NOTES:

  • This listing is almost exactly the same as a successful search from 2 years ago.  Is this a new position, or is their new hire moving on already?
  • Tempe, AZ is in Maricopa County, which is Sherriff Arpaio territory. Eek!
  • If I remember corectly, previous searches (two years in a row) were conducted out of the Film and Media component of ASU's Ehglish Dept, probably a better fit for Studies PhDs. My sense, fwiw, is that these hybrid production/studies searches are hugely problematic (MFAs and PhDs in same search pool).  Plus, they have Arpaio (^) and no water. Whatevs.
  • The one from 2 years ago was in theater & film history at the Herberger Institute (I was interviewed so I remember it well :-) ).  The department is theater & film production, with film studies over in the English dept., which makes it an awkward fit for a film studies PhD.  I believe the person they hired through the last search was a theater PhD who also worked in film.
  • Here's the listing from last time: http://academicjobs.wikia.com/wiki/Theater_2011-2012#Arizona_State_University_-_Assistant_Professor.2C_Theatre_.26_Film_History
  • Thanks for the reminder. Quite a different job.
  • This is the same position.  Previous hire relocated to teach with spouse.  FWIW a couple of current lecturer/adjunct types seem to match this description.

  • 2/19 Has the deadline for this one passed? when was this posted?
  • On h.net, the closing date for this one is 3/18....how did they already hold interviews if the deadline hasn't passed yet?
  • The original job posting on the CIA website didn't include a deadline. You could always try contacting them to see if they are still accepting applications.
  • Has anyone who interviewed with CIA heard back yet? 4/10

Connecticut College - TT Asst. Professor, Film Studies - CAMPUS INTERVIEWS SCHEDULED[]

The Film Studies program at Connecticut College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Film Studies beginning in August 2014. Required: Ph.D. in hand at time of appointment, a record of outstanding scholarly work, excellent teaching on a college level, and experience teaching introductory and advanced film theory and criticism courses. The person we hire will be responsible for teaching the program’s core courses, Film 101 and Film 202, as well as advanced courses in the candidate’s specialization. Applicants who specialize in all areas of film theory and criticism will be considered. The Film Studies Program recognizes the need to support and enhance our students’ media, visual, technology, and information literacies through the close textual analyses of a varied range of moving image representations and works. The ideal candidate will have an understanding of film and its transformation as it has moved into different platforms (including video and digital media). The program is especially interested in candidates whose research and teaching focus on representations of race and ethnicity in contemporary moving image culture, and/or the industries that construct and inform those representations. Our new faculty member’s research and scholarship would ideally foster productive connections with Connecticut College’s Center for the Comparative Study of Race and Ethnicity (http://www.conncoll.edu/academic-centers/ccsre/).

Film Studies is a vibrant program with approximately 45 majors and minors, housed in the Department of Theater (http://www.conncoll.edu/academics/majors-departments-programs/academic-programs/film-studies/). We are seeking an enthusiastic and dynamic candidate who is engaged in interdisciplinary work and is eager to support and diversify our undergraduate offerings in ways specifically suited to a liberal arts environment. The candidate’s eagerness to advise and mentor students from a variety of disciplines and levels is crucial to our continuing commitment to a critically engaged and media literate student body. Part of that commitment entails the candidate’s aptitude in creating events, discussions, and academically challenging experiences outside of the classroom, not only for Film Studies students, but also for the larger Connecticut College academic community. Putting together screenings and panel discussions, and bringing in guest scholars and dynamic visiting lecturers are all part of this vision. We seek a candidate who can help us fulfill our college’s mission: “Connecticut College educates students to put the liberal arts into action as citizens in a global society” (http://www.conncoll.edu/at-a-glance/mission/).

Because of the small size of our classes, and the intimacy of our Film Studies courses, candidates should demonstrate dedication to innovative and interactive teaching. An interest in pursuing diversity and diverse perspectives should be reflected in the candidate’s approach to teaching and in their course materials. Tenure-track faculty members teach a 3-2 load (2-2 in the first year). In addition to providing ongoing strong support for teaching and research, the College offers the following resources for pre-tenured faculty: a summer stipend for the first two years, a supplementary research fund, and a semester’s sabbatical after a successful third-year review. Salary is competitive.

Connecticut College is a private, highly selective institution with a demonstrated commitment to outstanding faculty teaching and research. Recognizing that intellectual vitality and diversity are inseparable, the College has embarked on a significantly successful initiative to diversify its faculty, student body, and curriculum. Connecticut College seeks scholars excited about working in a liberal arts setting, with its strong focus on engaged teaching, participation in shared governance, and active involvement in an institution-wide advancement of diversity. AA/EEO.

We will begin reviewing applications, with full consideration, on November 1, 2013, and will continue to do so until the position is filled. Candidates should upload a letter of application, curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy, teaching evaluations, three letters of recommendation (one of which must explicitly address the candidate’s teaching), one or two sample syllabi, and samples of written scholarship to filmsearch@conncoll.edu, c/o Dr. Nina K. Martin, Director, Film Studies Program, Box 5517, Connecticut College, 270 Mohegan Drive, New London, CT 06320. Any questions about the application process or a candidate’s status should be referred to Donna Holman at dthol@conncoll.edu, and at 860-439-2605.

NOTES:

- Does anyone know why this program refers to one of its faculty as Mrs.?  Is this a telltale sign?

  • - Telltale sign of what? Where did you see this? Some faculty have MFA and do not hold PhD (hence no Dr.  reference). Are you saying you prefer they use Professor? Not sure what it matters? (10/19)

- Am I the only one to not hear from them at all? (11/26)

  • - Nope, haven't heard a peep either. (11/27) x2

-Was the 12/20 rejection email after a phone interview?  Otherwise, has anyone who had an interview heard anything? (12/23)

  • - No, I haven't heard anything since the phone interview either. (12/23) x4

-Whoever wrote above that Campus Visits were being scheduled - do you know that for sure? It seems like those of us who had phone interviews still haven't heard anything back, but that we were all TOLD at the conclusion of our interviews that the school would let us know if we were going to advance to the campus visit stage. I personally have not heard anything, despite a gently worded inquiry to the chair of the hiring committee a couple of weeks ago. So my question is: HAS anyone actually been contacted and invited to the campus?

Hi all, yes I was contacted before the winter holidays to set up a time for a campus interview, happening in early Feb. [1.20]; OK, thanks for the update.

NOTES:

Any updates? Since this job is in an English dept, there should be MLA interviews..

  • (The email requesting additonal materials indicated that they will do skype interviews. Also the deadline to send in materials is 12/26 - so I would expect any communication only after 26th Dec)
  • I wouldn't expect any news until after the New Year, and maybe not until the week of the 6th.
  • Poster above: do you have an inside track telling you that, or is this just your best guess? Thanks.
  • Still no word? - I haven't heard anything either since the additional materials request. As the poster above said, the deadline for additional materials was 12/26, so it might still be too early to hear back.
  • 1/31: Has anyone who did a Skype interview heard anything yet? Last Skype interviews were yesterday. (x4)
  • 2/1: No, I haven't heard back yet since the Skype interview. I'm hoping they'll start contacting people to schedule campus visits next week. (x 2)
  • 2/10 Has anyone who did a Skype interview heard anything yet? Does this seem like a long time?
  • 2/10 No, and yes it feels like an eternity. But it's only been a week and change, and I gather that's not really a long time. Anyone get info on their timeline during Skype interview? I did not. --> ETA: spoke too soon. Received perfunctory rejection email just now.
  • 2/10.  Has anyone gotten a campus visit? I had a skype interview and still have not heard word either way.
  • 2/10. No, I haven't heard anything since the Skype interview either.
  • Campus visit scheduled. [posted 2/10]
  • I had a Skype interview but still have not heard anything. (2/13)
  • ^Same here. It seems like the wiki admin was the only one who posted about the campus visit. Either they're keeping a longer list of alternates, or scheduling these visits 1 at a time? (2/13)
  • Still nothing! (2/18)

  • Has anyone heard *anything* about the process here? I've not gotten anything other than the automated acknowledgement upon application and am trying to figure out where they are without bugging them. (11/8)
  • Anyone have info about campus visits? (1/17)
  • Has anyone heard anything? (1/27)
  • I was given to understand we would hear back by the end of Januray, one way or the other. Has anyone in fact heard back from the department? Does anyone here have any sense for what might be going on? (2/3)
  • Finally couldn't resist any longer, and e-mailed the department to find out what's what. Hadn't heard from them since my MLA interview. The chair sent me an appallingly callous "oops, I thought HR contacted you already... we hired someone." Great job, guys. (But really, congrats to whomever got the position!) (3/21)
  • re the above, I would have left it with your "great job, guys" comment, because, really, being out of touch like that after a face-to-face interview is truly appalling. But I guess appalling has become typical.
  • It's ridiculous, right? Glad to hear someone else is as taken aback as I was / am / will bef forever.

NOTES:

  • NOTE: this appears to be a repetition of a search that did not succeed last year. See Film Studies 2013
  • Last year, St. Olaf made an offer to someone who turned them down for a different position.  After that--at least as far as I could tell--they declared the search a failure.  I don't know whether they actually reached out to their other finalists or not, or if they just gave up (despite the number of people they had interviewed at MLA, among whom must have been many other viable candidates).   If you are interviewing with them, be aware that they seem to be looking for something very specific--although I kind of got the impression last year that they might be divided as to what their priorities in a hire should be.  You may want to check the comments of people who posted on the St. Olaf thread from last year's Wiki, linked above.
  • They did reach out to several finalists last year, and I did not get the impression that they were looking for something unusually specific.
  • Ok, good, thanks for that extra info.  Not being a finalist, I didn't know.  Why was the search a failure, then?  Did all the finalists from last year turn them down for other places?  It would be great if you could tell us, because I've been wondering for some time what happened.  As for the part about looking for something specific, you could be right, since you seem to know more about the finalist stage.  From my point of view at the semi-finalist stage, though, it seemed to me that they didn't quite know what they wanted but would have, immediately, had it been presented to them.  Well, it's all subjective from any given applicant's point of view, I guess.  I'm not trying to be disagreeable--I'm just trying to tell you the impressions I got from the limited exposure I had to the process.  Thanks for sharing what you know.
  • I interviewed for the St. Olaf position last year, too! Can we have a reunion at MLA this year? :) I didn't make it to the final stage, but I was admittedly quite green. I got the impression there might have been some varying interests between the English and the communication committee members, and I was surprised an HR rep came too (luckily, I brought extra materials!), but overall, I found them very cordial, warm, and engaged. I didn't apply again this year -- you only get to break my heart once -- but best wishes to the applicants! Seems like a great place to work.

  • --- This job was listed last year, and apparently an offer was made in March.  Does anyone know what happened?  Is there something going on behind the scenes?
  • I was one of the candidates offered the job last year. It seemed like a great job at/in a great place with great people, but the faculty is non-tenured and the salary offer was rather low for the East Coast.
  • For the person who posted above: could you say more about the salary? How low is "low"? And is this particular position non-tenured as well? Info would be great for those of us who are considering this position. Thanks!

NOTES:

They just pulled my letters of rec. Does anyone have a sense if this amounts to making it to the next level, or are all letters being solicited? (11/14)

My letters were requested a few days after I submitted my application on 10/11. I think they are soliciting letters from every applicant. (11/15) This is correct. I contacted one of their administrators a couple days ago about letters after noticing that mine had not made their way to their system. They looked into it and told me that they have a new system in place that requires an admin to manually push a button for each applicant's letters. This wasn't previously done and they are now pushing through all the requests. (11/15)

Thanks for your insight and sharing this info! (11/15)

I know someone who has a phone interview scheduled soon. (9/28) (Can someone confirm if this is legitimate? Bad grammar, "I know someone," and the absence of a confirmed interview date makes this seem odd).

OP here. I apologize for the "bad grammar." I'll blame the fact that I wrote the sentence when my brain was demanding sleep, but I also didn't take the care that I would have had I known my contribution was going to be critiqued in such a manner. I'm not sure what else I can say to prove that the information is valid. If you don't want to believe it's true, I suppose no one else suffers. The person who has a phone interview scheduled did not mention the date for which it is scheduled during our conversation, nor did I push him/her to do so since s/he knew I had applied for the same job and it was awkward enough without me pressing for details. (9/29)

  • OP: thanks for sharing what you know! (9/29)
  • Woah. I didn't mean to offend you, but your original post honestly looked like spam. (9/29)
  • Skype interviews were taking place today (9/30) and Friday the 27th. Anyone have a sense of why some had phone interviews and others Skype?
  • IMPORTANT:  Whoever pointed out the phantom "bad grammar" failed to make his/her subjects and verb agree in his/her response. (10/7)

  • On-campus interviews scheduled for October (10/11).
    • Where are you getting this information? I heard from a trusted source that campus visitis have not been scheduled yet. (10/15).

11/20 - Just curious after the insider hire discussion. Was it the inside hire that got the offer?

11/21 - Inside hire didn't get the offer.

NOTES:

I can't tell, but this job seems to have an inside higher. They currently have a VAP, (she got her BA from Whitman), that teaches the courses they call for. Anyone have any knowledge of this?

It's the posting of the job for less than a month that gives away the inside hire plan (and the *nickname* they use on the VAP's webpage?). Sure, send in the materials. But... a Sept 6 close date? that makes no sense unless they're interested in limiting the number of apps they get. Either that or they don't know what they're doing, which could be the case, I suppose.  (9/6)

No knowledge of this but thanks for putting the word out on a possible insider hire. Kinda sucks as I just spent all day compiling application materials.

Since there are so many intervening factors in a job search, I'm generally reluctant to speculate about inside candidates, but in this case, the VAP is very strongly positioned to transition into a tenure line.

I AM a VAP someplace (not at Whitman) and let me tell you that places LOVE to pass over the VAPS for a juicier hire. Unless the VAP is sleeping with the chair or married to a tenure-track person already on the faculty, I really don't think that gives them much of an advantage if your qualifications are better or equal. (Believe me, I wish it did.) In fact, I often wonder if it isn't the VAPs themselves posting these "observations" in order to scare off competition.  Don't be afraid to apply!

Jesus Christ this process is such utter bullshit. (10/6 through the end of time)

  • (I love you. My thoughts exactly. But I am still, for what seems like year after year, subjecting myself to this bullshit process. Grrr.) (11/12)
  • Grrrl you gonna be just fine. Luv u 2. (1/30)

Care to elaborate on what led you to this assertion? (10/7)

Yes. (10/7) Would you share your thoughts? :) (10/8) My thoughts are still under peer review. (12/1) It's the damnedest thing, but I'm still waiting on that review. (1/30) Okay, the peer review finally showed up in my inbox. They're telling me my original argument ("Jesus Christ this process is such utter bullshit") is self-evident and doesn't merit elaboration. However, they would be interested in seeing my take on the possibility that this process might actually more closely resemble horseshit. (3/25)

This reads like a renewal contract for the Lecturer they already have and is based on her exact teaching and service areas.

Is anyone thinking of applying to this position and the TT job at U. of Washington? I'm wondering if applying to both screams desperation and, if does, if that is a bad thing to scream?

(OP) I think you probably answered your own question. Of course, there might be different SCs for each position . . .

DISCUSSION[]

1/14/14: Is it me or are there fewer job postings this year? Or are there fewer candidates on the job market?

I've been on the Film Studies job market for several different cycles but it seems like this year either:

1. schools are taking a very long time to move onto first round interviews (either via phone/Skype or at MLA, NCA etc)

2. schools have moved forward bur no one is posting about it

There are jobs that had September due dates that have had no updates. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this.

  • I have assumed there's low participation this year from applicants. No one (myself included) has been reporting acknowledgments of apps received. So we're all sort of in the dark.
  • Not sure about NCA, but for jobs with MLA interviews, I wouldn't expect much movement until mid-December, esp. since that conference is later in January than ever this year. As for everything else, the best way to get the reporting going is to add some info. yourself when you have it (even second-hand info. and things like acknowledgements are welcome). It's also still the case that many deadlines have yet to pass or just did pass rather recently [11/11]

[3/5/14]: I got an interview invitation for SCMS, and I was not planning on going to SCMS prior to this. Obviously, now my plans have changed.  If I am only attending SCMS for the interview, would I still need to register and pay the (ridiculously high) late registration fees? Any input would be appreciated as I am not familiar with conference protocol in such cases.

Don't pay the registration fee! When I interviewed at MLA as a non-MLAer I didn't pay registration. You really only need to register if you're presenting.

Congratulatoins for the interview. Don't pay. Job Interview is really not an official part of SCMS conference.

  • - Thanks for your input, that makes sense. I'm on a tight budget as it is :)

3/26: Has anything heard about the position at the University of New Mexico for someone doing Latino/a and Latin American film? Campus visits currently underway. (4/3)

7/30: This round of applications seems to be officially over. I'm wondering how many of you are disappointed? I sure am.
