We seek a colleague who can bring a global perspective to the teaching of Nineteenth-Century American literature, and whose secondary fields include critical theory and/or queer literatures.

The position requires undergraduate and graduate (M.A. level) teaching in Nineteenth-Century American literature, mentoring and advising undergraduate and graduate students, developing ongoing scholarly projects in one’s area of specialty, and ongoing committee and service assignments. The Department of English at LEHMAN COLLEGE of The CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Early American Literature, beginning Fall 2020. Candidates must have an active record of research and scholarship, and a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. We seek a specialist in American Literature before 1900 whose research focuses on Anglo-American Literature (Colonial, Early National, and/or 19th-Century), Native American Studies, early African American Literature, Transatlantic Studies, Latin-American Writing, and/or intersections among these traditions. Comparative, multicultural, multilingual approaches are welcome, as is analysis of gender and sexuality or environmental modalities. We welcome scholars whose work explores the genealogy of the American literary and cultural present, ideally with a comparativist perspective that reflects the diverse histories of our students.
In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in early and nineteenth-century American literature, the successful candidate will be expected to teach core English Department literature courses, as well as general education and composition courses. The candidate will also be expected to be an active scholar (via conference presentations, journal articles, and book publication) and to provide service to the department, college, and university through advising, committee membership, and administrative assignments normally associated with a full-time tenure-track academic appointment. Evening teaching may be required.
Professorial ranks at Lehman teach 18 hours (6 courses) per year. Teaching is reduced for untenured professorial faculty by eight courses over the first five years for scholarly development. Lehman College and CUNY funding is available through competitive grants for research, travel, and professional development. All faculty are encouraged to seek external funding.

Job description The position includes teaching, supervision, and responsibility for courses and course development at first and second cycle levels (Bachelor’s and Master’s levels). A significant amount of teaching focuses on Teacher Education.
Basic Qualifications An individual is qualified for employment as Senior Lecturer if he/she has proven teaching skills and possesses a doctorate in English, specializing in American literature or has the equivalent scholarly expertise or other professional skills that are of significance to the position’s demands and job description. Teaching is primarily conducted in English, but the applicant is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within the first two years of employment.
Coursework or training in higher education teaching, or the equivalent, is advantageous.

This is a unique opportunity for an individual to join the faculty at the newest University of California campus and to engage in long-term program building. The English department at the University of North Alabama invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in early American literature at the rank of Assistant Professor.
