Auburn University (AL) - TT Assistant Professor of English: Early African American Literature[]

The Department of English at Auburn University invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in early African American literature, to begin Fall 2015. The teaching load is 2-2, with assignments in upper-division and graduate literature courses as well as teaching in Auburn’s core curriculum. Individuals joining our current group of specialists in African American and early American literature will be working with us to strengthen and grow our undergraduate literature major as well as to enrich our offerings at the graduate level.

Minimum Qualifications: Required qualifications include a PhD in English, American Studies, or a closely allied area by the August 16, 2015, starting date; a strong research and teaching specialization and an academic background in early African American literature; evidence of successful teaching experience at the college/university level; evidence of potential for excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in 18th- and 19th-century African American literature; significant potential for successful research, publication, and other scholarly/professional activities; interest in teaching core curriculum courses in core literature and/or first-year composition; and strong potential as a colleague taking part in the life and work of a unified department of English Studies (including majors in creative writing, literature, and professional writing; graduate concentrations in creative writing, literature, and rhetoric and composition, and a graduate program in technical and professional communication). The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment; excellent communication skills required.

Desired Qualifications: Desired qualifications include a record of publication in the field; successful experience teaching African American literature at the college/university level; successful experience teaching first-year composition and/or sophomore literature. We seek candidates with demonstrated commitments to collaborative teaching, scholarship, and service, and with demonstrated research strengths in one or more of the following: gender studies, diaspora studies, digital humanities, southern studies, American slavery, and African American print culture.

The Department of English at Brandeis University seeks to appoint a tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in American literature to 1865, beginning Fall 2015. Position: The Department of English in the College of Arts and Humanities at California State University, Fresno seeks applicants for a tenure-track, academic year position as an Assistant Professor in American Literature with an emphasis in Chican@ and/or African American Literature. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate students, conduct scholarly and applied research, and engage in service-related activities. Primary teaching responsibilities will be in American literature, core courses for the major, General Education courses, as well as regular topics courses in area(s) of specialty.

Overview: We believe that the best English classrooms are communities in which teachers and students work together to analyze, construct, and apply meaning. Class size is typically under 25. First-year writing courses are taught by our graduate students. Faculty members have ample opportunity to design courses in response to changes in the field, student interests, and their own scholarly leanings. Our faculty is comprised of scholars of literature, rhetoric, and composition, as well as creative writers. It includes winners of the Pulitzer Prize, the American Book Award, and several Fulbright scholars. The English Department is home to The Normal School literary magazine and three other literary journals. It also has an active Sigma Tau Delta chapter. Students and faculty alike have a strong sense of community relationship, manifested in their organizing of the Central Valley-wide Young Writers Conference for over thirty years, and in their serving as base for the Chicano Writers and Artists Association (CWAA). In 2007, the department also hosted the national MELUS conference. Every year the English department organizes the Undergraduate Conference on Multiethnic Literatures of the Americas (UCMLA), a successful local conference with potential for growth. Now in its sixth year, UCMLA has foregrounded multiethnic literatures, provided a platform for presentation of undergraduate scholarship in the field, gathered graduate students and faculty together in event planning, and brought to campus such writers and critics as Cherrie Moraga, Roxane Gay, Samiya Bashir, and Jorge Huerta among others as keynote speakers.

Required Education: An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in American Literature, American Studies, Ethnic Studies, or other closely-related disciplines from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required; however, applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered. For appointment, the doctorate must be completed by the date of appointment (8/13/2015).

Required Experience: 1)Successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level; 2) Clear research agenda, and 3) Ability to demonstrate commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications: 1) Additional teaching and/or research expertise in 19th-century and early American Literature; 2) Experience with conference planning, and 3) Interest in connecting research to California's Central Valley community.

California State University, Northridge (CA) - TT Assistant Professor, Nineteenth-Century Transatlantic Literature and Culture -- SKYPE INTERVIEWS SCHEDULED[]

Qualifications: Candidates must have a Ph.D. in English or a related field, awarded prior to August 19, 2015. Specialization should be in Nineteenth-Century Transatlantic Literature and Culture with an emphasis on the long nineteenth century (circa 1770-1900). Secondary interests may include the poetry, prose, or theater from this historical period; the literature and culture of the Black Atlantic; transnational approaches to literary and visual print culture, travel and exploration, migration and diaspora, slavery and abolition, colonialism and anti-colonial resistance, or indigenous culture and revolution; the literature and culture of reform movements; the Gothic. An interest in critical theory, Romantic writers, and/or realist or naturalist writers from the period is desirable. Candidate must demonstrate ability to effectively work with a diverse student population.

Evidence of teaching effectiveness and potential for successful research, publication and other scholarly/professional/creative activities required, with publication in the field of specialization desirable.

Responsibilities: The University especially seeks individuals who will contribute to both their chosen disciplines and the University’s commitment to student success. All faculty are expected to serve on departmental and/or university committees, contribute to teaching effectiveness, and demonstrate successful research, publication and other scholarly/professional/creative activities in their field of specialization. The standard teaching load at Northridge is 12 units (4/4) per semester (3/3 for the first two years), although competitive reassigned time is available for research and/or curriculum development. All faculty in the Department of English teach a variety of classes, including General Education courses as well as undergraduate and graduate courses in their specialization. The successful candidate for this position will likely be asked to teach surveys of British and/or American literature and will be encouraged to develop new upper-level and graduate courses in her/his area of expertise. While all full-time faculty remain eligible to teach lower division writing courses, the majority of these courses are taught by lecturer faculty. In practice, lower division writing courses are only assigned to full-time faculty members with specializations in composition or rhetoric, or to those specifically requesting such courses.

Has anyone heard anything?  I would have expected them to schedule interviews by now!  

  • When they interviewed for this position four years or so ago (MLA 2009-10), they didn't call me for an interview until two days before the conference--last minute as you can get. And speaking of: take note. Peter Jaros is no slouch, and his ouster signals that expectations for productivity are very high.
  • Wow.  I haven't seen him in a few months, I guess, but are you sure this is for Peter's job?!  The search for someone to do C19 and teach C20 as well made this seem like they wanted someone complementary.  (That's also just incredibly hard to believe: he's very definitely no slouch).  Regardless, thanks for the tip re: the late notice.

The Department of English and Foreign Languages at Georgia Regents University seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in American Literature, to begin August 2015. The ideal candidate will have teaching experience and a research agenda in American literature prior to 1875. Secondary specialization in Native American studies is especially desirable, as is an ability to add to the department's existing strengths in Southern literary studies, especially Native South.   • Quite possibly the clunkiest, most antiquated HR system I've encountered in all my years on the market. Also, how, exactly, are we supposed to upload our letters of reference/recommendation ourselves? Fun!
  • Agreed.  And regarding the confidential letters of recommendation, I'm planning on having Interfolio mail those separately.  Not that I have much choice, but I'd be curious to hear if anyone has other strategies for this.
  • I wrote the search chair, E. Nicole Meyer, on Thursday of last week (12/4), asking her where and to whom the committe would like applicants to send their letters of recommendation (since we obviously can't upload them ourselves), but I never got a response. I decided earlier this afternoon (12/9) to have Interfolio send them to her electronically. We'll see what happens.
  • I called Human Resources, and the person I spoke to said I could have Interfolio email her the letters, and then she'd add them to the application.

The Department of English and Comparative Literature at Hobart and William Smith Colleges invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor, tenure track, with research and teaching expertise in American literature of the "long" 19th century. Area(s) of specialization within the period are open, but candidates should bring broad competency in American literature up to the Civil War, as well as demonstrated interest and ability in teaching poetry. The Department values intellectual diversity and supports a wide range of critical and theoretical approaches. The Department also welcomes interdisciplinarity in teaching and research, in keeping with the Colleges' longstanding emphasis on interdisciplinary liberal arts education.

The department seeks to fill a tenure-eligible Assistant Professorship in American Literature to begin in August of 2015.
