Bowdoin College (ME) - TT Assistant Professor hexagonal and North African literature and culture of the 19th and/or 20th/21st centuries - OFFER ACCEPTED []
Deadline: Review of applications will begin on October 31.
Request for more materials:
Rejection:
Preliminary interview (please specify: Skype, MLA, phone): phone (11/18) MLA (12/15)+1
Rejection post-MLA:
Campus visit: [see NOTES]
Offer made:
NOTES & QUERIES:
- Has more than one interview been scheduled? It's rather tricky to update the whole section with "PHONE INTERVIEWS SCHEDULED" unless it's certain several people have been contacted...
- In quite a few searches, only a handful of people post updates; we have to rely on what we have, even if it's only one person posting.
- can confirm there were multiple interviews scheduled/held
- I had a phone interview with the search committee but haven't received any rejection notification since. Is that a standard procedure?
- It never fails to amaze me the lack of professional etiquette in our profession--in general. If formal invitations to the MLA have been issued (about a week ago, it seems), then the committee (chair, member, etc.) has a basic professional obligation to send thank you notes to the candidates who took the time to have a phone interview. This is not rocket science. We are all busy, yes. But find some manners. And to the search committee: I wish you all the best with your search, and continued success with your program.
- Did anybody hear about Bowdoin? Did they contact the short listed candidates? Thanks for answering! I had a phone interview and nothing after.
- They held interviews at the MLA, but I haven't heard anything since.
- Thanks!!! Good luck for everyone!
- Did they invite the three candidate?
- It seems to many people I met in Vancouver, the department appeared disfonctional.
- I know someone who has been invited on-campus [posted 1/31]
- I presume that I am out of the game. I had an interview at the MLA. I thought I have done very well. It is crazy the Academic world. I am tired of it too.
Brandeis University (MA) - TT Asst. Professor - modern French and Francophone Studies - OFFER ACCEPTED[]

Preliminary interview (please specify: Skype, MLA, phone): MLA (12/9)
Rejection post-MLA:
Campus visit: [see NOTES]
Offer made:
NOTES & QUERIES:
- Has anyone heard anything post-MLA? (Nope. Not me, anyway.)
- I haven't heard either...has anyone else? Good luck to everyone!
- Was just going to post something as well. Are they running late or are the selected candidates just not posting?
- Campus interviews now in progress, as per rejection email (1/29) <-- Has everyone heard either way?
- I haven't heard either way. Of course, it makes sense that someone who has been offered a campus interview wouldn't be checking this wiki, but if anyone has been offered one, it would still be really helpful to knoe. To the person who received the rejection email: sorry to hear about the bad news. May I ask if this was a response to an email you sent, or did you just receive an email from them? Thanks, and good luck with the ongoing search!
- I just received an email from them. For context: I was not interviewed by them at the MLA, so I knew for a long time I was out of the running, but it was nice to get the rejection email (shows good manners :) ). Good luck to you and everyone else!
- I know somebody who has been invited for a campus visit.
- I also received a rejection ("we'll keep you posted") email, but did not have an MLA interview.

- am I the only one who painstakingly wrote a "Statement of Research and Teaching Goals" only to discover in the Interfolio link they need to be separate? Not cool, Gettysburg ad writers.

- I did the same thing! So frustrating!

NOTES & QUERIES:
- What century is the target here?
- I am as confused as you are. I assume it's about the 17th century, and the beginning of the 18th. But, in all fairness, eveything that's been written after the beginning of the 17th century in France is, in a way, post-renaissance literature. We should probably ask them?
- Never mind. There is a recent Ph.D. listed as instructor on their site, and her profile fits the job description. So, yes, 17th and 18th century.
Johns Hopkins University (MD) - TT Asst. Professor of French Lit. (Renaissance - early 17th c.) - SKYPE INTERVIEWS SCHEDULED[]

Linfield College (OR) - TT Assistant Professorship in Francophone African Studies []
Linfield College is seeking an Assistant Professor of French and Francophone Studies (Africa) beginning January 1, 2015.
Deadline: August 29, 2014
Request for more materials:
Rejection: 10/22
Preliminary interview (please specify: Skype, MLA, phone):
Rejection post-MLA:
Campus visit:
Offer made:
NOTES & QUERIES:
- What is the problem with this department? I am tempted to apply, but being aware of the fact that 3 tenured assistant professors left whithin 5 years, I am not sure I want to be there although the tenure aspect is very appealing. Any clue?
- It's a very nice and congenial department with some great teachers and some excellent researchers. I don't know about the third prof. but the two first assistant professors received very good offers from two of the top Francophone Studies programs in the nation. So that is definitely not the department's fault.
Loyola University Chicago (IL) - TT Assistant Professor, Modern/Contemporary (19th-21st c) French and Francophone Literatures and Cultures - OFFER ACCEPTED[]
Deadline: Applications received before 1 December 2014 will receive full consideration.
Request for more materials: [see NOTES]
Rejection:
Preliminary interview (please specify: Skype, MLA, phone): MLA (12/16) (x2)
Rejection post-MLA:
Campus visit: 1/16
Offer made:
NOTES & QUERIES:
- any news? have recommendations been requested? (posted 12/12)
- letters of rec requested 12/15
- Was the campus visit for French or Francophone? Thanks!
- French
- As quoted from a rejection letter dated 3/6/15: "We are pleased that you chose the faculty of Loyola University Chicago as a potential professional home. However, we must inform you that you are no longer being under active consideration for this position." Blunt. Period. Not a very tactfully constructed note, in my opinion. Some people really need a lesson in the art of writing this type of communication. A 3-year old could have written this. But congrats to the chosen one! Good luck to him/her!

Preliminary interview (please specify: Skype, MLA, phone):
Rejection post-MLA:
Campus visit:
Offer made:
NOTES & QUERIES:
- This position appears to have been "re-posted," and now has a new deadline. So for those of us who applied during fall, I suppose we are not what they are looking for. Hmmm...
- I wouldn't necessarily assume that you're out of the running for that reason. It may be that they have, say, 3-4 candidates that they really like, but want (or are required) to have to have more on their short list to proceed with interviews.
New York University (NY) - TT Asst. Professor of French - Contemporary Literature - OFFER ACCEPTED[]

Rejection post-MLA:
Campus visit: 1/14
Offer made:
NOTES & QUERIES:
- Has anyone heard anything about this yet?
- Nope; seems a bit early though, doesn't it?
- Seems like they're scheduling in a piecemeal manner.
- Has anyone been invited to the MLA since their skype interview? 12/10/14 - nope. 12/11 - rejected 12/12. Yes - MLA interview 12/12.+1
- Can't wait to see who they place in this position.........
- I really hope the committee will prove me wrong, but my guess is that the "lucky one" will be male, white, and possibly French :-(
- Yes, it will be interesting to see how this one plays out. NYU has a major case of 'ivy envy,' and lots of attitude to boot...a total joke.
- NYU student here. To the posters above, please, a little more civility about our program, thanks. "Ivy envy" and "attitude?" I know that our search committee has been doing a terrific and very fair job of notifying applicants of where they stand in this process. I can't speak to what went down in Vancouver but I know our faculty are consummate professionals. As for the idea we're all Franco-francais obsessed chauvinists, you'll be happy to hear that our campus candidates were very far from the criteria you "guessed" above. As for the process, it is winding down, and I'll leave it at that. Thanks, and good luck to all of you. We're all in this together. Talking smack about this or that Department on one part of the page and then openly decrying how awful and unprofessional search committees are on another is unbecoming of our field and of course hypocritical -- and it contributes to the problem. If you want to see better manners in academe, then lead by example. We can all use some more politesse around here. Again, my best wishes for all.
- NYU student, it's really nice of you to stand up for your Alma mater, and we all respect you for that. Helas, you will quickly learn that non, "we're not all in this together". You know your professors from your class interactions, and maybe a few informal get-togethers, we have known them in a diferent kind of setting, and the stress level might have interfered with our ability to react properly to bad news. But please, don't pretend that you are a better judge of character just because you read a few sentences jotted down out of frustration, most probably. When the search committee is exclusively male, and, with one exception, white and French (or Francophone), it's not a long shot to assume that this is the type of candidate they are looking for. We're glad to hear that we were wrong, it means there is still hope. Nevertheless, it doesn't make our profession less gloom, or less sexist, and we're sad to discover it this way. Good luck with your studies and your dissertation, and take advantage of everything your university has to offer!
- Agreed. Making a semi-anonymous public dig about a department might make you feel better, but will inevitably hurt others here reading who have connections there. And frankly, it's embarrassing. As frustrating as it is to be passed over for job after job, that's no excuse for public tantrums and unfounded speculations and accusations (mostly by one or two posters). I might not like or agree with a committee's decision, but I can respect that those volunteering to run the search are (usually) putting a lot of hours and a lot of thought into the process and are (usually) trying to do what they believe is best for the department and its students.

- I had a Skype Interview with the search commitee in December. They were very polite. I received a personalized email of rejection less than a week after that. I thought they were very professional and courteous.
- An offer has been made. That's all I know. [posted 2/18]
- I received a rejection letter in the mail today. I would like to commend the Chair for sending this letter in the *mail*; it shows class, respect, and professionalism. We, as candidates, spend a lot of time on these applications, and even though we may be disappointed that we did not get the job, it feels nice that someone actually took the time to print out an old-fashioned letter, and sign it.

- Campus visits have been scheduled a few weeks ago. [posted 2/18] --> thank you for letting us know.

NOTES & QUERIES:
- How come this has just been advertized and interviews are scheduled?
- There are no interviews scheduled yet; it's a copy-paste mistake, which I corrected.
- Someone posted (and deleted) a question about the site not working. It hates Safari but works fine in Firefox
- For those going to campus: I once considered a job there and could not take it because of my personal situation. Lubbock is a tough sell. However, it is a growing department, with extraordinary people.
- i had a campus interview and have been informed that I didn't get the job. Presumably someone else got an offer and accepted.

Preliminary interview (please specify: Skype, MLA, phone): Skype [posted 1/26]
Rejection post-MLA:
Campus visit: [see NOTES]
Offer made:
NOTES & QUERIES:
- Reposting yesterday's comment (don't know why it got deleted...): does anybody find it strange that this opening is not advertised on the MLA JIL??
- It was posted, it probably just expired.
- Really? Have you seen it? I've been checking every week for 2 months and never saw it.
- That's why it's important to check all of the job lists. Plus, HR does make mistakes. I know of more than one search where the deadline had to be moved because HR never sent out the job ad. In one case, it had only been posted on the university's website, and no one realized it until the committee tried to start reviewing applications.
- Any news? It's been about a month now...
- Any news after skype interview? no news after skype interview yet; anybody else ? how long should we wait ?
- Campus interviews?
- Not that I know of. I think the snow storm has something to do with it.
- Just an FYI: I went through interviews (Skype + on-campus) with them last year for another position (didn't get it), and the whole process took forever -- almost the entire spring semester -- they take their time. Don't lose hope. (2/13)
- Campus visit yet?
- Heard secondhand that campus visits have taken place. Don't know when or how many. Can anyone corroborate?

NOTES & QUERIES:
Does anyone have the answer to this question: if one sends the letters of recommendation via interfolio to the email address (as stipulated in the application instructions), then how does one submit the rest the application through the UCO HR site? Everytime I click "next" to finish the submission it tells me that my application is incomplete (and therefore will not be considered) due to the missing letters--but of course those have gone to the email address.
- Yes! I encountered the same problem and emailed the HR Department. This was their reply: "To complete this application process, simply upload a Word document in place of the letters of recommendation, that states what avenue you will be using to submit the letters of recommendation (either have your references or Interfolio, email jobs@uco.edu with the letters) and that the letters will be uploaded by Human Resources upon arrival. Once those letters are received, our office will replace the Word documents with the letters of recommendation."
- Thanks for the tip!

Offer made:
NOTES & QUERIES:
- so when they say Francophone, do they mean "outside of France"? I'm asking because that definition seems rather variable...
- Are they converting the lecturer's position into TT, or adding to their team?
- Based on the rejection e-mail, they have already identified "a" candidate who matches their criteria. Sure makes it sound like it was not a real search! What a waste of time!
- Yes, and the lecturer there (phd 2010) totally fits the search profile, having lived in France and another area of the francophone world... That's weird, however, if they don't even do interviews... I wonder how it is justified to HR.
- whether fake or not I cannot tell, but I know a person who has an interview with them at the MLA (posted 11/24)

NOTES & QUERIES:
- AGAIN? 4th time in a row? What gives? Did the person they hired jump ship? Must be an awful place to work.
- The guy they hired in 2013 is still there and serving as search committee chair. It might be about time for their senior faculty member to retire.
- So who is the Search Chair? MLA says Dr. Clint Bruce but Interfolio says Dr. Sylvie Charron.
- For anyone interested in this position, you should research the University of Maine system--and its current state of affairs. Check out a recent article in the Wall Street Journal (sorry, no link; from January 2015). The entire system is on the verge of bankruptcy. ***Many professors who are retiring are *not* being replaced by TT positions**. This is system-wide. And I do not need to be the first one to tell you that languages (particularly French) will be one of the first programs to get the 'ax'. Ask serious questions during any campus interview, and consider all of your options. It's a mess. Don't put all of your marbles in this basket.

NOTES & QUERIES:
- Any news? Are they doing MLA interviews?
- What's going on with this position? It expires from the JIL in February, yet there is a "possibility" to interview at the MLA? Well, the MLA is just about upon us; something weird here. Stop playing games, please. Either choose your candidates in time for the MLA, with sufficient and appropriate notice, or make a selection in February/spring. My assumption is that they have a "pre-determined" applicant pool...or applicant.
- It's not a great way to run a search. The chair's wife is listed as a visitor on the department website, but doesn't seem to currently be teaching any classes. Perhaps that's the answer...
- Hmmm...............
- Received auto-generated message from Interfolio that "while my credentials are impressive...blah...blah...blah...my qualifications do not meet the current needs of the department, etc., etc." My qualifications and background? What more do they want? A sex change? A disability? Bi-racial + blind in one eye and only one kidney? Would that force a non-rigged search? My credentials (and others', I'm sure) seemed to align pretty damn well with the criteria set forth. Complete BS. This is a total "inside" job. And all this over a ONE year position? Give me a break. They can have it. BUT, I can't wait to see who ultimately steps in and fills this job; the chair's wife, maybe? Just incredible...Moving on...
- Someone I know had an interview with them at the MLA. Nothing since.

Silly to ask, I know, but I'm staring at my empty email imagining other people must have gotten interviews, given GT's tight schedule.

- That's odd. I applied. I haven't not been contacted for an interview but I haven't received a rejection email either.

Word on the Street[]
- The JobList is out. It is a rather dire year. +2 Let's hope it gets better with age. -doesn't seem like it.
- Well, someone is all doom and gloom.
- Well, with this market, if you're not doom and gloom you're either in denial, or you know more than we do. So, what's your secret?
- Well, someone is all doom and gloom.
- Does anyone know at what time on Friday the MLA typically update the job list?
- Should be updated by noon Eastern time.
- Thank you
- Should be updated by noon Eastern time.
- Let us remember the good times with this 2012 tumblr of whimsical job postings that aren't real but really could have been. http://mlajobs.tumblr.com/
- Thanks so much for reminding me of this gem. I had forgotten about it. If I recall correctly, there are actually a couple of "real" jobs sandwiched in with the fake ones. It's sad state of affairs when we can no longer tell them apart.
- No mention of Hope college? I know it's probably not for everyone as it's a religious college, but if you are so inclined: http://www.hope.edu/academic/language/french/ (deadline: November 1). Sorry it's last-minute, don't have time to go through the editing process as I'm trying to finish my apps
- Added above (10/30)
- General question to all who read this wiki: does anyone else feel the pointlessness of applying to departments that already have VAPs? It seems like something should be done to minimize these 'fake' searches. It feels like a complete waste of time to apply to these jobs.
- It is not pointless. Sometimes the VAP is not even given a campus visit (happened to people I know). Sometimes the department likes the VAP but the VAP wants out (because of their partner, geography, who knows). Sometimes VAP and department love each other but -- surprise! -- the VAP gets a job somewhere more desirable. You never know. Apply.
- The searches are almost never "fake." Among the tenure-track searches I have witnessed that had an internal candidate (VAP/lecturer/postdoc), the majority did not end with the internal candidate being hired.
- I'm one of those VAPs who was in a department where I didn't get hired for a TT position advertised that might, from the outside, have looked like it "fit me like a glove". I didn't even get an interview. It had a couple of effects on me: 1) I feel myself rooting for the internal candidate a lot more easily; after all, that person has already invested a lot of energy/time in the department, and even uprooted themselves and/or family to move to this place. 2) it made me realize that there's a big difference between a VAP and a TT person. VAPs are hired because there's a specific need: specific courses, already assigned to a departing prof, need to be filled, usually on short notice. For a TT prof, perhaps the department decides to move in a different direction; they had too many established profs leave so they want to hire an 'advanced TT' person; they think a person with a different specialization than the current VAP will attract more students; they want to make sure that the person they hire will get tenure and think a different candidate is more likely to have enough publications... etc. And yes, the VAP might be tired of being at that university... In hindsight, I'm glad I didn't stay forever, but that took a while to realize. I have to say though, there are a few instances on this wiki where I didn't bother applying since the requirements were so specific the ad seemed to be written specifically for an internal candidate (and my specs were slightly different). But if the description fits you, and you think you'd be a good candidate, go for it. Perhaps just don't be bitter if the VAP does end up getting the contract...
- Does anyone know to what extent nationality affects universities' choices? Many application forms have a question about eligibility to work in the US, i.e. if the candidate would need a visa. Do you have a sense of how that factors in the decision process, if at all?
- From what I understand, it is more likely to affect your chances for short-term positions, since sponsoring a visa is a cost and a risk that schools might not be willing to make for a one-year hire. Not only that, but since many of those hires happen late in the year, even a small delay in the visa application process can prevent the new hire from starting on time. For a TT hire, it's much less likely to be an issue. -- Makes sense, thank you!
- The search for Williams College is back on (except now it's only for 1 year). http://www.mla.org/jil_listing?id=22501
- I have questions about timelines, can anyone provide some insight? Generally how long does it take for departments to notify candidates of campus interviews after the initial screening (via MLA or SKYPE/PHONE)? How long does it take for departments to notify candidates of job offers after campus interviews?
- This might not be a very helpful answer, but it varies a lot. Some will get in touch within a day of finishing interviews. Others will take 2-3 weeks. Some that happen before or during winter break have to wait until the start of the next semester when the whole search committee (sometimes not all members are present at the first interview) can meet to make a decision. Some places continue narrowing down finalists after first-round interviews by asking for more materials or calling references. Some places think they'll have an answer in a week, but then there's an administrative delay of some kind or another. Notification after campus interviews can be just as fast or slow. You can always ask the committee during your interview what their anticipated timeline is, but they don't always know for sure.
- As the previous poster said, notification time varies wildly. Generally speaking, however, positive notifications arrive much more quickly than negative ones. For example, a search committee might not contact MLA interviewees who were not invited to campus until after an offer has been accepted by a finalist who came to campus -- as late as March or April, potentially -- because they are keeping open the possibility of inviting one of those people if things don't work out with the initial shortlist. Likewise, the first person to receive an offer after a campus visit will hear sooner than the others. The rejections often don't go out until the search is complete, paperwork signed, etc. This is why so many candidates end up getting unofficially "rejected" by the wiki long before they hear from the search committee. (And sometimes, in the worst cases, the committee never gets in touch at all.) However, as the previous poster intimated, the whole process is typically very slow, so not hearing from a committee doesn't always equal bad news. There's really no way to know, unfortunately, even if the committee has given you a sense of their timeline. I recommend meditating a lot, taking long walks, and staying off the wiki.
- With many of the positions posted this year being on the East Coast and in the Midwest, I find it extremely rude that search committees notify candidates as late as mid-to-late December about Vancouver interviews. Vancouver is not exactly easy to fly into, and it is expensive. This brings up the lingering issue that the MLA conference/interviews should be revisited. And, who paid off the MLA to schedule Vancouver, anyway? Yes, someone bid that under the table--I promise you. In any case, why even bother to have interviews at this conference? By the time expenses are paid for faculty hotel rooms, air travel, etc., etc., just fly in your top three candidates to your own campus and interview them there. Save money. And hassle. And energy. Oh, this profession. And we wonder why things are the way...they are. We can write papers and articles; but business managers were are...not. The first mistake is tasking a group of academics with identifying new hires/faculty. Business is business. Do what's best for the students. It is not a pissing match. As a member of the search committee, you likely already have tenure. So calm down, and blow your own horn later. Get the job done; quickly and efficiently. You're not electing the next President of the United States.
- Happy New Year everyone!
- Is it normal to not get rejection letters, even if you're clearly out of the running? I applied for `20 jobs and only received 3 rejections. It seems cruel to not put candidates out of their misery!
- Very normal, unfortunately! There are HR reasons for this. It's dumb, but should be expected.
- It is indeed very normal and that is why the Wiki was created! :)
- Whether it is "normal" or not to receive a rejection letter is beside the point. It is in very poor taste, and gives our profession a bad name. Who do these people (i.e., search committees) think they are? They are too busy? Give me a break; they're not running the world. Actually, and technically, HR departments (either directly or through these committees) are bound by employment laws to respond to each applicant in some form of writing. Laws vary from state to state, but they are required to respond. Gleaning notifications from a wiki is not sufficient. I mean, it appears as if committees are becoming so lazy that they refuse to even send out the ever-so-overused rejection form letter/mass mailing. I hope, for all of my rising and aspiring colleages, that your PhD programs are preparing you for alternative career tracks. I'm hearing from more and more junior colleagues (which I can certainly understand) that playing this game is becoming old. And fast. And without us, where will the future of humanities be? Not to mention, more specifically, language studies. Hmmm...On a brighter note, be proactive and fight hard for other jobs. Think about how you can use your skills in a different setting.
- HEAR, HEAR. Not to receive so much as an email rejection after a campus visit is beyond inexcusable. Personally, I've decided to leave academia. Not because of lack of success on my part but simply because it has become clear to me that the "profession" isn't about education. It's about ego and treating job applicants and junior colleagues with disdain and abuse. Universities and job committees focus on things that just aren't important in life or in education. Good riddance. I hope that more junior colleagues face these truths and decide to take the road less traveled.
- Note to search committees: Do refrain from writing to job candidates after interviews about how great they are only to reject them a few weeks later. It sends mixed messages and it reflects poorly on you, your search committee members, and your school. You obviously disagree with other members and were railroaded by someone with more "authority".
- Well put; HEAR, HEAR! And on that note, let me just remind everyone that these positions are first and foremost about the STUDENTS. Our first responsibility in this profession is to serve our students and "profess" our knowledge in a way that creates and fosters productive citizens. Even at the most prestigious of "research" institutions, students are paying for you/us to teach them; not for you to blow your own horn all day long. Sorry to tell you, but at the end of the day, what really matters is how we change lives. Not that book or article. Search committees: IT IS NOT ONLY ABOUT YOU, YOUR RESEARCH, AND YOUR FEARS THAT SOMEONE WILL OUTSHINE YOU. Get over yourselves, dear blessed search committees. Who will be the best fit for your students? This question is rarely even asked behind closed doors. Pathetic. I agree with the previous poster, I am just about over it...
- I'm sorry to hear some of you have had awful interview experiences. I've encountered a handful of pompous or aggressive interviewers, but the vast majority have been respectful, and most of those conversations were pleasant even if I wasn't invited to campus. I never once had an interview in which the committee didn't care about teaching or how I would fit with their students, and I know for a fact that one job I didn't get precisely because my teaching demo was not well matched to their students (my bad; but I learned a lot from that experience). Do egos, self-interest, department/university politics and arbitrary preferences sometimes get in the way of picking the best candidate? Sure. Are we justified in getting angry when searches are conducted unprofessionally or without respect for candidates? Of course. But as comforting as it might be, I don't think you're doing yourself any favors by assuming every job you didn't get was because you're "better than them" and they're jealous of you or because you "care too much" about teaching. Saying that kind of thing makes you look like the intolerable ego. In fact, that might be the real reason you're not getting offers despite "professing your knowledge" so well.
- Poster above me, I understand how the "don't blow your horn" poster can sound annoying and egomaniac, but I don't think blaming his/her situation (about which we know nothing) on the personality s/he shows on the wiki accurately reflects the job situation in our field. There are egomaniacs who have jobs and perfectly nice (and competent and good at teaching and research) people who are unemployed. I believe s/he is just letting off some steam, which is understandable considering the state of the job market in the humanities. Although I would not express my thoughts in the same way as Mr. or Ms. "don't blow your horn", the problem with our field is that there is no conversation about the state of the market, no move to reduce the number of PhDs, nothing. In fact, senior, established scholars actively deny there is a problem, even though they are on the first line, as they know too well that they don't place all of their students in TT jobs. So yes, people are going to get angry at the lack of transparency in hiring. Yes, when one sees that school X hires an ABD with no publication (but hey, s/he is sexy - more often an "he"), they're going to wonder what's going on. Yes, they're going to wonder about inside hires, spousal hires, etc. I'd rather we be angry than numb. I'd rather we be angry than we just wait to be crushed by the system. Telling someone "you're unemployed because you're a d***" is the same as the famous "there are always jobs for good people" we've all heard. It's just not true. One can be any combination of un/employed and "(not) a d***", and there are simply not enough jobs for good people. I wish we as a field could have a conversation about this, but as long as the "there are jobs for good people" mythology is in place, I don't see that happening. I think it's sad as it will continue to damage young scholars...
- Yes, I know the market sucks, and I agree that not getting an academic job doesn't mean there's something wrong with you. I perfectly understand venting about the hiring situation as it stands. But that poster did not complain that s/he was misled into a bad market or that a particular job went to someone far less qualified or that tenure-track positions are dwindling in favor of adjunct and 1-year positions, etc. Rather, the poster suggests that search committees "fear s/he will outshine them" and don't care about teaching. This, in my experience, does not reflect reality. My point is that projecting an attitude that says "I'm better than you and too good for this department" in interviews is much more likely to tank your chances than actually being an outstanding teacher and scholar.
- Hi, everyone. This is "blow your own horn." I understand your thoughts, and perhaps I was venting a bit; but I stand firm by my opinion that our profession is remiss with egomaniacs (of which I am *not* one). In my experience (and I have vast experience outside of academia as well), this behavior is much more pronounced in our profession. Yes: job hunting is terrible, regardless of your field. But languages, particularly French (for some odd reason), seems to be noticeably more filled with negativity. And do not get me wrong, I have received offer(s), and have been on recent interviews. And I do have an excellent position in a city that I love. But we always, if only out of mere curiosity, explore other opportunities when the job market is open; don't lie. What I have been able to do over these years is gain valuable insight, from the inside, into this merky situation. I agree with the poster above that there are TOO (TOOOOOOOO) many PhDs on the market. It's almost as if our degree is becoming, how sould I say, "mass" produced. The first step is to reduce the number of candidates. Indeed, this is the very first step toward making the market better for our future colleagues. So what does this mean? This means that TT faculty will have to STEP UP, teach basic language courses, and stop relying so heavily on TAs. And...drum roll...ACTUALLY TEACH. The market must become less saturated with candidates if we expect it to level out. And to that poster that thought I projected a "I'm better than you" attitude during an interview: you are completely wrong. I am very humble, sweet, and extremely outgoing. For me, for example, it was (once) a question of gender, coupled with other discriminatory factors, that kept me from getting [a] job with a [certain] institution. Completely illegal. And this is very prevalent, unfortunately. And I can tell you, for those of you who appear to be somewhat "in the dark," that people in this profession (in general) will smile to your face, praise your "accomplishments," and then will stab you in your back as soon as you leave the room. And this leaves me to my last and final point. Aside from reducing the number of candidates, search committees should be comprised of faculty and administrators from another college or university, thereby permitting an unbiased, less subjective review of a candidate's profile and potential "fit" in a given position. This would eliminate inappropriate and unprofessional discourse during the review. We do this for 'major' searches, so why not for junior colleagues? Allowing faculty members to tarnish a search with their own petty agendas (i.e., Will I get along with him/her? Will s/he assume some of my committee responsibilities? Or...I like her, but we really need a male on staff. Or...She seems nice, but only two publications? Or...great scholar, but look at these student evaluations; they're horrible!) is just not efficient or productive. This is why many Deans have to eventually step in and override a committee's hiring decision. Again, sorry to say, but the whole process is a mess and senior faculty are doing NOTHING about it--except protecting their own jobs. It really is pathetic. And I will end with the same point I ended with in my previous post: explore other avenues. There is a world of opportunity out there. DO NOT assume you will ever get tenure in this field. It's tough out there, but sometimes is even "tougher" in here...if you can even get in the door. Keep your options open, and do not let this "process" get you down.
- What jobs outside of academia? No, I wasn't prepared for it...
- Some of the things you list as part of the "petty agenda" seem like very legit concerns: lack of productivity or bad teaching should be problematic for a department. And giving admins more weight than they already have seems like a bad, no, terrible idea. Academia is in its current state largely due to inept administrators. Also, your rant above (in the ConnColl entry) about gender, race, and disability seems to imply that minorities have less of a hard time on the job market. But if you take a look at who's been hired in the past five years or so, you'll see that for the most part, it's been white, cisgendered, able-bodied, conventionally attractive men and women. Sadly, that's the kind of bias there is in hiring. With that being said, the MLA convention is now upon us, so good luck to those of you who are going!
- What I was implying, o' wise one, is that many of these searches are carried out, and completed, based on the 'wishes' and 'desires' of a small group of faculty members. If recent hires have all been "attractive" as you suggest, then how can we be sure that perhaps "less attractive" candidates were equally considered? How can we be sure that any level of fairness is *ever* present? This, again, is just one of several major flaws in this ridiculous process. Faculty complain all day long about administrators (blah blah blah), but do you really think allowing US (the "academics") to "run" the show at the top would result in anything much better? What about working together? Now there's an idea. Can you honestly say that you and your colleagues get along so very well that, together, without oversight, you could balance the budget, gain needed funds from donors, and manage quirky faculty across several schools and disciplines? Right. But to return to the concern at hand, and as I suggested earlier, these searches should be carried out under VERY close scrutiny, and should be subject to strict reporting (and by this, I do not mean a "report" written by the Chair of the "Search Committee.") Search committees (quite often) are given way too much authority when it comes to identifying--and hiring--new faculty. It needs to change. AND, YES: THE VERY BEST OF LUCK TO ALL OF YOU HERE AT THE MLA.
- Good luck to all of you at MLA and in SKYPE interviews and on campus. I am an old (okay maybe not that that old) tenured person, an administrator, and someone who has hired many people and sat on various searches. In response to all that has been said, I wanted to add that the market is very tight. No doubt about it. A decent tenure-track position can draw 100 or more applicants. There is one job, and 100 or more qualified people to screen. In the private sector, the numbers are often much more skewed (many more applicants... hundreds) so it's still not as bad as it could be. Hiring committees are composed of people who have lived a while and who are very very careful when hiring, and for good reason. We have to fight very hard to get tenure lines. If the candidate we choose doesn't get tenure, in this day and age realistically we often lose that line permanently. So we have to assess very carefully (and it's not easy) how likely the people we interview are to be able to meet the tenure standards at our institution (and these standards vary widely). Research productivity at a research-centered institution matters very much. So does the ability of the person's project to find a press (and in many cases it must be a university press). Finding a press is harder than finding an academic job, let's leave it at that, and the selection process has less to do with the quality of the project than its market appeal. Tenure at a research-focused institution also depends upon numbers of expert outside reviewers reading all of your research at tenure time and affirming that it is significant and impactful. In colleges where teaching counts, we have to look very hard at each candidate's teaching, their ability to teach the things we need, and the "fit" of any particular candidate for our students--and students vary from institution to institution. And we do care about personality, because one bad hire can seriously impact the entire atmosphere of a department (I could tell you horror stories). Hiring choices are rarely pre-determined, and in my experience committees are fair and they work together and listen to one another. Decisions in my experience have typically been made by strong concensus. It's hard for applicants to see that, because they can't see all of the variables in play or the inner workings. So good luck! Take a deep breath. Be yourself, Be passionate and convincing about your work. Talk about it clearly and in detail and have some idea where you are going with it. Be positive (if I detected some of the negativity on this wiki in an interview, it would negatively impact my read of the candidate). Be confident about your work, but also humble (you still have alot to learn). KNOW about the institutions where you are applying. Have thought hard about how you would fit. Be open to positions other than tenure-track at Tier I. I know people in really good jobs at places you have never heard of! Take all interviews seriously and give them equal weight. If you spend your energy on your "dream" job and try to wing the rest, you might cost yourself the job that was the best fit for you. Prepare rigorously for job talks and teaching demonstrations and target them to the individual institution. And above all GOOD LUCK again. People do get jobs, and they do get tenure, and they do get their happily ever after (until they are talked into being an administrator anyway). <-- this person rocks!
- Thank you for taking the time to provide some very helpful info.
- Has anyone applied in Arkansas (probably yes actually, my question being more, has anyone applied and heard perhaps?) http://hr.uark.edu/jobdetails.asp?ListingID=7177
- Yes, I have. Not heard from them yet.
- I'm not holding my breath. Their VAP seems like an excellent fit, for what it's worth...
- Someone added the Arkansas job to the list, and it says that skype interviews have been scheduled.
- Out of curiosity, how many people have NOT heard back from any of the positions that they applied for?
- Also, how many have NOT had any interview requests?
- (Applied to three schools, heard back from zero)
- Question: When one leaves academia, where does one go? Total or semi career change? Any success stories to share? After 10+ years of teaching at the university level (grad school + adjunct + VAP) I wonder how I might adjust to another field...or not.
- "Where one does go?": I have no answer. Most people who don't get jobs or don't get tenure seem to fade away. It's heartbreaking. I don't have much to offer you except empathy. It's not you; it's the system, it really is. I'm sure that when prospective grad students visit your PhD granting institution (and mine, and all the others) in the next few weeks, they'll be told that "there are always good jobs for good people" and "most of our graduates are placed". Meanwhile, *most* of said graduates will be stuck adjuncting or in dead end jobs after devoting ten of their best years to a career that never materialized. Take care, and again: it's not you.
- I think the OP wanted practical advice. People don't disappear when they "fade" from academia, they just show up on other kinds of radar. As of yet I have no success stories of my own but know of people who made the transition and now have steady jobs. I have added a non-academic job search to my academic one. Tell your committee and department of your plans to do so if you feel they would support you. Talking to career councelors was somewhat less informative, but it helped me describe transferable skills. Look at administrative jobs on the academic job boards. Above all, try to have an honest self-assessment of your skills, which is incredibly hard. Good luck to us all!
- My anecdotal input: I'm obviously not giving up on academia yet (which is why I'm using this wiki during the job search!), but I've been working this year out of academia. Peripheral education (tutoring, test-prep) is always an option, as is teaching K-12 (you can teach at a private school or charter school with a PhD and no state credentials). Translation work isn't as esoteric as it might seem, and there is a lot of it out there; did you know that all international patents have to be in 3 languages, and the 3rd is usually French? Translation agencies can range from awful to totally nice, and it is possible to freelance if that fits your personality/time better. I haven't yet tried to make these things work full-time, but they give me hope that academia isn't the only place where my skills can be useful!
- +1 to this post above. I found work as a corporate translator with very little actual translation experience, except for a couple of classes and some small projects I worked on with a prof from another department while in grad school. The pay is decent (about what you'd get as a full-time instructor) and the work is surprisingly fun.
- I didn't answer this before because I thought some good responses would come up. I'm surprised at how little has. First, if you just google "alt-ac" or "post-ac" you will find tons of blogs and websites devoted to this very issue. The short answer is people go almost anywhere. Research is a skill that is useful in many contexts, as is teaching -- you just may need to unpack what that means so that a prospective employer can understand that you didn't simply spend the last 10 years navel gazing. You are still alive and still human, which means you can learn and adapt and find a career where you might be truly respected and even fulfilled. Go find it!
- + 1 to this post above as well. VersatilePhD is an awesome resource when you are trying to find your way out of academia. Some of the blogs are fun reads (I like PAINYC for instance).
- Hi Colleagues! I hope everyone is in good spirits these days. I was wondering if we could share some data regarding those of you who have received JOB OFFERS. *Specifically*, would you share whether you are a 1) non-native speaker; 2) native speaker; or 3) heritage speaker. You could simply just indicate/respond "1" "2" or "3". There seems to be some strange things going on in French in this regard, and I hope to see lots of diverse responses here. Please answer honestly and openly. Thanks to you all! Posted 3/23/15
- What do you mean: "There seems to be some strange things going on in French in this regard" ?
- I, too, am eager to know what that means!

- What do you mean: "There seems to be some strange things going on in French in this regard" ?
- Hi fellow Frenchies! I just wanted to share an interesting fact I learned in a rejection letter I received this week. The letter rambled on a bit, as they all do, but then went on to state that "We received applications from more than 90 PhDs for our open position." WHAT this means, clearly, is what we already knew: the market, particularly in French, is OVER-SATURATED. So, for those doctoral program advisors and faculty who are reading this (perhaps out of curiosity; you know you do, admit it), STOP admitting so many freakin' PhD students into your programs. Think about the profession, and not about whether or not you want to teach basic language courses (we are more than slaves for you). Think about the future of your students who graduate...with no real potential or chance of getting a "job." The market will never catch up at this rate. And, yes: some people clearly do get jobs. And, yes: some of us may one day walk on the moon. And, yes: this is a RANT. Deal with it! Happy job hunting! (Right...)
- I agree with a lot of what you're saying here. The market is oversaturated, and graduate programs have a responsibility to prepare their students to face that competition and to do their part not to exacerbate the saturated market. But for perspective: 90 applicants per posting is a much more favorable applicant-to-job ratio than for most non-academic jobs. One recent survey, which included job postings ranging from crappy minimum wage jobs to highly desirable degree-requiring white-collar jobs, found a national average of 250 applicants per posting [[1]]. That's right, getting a stockroom job at your local Wal-Mart is probably a longer shot (statistically) than getting the most coveted TT job in French. There's stiff competition for almost any job out there. Having a Ph.D. doesn't shield us from that, even if it is understandably a lot more frustrating to face that competition after spending years training for the job and passing the tests that are supposed to tell us we're professor material (admitted to grad school, qualifying exams, defense). Keep in mind too that if the average applicant in that pool of 90 is applying to 30 jobs, the ratio would be more like 3:1 spread over all the jobs. The problem for most of us is that that doesn't mean everyone has an equal 1/3 chance at a job; usually the same small group of people get a lot of interviews in a given year and have a high chance of getting an offer, while those with less experience, publications, interview savvy, etc. or whose subfield has few-to-no openings that year are playing the lottery. For those still applying to the late non-TT postings (which have smaller applicant pools, if that helps), I hope you get one that will set you up for TT success next year, if that's still what you want. I can attest that that extra experience makes a big difference, if you can get it (big if, I know). Most people I know on the tenure-track in languages who have gotten their Ph.D.s since 2008 did not get them their first (or even second) year on the market. That's just how it works now.
- Thanks to the above poster for this helpful information. While the cited statistics regarding "non-academic" jobs is interesting, I just feel like, frankly, there are 'wider' opportunities for one to cast one's net in the so-called "non-academic" world. I see colleagues up-rooting their families and moving to the middle-of-nowhere for a *one-year, visiting* position. And even those jobs are becoming more and more difficult to grab. This is what is has come to, unfortunately. And while getting that Wal-Mart job may be, statistically, more difficult to land, the fact is there are more of them out there; and there are more openings at 'Wal-Mart,' so to speak, than there are teaching jobs for French PhDs. And can we talk for a moment about Skype and phone interviews? What in the worldddd did we everrrr do before Skype? While technology is extremely useful, as we would all likely agree, it can also be abused. People shine in person. Just a fact. If someone is perfect for a job on paper, do not write them off because they do not "perform" over Skype, or on the telephone. This method of interviewing just reeks of unethical profiling. It is an extremely artificial way to "screen" someone, and frankly is an invasion of personal space. Candidates should have an opportunity to demonstrate their talent, language skills, and pedagogy *in person*. But, alas, we've moved on from this most basic of ideas as well. People will comment that Skype allows committees to reach more candidates...blah, blah, blah. And as I'm writing this, I am beginning to see, more clearly, that this whole thing is just, well, disgusting. I cherish my PhD; but I am slowing backing out of this...
- Responding to "Keep in mind too that if the average applicant in that pool of 90 is applying to 30 jobs, the ratio would be more like 3:1 spread over all the jobs." No, your ratio is not 3:1, as each job is an independent yes/no experiment. So not only do we not all have an equal chance at a job, the chance is not 1/3 to begin with. I would also challenge the assumption that people with "less experience and publications" have worse odds at getting a job, as we have seen ABDs with no publications being hired over supposedly more seasoned candidates times and times in the past. As for non-TT jobs having smaller applicant pools, that's true for some of them, but the desirable ones with more open specialization often get 150+ applicants. Truth is the market is a crap shoot. You can do everything "right" and still not get a job. In fact, nowadays, professionalization has gone so far that most people do everything "right" - yet most still don't get a job.
- I did not say your chance was 1/3 for each job. Rather, if 90 people are applying for 30 jobs (oversimplified model, I know), roughly 30 (maybe 27 if 3 searches fail, etc.) will get offers because no one can accept multiple offers. And ABDs without publications getting TT jobs is exceptionally rare. I know there are a lot of unpredictable factors in hiring, and that plenty of good people don't get jobs, and that some departments have different priorities than others. But none of them make a hire by drawing a name out of a hat. There are factors (on your CV, in your interviews) that can improve or worsen your chances, even if nothing is guaranteed.
