- My understanding is that this request means you should include complete contact information in your application (best place is on the c.v.), rather than the letters themselves. - This seems like they are hiring one Americanist and one Romanticist/Victorianist, so "two positions" might not be completely correct in the context of the "Early American 2011" list.
- Looking at the other wikis, it doesn't appear that they were looking for Americanists?
- Have any Americanists received a dossier/sample request from Cornell? [Not me: I heard that this is a department that really doesn't support its Americanists and that insiders doubted an Americanist hire would come out of this search. Certinly the matierals requests on the other two wikis would seem to bear that out. Am I right?]
- So, take it for what you will, but I've gotten some info from a friend at Cornell. They did intend to hire both an Americanist and a Victorianist but there was an internal conflict over the constitution of the search committee, leading them to only go forward with the British side of the hire. They haven't contacted any of the Americanist candidates about this becasue there is some hope of conducting the Americanist search in the spring, but this is still uncertain.

- If this is a spousal hire, people should be happy about that. Our profession needs to be more relationship/significant other friendly. The last four women, and one male that my home department hired while I was a grad student were all in their mid to late thirties, all single and without significant others. Of course, all of that is fine on the one hand, but our profession has historically not done a good job of enabling or valuing relationships... If Fairfield trying to remedy that historical problem, then good for them.

- 11/9: According to JIL, the listing "Expired from JIL database 05 Nov 2010" -- I don't think that's necessarily a sign the job is cancelled. The ad is still clearly up on the Chronicle.
