NOTES AND QUERIES:
--This is awfully late to advertise for a T/T position. Does anyone know why they aren't looking for a VAP if they've just lost someone? This smells of an internal candidate.
- Don't know the story, but this same school is also advertising a TT job in Renaissance with the same deadlines. Maybe they just had the funding for these lines approved very late . . .?
- Jobs come up all season now. Last year a tt job at Univ of Georgia came up right around this same time.
- Looks like an attempt to beat a hiring freeze. BSU is facing a 13 million budget cut in fall.
- The scoop is that I, the current Early Americanist, accepted a TT job at another location to end a dual career/dual household situation. I would add that I am very sorry to leave the department as my colleagues are a truly collegial, supportive, and generous group. Our chair worked magic to get two new hiring lines to fill two recent TT departures. Please apply!
- Thanks very much for the info. And good luck with the new job.
--What type of additional materials were requested on 4/14?
- --Writing sample (20-25 pages) and teaching philosophy statement.
- Thanks--guess I'm already out of the running. Good luck!

What's the deal? Nobody's heard anything at all from them?
FWIW, Generalist 2011 lists an MLA interview scheduled 12/22 for a generalist job also advertised by this dept. Not sure if that means interviews for the Americanist position have also been scheduled, but there it is.
The listing asks for "three professional references including names, addresses and phone numbers." Does anyone know whether this means we should send letters, or just a list of references?
- My understanding is that this request means you should include complete contact information in your application (best place is on the c.v.), rather than the letters themselves. If you do include the reference information on the cv, you might say something like, "I've included my CV, which includes complete contact information for my references."

NOTES AND QUERIES:
- Cross-posted at Romanticism, Victorian/19th 2011 & Restoration/18th-Century 2011
- This seems like they are hiring one Americanist and one Romanticist/Victorianist, so "two positions" might not be completely correct in the context of the "Early American 2011" list.
- Looking at the other wikis, it doesn't appear that they were looking for Americanists?
- Have any Americanists received a dossier/sample request from Cornell? [Not me: I heard that this is a department that really doesn't support its Americanists and that insiders doubted an Americanist hire would come out of this search. Certinly the matierals requests on the other two wikis would seem to bear that out. Am I right?]
- So, take it for what you will, but I've gotten some info from a friend at Cornell. They did intend to hire both an Americanist and a Victorianist but there was an internal conflict over the constitution of the search committee, leading them to only go forward with the British side of the hire. They haven't contacted any of the Americanist candidates about this becasue there is some hope of conducting the Americanist search in the spring, but this is still uncertain.
- So classic.
- e-mail 12/23: search for Americanist postponed to next year.
- Does it say whether it is postponed until next calendar year or academic year?
- I'm assuming they mean next academic year: "We have been authorized to search for an assistant professor in American literature next year, and would like to keep your dossier active for that upcoming search."

NOTES AND QUERIES:
- Cross-posted at Generalist 2011 & Romanticism, Victorian/19th 2011
- Nothing against Edgewood, but $43,000 is not, as the posting claims, a competitive salary. The lowest salary listed in last year's Wiki is $44,000, but most are well into the 50s.
- The deadline is Nov. 15, but the JIL status says MLA interviews have been scheduled. Does anyone know if they're still taking applications?
- 11/05 MLA JIL has job status changed to "Other" . . . perhaps the earlier status was a mistake?
- 11/05 Confirmed position is still open and accepting applications to begin review on 11/15.
- 12/1 dossier request

NOTES AND QUERIES:
- Cross-posted at 20-21 c. American 2011
- Please note, under "required qualifications," the statement that "An internal candidate has been identified."
- Attention ABDs: The ad specifies "Ph.D. in English (in hand by August 2010)," which seems very early for an entry-level position. A typo perhaps?
- Note the following comments from "20-21 c. American":
- "It is essentially a spousal hire. Not really an open position at all. Stay away. Don't get your hopes up.
- Well, that explains the insanely early deadline. Nice way to weed folks out on a technicality.
- Thank you for posting this stuff about the internal candidate. I've been to other sites where, at the end of the job search season, said wiki has who got the position and identifies "internal hire," "spousal hire" etc... It's very helpful. That said, did two separate people post this and confirm the information? Thanks.
- The original ad includes the language about the "internal candidate" and a second poster confirmed it."
- Today's (10/1) job list states that interviews for the MLA have already been scheduled!
- 10/8: Note the following, posted at 20-21 c. American: "1) The position has a rolling deadline; review of applications was set to start Oct 1, 2010; 2) The pulldown menu box in the JIL ad stating "MLA interviews have already been scheduled for this position" was incorrectly checked. The search committee has not yet even begun review of applications. 3) Also note the JIL ad has been corrected to state the successful candidate must have Ph.D. in hand by August 2011, not August 2010 --Jim Simon, department chair"
- If this is a spousal hire, people should be happy about that. Our profession needs to be more relationship/significant other friendly. The last four women, and one male that my home department hired while I was a grad student were all in their mid to late thirties, all single and without significant others. Of course, all of that is fine on the one hand, but our profession has historically not done a good job of enabling or valuing relationships... If Fairfield trying to remedy that historical problem, then good for them.

NOTES AND QUERIES:
- Cross-posted at 20-21 c. American 2011 and African American 2011
- Does this job exist any more? It's no longer in the JIL, not listed on their HR site, and the link in the chronicle to apply online is broken. Maybe their funding was cut for this position? There should be another 6 days to submit applications...
- 11/9: According to JIL, the listing "Expired from JIL database 05 Nov 2010" -- I don't think that's necessarily a sign the job is cancelled. The ad is still clearly up on the Chronicle. I'm not sure the online link ever worked, and seems beside the point anyway, as the ad clearly asks for a mailed application. I'm not assuming it is cancelled unless and until someone who applied actually gets a notice to that effect.
- 11/16: The job is indeed still listed on the University website. I am assuming that the search is still on...
- 12/5: Ads expire after a certain amount of time. It means nothing.
- 12/14: I just realized a couple of days ago that I never received a confirmation that my materials arrived at Fontbonne. Have people received the obligatory email or letter that their applications have landed safely at the school?
- 12/16: Heard through the grapevine that the search committee met last week. They will not be interviewing at MLA, but will be contacting people in January for phone interviews.

- Has anyone else still not heard anything? Did only a few rejection letters go out?
- I'm the person who received the rejection mentioned above, but only because I corresponded directly with the (very kind) search committee chair about something else. From what I understand, if you didn't get a request for a writing sample on top of the dossier request, you are unfortunately no longer on the short list, which was initially narrowed to about 20 people. And now that campus interviews have been scheduled, I think the decisions have pretty much all been made. Sorry if this is bad news, but I'm in the same boat.
- Ah, gotcha. Thanks so much for the info.

i heard that the emphasis here is definitely on media studies but that that could change depending on what they get... i guess that's not really news.
- Judging by the materials requests posted over at 20-21 c American, they might not have been interested in the "colonial to ..." part of their search.
- Nice of them to get their rejections out in a timely manner. I loathe getting rejection letters in April for a position I'd given up on months ago.

NOTES AND QUERIES:
Q: A "letters request," beyond the "three letters of reference" initially required by the application?
A: The ad in Oct. on the jil did not ask for letters up front. Received a "Dossier Request" that expressed interest in further pursuing candidacy. I imagine if one applied after they changed the ad to ask for initial letters, one might not hear anything until they decide on interviews.
R. So the "further pursuit" of which you speak is in fact a catching up to the later ad's requirements?
R. In a sense...but, no, the chair didn't take the time to inform me of an incomplete application. It is rather as described and like every other request for more materials I have received. Sorry, I don't mean to produce anxiety--just informing others who may have applied earlier like I did.
did anyone else who applied online for this position get a confirmation email? That application website was a little sketchy; I'm trying to decide whether to email the department and make sure that they received it.
I did receive confirmation that my electronic application was received. If I were you, I would contact the department. I agree with you that the electronic application process was a bit whack.
Q: Does anyone have an update about this position? Are campus visits over? Has an offer been made? (2/22)

NOTES AND QUERIES:
--Yes, transcripts were asked for in original ad. Thought I submitted them, but I guess not.
R. Same here. But I should of course prefer to think of their request as expressing further interest in my candidacy, like all the others. . .
Well, they just sent me a request something I thought I had sent too...
--Anyone worried about the fact that the person soliciting the additional materials is writing from a gmail account rather than an official university one, despite the signature line (and department website) indicating that this person has one?
Yes... deeply, deeply worried.
Were the interviews scheduled by phone or e-mail?
I'm wondering about the date of 1/12 as far as a campus visit scheduled. I interviewed for this job and was told during the interview that they could not notify candidates concerning a campus visit until the week of 1/25.

NOTES AND QUERIES:
was the materials request for another writing sample (beyond the one initially requested in the application?
- Different versions of the job posting asked for different sets of materials--at least one didn't ask for a writing sample.
- but some of the ads did ask for the writing sample up front, yes? -- Yes, the ad I saw and I replied to asked for an example of scholarly work (25-30 pages) and evidence of teaching excellence.
- Yes - I am very confused about what these requests are actually requesting. The ad to which I responded called for a writing sample and evidence of teaching excellence. Will those who received a request elaborate on what they originally sent in? ----they asked for a writing sample (I did not send one in originally--it was not listed on the JIL).
- did everyone who applied receive acknowledgment of receipt of their application? I did not... hmmmm....
- No, I didn't either. Not a peep from them. ---You should contact them. Especially if you have an email or mail receipt to prove that you sent materials in on time. I just found out that application materials at another university were never received. The search chair forwarded them on after seeing my email submission dated prior to the deadline.
