Welcome / Formatting Guidelines []

Welcome to the French and Francophone Studies 2013-2014 Wiki!

Adding new entries to the wiki:

  • New entries should be placed in alphabetical order. Note that "University of X" should be alphabetized by U as first sort, and X as second sort within the U listings.
  • New entries should follow this format: === [web link whenever possible Name of University, Position, Field] ===
  • In the body of the entry, the following categories (without bullet points):
    • Deadline: in bold (using three ' before and after the date)
    • Request for more materials:
    • Rejection:
    • Preliminary interview (please specify: Skype, MLA, phone):
    • Rejection post-MLA:
    • Campus visit:
    • Offer made:
    • NOTES & QUERIES:
  • For logging comments or updates, please begin your entry with a bullet point (use an asterisk to create a bullet point). Each entry should have a separate line.
  • For substantive comments or updates about status, interaction, etc., please include the date at the beginning of your entry so that users can scan the info quickly for new entries.

Policy Discussion for Next Year[]

  • I'm posting this message following edits by someone who feels strongly about posting links to job talks. Posting such info has been done in the past, on the French wiki and on others, with a rule of thumb that if calendars / online announcements are available online, it is acceptable to post them here. On the other hand, info that is obtained through inside intel (for example through a mailing list solely intended for departmental use, or through a friend at a recruiting institution) cannot be posted here. Other wikis absolutely forbid the posting of links to calendars / online announcements. Since there are no wiki guidelines regarding this matter, what to do should be discussed between users of a given page. If people feel strongly about the posting of links to calendars / online announcements of job talks, please voice your opinion so we can settle the matter before opening the page for next year.
  • To clarify: when you say "info regarding campus talks," you mean names of candidates and/or links to job talk announcements? On any page of the wiki, it is considered appropriate to provide dates when campus visits were scheduled and/or held, without other information identifying candidates. The specific question that arises on some pages (and here) is whether it is also appropriate to provide links to job talk listings (if they are available). Almost universally, it is considered inappropriate to name campus visit candidates if there is no such public link announcing them. The issue of including links to calendars / online announcements where candidates are named *is* an issue that is handled differently according to different fields and the job seekers in this field should express their views one way or another. --Una74 (talk) 13:57, June 10, 2014 (UTC)
  • I personally don't think that posting names is a good idea, whether or not they are posted by departments. There is a lot of discussion of "inside" candidates and other speculation on the Wiki. Speculation is totally fine in an anonymous format. Sometimes is off base, however, and it's not fair to candidates, or even to people on committees who are being accused of things that may or may not be true.

Deadline:

Request for more materials:

Rejection:

Preliminary interview (please specify: Skype, MLA, phone): phone (2/4)

Rejection post-MLA:

Campus visit:

Offer made:

NOTES & QUERIES:

  • Please, nobody apply for this job. This post requires a laundry list of teaching duties, including supervising theses, First Year Seminar work, advising, "facilitating the growth of the program," and departmental and university service. However, being NON TENURE TRACK, you will be expected to do this all for less money, no job security whatsoever, and probably less research/moving funds. We all need to band together and say no to these exploitative positions to send a message to college administrators.
  • It sounds to me like a teaching-only position with no research expectations at all (research is not mentioned). Teaching three courses per semester with some service but no research obligations doesn't sound so outrageous for someone who just wants to teach--better than adjuncting, that's for sure, and probably better than a lot of full-time lecturer jobs. I agree that the large gap in pay and job security between comparable research- and teaching-focused jobs is unfair, but without knowing what kind of salary or benefits are offered, or the department's track record for keeping or promoting people hired into this type of position, I'd wait for more information before calling this position exploitative or talking someone primarily interested in teaching out of applying for it.
  • I agree with the first poster, but unfortunately this will likely be the new trend, as these jobs have been on the uptick the past five years or so. Not applying is not going to reverse this trend, even if I wish it would. As to the second poster, you never know if the pay would be better than lecturer. There are some dismal salaries out there, especially at smaller public schools--that would be the battle to fight if we all chose not to apply to certain places. Good luck!
  • Fewer applicants won't send that message, especially if they still end up getting a competent teacher out of it. Applying, getting the offer, and if you're unable to negotiate a fair salary, saying, "No, I'm sorry, I won't fill all those responsibilities for that salary" or "I got a higher salary offer from Other U and will be taking it" might send the message. Take a look at this school's department page and especially the "faculty accomplishments." This is not a department that does research. If you want research to be part of your job, this is not your place, nor would it have been 5 or 10 years ago. It may never have offered tenure (that I don't know). It's hardly a new trend to award tenure and research-related perks only to research faculty. Not that changing that is not a worthy goal.

Carnegie Mellon University-- TT(?) Asst. Professor of French[]

Deadline: None Listed

Request for more materials:

Rejection:

Preliminary interview (please specify: Skype, MLA, phone):

Rejection post-MLA:

Campus visit:

Offer made:

NOTES & QUERIES:

  • So, if you click the job ad, you will be directed to monster.com, which is thus far the only place this job ad has been listed except for a short period of time when it was listed under "other employment" at cmu.edu. You will also see that the job ad has almost no details, no deadline, no contact info, and asks for almost nothing. A week ago, I contacted their HR department which confirmed this was a real job but almost immediately removed it from cmu.edu and did not respond to a follow-up query. They did not answer my explicit question of whether or not the position is tenure-track. The short of it is that despite only circumstantial evidence, I am near certain this is a spousal hire. I don't have a problem with this per se, but I'm perturbed at the possibility that I might be duped into investing my own time-- in fact, already have invested this much--for a position that's not really available. I guess they're making it as clear as they can, but why even have an HR department when its rules can be circumvented when necessary? Just don't fake an open search when it's not.
  • - I completely agree with you. Somebody told me about this position, but it just looked too fishy. No contact? No deadline? It's a fake :-(

College of Charleston (SC) - TT Asst. Professor of French (3 Positions) - POSITIONS FILLED[]

Deadline: 15 Nov. 2013

Request for more materials:

Rejection:

Preliminary interview (please specify: Skype, MLA, phone): Skype 2/19 <---For which century? (since they had three searches) Thanks

Rejection post-MLA: Rejection e-mail received 4/14 (3 tenure-track positions were filled)

Campus visit:

Offer made:

NOTES & QUERIES:

  • There are THREE positions for this section of the department. Seems like a large number. Anyone know what is going on over there?
  • They lost two people last year -- one to Pitt and one to the Citadel.
  • Here's their 2012-2013 departmental annual report: http://french.cofc.edu/documents/AR%202012-13.pdf
  • Any news about these positions? (12/16) (1/8) (1/16)
  • They actually lost three people. In addition to the aforementioned 2 people, a female faculty member was denied tenure last lear. They need to repopulated the departement.
  • No news...bad news? They have two VAPs, so this might be the answer :-(
  • Any news at all? (2/2) (2/10)

College of Staten Island, CUNY - TT Assistant or Associate Professor of French - POSITION FILLED[]

Deadline: December 1, 2013

Request for more materials: generic email requesting letters of reference, 12/10 (x4)

Rejection:

Preliminary interview (please specify: Skype, MLA, phone): Skype interview scheduled (2/5) (x2)

Rejection post-MLA:

Campus visit: Campus visit invitation 2/19

Offer made: 3/18

NOTES & QUERIES:

  • Did they request letters of reference to all candidates or have they short listed some? Has anyone not received a generic email from them? A: from the email, I'd say they requested letters from everyone. Candidates selected for an interview will be notified by the end of January.
  • I think what the question poster wanted to know is if the emails were sent out at the conclusion of a prescreening, if he/she passed a first screening stage. I agree that they probably sent the emails to everyone.
  • I didn't hear anything from this school at all.
  • Any news about this position? (01/29)
  • I haven't heard anything back since I had my rec letters sent to them. (1/29)
  • Still nothing? They said they'd contact people by the end of January (1/31)

Rejection post-MLA:

Campus visit: scheduled 1/16

Offer made: offer made (posted 02/23)

NOTES & QUERIES:

  • Just a note that this is not just in the 19th, but carries a "strong" interdisciplinary perspective with it as well.
  • No more MLA interviews? Anyone? I wonder if they're sending interview requests as they go through the applications, or if they're done and sending rejection letters soon. (11/22)
  • To the rock star with an interview: could you please tell us whether contact was made via phone, email, or Interfolio? Thanks! (11/22)
    • Not that rock star but I know they went out via email.
  • Once interview notices go out, you can assume they are done. The other 10 or so people are prob just not using the wiki.
  • True, but sometimes there are 2 waves of interview postings on the wiki. Last year it happened a couple of times. In any case, the interviews are set up one week and then someone posts that they got an interview email a week later Don't lose hope yet.
  • Yeah, many people I know don't even look at the wiki.  Or look, but don't post.
  • Any news? No rejection letters yet? It's been a while since they scheduled interviews.
  • Sometimes rejections come after the MLA.  Sometimes they don't come at all.  Unfortunate, but true.
  • Out of curiosity, to the person who posted a rejection post-MLA, what day did they conduct MLA interviews for this position?
  • This update was actually posted 12/24; I'm removing it from "Rejection post-MLA" so as to avoid any confusion.
  • Did anyone who interviewed at the MLA but didn't get a campus visit ever receive a rejection letter or email from the search committee?  I didn't even receive a response to my post-MLA thank you email. Just curious if this was the case for others too. (4/23)

Campus visit: Held on  1/22-24 / Received a rejection email after campus visit on 2/3 saying they have offered the position  another candidate who has accepted it [posted 2/3]

  • they are down to a "short list" of candidates and will determine in a couple of weeks the 3 candidates they will choose for on-campus interviews. [posted 1/15]
  • Any news [1/30]?
  • No news on my end... Anyone? [1/31]

Offer made: [see above]

NOTES & QUERIES:

  • How did you get the info regarding "short list of candidates" and "on-campus visits"? Did they contact you? -> yes, I received an email...
  • I wonder, then, if all "short-list" candidates have been contacted. Did you send an email to which they replied or did they spontaneously contact you? --> they contacted all short list candidates.
  • Anyone in my case? I of 2 email from Elizabethtown college. The first one states that I was among the candidates to be interviewed on  campus. Soon after, another email came saying the first one was a glitch and they still wrking on the candidates to invite. --> yes, got the same, it was not a glitch, the chair's first email was just a little confusing. Being on a "short list" simply means they have done a first process of narrowing down the number of candidates to be considered for campus interviews. Out of this "short list", 3 candidates will be picked to be brought on campus.
  • What is the point of contacting people to tell them they've made a "short list"? Why not just contact the final 3?

Deadline: Nov. 15, 2013.

NOTES & QUERIES:

  • Under the preferred qualifications for this position, they note: "18 graduate hours of Spanish with ability to teach Spanish at lower level." So I guess they are looking for someone to teach French and Spanish?

  • I was informed that it would be great if you could teach Spanish, but that it was a French position. I was informed by email because I thought it was a typo as well. (12/06)
  • Email 12/09:  "Because of budgetary reasons we are cancelling this search. We expect to advertise a combined French/German position soon, and encourage you to consider that opportunity."
  • ^^^^ Please tell me that is a joke?

  • What's up with this position? I don't see it on the Human Resources URL where you are supposed to apply ... Also, noticed it says "pending budgetary approval." Does this mean they aren't funding the position? Anyone? Anyone?
  • Here's the answer that I got today after emailing them: "This position has not been posted yet however should be up soon please continue to check our website at https://jobs.regis.edu ."
  • Was told that the person in HR in charge of uploading the position was "on vacation" last week. The position now appears.
  • The on-line website asks applicants to download letters of recommendation. My recommenders submitted confidential letters to Interfolio. Has anyone been able to resolve this issue?
  • From HR: "You can send your Recommendation Letters to ocastro@regis.edu.  Please upload Word documents in place of the Recommendation Letters on the online application so you can finish your app. If you have any questions please let me know." (I had mine sent via Interfolio).

  • so no one's heard any whisperings about this one?

  • I have checked the history around 12/15 and didn't see any activity for Stanford. Please note that nothing is actually ever deleted from the wiki, as everything is kept in the history.

  • Or: Ms. Jacqulyn Curry, TCU Employment Manager, j.curry@tcu.edu
  • 12/22 I was also asked for letters of rec on 12/16, but then MLA interviews went out the same day. Any ideas about what is going on in this process?
  • QUESTION: any news regarding campus interview for this position?
  • When I asked them what their timeline was, they said "We hope to arrive at our next step in early to mid-February." So we might have a little more of a wait ahead of us.

NOTES & QUERIES:

  • "Specialization in French open. The ability to teach Arabic language and culture is required."
  • It seems disingenuous to not say "Assistant Professor of French and Arabic" at the outset.
  • Job titles aren't as simple as they seem--there are layers of administration and human resources behind them usually, and the title also has to be in line with whatever parameters they have set up at their insititution for fulfilling and being evaluated for ongoing employment and promotion. It's sometimes as easy as sticking a name to something, but at a lot of places not really. Working in higher education is far different from the image painted in graduate school--all of a sudden you're smacked in the face with plain old employment and all the issues that typically involves. Oh well. We carry on.

NOTES & QUERIES:

  • I'm wondering if those who received email rejections would mind letting us know if you had a Skype interview. Thank you!
  • Yes, my rejection was following a Skype interview.
  • Does anyone know how many candidates they are bringing to campus?
  • Last year I think they brought in four for the 19th c. search and I know of three who went to campus for the Francophone search, but there might have been one more. 3-4 is a good guesstimate :) Good luck :)
  • I was interviewed via Skype but have not heard from them since - I know of same for one more Skype interviewee, as well. I am assuming that the campus visitors might be more advanced scholars who might not be checking/participating in the wiki, but that's an assumption on my part... Good luck with the campus visit!
  • See http://illinois.edu/calendar/list/1940 for campus visits. (Please do not post personal information for candidates on the wiki... fortunately, these have passed).

NOTES & QUERIES:

  • Anyone was contacted for an interview? I always find it strange that they would send rejection letters before they choose an interviewing pool (although some places did that last year as well)
  • In this market, often they automatically send rejections if you do not yet have PhD in hand when you apply. There are simply too many applicants to consider ABD.
  • Automatic rejections are usually reserved for people who do not fit the ad. If it says Ph.D. in hand (this one did not) then that's a reason, but in this case rejections were probably sent to those who did not fit the period requested or didn't fit for some other clear reason (like unclear letter from advisor on whether candidate would finish). Others are on hold as possible candidates, so no rejection.
  • Re: the comment above concerning ABD. So, then, what is the purpose of anyone pursuing a Ph.D.? Should we just wait 40 years until all these folks on the market either retire or kick the bucket? That comment, while true to a certain extent, just completely shattered the hopes of candidates who are in the final stretch of their doctorate. Just because someone has the golden egg "in hand" does not necessarily mean that s/he will be a better professor. Wake up, search committees. We're the future. Without us, none of us would be here. Punto. Judge a candidate by his or her promise as a great professor. Sorry, search committees, if that eliminates a desirable column on your spreadsheet (i.e. throw her application out because she is not defending until May). Next!
  • Don't be discouraged. If you look who got jobs last year, you'll see that it's a 50/50 between ABDs and folks who graduated a few years ago and had been either in temp positions or on the tenure-track. That being said, hiring an ABD is a liability for a university. If someone isn't able to defend before the semester starts, it's unlikely they'll be able to finish while teaching even a reduced teaching load. Hiring lines may get lost, etc. Hence the reluctance some committees can have. But again, it's not universal and ABDs have a hotness factor that people with PhD in hand don't have anymore. As for the purpose of getting a PhD, we can discuss it ad vitam, but fact is, most of us won't get tenure-track jobs.
  • Actually, only 30% jobs were filled by those who did not have their PhD at time of application.  Here are the figures I’ve tallied:  (1) there were 88 jobs total, including 11 VAP, lecturer or limited term appointments; (2) of the 77 TT positions, 10 searches failed; (3) of the 67 TT lines filled, 20 were by candidates who received their PhD in 2013 or are still ABD.  Only 2 of those hires are still ABD; the remainder appear to have defended by now. [And to the person who just deleted this, I'll just keep posting it.]
  • These numbers are most helpful and should reassure ABDs and hiring committees alike. If 18/20 ABDs hired in 2013 have defended, they are perhaps not so "risky" after all. I wonder how many of the VAP or limited term appointments (like this one) were filled by ABDs vs "in-hand" candidates?
  • Thanks for the encouragement. Fingers crossed...for all of us.
  • Do we know whether the person who got a rejection was actually ABD?
  • I wa ABD last year and I got a TT offer for an institution I am in now. As long as you defend relatively quickly (i.e before early-mid August), I think it is safe to say that a lot of -if not most- institutions will hire you. You will be anyway noticed on your contract of the effect of you not defending (which can go from demotion to Instructor to your contract being terminated). So do not lose hope: you can seem more promising for a given department if you're ABD than if you have 4-5 years of VAP plus article; it REALLY depens of what they are looking for and of how they judged you on the three steps of the selection process (dossiers, interview, campus visit)
  • Did anyone else not receive a rejection and not get invited to interview?
  • Does anyone know if the offer was made for this job? (2/24)

  • Same here. I applied for the newly-listed one, anyway.

Word on the Street[]

  • General Question: Why did someone take down the Georgetown University and McGill University positions? And why are they deleting MLA interview entries? Weird stuff. (12/06) A: Someone deleted info; I restored most of it and temporarily blocked the IP address of the offender. - Thanks!
  • Happy new year, everyone!
  • I have a general question about MLA and was not sure where to post it. How many people are normally interviewed for a century specific job at MLA?
  • I would say usually 15-20, but I've heard of places interviewing more or fewer. Good luck!
  • Thanks! And by fewer, what would be the lowest number you have heard of? Good luck to you too!
  • At the college where I taught a couple of years ago, they ran a search for a Francophone specialist and interviewed about 10 candidates at MLA and invited 3 for campus visits. I think that's pretty standard (they also ran a search in Spanish with the same numbers). All the best to you in your job search.
  • First answerer again. I've heard of searches with as few as 10 and as many as 40 (!) for first-round interviews. The 40 one was via Skype, though, if I recall, and well outside the norm; I can't imagine a department trying to fit in that many at MLA. I also don't think it was century-specific. And then there are outliers that only do one round of interviews.
  • I think MLA-based interviews would rarely have more than 10-15 candidates; skype or phone-based interviews can rack up numbers (20? 30?). As for Campus visits, I have never seen or heard of any visit involving more than 3 or 4 candidates.
  • I was involved with one search that had 5 on campus candidates.

  • Is there anybody else out there who starts crying just by looking at this page, or is it just me? Hit rock bottom and now really having suicidal thoughts. Don't be alarmed, it's just a joke, but this industry is really depressing :-(
  • Not crying yet, but I do have pangs of anxiety thinking about my (slim) prospects for next year. The market has been particularly bad this year.

  • Has anyone heard anything about the College of Idaho, 2 year visiting position? (5/19)
  • For those of you who feel like branching out outside of academia in your search for a job, I can recommend looking into instructional design. I added a one-year MA in Learning Sciences to my French PhD (although that may not even be necessary if you have a lot of course design experience) and now see a whole new world of job opportunities opening up, both within and outside of academia. In my experience, universities looking for instructional designers like candidates with a PhD and teaching experience in addition to an instructional design degree, and many companies also appreciate an academic background in their instructional designers. I now have a job offer on the table from a company where both my PhD and my new MA are highly relevant, and for a salary 15 000 $ per year higher than what I was making as a lecturer. I realize this is not for everyone, but if you need a job within a field close to academia, it is definitely worth looking into.
