Cinema and Media Studies (CMS) Teaching Assistant Professor, English[1]--University of Nevada, Reno[]

 

Job Description

The Department of English at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), invites applicants for a regular Teaching Assistant Professor position to begin July 1, 2020. We are seeking a specialist in Cinema and Media Studies (CMS) with a demonstrated record of teaching excellence in the field and an ability to teach English 202: Film Analysis and Interpretation, as well as other courses contributing to the department’s Minor in Cinema and Media Studies. We welcome applicants with expertise in a related area such as World Cinema, Indigenous Cinema, Queer Cinema, or Television Studies. Applicants are also expected to be able to teach literature of the U.S. and/or Core Humanities. The position carries a 4/4 teaching load with potential course release opportunities for academic advisement, assessment, curriculum development, and other administrative duties.

 

Required Qualifications

PhD in English or Film Studies (or a closely related field such as Digital Media Studies) by August 2020.

Demonstrated excellence in teaching in cinema and/or media studies.

Preferred Qualifications

Evidence of excellence in teaching literature of the U.S. and/or Core Humanities.

Evidence of attention to diversity, equity and inclusion in teaching and/or service.

Boston College (USA:Mass.) - TT Assistant Professor of Screen Studies[]

The Department of Communication at Boston College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in Screen Studies.  The successful candidate should demonstrate an active research agenda dealing with screen studies in the context of contemporary convergence culture, with topical focus on screen history, theory, and criticism. 

The successful candidate will be required to teach Film Theory and Criticism, as well as courses such as Introduction to Digital Media Studies, Global Screen Cultures and additional classes in the candidate's area of specialty.  The Communication Department at Boston College is committed to excellence in research, scholarship, and teaching.  In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to engage in service to the department, college, and the discipline. The teaching load for the position is 3/2, or 5 courses per year. 

Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Communication or Film Studies in hand by May, 2020.  Candidates should have an established record of scholarship in Screen Studies with emphasis on the areas specified.

Minimum Qualifications:

1) A Ph.D. in Film or Television Studies or other closely-related disciplines from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required; however, applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered. For appointment, the doctorate must be completed by the date of appointment (8/20/2020).
2) Evidence of successful teaching in television and film history, theory, and critical analysis; cultural studies; and/or emerging media at the undergraduate level.
3) Evidence of scholarly activity in the field of Television and Film Studies

Preferred Qualifications:

1) Demonstrated ability to teach large lecture classes in media history, theory and criticism as well as smaller, upper division classes.

Duties:

The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community.  These responsibilities generally include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.

The successful candidate will teach courses in television, film, and media studies. The normal teaching load is 12 units per semester, reduced to 9 during the first two years of appointment.

About the Position:

The School for Studies in Art and Culture invites applications from qualified candidates for a preliminary appointment in Asian Film and Media Cultures, at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning 1 July 2020.

The candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses at all year levels, covering Asian film and media cultures as well as other aspects of the Film Studies curriculum. The candidate will also be expected to teach MA-level seminars, and to supervise MA student research. Although Carleton Film Studies does not include a PhD program, students have the option of applying to do doctoral work on film-related subjects under the supervision of Film Studies faculty members, through Carleton’s Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Culture.

About the Academic Unit:

The Film Studies program is located within Carleton University’s interdisciplinary School for Studies in Art and Culture, which also houses undergraduate and graduate programs in Art History, and Music. The Film Studies program itself is one of the oldest and most respected of its type in Canada. The candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses at all year levels, covering Canadian and/or Indigenous cinema, as well as other aspects of the Film Studies curriculum. The candidate will also be expected to teach MA-level seminars, and to supervise MA student research. Although Carleton Film Studies does not include a PhD program, students have the option of applying to do doctoral work on film-related subjects under the supervision of Film Studies faculty members, through Carleton’s Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art and Culture.

The Film Studies program is located within Carleton University’s interdisciplinary School for Studies in Art and Culture, which also houses undergraduate and graduate programs in Art History, and Music. The Film Studies program itself is one of the oldest and most respected of its type in Canada. The School of Communication and Journalism at Eastern Illinois University seeks an individual to teach courses in our growing Television & Video Production B.A. with a specific focus on narrative and creative television and video production courses. The candidate should be able to mentor student television and video projects in a hands-on environment through the entire production process, from development through distribution. Normal teaching load is 24 semester hours per academic year with each production course consisting of four hours.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in Communication, Television, Film, Digital Media, or related field is required for appointment. The Television & Video Production Bachelor of Arts at Eastern Illinois University provides an innovative and comprehensive hands-on experience in producing television, film, and video. From cinematic productions to live broadcasts, students engage with every production element in a wide variety of television, film, and video genres and formats. Through classes and practical experiences students learn to develop, shoot, edit, promote, and perform in various audiovisual media formats taught by experienced and invested faculty. Students begin with basic short-form narrative in Production I and conclude with a full-length television pilot in Production IV (which air through campus cable). The Television & Video Production major promotes practical experiences for students with its close working relationships with WEIU-TV/FM for live broadcasts and off-line productions, Athletics broadcasts on ESPN+, the sketch comedy program “Alt TV,” and commercial video production for various departments and Web Services. The Department of English at Michigan State University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Film Studies and the Digital Humanities with an expected start date of August 16, 2020. A Ph.D. in film and media studies, or its equivalent, is required, and the successful candidate will have an emerging record of scholarly achievement. Salary is competitive, commensurate with rank and experience.

The successful candidate’s primary teaching responsibilities will be in Film Studies. Applicants must be prepared to teach a broad range of core undergraduate courses on film history, film and media theory, as well as a graduate film studies methodologies course, and to develop new courses within areas of their expertise. The candidate is also expected to contribute to the literary studies and Digital Humanities curricula through courses on digital media and methodologies, as well as advise graduate students. The successful candidate will be appointed on an academic year basis and will engage in an active program of research, service, and teaching, normally two courses per semester. The teaching assignment may include courses in the College of Arts & Letters Interdisciplinary Arts & Humanities general education program and, potentially, in the College’s other interdisciplinary programs, such as women’s and gender studies.

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be instrumental in helping to develop interdisciplinary research and teaching initiatives focused on fields such as digital cinema and cultures, new media theory, media archaeology, archival theory and practice, and/or computational methodologies, particularly as these areas intersect critically with issues of diversity. Candidates should have primary expertise in film studies and the digital humanities, along with secondary expertise in areas such as gender and sexuality and/or race and ethnicity. We especially welcome candidates with expertise in feminist media history and theory. The research area is open to a variety of national, transnational, and postcolonial film and media cultures.

The Media Arts Department at the University of North Texas invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in the area of cinematography, with a dedicated emphasis on the documentary form. The department considers film to be an art form; and non-fiction film, in particular, is studied from various perspectives, including environmental, social justice, youth media, community media, anthropological cinema, verité, episodic and character-driven documentary. 

The successful candidate will be expected to help advance the Department of Media Arts’ Master of Fine Arts program in Documentary Production and Studies as a premier, internationally recognized graduate program. We are particularly interested in applicants with a track record of success in the documentary field, or a clear creative and research agenda that indicates high likelihood of future success at the national and international levels.  

The ideal candidate will combine technical and artistic experience in documentary cinematography with a strong understanding of the history and theory of this genre, and the ability to teach documentary history/theory courses as appropriate. We also seek applicants with expertise in emerging production and distribution platforms for documentary, including mobile and social media, immersive and emergent technologies and platforms.

The Department of Media Study at The State University of New York at Buffalo is inviting applications for a Clinical Assistant Professor position. We seek a scholar in the humanities or arts with a film concentration for this full-time non-tenure-track faculty position. The successful candidate will have experience teaching film theory and film history and will be able to teach advanced seminars to majors as well as large classes to diverse students from across the university. In addition, the candidate should have experience teaching and developing online film courses. The successful candidate will work closely with colleagues to develop the Interdisciplinary BA in Film Studies and Interdisciplinary MA in Humanities with a concentration in Film and Media Study. In addition, the selected candidate will teach six courses over the academic year while maintaining an active program of scholarship and/or artistic production in his or her area of expertise.
