The Department of English at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Film Studies at the rank of assistant professor to start July 31, 2016, pending final administrative and budgetary approval. We seek a faculty member committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and academic service. The successful candidate will maintain an active research program and teach a 3/3 load including sophomore Introduction to Film classes and upper-division courses in film history and theory.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Film Studies, English, Comparative Literature, or closely related field, and evidence of successful teaching are required. Evidence of scholarly activity or publication is required. We especially welcome candidates with auxiliary interests in one or more of the following areas: television studies, new media, game studies, and history of film technologies.

• Agreed with the previous comment. My guess is App State wants to get candidates in to beat those interviewing at MLA to getting out an offer. I've seen this before, esp. with my colleagues in rhet/comp, where the competition is particularly stiff. Then again, I've also a university go back to the contestant pool after three campus visits, so anything can happen still. Good luck, all.

We are looking to fill three positions in the English department: Film Studies, American Literature, and Postcolonial Literatures. All positions are rank open, and we will consider applications for both tenured and tenure-track posts.

For the position in Film Studies, we are looking for a scholar to cover World Cinema with a specialisation in one or more of the following fields: film theory, postcolonial film, contemporary cinema. Interest and expertise in digital media is a plus. Classes to be offered will depend on the successful candidate’s expertise, but will need to include Film Theory as well as more specialised classes on national/regional/auteur cinema.

The successful candidate in American Literature will ideally be able to cover the historical sweep of North American literature while focusing on one or more of the following areas: slave narratives, trans-Atlantic literature, literature of the Pacific Rim, African-, Asian-, and Latin-American literatures. Interest and expertise in popular culture would be a plus, but is not required. Classes to be offered will depend on the successful candidate’s expertise, but will need to include a survey course on North American Literature, as well as more specialised courses on theoretical and historical trends in American literature.

The successful candidate in Postcolonial Literatures would ideally be comfortable with a broad sweep of literatures from around the world in addition to focusing on one or more of the following areas: Translation Studies, Subcontinental literatures, African literatures, Francophone literatures. Interest and expertise in Indian vernacular literatures and popular culture is a plus. Classes to be offered will depend on the successful candidate’s expertise, but will need to include a course on Postcolonial Theories and Texts, as well as classes on Literatures in Translation.

In addition to developing curriculum and teaching the two-course interactive media production sequence, the ideal candidate will be prepared to teach a range of courses in film and video production as well as history, theory and/or media studies. Specific areas of expertise may include video games, animation, video for the web, special effects, social media and new media scholarship in addition to the more traditional arenas of film and video. The normal teaching load is five courses per academic year.

Cornell University’s Department of Performing and Media Arts seeks an assistant professor, with expertise either in the area of media/film production or in the area of dance/choreography, for a tenure-track position beginning July 1, 2016. Defiance College (OH) - Assistant Professor of Communication

Defiance College invites applications for an anticipated opening for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor of Communication Studies. Responsibilities include a 24-credit per year teaching load in a variety of courses in the Communication Studies major, academic advising and curriculum development, scholarship leading to conference presentations and publication, and service to the college.

The Triangle area boasts a rich film culture at the university, museum, as well as theatrical level. Film faculty regularly mentor student fellows for the Full Frame Documentary Festival that takes place every spring and are involved in the film culture of the Triangle. Additionally, there is a growing Digital Humanities initiative at NCSU (part of a Triangle university consortium that includes Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill and is tied to the National Humanities Center) and opportunities for partnerships with other universities in the Triangle around film and media studies programs and events.

The Program in Film and Media Studies at Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for a lecturer position in film studies for academic year 2016-2017. This is a one-year, full-time appointment. Teaching responsibilities include three courses each semester (Fall/Spring), with a mixture of lower and upper level undergraduate courses, including History of World cinema and Film Historiography. We are seeking an excellent classroom teacher who has a broad and thorough knowledge of film history and is adept at film analysis. Research specialty is open, but we especially welcome applications from scholars who have an interest in any of the following: Asian film, transnational approaches, African-American representation, LGBT or feminist issues in film, contemporary film. Student advising and possible participation in committee work expected.
