Aarhus University - Lecturer in Aesthetics and Communication

Applications are invited for the position of fluent-speaker-of-English lecturer (foreign lecturer) at the English Degree Program in the Department of Aesthetics and Communication at Aarhus University. The position is tenable from 1 February 2013. The successful candidate must be a fluent speaker of English and must hold an academic degree in communication, Anglophone media, or related fields at Master's Degree level or higher. The successful candidate must also submit evidence of effective teaching in the interdisciplinary areas of communication and media studies, including film studies. Desired areas of specialization include communication theory, including intercultural communication theory; media theory, as well as such areas as digital media, online social media, global media, and UK and US film. Preference will be given to candidates who are able to develop and teach obligatory undergraduate courses in film studies, mass media and mass communication; interpersonal and intercultural communication theories and strategies; and the media's social, cultural, and historical contexts in the United Kingdom, United States and other English-speaking countries. The successful candidate will also be expected to develop elective courses in the area of specialization and to supervise MA theses within the field.This is a teaching position (maximum twelve hours per week during two 14-week semesters, plus related examining and supervision work) with few administrative responsibilities. The language of instruction in all courses is English. Research work is not a requirement of the position, but there will be time for the lecturer to pursue research. The successful candidate is expected to be skilled in using contemporary IT-based tools for writing, communication, and teaching. Brock University - Assistant Professor of Film Studies - CAMPUS INTERVIEW SCHEDULED

The Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film at Brock University invites applications for a probationary tenure-track position in Film Studies. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and will commence July 1, 2013. The position is subject to final budgetary approval.

The Department is seeking candidates who specialize in Canadian Cinema and have additional scholarly and research expertise in the area of Canadian popular culture. The ideal candidate will also have experience teaching a range of courses in film studies including introductory courses. Applicants must have a PhD in film studies or a related discipline, and strong teaching and publication records. The successful candidate will also be eligible to teach and supervise graduate students in the Interdisciplinary M.A. in Popular Culture program.

With over 650 majors, the Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film offers undergraduate programs in Film Studies, Popular Culture, Media and Communication Studies, and Business Communication. Its innovative M.A. program in Popular Culture is unique in Canada. All of our programs are rooted in a strong tradition of interdisciplinary teaching and research. I do not believe this is a partner hire. I am pretty sure they skipped assistant level altogether and went for a tenured search. It appears that the cadidates are Kathleen McHugh and Michelle Bigenho, and possibly John Durham Peters. There is some talk about restructuring, and that might be looking for a chair. From these names, it looks to be the case. The lack of any assistant-level campus talk is disconcerting considering the fact that the job call was neither open rank nor asst/associate, but specifically assistant. Call it sour grapes on my part, but this search was handled poorly all around.  I got around 30 rejection e-mails all at once from this school, too.  And all you have to do is read the thread of things that happened during this search to see others of the multiple mistakes made along the way. The search has been closed (i.e. "failed"). It seems that the English faculty and the Film Studies faculty could not agree on anyone who could satisfy both of their respective (and, frankly, conflicting) desires for the hire. I agree that it was not handled well. Personally, I've found it to be the most frustrating experience I've had on the market.

Thanks for the information! St. Olaf, if you're listening -- please resolve your internal conflicts before you post the job again. It's disrespectful to applicants to do otherwise. Yes, the market is bad enough that most of us will apply again despite the way you handled things this year. The MFA degree prepares students for professional careers in film, video, and digital media and for teaching at the university level. A dual emphasis on production and theory classes prepares the student to undertake an academic position that may require the teaching of both film studies and media production.

The successful candidate will teach at the graduate level in the MFA Program in Documentary Film and Video and at the undergraduate level in the Film and Media Studies program. I have received no communications from the University. (2/27/13) OK. Wow. Jeez. That's really something. I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that, on paper, this semed a really great gig. (3/4) Is it permissible to interview just one candidate for a position that required national announcements?  Seems like most institutions that are planning on an internal hire still invite at least one other candidate to campus.

(3/5) It's not unheard of. Such situations can indicate a department in conflict/to be wary of, but of course, I'm sure there are exceptions.

The program combines creative studio courses in film, animation, and writing with intensive study of the history, aesthetics, and social implications of film and allied media forms. MCS currently offers an undergraduate major and a minor (planning for a graduate program is underway). The successful candidate will contribute to the interdisciplinary and interdepartmental teaching of MCS, as well as work with faculty in related disciplines. Candidates should have a broad knowledge of the media and be prepared to teach courses in media histories, theories, genres, institutions, and/or policies, as well as comparative courses in media and their diasporas. Capacity to work across the humanities and social sciences is of importance, as we are seeking candidates who will blend political economy with cultural studies, empirical audience research with ethnography, and textual with content analysis. Additional expertise in one or more of the areas that represent the strengths of the College is also desirable: gender and sexuality, minority discourse, ethnic studies, colonialism and postcoloniality, popular culture, and performance studies; production skills and innovative multimedia pedagogy a plus. The ideal candidate will hold an advanced degree in Media Studies or a closely related field (PhD preferred--ABD considered) and show an active interest in critical/theoretical approaches to: (a) web-based production and consumption of still/moving images and music/sound; (b) interactive games and virtual reality; (c) mobile media; and/or (d) social media and the public sphere. Pluses include: research program and ability to develop an undergraduate course in (a) animation, (b) twenty-first century global media, (c) questions of ethics, privacy and the politics of digital exchange, or (d) the interface between cognition and media. In addition to teaching both core and advanced courses in media studies, the successful candidate, depending on field, may also have the opportunity to teach production.

The Cinema Studies Program at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time non-continuing faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences. Appointment to this position will be for a term of one year, with the possibility of renewal for an additional year, beginning fall 2013, and will carry the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor.

The incumbent will teach a total of five courses in the history and theory of cinema and media, with an emphasis on technological practices in social and cultural context. We would value additional work in Early Cinema and consider as secondary strengths knowledge of non-Western cinemas.

Cinema, modern culture’s primary art form, is central to the media traditions and industries that structure contemporary society, and Oberlin College’s Cinema Studies Program is committed to exploring cinema in its critical, creative, historical, cultural, technological, and comparative media contexts. On the idea that to genuinely understand cinema and other media one must create media forms as well as analyze them, the Program integrates the critical study and production of cinema and related media, and majors may take both hands-on media production as well as critical studies courses.

University of California, Davis - Mellon Visiting Assistant Professor in Digital Cultures - SKYPE INTERVIEW SCHEDULED

The University of California, Davis, announces a two-year Visiting Assistant Professorship sponsored by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. We are looking for new or recent Ph.D.s in digital cultures, for an appointment from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2015. The position will be housed in one of the following departments, depending on the successful candidate’s background: English, Cinema and Technocultural Studies (CaTS), Design, or Science and Technology Studies (STS). Researchers and practitioners who hold a Ph.D. (or who will hold a Ph.D. by July 1, 2013) in any relevant discipline are encouraged to apply. Fields of expertise may include (but are not limited to): software studies, gaming, computer science, social media, surveillance technologies, hactivism/tactical media, digital design, mobile media culture, and intellectual property issues. Candidates who have technical skills (coding, media design, etc.) in addition to expertise in the humanities or humanistic social sciences are especially welcome.

The Mellon Visiting Assistant Professor will participate in the Mellon Research Initiative in Digital Cultures. Duties include teaching three courses per year (one graduate and two undergraduate), and organizing colloquia and workshops.

• Don't know if anyone's still around, but there are a lot of "Position Filled" and "Offer Accepted" notifications on this page but with no information on who's getting these jobs. I obviously don't want names, but some idea of qualifications, specialties, what programs they're coming out of, if they're ABDs, etc. would give the rest of us a picture of how this whole thing is shaking out. In years past, I noticed this type of info was frequently added once a job was filled. Any hints on any of these filled positions would be much appreciated!
