  • Trouble applying? Some people have had difficulties because the system seems to require three extra documents besides those required (cover letter; current CV; statement of teaching philosophy; writing sample (20–25 pages); a copy of transcripts for each graduate degree held). Those extra spaces are NOT for recommendations (for those you simply enter the person's email). Rather, they are for optional documents. If you cannot finish your application without submitting in those slots, please just upload three blank documents. That will satisfy the system and the documents listed above will satisfy the search committee.

This is a full-time position with appointment in the Department of English and Comparative Literature. The initial appointment is for one year with renewal for three and a half more years based on satisfactory performance.

American Studies is the academic center for civic engagement at Columbia, with a flexible curriculum that introduces students to American texts and American history—through which they gain a deeper sense of the ideas and vocabulary shaping contemporary public discourse in culture, history, and politics. We are seeking a dedicated undergraduate teacher and scholar who shares this commitment to civic education and is prepared to teach courses in early American literature and culture, supervise senior theses, advise majors, participate in public programs, and contribute to the Center’s partnerships with organizations inside and outside the University. The Center maintains a close relationship with the Core Curriculum of Columbia College, and the Lecturer will be expected each year to teach one section of the “Contemporary Civilization” course on western political philosophy required of second-year College students. In addition to this course, the candidate will teach three courses in American Studies.

Applicants must hold the Ph.D. at the time of application. Please submit a letter of application, vita and contact information for three references.

As part of a continuing commitment to building a culturally diverse intellectual community and advancing scholars from underrepresented groups in higher education, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Carolina Postdoctoral Program for Faculty Diversity is pleased to announce the availability of postdoctoral research appointments for a period of two years. The purpose of the Program is to develop scholars from underrepresented groups for possible tenure track appointments at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and other research universities. (Please indicate that ECL is your department of interest when applying.)

Interested applicants who will have completed their doctoral degree no later than July 1, 2019 and no earlier than July 1, 2014 are eligible to apply.
