.

Congratulations! [3/15 Update: Notified this morning around 9:30 PST that I've been accepted!!! Good luck to everyone else waiting!] I've still heard nothing from them at the moment... anybody still waiting for the good news?

  • 3/15: I wish.  But someone in my program got the ACLS so my chances of getting anything positive are now gone.  ACLS wouldn't want to award to two people in the same program in the same geographic region... *crushed*

    • Anyone received a rejection letter? we need a closure.
      • I agree. I want closure. Just send the rejection already, geez.
      • Nothing here yet. I am guessing we will hear from them tomorrow.
      • Agreed!! I don't understand why they can't flat out reject people in the acceptance round if there are 1,000+ applications for 60ish spots. It feels kinda sad to keep us hoping!

03/18 Received a rejection e-mail today, 2:15 pm eastern time. (History) (x6) - Rejection letter, 1:30pm central time. (Art History x3) - There we have it (Literature). sigh.

Does anyone know if ACLS/Mellon provides feedback on applications?

Yes, they provided it for me last year but I didn't get it until September.

03/21: Official award letter received. (Posting this for future reference, since I couldn't find clear info from past years on when this would be sent)

9/3: finally received comments on my failed application

My application is no long visible on the portal. Anyone else? (1/13)

It's been gone for awhile now. I think that's normal based on conversations I've had with past applicants. Anyone have any idea whether or not the government shutdown will effect their application review timeline?

Calls notifying finalists of interviews went out on 1/20

Drat, I'm assuming they called all finalists for all of the fellowships on the same day.

Ah well, congrats to everyone who got the call!

Do you mind sharing how you heard? 01/20 was a Sunday and there is no posts on other CASVA boards about this so I was just wondering how you know. If you got a call, congrats! I guess it is back to the drawing board for the rest of us.

Finalist interviews held on 2/7 and 2/8

Has anyone begun getting calls with acceptances? Or does that start tomorrow?

No call yet! Received a phone call with an acceptance offer 2/10.

Does anyone know when we receive the official acceptance letters? --Apparently letters will arrive this week or the next.

Have alternates been notified?

0_0             2/13 Is this the week for the finalists or the next week? (2/14)

"And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee." 2/18

Anybody has heard anything? (today was the day for the finalists last year). - heard nothing here

Y'all, this is brutal!!!!!

Maybe it’s going to be next week. It’s been that late some years, or so it seems

Nothing here as well. I also feel like it will be the end of this week or early next week. Hoping that they won't make us wait until mid-March as their website says though :\ I do not think this is going to happen, because even rejections come towards the end of February every year. So this week is full of possibilities... (I agree, I think the mid-March date is just them covering their butts so they don’t get a ton of anxious phone calls)

For the past ten years finalists/nonfinalists were emailed the third full week of February (except for the Hurricane Sandy year). More often on Tuesdays, but the day of the week changes. 3pm EST.

Thank you all, it is good to know. I'll keep my fingers crossed for all of us!

I do not wanna freak out anybody, but this silence does not seem good. 2/19

I do not wanna freak out anybody, but I think an asteroid is hurtling toward earth. 2/19

Well, that puts our search for funding in perspective...

Maybe tomorrow someone will hear something? Too late for today (Feb 19)

Hopefully tomorrow will be the day for the finalists. I checked the submission email and it says "we will inform the finalists in February." I think that means they are going to inform finalists first, and then non-finalists, as they generally do. But I am not sure if the notifications for finalists have already been emailed.

I’ve turned off notifications, but it isn’t stopping me checking every ten minutes anyway

I am waiting for my rejection, to be honest... because it is statistically more probable, and we do not have any applicants from religious studies who have posted here (they are the largest group of applicants each year) (2/20)

Does anyone know of anyone else who’s applied and isn’t on this wiki?

I just texted my friend who also applied (History), and nothing there either.

Religious studies here....nothing.

Anyone brave enough to call or email? In my past experiences, whenever I called or emailed, the responses were often ambiguous, and after a few days, I got my rejections.

They tend to send finalist and non-finalist emails on the same day, and it's not uncommon for that day to be Thursday or Friday of the 3rd week of Feb.

Hurrah, a ray of hope!

Is it just me, or is this finalist method unusually cruel? Why even tell us, you know? You're putting some of us out of our misery, but you're essentially giving some of us hope, but mostly setting us up for delayed misery. I'd much rather be rejected the first round than be a finalist and rejected later. And there's no value in it at all: putting your finalist status on your resume is essentially just saying "hey check it out I was rejected." This is so bizarre. I fucking hate academia.

I think so too. However, I still wish to be a finalist even though I might not make the final stage, because it will give me some hope for my other fellowship applications.

It saves all those who aren’t finalists from having to send in official transcripts, so there’s that

why not just have winners send in transcript?

I’ve been obsessively checking my email all week, but now I’m kinda hoping not to hear anything until next week because getting an email after 3pm on a Friday seems kinda ominous x2

Do you think Feb 25 will be too late to inform finalists? In the past years, the last day was Feb 23.

I honestly think that if they had contacted finalists this week, they wouldn’t be waiting until after the weekend to contact non finalists. The email said by the end of February, so i guess it’s not too late. Of course it’s all conjecture... but I’m choosing to feel hopeful!

I'm hoping today is the day! (02/25)

I am losing my hope every other hour.

This is the Hour of Lead –

Remembered, if outlived,

As Freezing persons, recollect the Snow –

First – Chill – then Stupor – then the letting go –  (02/25)

What is this on the website!!??! "Notification of Status (Finalist and Non-Finalist) By March 15, 2019" -- That does not mean anything; they have always sent notifications (both finalists and non-finalists) well before March 1.

I wonder if anybody here has got a finalist notification and has not posted it here. How many of us are active here in any case? Am I chatting with only 1 or 2 persons?

I’m not sure how many are active, but 10 people signed up as having applied. The email we got when we applied said notification of finalist/non finalist status would be by the end of February, so they’re getting close to the line! Soon. We will know soon.

I do not think this is a mental-friendly website. If I get my rejection just through email, it would be much better than waiting for weeks if anybody has got anything. This is just an extended mental torture.

Nothing today so far (2/28)

I called.  They had a delay and they will let finalists and non-finalists know next week.

Thanks for doing that and letting us know! (x8)

Just got my rejection email, good luck everyone (03/06 9AM ET) x4 [Cheers to all of us who ever tried and ever failed. And, congrats to those who are-so systematically-granted to take them all.] -- Well, I do know my research is one of the most promising ones in my field, so really, if they were not able to see it, it is their loss! I am not going to judge my scholarship based on a 6-pages-long grant proposal. I am sure some of you think the same for your own projects, so keep going!

Got email announcing finalist status. x4 Of over 500 applications, the top applications have been selected and forwarded to the Final Selection Committee for review. (It doesn't give a percentage or anything). 03/06 9:35 AM

Does anyone know how many finalists they typically name?

Last year it was "almost 500 applicants" and they named 14% as finalists, with 21 awards available. That means about 70 finalists for 21 awards, so 30% of finalists got the award. (This info is from the finalist letter last year. I was ultimately rejected FWIW.)

Anybody has heard anything?

I think they gave an April 5th deadline for the phone calls, so I imagine we should be expecting to hear back some time next week. (3/29)

I've been jumping every time my phone rings for the past week, haha, but I guess last year they made the calls starting March 26 and said non-finalists would be notified on March 30. Since it seems things got a little delayed this year, the fellows are probably starting to receive calls today. I haven't heard anything though! (4/1)

This has been a one long and painful wait, and I cannot wait it to be over (04/02)

Notified of acceptance 4/1

Notified of acceptance 4/3, via call around 3pm est, although the letter they sent is dated April 1st. (4/3)

-Congratuations! Any alternates? I am just not sure how the process of notifying alternates work for this fellowship.

I got a rejection letter today (4/3/19). They said that 500+ applications were received for 23 awards. Congrats to those who got one!

- No acceptance, but no rejection received either.  I guess I'm an alternate?  I have not received any official notification. (4/3/19)

- I'd be interested to know if any of the acceptances do european modernism or have a more philosophical / theoretical project. This particular committee seems like it would not be very sympathetic to such a project, but maybe I am just looking for reasons where there aren't any.

- I just got an alternate notification today:  "While you were not selected as a Fellow this year, you were selected as an alternate.  This means that should any of the students who were offered the award decide to decline it,  we will appoint an alternate in their place."  Not sure how many alternates there are.  (4/4)

Any notifications about the HSS fellowship yet? (May 7)

Probably comes out in early June for HSS; or they might have it out by late May if they're fast. They have a new coordinator this year for HSS so I think things are taking longer than usual.

Any news???  No news here..

Someone in Stem got two days ago it but someone deleted it..

Any news here yet?

>> No news, but I think that we should be hearing back until next week, isn't? Around the 20th. (3/11)

From what I know based on past years, CLIR notified as early as this week and sometimes as late as the end of March, but generally next week is the week. My best guess is notifications will happen sometime between 3/18-3/25. Fingers crossed whoever gets the first notification is on this wiki and will let us know! CLIR asks awardees not to inform anyone they were selected until after the public announcement, and rejections come out around a week after acceptances, so there's really no way to know what's going on unless someone posts (3/12)

Do you know how they notify? email or phone call? I'm so nervious, please tell us if you have news (3/14)

They notify by email. No news on my end yet! Permanent nausea has definitely set in haha (3/14)

Any news here? (3/22)  None on my end (3/22) None! (3/22) Zilch here, too (3/23)

Last year, recipients were notified on 3/26, but the last time they heard later than that was in 2014. My stress levels are through. the. roof. Hope y'all are in a better place.

Waiting is terrible! no news here (3/25) Still waiting. Any news? (3/26) Nothing but defeaning silence on my end. I really hope if recipients were already notified, one of them knows about this wiki and will let us know. Trying to keep my hopes up. (3/26)

Just got my rejection. 381 applicants for 15 fellowships. Best of luck to everyone else! (3/26) (x6)

3/29 No news except to say that I did not receive a rejection on 3/26. I'm just kind of hanging out. Does anyone have a suggestion for at what point I should just email/call them? --maybe you're on a wait list of some sort? If I was in your position I'd probably email them because waiting is torture, but it depends on what you feel comfortable doing. Good luck!

Dumbarton Oaks Junior Fellowship[]

Deadline: November 1, 2018

Fellowships and Junior Fellowships are normally awarded for the academic year (September 9, 2019, to May 8, 2020). During this time, recipients are expected to be in residence at Dumbarton Oaks and to devote full time to their study projects without undertaking any other major activities. Except for Plant Humanities Fellowships, awards may also be made for a single term (either September 9, 2019, to January 3, 2020, or January 21 to May 8, 2020).

Support includes a stipend of $21,000 for a Junior Fellow or $35,000 for a Fellow for the full academic year; housing (a housing allowance may be offered instead of housing if Dumbarton Oaks is unable to provide accommodations; successful applicants from the greater Washington metropolitan area will not be offered housing); lunch on weekdays; and the health insurance contribution from Dumbarton Oaks. Travel expense reimbursement for the lowest available economy airfare or rail travel (or mileage if less than the equivalent economy airfare), up to a maximum of $1,100 for domestic travel or $1,600 for international travel, may be provided for Fellows and Junior Fellows if support cannot be obtained from other sources (such as a Fulbright travel grant). Reimbursement of Visa fees is also provided for Fellows, but not for dependents.

Fellowships are prorated for appointments shorter than the full academic year. Dumbarton Oaks anticipates that sabbatical salary or funds from other sources may supplement awards, particularly to Fellows. Fellows may hold other grants with the knowledge and permission of both the grantors and Dumbarton Oaks.

For junior fellowship applicants, official graduate transcripts must be postmarked by November 1 and mailed to: Manager of Academic Programs, Dumbarton Oaks, 1703 32nd St. NW Washington, DC 20007.

1/14: This is from the Faculty Handbook ( ): "In late November, you will be notified about Bolin Fellowship applications from the dean of the faculty office. The Gaius Charles Bolin Fellowship was established in 1985 to underline the importance of encouraging able minority students to pursue careers in college teaching, and now members of all underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. Applications are submitted and reviewed online by each department or program, with evaluation methods at the discretion of individual units. Chairs should submit a shortlist of top candidates (if any, and no more than 3) to the associate dean of faculty in early December. By mid-December, the Bolin Fellow selection committee will review the nominations from all departments and programs and approve candidates for Skype interviews. Units will conduct Skype interviews in December and early January. Names of candidates who have the enthusiasm of the unit should be forwarded to the associate dean of faculty by mid-January. We aim to appoint two Bolin Fellows each year, for two year stints."

Does this mean that interview requests have likely already been sent out?

Email on 2/27, failed to make the cut to the next round. Anyone know how many rounds are left? --pretty sure there are only 2 (3/12)

I called. An automated message says the committee will meet on Saturday April 6th, and they will be making acceptance calls that day. If we don't hear then, it says to assume rejection.

Recieved acceptance email around 6:30 EST

4/9 notified of rejection after email inquiry.  Good luck, everyone!

  • Applied ZI, Munich - nothing as of 03/12 (rejected via email 03/14)
  • Does anyone know if all the institutions conduct interviews?
  • I know 5 people who have won the Kress at 3 different institutions over the past 4 years and none were interviewed before their acceptances. I have never heard of anyone being interviewed for the Kress. Where are you getting this information?

Did anyone else have their entire profile erased on the Kress grant portal after either acceptance or rejection??

  • I applied to this but have not yet heard anything back. Has anybody else heard anything? (4/19/2019).
  • Yes, I received notification that I had been awarded the diss fellowship in early April. The deadline for accepting the award is May 3rd, so perhaps they're waiting to notify others...?

Mabelle McLeod Lewis Memorial Fund[]

Can someone please tell us how to apply (and send the link if possible)? I cannot find any info online.

-It's always posted as a job ad from what I've seen. It looks like this year's hasn't yet been posted but there's an email address for inquiries:

Any word on when notifications of acceptance or rejection for this grant are sent out? I can't find any information anywhere. --your best bet is to look through this sites past dissertation fellowship pages. seems like this fellowship has little other info available.

Nothing here 3/10

Still no word by midday 4/15. I emailed the coordinator to ask if she had any idea of the notification date--or if I could learn of the status of my application. I'll report back if I hear anything.

(4/18) I called to ask the program executive secretary if there was any news. She said the committee had determined their list of awardees but the MML trustees had yet to confirm the list. I'm not sure if the winners were already notified via email, but I was informed that I was not selected. I'm disappointed, but it's better to know. Congrats and best of luck to those who were selected.

^^ x2 not selected (4/9). Found out by calling program executive secretary.

Did anyone get a Skype interview yet? Usually they happen by the end of January with on-campus visits mid-February.

-- I thought I was the only one here this year! Haven't heard anything, pretty disheartening based on the past few years' schedules, but some have skype requests starting the last few days of January, so fingers crossed I guess

Also still waiting to hear. Last year I didn't hear anything until the rejection, but knew that other folks had interviews. Fingers crossed and good luck everyone!

  • Same. No news for me either :( guessing that's a bad sign.

Applied (x10)

I have it on good authority that finalists have been chosen (20 of them) and that the committee is meeting on Saturday to decide. Finalists are not notified, so there wasn't an email. Good luck, everyone!

(4/16) Any news, anyone?

  • (4/16) None here yet. Notification dates seem to have varied quite a bit in the last few years; my only guess is sometime between now and end-of-day next Friday, the 26th.

(4/25) Starting to get nervous as the end of the month approaches... anyone have any updates?

  • (4/25) Nothing here :-\
  • (4/25) Nope, hoping they send something soon!
  • (4/25) Nothing here either--I am constantly checking my email though haha
  • (4/25) Nothing here as well.  I sent an email asking when we might expect to hear something.  I'll let you know if I hear anything!
    • (4/29) Thank you for emailing! Do you happen to have heard anything back?
    • (4/29- 3:05PM EST) My pleasure.  I honestly couldn't take the waiting.  I'm going bananas waiting to hear about this dang fellowship, and I've gotten nothing but silence from them. I'll post the moment I do. Good luck, everyone!
  • (4/25) Not helpful, but last year, I still hadn't heard on May 2 when I sent a follow up. So, might be awhile still. Good luck everyone.

(4/26) Still nothing, huh? It seems that they send out offers before rejections, and offers always came before April 26 in the last few years.

  • (4/26) Yeah, nothing here as of 5pm EST. This particular grant seems to have always had a really frustrating notification process. Only 2 business days left in April - my assumption is just going to be that I'm rejected.
  • (4/26) Nothing here either. Obviously, it's hard to remain optimistic at this point. I just hope that once someone gets any news of acceptance they post it here, just to stop the agony.
  • (4/27) There were multiple acceptance days last year, including the last day of the month - between the 26th and 30th (Thursday and Monday). I also think it's unlikely that not a single person who checks this wiki will be accepted; that hasn't been true for any year on record. So: no good reason to assume rejection at this point.
    • (4/30) You were right! I'm glad to see it.
  • (4/29) Now I'm beginning to feel pessimistic. I truly resent the way this fellowship is handled.
  • (4/29) Same here; any fellowship that can't send out rejections on the same day as acceptances (or acceptances all on the same day when there are only ~10 of them!) needs to get its s**t together. It's unbelievable that so many of these institutions apparently don't have people working for them who can find their way around a basic mass email tool.

(4/27) Do they only send emails during the week (Monday-Friday)? I assume that's the case, but I wanted to double-check since we're so close to the end of the month.

(4/29) Well, here we go with the last couple of days of the month... good luck, everyone!

(4/30) Well, it's the last calendar day of the month; let's hope someone hears about the Mellon-CES today! I am finding it hard to believe that no one has heard by now - when everyone should have gotten a response one way or another by now (at least according to their page, not according to practice).

  • (4/30) Fingers crossed... good luck, everyone!
  • (4/30) FYI: Not to give false hope, but I was supposed to hear from an award last year "by the end of April" and I heard back on August 22 (they just kept delaying the notification date and sent out the first delay notice on May 1). This is to say that I'm not ready to uncross my fingers just yet! Sending you all peace and calm!
  • (4/30) They can't delay that long. Funding is supposed to be available immediately, starting in May.
  • (4/30) 2:44PM - acceptance email received

(4/30) Will be so pissed if they don't send rejections out today.

(4/30) Yeah, don't want to wait 5 days to get a rejection email....

(4/30) Nothing here at 5:19pm EST. Jeez louise.

(4/30) received acceptance 2:53PM

(4/30) Congrats to those who received acceptances! Fingers crossed that there will be another round, or that alternates will hear soon.

  • Acceptees have til May 5 to respond, so it's possible some second round picks / rejections won't be out til after then.
  • (4/30) Yes, congralutations to those who received acceptances and thank you for letting us know! I feel that I can rest a bit easier, knowing that our waiting it about to come to a close very soon.
  • (5/2) Acceptance received at 11:04 am. I'm at the end of the alphabet, if that makes any differenece?
  • Field is what matters, and period.
  • Fuck this so much.
    • Getting it/not getting it is equal parts luck and talent: do not be discouraged. This award has no bearing on who you are as a person, a family member, a partner, a friend, which are all more important than your role as a scholar.
      • Thank you for saying this! I too am unhappy with the way the award notifications have been handled, but I think it's good to remember that all of these awards require exceptional amounts of luck in addition to the hard work we all put in. Successful or not, it's best not to invest so much of your sense of self in them that they seem like the most important thing in your life. (And I say that as someone who could really, really use the money, security, and time.)
  • Does anyone know which fields/periods have received awards already?
  • (5/3) How does field/period even work? If there are only 10 awards, why send out offers on multiple days? Two today and two tomorrow and two the day after? What sense does it make?
    • (5/4) I'm an acceptee, field modern (19/20c) history. I assume at least some awards come out on different days as first day acceptees decline?
    • (5/4) I, too, am an acceptee working in the 19th c. (Hi!) and although I heard on May 2, a professor at my school knew early last week and was "bursting" wanting to tell me.

(5/6) Now that the deadline to accept has passed, I hope they plan on notifying the rest of us soon. I am starting to get very tired of waiting.

  • (5/7) Concur. I barely even care on my own behalf any more - 110% assuming rejection - but this whole process just strikes me as so unprofessional.
  • It would be ridiculous if they did not send out rejections today.
  • lol, i feel like they must be trolling us at this point. they do not care and will probably never let us know. fuck this fellowship, seriously.

(5/13 am) Has anyone here even heard about alternate status? I'm just laughing at them now. A friend who worked briefly for CES also told me recently that they were not at all surprised to hear that this process was badly organized...

(5/15) Out of curiosity, has anyone received a rejection yet?

  • (5/15) No, not yet. I have sent an email asking them when we should expect to get an update on our application. I imagine that they will send out rejections in their own time, though.
  • (5/21) I did the same last week and did not hear back.
  • (5/21) Still nothing here either. I'm genuinely astounded by this. Not only is it appalling from an administrative standpoint in general, but it seems to be by far the worst/slowest year for this grant in its lifetime so far, judging by the previous years' wiki pages.
  • (5/21) Just received a blanket rejection.
  • (5/21) Got a form rejection email as well.

Applied: Cultural Anthropology x1

Applied: Archaeology (x1): Received informal email from Program Director that I was not awarded. I will receive my reviews in a few weeks.

(3.28) - I noticed in last year's threads there were mentions of email confirmations about the applications. I've received no email from NSF, nor has the PI on my application. Am I alone in this? ---->I did not recieve an email confirmation either (cultural anth)

For those in Cultural Anthro, it looks like Review Panels are 3.25-3.26 & 3.28-3.29

My proposal is marked "Submitted to NSF: Assigned for Review," corroborating the above. I applied August and heard rejection news exactly two months later, hoping we get something soon. (Cul Anth) ----> ooooh, I am still listed at pending (and last time went straight from 'pending' to 'declined'). Wonder what the "assigned for review" is about (cultural anth/STS). ----> my proposal in is also listed as pending with a status date of 1/15. from previous years postings it seems like never changes to submitted for review? (cul anth)

> It seems this "assigned for review" category is synonymous with pending actuallly, mine says pending on the home page of but "assigned for review" when I go to "View/update submitted proposals" under the "new!" proposal preparations tab. -> yeah, I get an error message there and a "no proposals submitted". I dont think it means anything, just itchy for news. (4/3)

(4/2) Applied to Law & Social Sciences (due date 1/29), still marked "pending"/"assigned for review" in "View/update submitted proposals."

Also, where does one find review panel dates? I only see panel dates for the broad category (SES) but not the field. --> I would look by program director (for exmaple, i assume the panel's run by jeff mantz are the cul anth reievws):  --> Thanks! I can only find review panels starting 4/1 and the program director isn't there, so I assume the panel already met.

(4/15) Any news?

(4/15) Nothing here, but it should be soon. (Cul. Anth)

(4/16) My status is still Pending but the status date changed to today's date?  --> Interesting. That seems meaningful, no?  --> Seems like it may be a sign that you'll hear something soon? although I am still listed as pending with a status date of 1/15 :( ----> Yeah, it might mean a rejection since I think they upload those first, but I guess we will see... still nothing (4/18)

(4/18) this is actually taking longer than usual right... or I'm just impatient? --> yea, i've been wondering if this has something to do with the fact that a budget resolution still hasn't passed the senate, which may affect NSF funding. If that is the case, you would think they would still send out rejections though. --> It would appear that last year, decisions were made about this time but they didn't begin going out until the end of April and even into late May. It's a frustrating wait, for sure, but this seems like the same timeline as last year, even with the shutdown happening right at the beginning of the process.

(4/19) broke down and emailed the program director, who is sympathetic to our plight. It looks like we may hear a first wave of rejections soon/ish, but that it will still be a couple weeks before those that are more seriously being considered for funding have news. --> Thanks for calling and for the information!

(4/27) heard that some people have gotten cultural anth rejections (heard from thier advisor, not sure if anyone has been declined on Has anyone on here heard anything? --> I've heard the same but through

(4/30) My status is still pending but the status date was updated to 4.30.2019, any idea what this might mean? (CulAnth+Arctic Co-Review) --> no idea.

(4/30) anyone know what the stats provided in reviews for rejected applicants were in terms of how many competitively ranked applications there were this year?

(05/01) Rejections have gone out for both cultural anthro panels. Details on each are below (sourced from my letter and a classmate's): One was divided into: Competitive, 21 proposals (7 High Priority, 14 Medium Priority); Not priority but fundable, 8 proposals; Not competitive, 61 proposals. The other: Competitive, 14 proposals (7 HP, 7 MP); Not a priority but fundable, 13 proposals; Not competitive, 64 proposals.

They expect to fund approximately 15-20% of the total 181 proposals. --> thank you for the update! thats quite a few more "competitive" ranked proposals than last round, which didn't even have a 'not priority but fundable' category.

(5/01) Any news about Law & Social Sciences?

(5/7) Has anyone heard of any acceptances for Cultural Anth yet? (5/7) Nope, but my status date just changed to 5/6 and PO changed from Mantz to Winslow, so maybe another wave of rejections/other news happening soon. --> thanks for the info! these random status changes are such a tease :( ---> 5/14, rejection notification emailed to my PI. Panel outcomes was competetive, high priority, but programs officers did not reccomend for funding as there are more projects in that category than would be able to be funded. ---> (5/14) Oh, very much sorry to hear this... Have you also found comments of the panel or a status update on ---> yep, all there! nice comments mostly, the reason for not getting funded is kinda.. meh.. but I got a Wenner-Gren so all is ok.

(5/16) heard acceptance emails are going out today! --> (5/16) Yeah I got my acceptance maybe 2 hours ago!-->got mine this afternoon!

(5/17) Anyone hear anything on Law & Social Sciences? I emailed the PO about a week ago and was told that applicants would be hearing soon.

(5/21) I'm also still waiting on Law & Social Sciences. Any news yet?

(6/10) Still waiting on Law & Social Sciences. My status date hasn't changed since March. Has anyone heard anything?

(6/20) Any news on Law & Social Sciences?

(01.28) Did anyone hear from SSRC re: transcripts?

  • Nothing on my end either. The FAQ says "applicants will be contacted by the program via email about their status in February 2019," so perhaps that's when transcript requests will be sent. That and rejections. (1/29)
  • (1/29) According to pages from previous years, they emailed people on Jan 26th for transcripts in 2018 and 2017, so they might get around to it before Feb this year as well...It looks like they email rejections after (around the 31st).

- nope, nothing yet!

Any news...?  Nothing. This is late for them but I'm going to optimistically expect something in the next few days...

(02.04) received rejection email this afternoon.

Acceptances are made by phone call, usually 2/3 week of March.  Rejections go out at end of month

Rejected 3/15 (x2)

Anyone still waiting to hear back? Haven't heard either way. For folks who heard, was it by email or letter? (3/26)

Wenner-Gren Dissertation Fieldwork Grant[]

May 1 2019 Deadline There is some conflicting information about when applicants should hear if we passed through Round 1. The website says we should be notified by August 1, but the confirmation e-mail say the end of August. Last year, notifications were sent on Aug 3 it seems. I don't know of anyone who's heard of anything yet (7/31/19)

Has anyone heard anything yet? The website is still saying to e-mail if we haven't heard by August 1, but I haven't e-mailed yet. Has anyone else e-mailed about this and gotten an update? (8/9/19)

Nov 1 submission took four months for the first round due to transition to online system so wouldn't be surprised if it's similar this time. Perhaps wait until September to email. (8/9/19) Yes, I think it's safer to go by what's listed in the confirmation email - end of August. Their online application system seems like it takes a little longer than the paper one, and I think the information on the website is still based on the paper system. (8/12/19)

Email today (8/13): advanced to second round (archaeology). Haven't received an email yet, but checked in the website and I have a review and a recommendation to advance to next round (8/13).

Just got an email from the foundation (10/10) and it said "there is no need for you to resubmit for the upcoming November 1st deadline"(!) I think it is a good sign?

>> 10/10 :>>Yes, that is a good sign :) I remember receiving my mail with the same sentence last year around this time. And, I did get the grant. So, I guess congratulations are in order!

PS: they send the results by post. In case, you don't hear from them by 1 November 2019, do get in touch with them.

(10/28, 2:58pm): Received a official approval email from the foundation.

Nov 1 2018 Deadline

Applied: 3 (Sociocultural), 3 (Archaeology)

Has anyone else applied to this or have an idea of when we'll hear back about the first round? (1/31)

Based on posts here from recent years, we should find out if we've made it through the first cut by 2/15. (2/2).

Any news? I haven't heard anything yet. (2/8)

No news still (2/15). Today we supposed to hear if we make it to the second round right?

Any news? (2/15)

Nothing here yet. Hopefully next week! (2/17)

Still nothing! (2/19) This is much later than in previous cycles...

Any news? (2/19)

I still haven't heard anything (2/20).

I feel like they might be adjusting to the new online only system...(2/20) <-- Good point.

I'm guessing we'll hear Friday, 2/22 (2/20)

This is the first year for online applications, correct? When I login to my application, it says "We will be conducting routine maintenance between Saturday, February 23rd at 10pm EST and Sunday, February 24th at 2am EST. As a result, this site will be inaccessible during this time." Is it possible that they will be posting results online like NSF? If so, we may not hear until Monday the 25th :( (2/20)

It's stressful not knowing, but I guess at this stage it doesn't really matter when we find out. If we don't move on to the second review we still have plenty of time to revise for the May submission, and if we do move on to the next phase there's nothing we need to do at this point, anyway. Knowing that doesn't stop me from refreshing my email every few minutes, but it should. (2/20)

RE: online application, the instructions page says "You will receive all notifications by e-mail." (2/20)

Alas, still nothing. The website says we should hear by March 1 at the latest, so at least that's just one more week. (2/22)

Nothing here, either. The end must be near for this first round of waiting. March is just around the corner. (2/22)

Anyone have news yet today? (2/25)

No news for me yet... but it has to be any day now (2/25)

This is getting a bit ridiculous.

I really hope we will not need to wait until Friday (2/25)

I think we'll hear tomorrow, but then again I thought that yesterday... (2/25)

My guess is at 4:45pm EST on March 1st haha (2/26)

The website says notification by March 1, but in the confirmation email that I received when I submitted, it DOES say "by the end of March". I had hoped it was a typo but maybe it is the website that is incorrect....(2/26)

At least if we hear back in late March it's just a short wait until mid-April to get the final notification...(2/26)

Still nothing (11:56 am, 2/27)

Here's to less than 36 more hours of torture (hopefully). (2/27)

...unless previous poster is right and we have until the end of March! (2/28)

From the WG website:

  • Stage One: Applications are screened against the General Criteria for Evaluation. All applicants will be notified as to whether or not they are successful at this stage. Approximately 50% of all applications are successful at this stage.  If you have not heard from the Foundation by August 1 (for the May 1 deadline) or March 1 (for the November deadline), please contact the Foundation for information on the progress of your application.

Yes, but...From the atuomated email confirming submission of my application:

"The Foundation operates a two-stage decision making process:

Stage One, applications are screened against the General Criteria for Evaluation. All applicants will be notified as to whether or not they are successful at this stage.  If you have not heard from the Foundation by the end of August (for the May 1 deadline) or by the end of March (for the November 1 deadline), please contact the Foundation for information on the progress of your application."

If I don't hear by 3/1 I'm going to reach out to follow up with Wenner Gren. There is some conflicting information between their website and the confirmation email.   <---  GOOD PLAN!!

I did the same as the above poster - emailed to inquire around 9:15 AM (3/1)

Got a response! "Thank you for your e-mail. Applicants will be notified regarding their stage 1 status next week. We apologize for the slight confusion, our website needs to be updated." (9:30 AM, 3/1)

Rejection email received 3/5/19 @ 11:04 am.

Advanced to second round, notified by email 3/5/19 @ 1:49pm EST.

Advanced to second round, notified by email 3/5/19 at 1:48 pm EST

Advanced to second round, notified by email 3/5/19 at 4:48 pm EST

Still nothing... 3/5/19 at 7:30pm - Advanced to second round, notified by email 3/6/19 at 10:50am EST

Declined, if you log into submission portal you can see your status there. 3/5 @ 3:30 EST

Advanced to second round...I think?? Still no email, but when I log in I can view reviewer comments, which are positive, and there's a bit that says "first round decision: move forward." I'm...cautiously celebratory? (3/6 3:07 PM Beirut time) ---> was anyone else who advanced able to see feedback? just curious, via the portal my applications simply says "submitted", and I'd be curious to see my comments since I'm a second time applicant who was previously declined in round 1.

Sorry to do this already, but does anyone have a sense if we'll still hear back about final decisions by April 15th? That's a really short turnaround from when we were notified about making it to the second round. (3/8/19)

>>Yes, they will. They get them back by 4/15 to allow those who didn't get it to be able to resubmit with corrections for the May deadline (3/12/19)

Late to the party: Advanced to the second round, notified by email 3/5/19 @ 1:46 pm EST. The only comments I received were: "Recommended to advance to the next round." I emailed WG to ask if there were additional comments associated with my application (knowing that other people received detailed comments). They said: "applicants will not receive comments on their application until the final stage of the application process" ... I wonder if this discrepancy has anything to do with the new online system?

3/21/19 - This was my second time making it through the first round. After my first submission I didn't get comments back when I made it through to the second round. I got all of my comments when I was declined for funding during second-round decisions. I also can't see any reviewer comments in my online portal - just "recommended to advance to the next round."

Email from Wenner-Gren 3/27/19: ---Anyone have plans to resubmit before hearing back about this round? I can't decide what to do.

"Some of you have contacted Wenner-Gren asking when you will receive news of the status of your application.  I want to provide you with an update.  We have just adopted a new grants management system.   Bringing it online is requiring us to make changes to our work flow, which is affecting how quickly we can turn decisions around.  It is likely we will not be able to contact you until very close to our next deadline, which is May 1, 2019.  If you would like to resubmit, we invite you to do so, even though you will not be able to benefit fully from our reviewers’ feedback.  Those of you who pursue this option should be sure to flag this fact in your response to the question on the application in which you explain how your thoughts and plans have changed.   We will brief our reviewers on the situation and encourage them to review your revised proposal as thoroughly and fairly as they can."

--and computers are supposed to make things easier! I am not going to do the blind reapply because I am already in the field and I need the money to extend into the Fall - but good luck to those of you that do it!

(4/12) Just received an email requesting more information! Also telling me there is no need to resubmit! (x3)

4/15 - I haven't yet received an email, but when I logged in to the online application I could see my status and reviews. --> do you have requests for additional budget information? or just the reviews?

4/19 - After you complete the request for more information, do they usually notifiy the recipients via mail instead of email?

4/30 - Anything...anyone...? --> nothing yet, maybe it will be via snail mail instead of email?

(9:49 am CDT) Got another request to further revise my budget. Also saying I won't be notified by tomorrow.

(4/30, 3pm EST) Received official acceptance letter and confirmation of funding (by email, with link to updated portal application).

Finalist notifications went out on 1/15/19

Recipient notifications went out 2/25/19

Anyone have info on when they usually send rejections? And why it's not at the same time?

---the official announcement of winners won't come out for another 5-6 weeks, so it could be that they are making sure the recipients are all accepting before sending out rejections
