The Department of English at Colorado State University invites applications for an entry-level position of Assistant Professor of English specializing in 20th and 21st Century Literature. We are seeking a scholar and teacher working in any field of 20th and 21st century literature with a focus on one or more of the following areas: the environment, ecology, the anthropocene, environmental justice, bioregionalism, or animal studies. QUALIFICATIONS: The University of Minnesota, Morris seeks a tenure-track assistant professor in creative writing (any genre) and/or environmental literature and theory (any period or area). Candidates must have degree in hand (either PhD for literary scholars or appropriate terminal degree for creative writers) by time of appointment. Williams College (MA) - Assistant Professor in Literature of the Oceans - OFFER DECLINED[]

  • I don't know which is more insane --- your presumption that only white people have experience in outdoor eductation, or your implication that the Penn St. English Department is home to reactionary racists who are trying to find creative and legal ways to exclude non-whites from their department.
  • Wow, the first comment is probably the dumbest comment I've ever read on this wiki.
  • Maybe the ruth is in the middle - subconscious class preference? What would say?
  • The real insanity, it seems, is having a position at all that requires outdoor training for a lectureship in English. These are completely incommensureate forms of training. Add to that the EXTREMELY WELL DOCUMENTED whiteness of outdoor education (if you don't have anecdotal experience of this fact, a quick google search delivers all you need to know) and the second two comments to this thread look oblivious at best and, more realistically, offensive.
  • I posted the first comment. Not sure there is a way to productively respond to categorical claims that my critique is "insane" or "the dumbest." Honestly, it just makes me sad because any further comment I'll make is probably shouting into the abyss. Nonetheless, I'll clarify: as the poster just above noted, outdoor education has a whiteness problem -- and there are nuanced cultural and socioeconomic reasons for this that both scholars and popular culture writers have explored (when the nytimes publishes an article "why are our parks so white," this is a mainstream critique). I did not in any way suggest that the Penn State English Department "is home to reactionary racists." But "culture fit" is a real means of exclusion with real effects. I almost can't believe that I have to say--on a message board with literature PhDs, presumably--that intent and non-intent / consciousness and subconsciousness are not binaries. It is possible for well-meaning people to perpetuate racist cultural norms. I want to say "I can't believe I have to say that," but I won't, because then I'd be insane or the dumbest. If any of the above critiquers of my original comment care to respond with something besides ad hominem attacks, I'm all ears.
  • I posted the second comment. You explicitly linked this job ad to Donald Trump, thereby linking the search committee to Trump's fascist, racsist, xenophobic tendencies. So I think it is reasonble for me to think that the implication was that the search committee is racist --- not to mention the fact that you said the subtext of their ad was "no poc need apply." Also, if the search committe decided that this parcticular set of skills is needed for this position, how is it of any relevance that those skills happen to be held disproportionately by whites? You seem to be implying that any skills required for a job must be held by members of all identity groups in equal proportion to their share of the population, or else requiring that skill is racist. You're saying that they shouldn't require this skill/training since POC are underrepresented in this skill/training. Do you not see the implications of that? By that logic, the requirement for a PhD is racist, too. Yes, I think that is insane.

University of Utah (UT) - Annie Clark Tanner Fellowship in Environmental Humanities (Creative Non-Fiction / Environmental Writing)[]

Tanner Humanities Center and the Environmental Humanities Program of the University of Utah announce a competition for the Annie Clark Tanner Teaching Fellowship. This fellowship seeks an environmental writer to offer classes in Utah’s Environmental Humanities Graduate Program.

Environmental Humanities aims to produce an interdisciplinary, intellectual, and creative space where students reflect on what it means to be "human" in a world of entangled human, animal, and other presences; that encourages creative and collaborative exchanges; and enables students to think in a forward fashion both about new forms of environmental leadership and stewardship, and about the intersection of ecology and environmental justice.

The fellowship will consist of a Spring 2018 semester-long residency, with possibilities to extend to include a second semester. The successful applicant will: Teach two classes: an Environmental Humanities Writing Seminar and a creative non-fiction writing course Mentor students to cultivate their writing and analytical abilities; Deliver a work-in-progress talk during the semester in residence. Applicants are asked to submit a portfolio that includes: A one-page cover letter explaining your interest in the position and qualities as a teacher; A CV; A one page course description and a syllabus for each class; Two peer recommendations.
